The open house will showcase the innovative freshmen academic program, the seamless process for transfer students, renovated classrooms, labs, and library, and GSU’s on-campus student residences. Prospective students and parents will also be able to meet with Governors State faculty, academic advisors, and financial aid counselors. “We are excited to show off all that GSU has to offer and why GSU should be their first choice for higher education. Potential students will find out exactly what they’ll need to become a successful student here,” says Yakeea Daniels, Director of Admissions and Student Recruitment. For more information or to RSVP, contact the Office of Admissions at (708) 534-4490 or gsunow@govst.edu. To register for Open House, go to www.govst.edu/openhouse. Group Lends Its Youthful Voice To Local Pro-Life Efforts
There is a new a lly on t he front lines of t he prolife movement in northwest Indiana. Heart for the Next Generation has lately been the leading voice on the hill outside Planned Parenthood in Merrillville. Volunteers of HFTNG meet four days a week outside the clinic, participating in prayer, fasting, singing, and counseling, with hopes of changing hearts and minds. The group maintains a frequent presence on the hill during the 40 Days for Life campaign, which focuses on shutting down the only remaining abortion provider in Lake County. “We change the atmosphere while we are there,” said HFTNG Assistant Director Scott Heldreth. “We are not motivated out of frustration or anger. We are there to offer God’s love to young women going into the clinic out of fear,” he said. Heldreth also emphasized the strength of standing together as families. “Many of our volunteers come in families,” he said. “Everyone plays a role. We don’t want anyone to come and feel like a spectator.” Heldreth’s own 17-year-old daughter, Abigail, is a sidewalk counselor, and has experienced the impact up close. “I’ve seen many women have a change of heart on the scene,” she
Lilly Burnett, left, leads volunteers of Heart for the Next Generation in songs of worship during the 40 Days for Life campaign. _________________________________________
said. Heldreth, who has long been active in the pro-life movement, helped found the organization just two years ago. It began in Dayton, Ohio, and last year was recruited by
Living Stones Church in Crown Point. Heart was started with the vision of training young leaders in the cause for life. Its mission is focused on preparing youth to engage in the moral and cultural issues of the day. The quest has not been confined to one region. Part of its vocation is traveling around the country to places in the most need, where there is demand for its voice. “Christ demonstrated by going out to the lost. He was present among the people,” Heldreth said. “As Christians, we are mandated to go.” The mission does not end with activism, however. The Christian organization has also been a financial resource for pregnant women in need, providing everything from clothing to baby showers. “A lot of women just need encouragement,” Heldreth said. “We are there to give them hope.” Heart is currently sharing its role on the hill with Lake County Right to Life, which has traditionally coordinated the event. The collaboration is intended to keep a constant, prayerful presence in front of Planned Parenthood for 40 days.

ANNA M. CAISON Throughout my childhood I always felt like a square peg trying to fit into a circular mold. No matter how hard I tried to fit in – I’d always end up being the object of someone’s joke or prank. I remember one event where God turned the table on a group of pranksters. I had joined the Youth Choir in hopes of developing meaningful relationships with the other youth at my church. I loved singing, but I struggled to stay in key. My voice always f luctuated between 2nd soprano and tenor. On day the directormusician (who was 20) decided to let me lead a song. “Me? You’re going to give me a song to lead?” I couldn’t believe my ears! The director and a few of the older teens who led most of the songs were so supportive. “Yes, Ann, we want you to lead this new song, you’ll do great.” We went over the verse a couple of times, and the rest of the rehearsal was focused on the chorus of the song. T hat fol low i ng Su nday, sta nd i ng before the congregation, the director beckoned for me to come to the front and take the mic. When I opened my mouth, a clear, soulful, melodious voice sang through me that I had never heard before.
Handyman: Spring clean up, landscape repair, tree planting, rock and mulch repair, painting, trim bushes, trees, gutter cleaning, fence repair, deck staining, other services. My prices won’t be beat. Please contact Frank. 708-975-1219
Not only was I awed at the sound of my voice, but others were too, as they stood with shocked and surprised faces at what they heard. I didn’t find out till later that I had been set up to fail. But God received glory that day when He enabled me to sing with the voice of an angel. Apostle Paul wrote that God chooses pe ople w hom t he world c on sider s “weak” to put the strong to shame, and selects those that the world considers insignificant and treated with contempt, to depose the arrogant and proud so no man can boast of his superiority before God. I’m still a square peg, there’s nothing about me t hat wou ld d raw world ly attention. Yet, I continue to praise God for my inabilities – because my inabilities (weaknesses) allow God to repeatedly do the impossible through me. So, to all of my square peg friends, REJOICE for you are in a position for God to do great and mighty things through you for His glory. For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60409.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Que st ion : I ow n a home w it h a n appraised value of $368,000 and little left on the mortgage. Is now the time to sell or hold? An agent wants to list the home for $300,000. Answer: Why do you want to sell? Is there some place you would like to move? Do you have a surplus of cash? If not, and if the property is worth $368,000, why would you want to sell for $300,000? That’s better than a 20 percent discount and you haven’t even bargained with a buyer. You need to speak with other brokers in your local community to determine a
market value for the property -- have them each prepare a listing presentation for you. Then determine the pros and cons of a sale -- for you. Since it’s discovery, and ten years after its reclassification to dwarf planet, Pluto is still plagued by its lack of true planet status. This begs the question, if Pluto isn’t a planet, then what is? What made the International Astronomica l Union reclassif y Pluto in 2006? On March 19th, the Adler Planetarium will be opening their newest temporar y exhibition, What Is a Planet?, which explores the answers to these very questions. The accepted definition of a planet has changed quite a bit over the past 500 years. At various moments the term has been used to describe the Sun, the Moon, and asteroids. And would you believe that Earth—the most familiar planet of all—hasn’t always been considered a planet?! So how do you def ine a pla net? A s scientists learn more about how the Universe works, they make discoveries that don’t fit neatly into old ways of thinking. In What is a Planet?, visitors will discover that new
(Family Features) Even a mild case of the flu or a powerful cold can leave you feeling run down and out of sorts for days or even weeks. While many ailments must simply run their course, there are many steps you can take to fight your way back to good health. The first step is identif ying whether you’re fighting a cold or the flu, which can be tricky because many of the symptoms are similar. However, colds tend to come on more slowly, while the flu hits rather quickly. Often cold symptoms stay limited to your head (runny nose, sneezing, sore throat), while a flu affects other areas of your body with aches, fatigue and sometimes digestive i r r itat ion such as nausea or d ia r rhea. Generally, flu symptoms are more intense than cold symptoms. Sometimes, but not always, the flu brings a fever or 100 F or more, along with chills and sweats. Follow this advice to help fight cold and flu, and get you back on your feet: * Stay home and rest, and avoid contact with other people. Also wash your hands frequently to prevent infecting others or re-infecting yourself. * If you are at risk of developing flu-related complicat ions, consu lt a doctor about whether prescription antiviral drugs are advisable. Typically, these prescriptions are most effective when taken within the first 48 hours that you become ill.
* Use over-the-counter remedies to ease s y m pt om s a nd m a k e y ou r s e l f m or e com for t able. For ex a mple, t reat cold sy mptoms, such as a sore t hroat, w it h a medicated lozenge such as all natural Fisherman’s Friend, which provide quick relief of sore throats, coughs and congestion with the maximum dosage of menthol per lozenge. * Over-t he-cou nter pa i n rel ievers a nd decongesta nt s ca n a lso be helpf u l i n managing symptoms; a pharmacist can guide you to the products best suited to your needs, and also help you avoid medications that may conflict with prescriptions you take on a regular basis. * Avoid becoming dehydrated, which can exacerbate your symptoms and lead to more serious health risks. Water, juice and warm soups or broths are good options to keep fluids in your system. * Adjust your climate. Opt for a temperature t hat is warm but not hot, and if air is overly dry, add moisture with a cool mist humidifier or vaporizer. Even the healthiest people encounter germs and get sick from time to time. Taking care of yourself and giving your body the chance to heal is the best treatment. Hammer Toes
Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

I Like Pistachio Muffins!
WOODROW WILCOX On Monday, March 7, 2016, I helped some people with a medical bill. One person got the bill but did not u ndersta nd it. She asked a relative to help her and the relative brought her to our office. It was one of the easiest and simplest cases that I’ve had in a long time. After rev iew ing the bill and talking with them, I knew what to do. I made a phone call and spoke to someone with whom I had worked other cases. That person in a billing department respected me and I respected him based on our past encounters to resolve the medical bill mistakes of other people. I e x pl a i ne d w h at I thought was wrong with t he bi l l a nd w hy. He reviewed the matter and a g re e d w it h me. Ver y
quickly, a bill for over $500 disappeared for the client that I was helping. T h e n e x t d a y, t h e pat ient ’s relat ive w ho brought the medical bill problem to me gave me a gift to thank me again for sav i ng h is relat ive over $ 500. He gave me pistachio muffins. I never had any pistachio muffins. So, I t r ied one. I LIK E PISTACHIO MUFFINS! He has saved clients of that insurance agency over one million dollars by fighting m ista kes a nd f raud i n the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$.

level they once did. People with fibromyalgia have a myriad of symptoms that can come and go unpredictably and vary in severity. The one constant is that they are never completely symptom-free; they are always in pain. When you look at how every area of a patient’s life is impacted and the way others must step up to fill in the voids left when all the patients’ efforts are focused on just getting through the day, it becomes clear that fibromyalgia truly hurts everyone. It’s not just patients that suffer; the chronically ill place a larger burden on the healthcare and insurance industries a nd bu si ne s s e s t h at mu st c over t he cost ly ex penses associated w it h t hei r treatment, medications and sometimes hospitalizations. Society as a whole is also impacted when patients are physica lly u nable to work a nd must depend on government assistance to survive. Fibromites Unite invites you to join us on May 14, 2016 at Lencioni’s Pub & Banquets to show your support. Only by working together can we make an impact by raising awareness and funds to further research and education. Tickets are on sale now for the low price of $20. Thornton Township Salutes Women of Honor
14
Members of Thornwood High School’s Cygnet Club helped served at the 2016 Women of Honor Brunch hosted by Thornton Township’s Human Relations Commission. Pictured with Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli and Trustee and Event Chair Joyce Washington are the 2016 Women of Honor Jackie Bange, Shirley Drewenski, Pamela Christmas and Robin Kelly. __________________________________________________________________________________
Thornton Township paid tribute to four special women in celebration of Women’s Histor y Month during their annual Women of Honor Brunch recently hosted by its Human Relations Commission last week. Those recognized were: Jackie Bange, weekend anchor for WGN-TV, Pamela Christmas, special needs advocate; Shirley Drewenski, alderwoman, 1st Ward in Harvey, and Robin Kelly, U.S. Congresswoman, 2nd District. The program began eight years as a way to recognize outstanding women from all walks of life. After graduating from the University of Florida with a degree in telecommunications Jackie Bange started her career in 1986 as a reporter and weekend anchor for WPECTV, a CBS affiliate in West Palm Beach Florida, moving to WMAQ TV in 1990 and then to WGN in 1993. She is an award winning reporter. In 2005 Bange won the award for “Best Hard News Feature” and received the Peter Lisagor Award for hard news and in-depth reporting in 2009. She is actively involved in several organizations serving on the board of Michael Matters, an organization helping to fight brain cancer and raising funds for A Safe Place, a domestic violence prevention organization. Bange also mentors students at Elmhurst College and serves at her local food pantry because she believes we can all impact someone’s life “Each day is a blessing; I have the privilege to try to make a difference in someone’s life every day,” she said. Pamela Christmas lives by the important lesson taught by her parents that regardless of what happened in your life – it’s your decision on whether it destroys you or makes you stronger. She became the parent of a child with severe disabilities in 1989. Doctors said her daughter would probably live her life in an institution. Christmas chose to raise her daughter Sonia and become an advocate for those with special needs. Through the years she learned that there were not as many outlets for people with disabilities. She continues to search for opportunities for her daughter to participate in and is an active participant and volunteer for the township’s dances and outings for people with special needs. Sonia is kept busy with swimming, bowling and other

social events offered by the township. Christmas is a member of St. Ann Church in Lansing and is active in fundraising events for special needs. She makes sure that her daughter never misses an opportunity to participate in the parties and dances offered by St. Ann’s and the Knights of Columbus. Christmas said, “Hardships are not always obstacles but can be blessings in disguise.” Shirley Drewenski is a third generation proud Harvey girl. She received her Associate Degree from South Suburban College and later completed her bachelor degree from Purdue University. Drewenski is a certified facilitator and master trainer from Langevin Learning Service. She has been a community volunteer for more than 30 years serving as a catechism instructor for St. John Church, fundraising coordinator for various organizations, volunteer for New Hope Center serving people with developmental disabilities and an active member of the Democratic Organization. In 1995 she was the first woman elected to the Calumet Union Drainage District 1 and in 2011 became the first female to serve as 1st Ward Alderwoman in Harvey where she is currently serving her second term. She believes strongly in accountability and maintaining open lines of communication with residents. Her favorite event to host is the Christmas Santa Ride with Santa stopping at homes to deliver goodie bags, food baskets and take photos. “Believe! All things are possible with hard work, and above all God’s Grace,” she said. Robin Kelly earned her B.A. in psycholog y, M.A. in counseling from Bradley University and her PhD in Political Science from Northern Illinois University. She began her government service as a community relations director in the Village of Matteson. As a member of the Illinois House of Representatives she led the fight for landmark legislation to protect victims of domestic violence and improve public safety. Kelly also served as chief of staff of the Illinois Treasurer’s Office. She was elected to Congress in 2013. She is a member of several House Caucuses including the Congressional Black Caucus and Women’s Caucus and chairs CBCs Healthcare Braintrust which works to address

health disparities. She has worked to expand economic opportunity and promote public safety. She serves on several boards including the Board of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, a bipartisan, nonprofit research and advocacy think tank that works to promote social and economic justice. She also volunteers at the Rich Township Food Pantry and serves as a Bradley University trustee. In 2009 she was inducted into Bradley’s Centurion Society for honored alumni. Her words of advice are, “Don’t be led by your problems but instead be pushed by your dreams.” Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli commended the honorees for making a difference in their community and serving as role models. “We’ve just heard some compelling stories that clearly show that whatever field you choose – what stands out is the “service” that each of the honorees has contributed to making America better. We all must make daily efforts to mentor, empower and help the next generation of women and men, “said Supervisor Zuccarelli. “What Americans have been promised is “Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness” – we can only achieve these blessings if we all remember that “service” to others is what we need to do every day.”

T h is cou ld be a problem, especially since, a s ment ioned above, women a re a lso out of t h e w or k f or c e l on g e r and may have less years to contribute. Consider including in your holdings growth-oriented vehicles consistent w it h you r risk tolera nce, such as stocks. Stocks are more su sc ept ible to ma rket volatility, but you can help reduce the impact of this volatility by owning a mix of investments, including stocks, bonds and cash. • Talk to your spouse about Socia l Securit y. If your spouse starts collecting Social Security at 62 (the earliest age of eligibility), t he mont h l y b e ne f it s could be reduced, perhaps by as much as 25%. This reduct ion cou ld a f fect you if you ever become a w idow, because once you reach you r ow n “full” retirement age, you may qualify for survivor benefits of 100% of what your deceased spouse had been receiving — and if that amount was reduced, y o u’ l l g e t a r e d u c e d benefit. Discuss this issue well before it’s time to receive Social Security. U l t i m a t e l y , Inter nat iona l Women’s Day celebrates t he freedom of women to live their lives without limits. And by making the right moves, you may one day be celebrating your own financial freedom.
International Women’s Day w a s obser ve d on Ma r c h 8 . A r ou nd t he world, event s honored women’s achievements. Yet , w omen st i l l f ac e challenges – such as their financial situations. So if you’re a woman, consider steps you ca n ta ke to help move toward your important financial goals. First of all, be aware of the potential obstacles faci ng women : lower ea rnings t ha n men, longer l i fe spa n s t h a n men and more time out of t he work force t ha n men. This last element is particularly important, bec au se w hen women leave the workforce for extended periods, typically to care for young children or older pa rent s, t hey will have much less time to cont r ibute to t hei r 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan. Whether you fit the above profile perfectly or not, and whether you’re married or single, you must take action on your own behalf. Here are some suggestions: • Ramp up your retirement pla n cont ribut ions. Contribute as much as y ou c a n a f f or d . ( You w i l l have to pay ta xes on w it hd r aw a l s ; a l so, withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) • Cont r ibute to a n IR A. Even if you have a 401(k) or simi la r pla n, y o u’r e p r o b a b l y s t i l l el ig ible to open a n IR A. Contributions to a traditional IRA may be taxdeductible, while earnings ca n grow ta x deferred. If you invest in a Roth IR A, your contributions are not deductible, but a ny ea r n i ngs g row t h is dist ributed ta x f ree, provided you’ve had your account at least five years a nd don’t sta r t ta k i ng

Dedicated Pharmacist Retires From Fagen Pharmacy On March 22, we will honor Joe Tuzikowski, RPh for 47 years as a dedicated pharmacist. He has spent the last 36 years w ith Fagen P h a r m a c y. G e r a l d A . Fagen, President and founder of Fagen Pharmacy will be there at 9am to personally thank him for his service. We are grateful for his dedication and care for every patient. When asked what he will miss he said, “Helping people, earning the trust of patients, treating them and treating them as I would want to be treated.” Joe has served the community long enough
that he now cares for the adult children of customers from long ago. Joe told me of his wonderful plans for retirement. Joe and his wife Maggie, of 47 years, already have trips booked. He also plans to focus on giving back to the community through volunteer work that includes his church. Along with Maggie, his family time is enjoyed with his daughter and 2 grandchildren aged 6 & 11 years. You are invited to stop in to wish him well on his new journey. We will have cake that is provided by Ultra Foods to celebrate his retirement. Joe will be there from 9am-7pm on his last day on Tuesday,March 22. We wish Joe and his family all the best. You will be missed Joe!

Memories And Money MIKE BUDER One of t he f irst questions someone naturally asks themselves as a renter is, “why should I become a homeowner?” There are many reasons, but probably the first one is the pride in knowing that you have established a foundation for building personal wealth as well a s a b a s i s f or f ut u r e memories. T h i n k back to you r childhood, many of your fondest memories may be from events on your front porch, backyard or inside you r ch i ld hood home. Holidays, birthdays and most other family events t y pica l ly took place in your home grow ing up. A ny t h i ng you or you r parents wanted to do to your home, within reason of course, were options of your choosing. Besides k now ing t hat you have t a ken a major step i n financial independence, buy i ng a home a lso creates a sense of pride t hat few t hings ca n r e p l i c a t e . A s i d e f r om t he emot iona l upl i f t of homeow nership, a ny decision you ma ke involving money has got to make sense. There are few things anyone can do that have a greater impact on t heir f ina nces t ha n owning a home. T he rea sons to buy you r f i rst home a re nu merous, not on ly today, but anytime. Boa rd of Consumer Fina nce found t hat t he average net wor t h of renter s w a s $ 4,0 0 0 compared to the average net worth of homeowners being $184,400. One of the largest tax deductions most people report each year is t he interest they pay on their mortgage. While not exact, on a $150,000 mortgage w ith an interest rate of 4%, the amount of the first year’s interest would be approximately $6,000. For a family earning $70,000 in a federal ta x bracket of 2 5 % , t h i s a mou nt s to sig n i f ica nt sav i ngs. Homeowners also get to deduct the property taxes paid from their ta xable income. And last but not le a s t , a s home ow ner s ma ke each mor tgage p a y m e nt t h e y r e d u c e their mortgage debt and i ncrea se equ it y at t he sa me t i me t hei r home appreciates in value. CHICAGO FEDER AL RESERVE SENIOR ECONOMIST TA L K S A BOU T THE ECONOM Y: I n a h ig h l y i n for m at ive discussion about where the US is headed, economica lly, Willia m A. Strauss, t he Senior Economist and Economic Advisor of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, sounded caut iously opt imist ic a ll t he while, gently as he could, painting a dismal picture of the State of Illinois. Strauss is pictured here March 3, 2016 at the podium at Dynasty Banquets in Hammond, and spoke to a full house of Ca lumet Area Indust r ia l Com m ission members a nd guests, movers and shakers of many of the Region’s most influential businesses. “We a re Hoosier s now,” joke d C A IC President Ted Stalnos, of the first ever CAIC meeting in Indiana. Comparing the two economies, that of Illinois and Indiana, the Hoosier state came out far ahead of the Land of Lincoln. “Unemployment in Illinois is approaching 14 percent, (half the workforce not working) not the numbers usua lly associated w it h t his,” St rauss related. “More businesses a re mov ing out (of Illinois) than are moving in and wages are stagnant,” he noted. Indiana, by contrast is faring much better w ith increasing growth in many sectors such a s hou si ng a nd ma nu fac t u r i ng. A nd although predicting where the economy is going on any given year (the Fed meets 8 times a year with reports 4 times a year) is an inexact science, some events can be tabulated. Consumer spending, education or lack thereof and standards of living can be measured city by city and generation by generation. Strauss thinks that one of the US’s major problems is our young people and a basic lack of education or at least the kind of education that will translate i nto m idd le age dol la rs a nd fa m i l ies achiev ing middle class status. He sees moderate growth across the country in the next few years and no drastic problems in t he foreseeable f uture. But no rea l grow th either. Reassuring but nothing to write home about. For more in depth information about the country’s economy and more loca lly, Chicago, v isit w w w. chicagofederalreserve.org or nationally, w w w.federa lreser ve.gov.
