Judges Who Have Earned our Vote ARLO KALLEMEYN Next Tuesday March 18 is the day we are able to vote for people who will represent us. There w i l l be ca nd idates for G o v e r n o r, S t a t e R e p, State Senator and others. A f ter you get done voting for your favorite candidates, you will see a list of judges. Qualified judges often have a bigger impact on our daily lives t hat a ny ot her elected of f icia ls. T hey ma ke decisions regarding traffic violations, misdemeanors and felonies – the serious crimes. Judges decide on probation, length of prison time and bond levels. I encou rage you to vote for 2 judge ca nd idates w ho have made a big difference in the lives of Cook Count y residents. The first is Al Swanson. Judge Swanson decides cases in foreclosure court. These are people who are losing their homes due to many different reasons. However, t hey a ll have one t h i ng i n com mon. They are going through a f i na ncia l cr i si s t hat will impact their family for many years to come. Few t h i ngs i n l i fe a re a s t rau mat ic a s losi ng you r home. I v isited w it h Judge Sw a n son for a few moments last week and asked him how he ma kes decisions i n these difficult cases. He repl ied, “My fa it h a nd belief in the Golden Rule guides my decisions. I’m no Solomon, but I treat ever yone the way that I
would want to be treated in a similar situation. I strive for empathy, caring a nd e sp e c i a l l y t a k i ng the time to listen to the personal stories of those who are in my courtroom. When people go through a foreclosure they have hit a brick wall of economic ha rdship. I wa nt to be a judge w ho s e e s t he hu ma n element i n t he cases before me.” A l is highly recommended by many organizations and I encourage you to vote for Judge Al Swanson - Punch #142. T he second judge candidate is William ‘Bill’ Raines. Bill Raines has many years of courtroom e x p e r ie nc e a s b ot h a prosecutor and defense attorney. While he was a police officer, Bill studied law - and earned his law degree after being shot in the line of duty. Bill says, “I am especially sensitive to how the court system impacts the lives of the p e ople it s er v e s . T he decisions made i n t he courtroom have an impact that can last for years. I will serve with caring and commitment to those who appear before my bench.” I encourage you to vote for Bill Raines – Punch #154. Tha n ks for reading my adv ice, a nd plea se remember – v ot i ng i s ou r pr iv i le ge a nd ou r right. Let’s not waste this opportunity. Walker Stalker Con brings major celebrities from zombie, horror and sci-fi films and TV shows to Chicago this March Walker Stalker Con, a zombie, horror, and sci-fi themed fan-centric convention, w ill be held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center this March 14-16, 2014. Fan access to celebrity guests will be the primary focus of this event. In Atlanta, GA on November 1-3, 2013, Walker Stalker Con made its debut where it assembled 17 main cast members from “The Walking Dead”, more than any other convention ever before, along with 35 other actors from zombie and horror films. In attendance were Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus and “The Walking Dead” Executive Producer, Greg Nicotero, among many others. With cast members from “The Walking Dead” assembled at the upcoming Chicago convention, along with stars from other zombie and horror films, Walker Stalker Con continues to position itself to be particularly unique. Watch out for zombies invading Chicago on St. Patrick’s Day weekend! Walker Stalker Con all began when The Walker Stalkers Podcast with James and Eric (www.thewalkerstalkers.com) reached #2 on iTunes for all Entertainment podcasts. The podcast continues to be popular for connecting the fans to the celebrities and actors of the TV Show “The Walking Dead”! James and Eric wanted to take this same idea of connecting fans to the celebrities and created Walker Stalker Con. “We hope to continue this same kind of access and

involvement as we did with our successful convention in Atlanta,” say James Frazier and Eric Nordhoff, hosts of the podcast. “We want fans of TV shows, films and comics in this genre to have a chance to have real interaction with their favorite celebrities – not just a 10 second hand shake and photo opp.”

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I recently put an offer on a house and gave a $1,000 deposit. I signed all the contracts. I never received a signed copy from the owner because he was away on business. His agent overnighted him the contracts and the owner of the house is now saying he does not want to sell. Do I have a right to that house? The agent did refund my money, but I feel the owner signed the contracts and the house should be mine. Answer: Entire libraries are devoted to the question of what is or is not a contract. In general terms, you need an offer (a bid to purchase), acceptance (an owner who says “great” and signs the offer) and consideration (such as a deposit). A signed document is awfully good evidence that something was accepted, but based on your note you don’t have any proof that the seller actually signed the offer. M o r e o v e r, y o u d i d n o t s i g n a “contract.” You did sign an “offer.” To have a contract you would need the seller’s
signature and acceptance of all terms. Sellers are not required to accept offers, even full-price offers. That t he ow ner was “away” does not mea n a sig ned agreement cou ld not be sent overnight or electronically tra nsmitted. Your deposit has been promptly returned -- that’s good news and a credit to the broker. The question to ask is this: If you really want the property would it make sense to submit another offer? Maybe the first Chicago;Van Drunen Heating Co;A07377;5x8-4c offer can be modified to gain acceptance from the owner. Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES and probably never will again. It really was a job pulling those heavy rafts against the stormy orders to abandon ship. I walked over to a sailor who was sitting behind his gun waiting to pull his finger on the trigger at the first sight of the enemy sub. He was a pretty good friend of mine. I had often talked with him before on other days during the day when he would clean his gun. He was a veteran sailor who had made many trips across the ocean already before this. I s a y s t o him , “d o you think she will sink if we don’t get any more explosions?” He said “I don’t know, but we are sure to get more, so don’t stand stiff legged because if you do and a torpedo hits, it will break your legs when it hits.” S o I w a s s t a n din g around with my legs bent so…to be continued. They were supposed to be fastened by rope to the ship but somehow they got cut loose and began drifting away from the ship very fast in the current of the water, and we of course became very alarmed. We managed to get hold of the rope. It was all covered with oil slick but we all got hold of it, holding with strength we h a d n ever h a d b e fore

President honors volunteers during Red Cross Month
People worldwide rely on humanitarian aid from the American Red Cross during times of great need. For 133 years, the American Red Cross has been a place where people mobilize to help their neighbors during emergencies and disasters. And each spring since 1942, starting with Franklin Roosevelt, the U.S. President acknowledges that role and encourages volunteerism and blood donation by proclaiming March as Red Cross Month. “Wherever there’s a need, we’ll be there,” said Sharyn Whitman, CEO for the American Red Cross Indiana-Ohio. “That’s because our volunteers – like our neighbors -- are across the street, across the country and around the world.” More than 3.5 million people volunteered to give blood last year, and helped provide blood products for patients in about 3,000 U.S. hospitals and transfusion centers. In addition, more t han 500,000 people a year volunteer nat ionw ide t hrough t he A merica n Red Cross. Those volunteers make a difference through Red Cross services associated with blood donation, disaster relief, health and safety training, support to military members and families, and international aid. “While the world changes around us, our mission never does,” said Whitman. “We’re all about helping others during times of great need – and we can do that because of the generosity of countless volunteers and donors—including people who roll up their sleeve and give blood.” The Red Cross delivers humanitarian and community services through a network of community Chapters, and collects blood through 36 Blood Regions. In the last year, these locally-supported Chapters responded to nearly 70,000 Apts. For Rent: Riverdale, Harvey 1 & 2 bdrm apts. Clean, carpeted, A/C. Heat included. body, red blood cells absorb carbon monoxide quicker than they pick up oxygen. When high levels of carbon monoxide are present, the body begins to replace oxygen with carbon monoxide in the blood, which blocks oxygen from getting into the body. As a result, the victim may begin to experience headaches, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion. If left untreated, carbon monoxide poisoning can result in death. So how ca n you protect your fa mily from ca rbon monoxide? The Illinois Electronic Security Association recommends these tips. First, install CO detectors in your home to alert you of unsafe gas levels. A trusted alarm company will be able to recommend appropriate detectors for your home and determine the best place to put them. You can find an alarm company that is a member of Illinois Electronic Security Association by visiting http://iesa.net/member-list/ The life span of a detector can range anywhere from five to seven years, so check the manual and replace detectors accordingly. Additionally, many wireless detectors utilize
lithium batteries, which typically last between two to five years and then need replacing. Proper maintenance of the detectors in your home help ensures their reliability. Make sure ever yone in your home knows what the detector sounds like. Develop an escape plan to ensure your family will be able to safely exit your home during an emergency situation and practice your plan as a family once a month. It’s also important to use household appliances safely. To avoid a carbon monoxide leak, have your heating system, water heater and other fuel-burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year. Only use your appliances in the way they are meant to be used, and never used damaged appliances. Carbon monoxide is a danger that is impossible to detect on your own. Enlist a security company to install a CO detector and use these tips to keep your family safe and sound.
Justice and Compassion
from Sondra Denmark An assistant state’s attorney both in Cook and Will County since 2004, Sondra Denmark was inspired to run for the 15th sub-circuit judge position by a teenage girl once arrested for carrying drugs…a case that ignited a feeling of compassion but ended with her getting the teen’s captor behind bars where he belongs. Born in Chicago on the South Side, Sondra Denmark was raised in Hazel Crest, Illinois where she attended the Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, Illinois State University majoring in public relat ions, a nd Nor t her n Illinois University College of Law where she graduated in 2004. Armed with her degree, Denmark began her career as an assistant state’s attorney in Cook County and later with Will County after the birth of her two children. Denmark said it all began with the case of a 17-year-old girl who was being charged with a Class X felony. The teen was facing a six-year prison term. When the teen was arrested, she was carrying cocaine and heroin but the man with her was not carrying any contraband;
however, the police arrested them both, according to Denmark. “W hen I saw her, she just didn’t belong. She was shaking. She never had a traffic ticket or a driver’s license.” Denmark began to dig for the truth. “It turns out that the guy she was with was using her to traffic drugs across the Midwest,” recalled Denmark. “The young lady a lmost went to prison because her attorney asked me to give her four-years and not the six-years.” Den ma rk was t roubled by t h is case saying, “something just didn’t feel right. My spirit would not rest easy.” That is when Denmark did her own homework on the girl and what she found out made her even more determine to seek just ice for t his frightened teen. “I found out she was a runaway and had been missing from her parents for three-years,” Denmark said. Given this information, Denmark contacted federal officials and was successful in getting the man who had held the teenage girl captive indicted, charged and sentenced for trafficking drugs across the Midwest and taking the teen he had held since she was 14-years-old.

“I w e nt b a c k i nt o c ou r t a nd dismissed all of the charges against her and reunited her with her family. At that moment, I realized that there are not enough people who ask those hard questions - and I needed to run for judge to make a difference. She inspired me to do that,” Denmark said. “She made me feel like I needed to do something to make a difference and judges need compassion. We need compassion in our communities. I am compassionate about securing justice for every individual.” In her spare time, Denmark loves to read and spend time with her two chi ldren. She volunteers w it h t he Autism Speaks, an autism advocacy organization where she loves to talk about curing Autism, and the Parent Teacher’s Organization. Denmark has a child with special needs and is involved in the special recreational activities in the community. If elected judge, Den ma rk w i l l ensure that justice prevails in her courtroom and with decisions that include compassion. Please vote for Sondra Denmark on March 18 and Punch 175.

Thornton Township celebrates Black History Month
Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli is shown with Ladonna Tittle, emcee for the township’s Black History Month program. _______________________________________________
Residents of Thornton Township came together for a celebration of African history during the annual Black History Month program sponsored by the township. The program focused on the rich history and heritage of the African people and featured performances by the Najwa Dance Corps, Thornwood High School Choir, Brother 3 and Sketch N’Tyme. Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli said the township is pleased to present programs like this and to be able to reach out and help the community through its many social service programs. “What we need to realize more than ever is that we need to live together, love together, see the good in one another, share what we have with each other and help each other. Be proud of your heritage as we all should be.” Leon Messi, the 12th king of a small Africa tribe in Cameron who came to the United States many years ago stressed to those in attendance about the importance of becoming connected to their African heritage. “Even though African Americans live in the United States they should not lose sight of one fact that is really important – their ancestors came from Africa. Think about a family in an African village 300 years ago who sent their daughter to the well to fetch water and she never returned. That child is you so there is a loop that needs to be closed. There is peace that needs to be given back to your ancestors.” Firewood for sale: Wi l l deliver and stack, 1 face cord of firewood $150. Messi said this is important because a people who do not make peace in themselves end up being destructive as a people. The first step in discovering your heritage is DNA testing to learn what part of Africa your ancestors came from and then it is important to immerse yourself in that culture he told those present. Those in attendance said they were really moved by the performances and the message of the program. Angela Muse found the cultural aspect of the program to be very enlightening. La Tunya Roden of Calumet City agreed. “We are not generally exposed to this so it was a real learning experience for me and my daughter. It teaches us things that we did not know about our culture,” she said. “When he said that it is a circle we need to close that really clicked with me. ANNA M. CAISON Jesus said the Father is ALWAYS at work. Sometimes we miss God working around us because we don’t know what His Work looks like, nor do we know when He’s inviting us to join Him because we spend so little, if any, quiet time in His Presence. T here’s not h i ng more f u l f i l l i ng than being able to discern where God is working and joining Him in that work. Last summer God inv ited me to join Him in His Work in the life of a certain individual. About 8pm t here was a k nock on the door. “Who is it?” I asked. No one answered. I looked out the window and saw who I thought was my brother but when I opened the door I saw it wasn’t him, it was someone unknown to me. “May I cut your lawn, ma’am?” “How much do you charge?” “Do you have a back yard?” “Yes” I replied. “Let me take a look, you don’t have any dogs do you?” “No.” He went around the back of the house to look and returned. “Ma’am, I’ll cut your front and back yard for $20.00.” While he was cutting the grass, I went back to my writing. In my mind I saw Abraham when he welcomed visitors to his tent and rushed to prepare a meal for
them. I suddenly became overwhelmed with the need to prepare dinner for this man that asked to mow my lawn. “Make some cornbread!” I heard the Holy Spirit say. So I quickly got up and made some cornbread. I heated up some spaghetti and my last piece of fried chicken. “What else, Lord? ” I asked. As soon as the question left my mouth I thought about the “Knowing God Personally” tracts on my desk. I ran upstairs and grabbed one and placed it with the napkins and fork atop the covered plate of food. When he finished, I gave him the $20 and the food I had prepared. “God told me to fix you dinner” I said. “God told you to fix me dinner?” he replied with a look of skepticism. “God said you hadn’t had your dinner, and to fix you a plate to take with you.” “Now, I know there’s a God! You just proved to me that there is! Thank you.” As he walked away from the house I could hear him say, “I’ve got dinner! Thank you, thank you.” For questions and/or comments send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438

DONNA HOLMER I don’t understand the whole loan process. It would seem that once I apply for my loan, I should be able to close quickly. After all, I can apply for financing on a new car and drive it away from the dealer the same day. Please help me understand. Dorothy & Rich – Highland I wish it was as easy to close on a mortgage as it is to close on a car loan, too, however a mortgage is much more complicated than a car loan. Ever y bit of i n for mat ion on t he mortgage application must be verified and sometimes re-verified to ensure data integrity. For example, your employer must be contacted to confirm you are employed. Your employer must provide information on how you are paid, when you started your job and your probability of continued employment. Your bank statements are reviewed to identify any deposits that are larger than your usual payroll deposits. Additional documentation will be required to provide the source of these larger deposits. T he home you a re pu rchasi ng or refinancing has to be checked out too. Your mortgage bank has to be sure the home is wor t h what you a re w i l ling
to pay for it. We do this by ordering an appraisal. We also want to be sure you are getting clear title. This is accomplished b y or der i ng a nd r e v ie w i ng a t it le commitment. Once all information is in and checked by your mortgage bank’s local processing department, the information is sent to their underwriter who will make the final loan decision. The underwriter can ask for additional information once he/she reviews the file. From start to finish, this process can take 30-45 days. In very rare instances, a mortgage can close in less than 30 days, but that’s the exception rather than the rule. This process protects the lender and the consumer to ensure you have the ability to repay the mortgage and that there is sufficient collateral for the loan. Pricing to Sell MIKE BUDER “If it sells to quick ly it wa s u nder-pr iced to b e g i n w it h ! ” T h i s i s what my seller said to me yesterday when we were discussing his price point. I said “excuse me? ” and he repeated it, nodding his head up and down. I qu ick ly t houg ht of my most logical response to this myth and said “what do you feel is a reasonable a mount of time on t he market before it sells? ” Well, I don’t know”, he said “but under 10 days is too short!” I quickly went into the process of selecting a price. FIRST, I talked about our competition; a ll t he ot her homes on t he ma rket w i l l let us k now w here we st a nd in the grand scheme of t h i ngs a nd deter m i nes our absorption rate. The absorption rate tells us what has sold and how many homes are currently available and how long it should take to sell this home. SECOND, I talked a bout pr ic i ng it r ig ht from the beginning and I used him as my example. W hen t hey boug ht t he home f rom me, a s we were look ing at homes, i f a home w a s on t he ma rket for a long t ime their first question to me was “what’s wrong with this home?” Most times I pulled up t he histor y on it a nd su re enoug h the seller has it priced to high from the beginning. THIRD, is the list to sold priced percentage which
helps us determine where homes were priced when they went on the market vs. how much they sold for. Clearly this shows how realistic folks are from the get go on their homes. I am not in the business of putting an overpriced home on the market and letting it sit there for 6, 9, 12, or 24 months. I like to come to an agreement on the price point of the home based on the above cr iter ia a nd let it sel l. T hat’s ou r goa l, r ig ht? In my opinion if a home sells in one, three, five or even 20 days, it was priced right from the beginning. T here a re a va r iet y of t h i ngs t hat come i nto play when determining the price of a home. Two majors are location and price. You can’t change the location, but you can m a ke you r pr ic e ver y attractive without “giving it away.” If you are looking to buy or sel l rea l estate ca ll Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E -m a i l : m i k e b u d e r @ r em a x . ne t , Web sit e : w w w.BuderHomes. com. Financial Advice Column
Saving Is Good … but It’s Not Investing BOB KRYGSHELD It’s a good thing to have some savings. When you put the money in a lowrisk account, you can be pretty sure it will be readily available when you need it. Nonetheless, “saving” is not “investing” — and know ing the difference could pay off for you far into the future. Think about it this way: Saving is for today, while investing is for tomorrow . You ne e d y ou r savings to pay for your da i ly ex penses, such as g rocer ies, a nd your monthly bills — mortgage, utilities, and so on. In f a c t , y ou m i g ht e v en w a nt y ou r s av i ng s to i nclude a n emergenc y f und conta ining si x to 1 2 m ont h s’ w or t h of living expenses to pay for unexpected costs, such as a new furnace or a major car repair. These are all “here and now” expenses — and you could use your sav ings to pay for them. But in t hin k ing of your longterm goals, such as college for your children and a comfortable retirement for yourself, most individuals typically can’t simply rely on their savings — they’ll need to i nvest . W hy? Because, qu ite si mply, i nvest ment s c a n g row — and you will need this growth potential to help achieve your objectives. To i l l u s t r a t e t h e difference bet ween saving and investing, let’s do a quick comparison. Suppose you put $ 200 per month into a savings account that paid hypothetical 3% interest (which is actually higher than the rates typically being paid today). After 30 years, you would have accumulated about $106,000, assuming you were in the 25% federal tax bracket. Now, suppose you put that same $200 p e r m ont h i n a t a xdeferred investment that hy pot het ic a l ly ea r ned 7% a year. At the end of 30 years, you would end up with about $243,000. (Keep in m ind t hat you would have to pay ta xes on w it hd rawa ls. Hy p ot he t ic a l s do not
include any transaction costs or fees.) This enormous d ispa r it y bet ween t he amounts accumulated in the two accounts clearly shows t he d i f ference bet ween “sav i ng ” a nd “investing.” Still, you might be thinking that investing is r isk y, wh i le sav i ngs accounts carry much less risk. And it is certainly true that investing does involve risks — investments can lose value, and there’s no guarantee that losses will be recovered. Nonetheless, if you put all your money in savings, you’re actually incurring an even bigger risk — the risk of not achieving your financial goals. In fact, a low-rate savings account might not even keep up w it h i n f l at ion, w h ic h means that, over time, you will lose purchasing power. Ultimately, the question isn’t whether you should save or invest — you need to do both. But you do need to decide how much of your financial resources to devote toward savings a nd how much towa rd investments. By paying close attention to your cash f low, you should be able to get a good idea of the best savings and investment mix for your pa r t icu la r sit uat ion. For example, if you find yourself consta nt ly dipping into your longterm investments to pay for s hor t-ter m ne e d s, you probably don’t have enough money in savings. On the other hand, if you consistently find yourself with large sums in your savings account even after you’ve paid all your bills, you might be “sitting” on too much cash — which means you should consider m ov i n g s om e of t h i s money into investments with growth potential. Saving and investing — t h a t ’s a w i n n i n g combination. The Teachers’ Forum
DEE COLLINS
JUDITH PADGETT I could not believe my ears; I could not believe anyone could be so clueless! How could this father not realize that the teacher he was interacting with needed his cooperation and support? Did he not realize that they were on the same team, work ing towa rd t he sa me object ive ? Instead, he seemed bent on berating this teacher who only had his child’s best interests at heart. I know this teacher well, and she has a great love for children as well as a great passion for helping them learn. She wanted each one to reach their full potential; day after day she poured her energies into giving her best so that the pupils under her care could one day reach their best. His object ion? T hat she bel ieved that his son could do better, rise higher and achieve more. He actually berated her for having higher expectations of his son. His pay back for her hardwork? He disdainfully dismissed her life’s work, and said in so many words, that children really didn’t learn much in the primary grades! I studied her expression and knew that to some degree; it had knocked the wind out of her sails. This year had seemed to be especially hard on her morale. Conversely, another parent had berated her for giving her child a lower grade than she felt her child deserved… I admit I do not understand the mentality that
seems far too prevalent today. I wonder if some parents realize that their attitude can ultimately help or hinder their child. I also wonder if the parents understand how disrespectful their attitude is in these circumstances. After all, a patient would not tell a surgeon how to operate, or an accountant how to add or a mechanic how to work on their vehicle. Generally, we tend to get that it is disrespectful to tell someone how to do their job. Why does it appear that some parents don’t grasp this concept? I believe t hat pa rents shou ld ta ke a n interest in their child’s education and yes, they should get involved, my concern is that adversarial attitude toward the teacher that goes nowhere and helps no one. I a lso can’t help but wonder what underlies these attitudes; could it be some unresolved issues with their own childhood teachers? My prayer is that parents would pause, take a deep breath and do some interna l inventor y, and realize the potential harm that they can in inflict that will invariably effect their children. Children are a parent’s greatest treasure and the educator is doing their utmost to tend to that treasure. They really do care, and are giving it their best, the greatest gift a parent can give in return, is to encourage them and to shoot up some heartfelt prayers on their behalf …
March is Women’s History Month. I am particularly humbled by this because I have truly embraced what it means to be a woman. Not just a female- not focusing on the biological features that distinguish us from males; but encompassing the totality of the process from female to woman. When we were born, our birth certificates list the origin of our creation: either male or female. We are not listed as boy and girl. Girl and Boy are terms that were created to somewhat lessen the reality of who we were destined to become. Focusing on girl and boy, instead of son and daughter; man or woman may keep us in a state of misunderstanding our purpose. Boy and Girl may keep us from working together for the common goal of building strong families, communities and nations because we don’t understand the roles specifically given to Man and Woma n in t he ea rt h to achieve t his holistic order. Man and Woman denote that there is a clear desire for success futuristically – the burden is carried to progress for generations to come. We are given great examples of women in our history, from Susan B Anthony to Sojourner Truth to Rosario Castellanoswomen of a l l races, creeds a nd backgrounds who determined that the freedom to be a WOMAN was one worth fighting for. The passion to discover the
depths of their authentic selves and then share these revelations to bring freedom to ot hers is admirable. W het her t he freedom was from the oppression of their minds to their actual bodies, their spirits were formidable in the cause. There is no man that is born unless he comes through a woman. Women have power to birth great vision, great people and great purpose in the earth. T he women to be celebrated a re not solely those who have made it to the printed pages of our history books; but ever y one of us- including you. We have made conscious decisions to developmenta l ly g row. We made conscious decisions to stand behind our men and their mission. We have been crusaders for our children. We have done this with grace, fortitude and strength. Women’s history month is a time set aside for every Woman to celebrate the power within! I invite you to allow Dunamis Woman, Inc. to partake in your presence at you join a room of power-packed women on March 29, 2014, as we celebrate each other and hear a Chicago legend, Merri Dee. You deserve this “Me Time”, so get your ticket today! www.dunamiswoman.com . Come net work, laugh, love, and challenge the minds of our real awesome men.
Representative Jones Secures Funds for Adult Education Technology at South Suburban College State Representative Thaddeus Jones (D-29th District) visited South Suburban College (SSC) last week to tour the adult education areas of the college. Jones recently secured a legislative award of $225,000 to enable SSC’s Division of Community Education to begin creating state-of-theart technological classrooms for its English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and Adult Secondary Education (ASE) programs. Jones joined SSC Chairman Frank Zuccarelli in visiting with staff and students while seeing classroom technology upgrades firsthand at the South Holland campus. “Providing those in our community with educational opportunities is the most effective way for people to build a better life for themselves,” said Representative Jones. “It is with that in mind that I worked in Springfield to provide grant funding to improve and modernize South Suburban College’s GED program. This will allow more adult students the opportunity to succeed in the classroom and in the workforce.” Approximately half of the funds to date have been used to purchase Epson Interactive White Boards, classroom projectors, and teacher computer stations with Internet access for 5 classrooms; 72 laptops and 5 mobile laptop computerized charging carts; and 60 new student tables. With these funds, five of nine stationary classrooms at the Main Campus are now completely remodeled with cutting edge technologies. SSC plans to remodel the other four classrooms with the remaining funds, and to eventually provide the laptops and carts for offsite locations as more funding becomes available. “The smart boards and laptops have made the classroom

more engaging for students, and it is easier for us to cover a lot of information together in each class session,” said DeShana Stanton, GED student at SSC. “I tried other programs in the past and had given up, but the SSC program gave me the opportunity to get my education back on track and the instructors have made me feel right at home here.” SSC has more aggressively pursued grant funds and
alternate funding sources in recent years in an effort to improve infrastructure and provide instructors and students with the most effective and current technologies available. The SSC Board of Trustees recently passed a resolution at their January Board Meeting to recognize and affirm Representative Jones’ commitment to education for his constituents and residents of College District 510. “We are very pleased and thankful to Representative Jones for securing these funds for SSC, and it is a pleasure to see the results and hear from our students on how it has improved their classroom experience,” said Chairman Zuccarelli. “Our goals are the same–to help our residents improve their education and employment. We look forward to continue working together with all of our elected officials to help and improve our community.” Representative Jones added, “Education is one of my top priorities and I have seen firsthand how South Suburban Col lege is prov iding a qua lit y educat ion ex perience that is directly benefiting students and their families in the Southland. I look forward to continuing to work with Chairman Frank Zuccarelli and the SSC Board of Trustees.” In Fiscal Year 2013, SSC serviced 803 students through adult education programs including 70 students that received their GED certificates, many of whom moved on to their postsecondary education at SSC. For more information, please contact Jane Ellen Stocker, Vice President of Enrollment and Community Education, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2227, email jstocker@ssc.edu or visit www.ssc.edu. SSC’s Main Campus is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

L A N S I N G A S S O C I AT I O N F O R COMMUNIT Y EVENTS (L ACE) FAT TUESDAY A HUGE SUCCESS: Planners 1st printed up 150 tickets to the Tuesday March 4, 2014 pre-Lenten bash. They were quickly snapped up and the public started clamoring for more, so another 150 were printed up and quickly spoken for! The event, the 1st in a yearlong series of fun events, was held at the Lansing Country Club, from 6 to 11. In between there was a delicious Mardi Gras type buffet, a candy buffet (my personal favorite) and music, music, music! Kudos to planners Laurie Crosby, Chairman; Lynn Cartwright, Co-Chairman and a LACE Director; JoEllyn Kelley LACE VP, Jeannie McCall LACE Secretary; Patty Eidam, LACE Director, Debbie Waitekus, LACE Treasurer, Bob Orzel, LACE Director, Garry Buell LACE Director, Bev Croak; Kim Follmar, Scott Stephanuik; Cindy and Jeff Beyer and Joe and Jen Saia. The event drew residents from all over Lansing and the burbs’ in addition to Northwest Indiana. Young, old and in betweeners took part in the festivities.
