She is around 1.5 yrs old, fully vetted, and LOVES to be loved. Lola is perfect at giving hugs and cuddles and people are her favorite thing. She would prefer to be the only pet in the household. They just do not get any sweeter than Lola. Even though she is young, she is very well mannered. The Vet guesses she’s an AmStaff/French Bulldog mix. Her adoption fee is $250 includes heartworm/fecal testing, vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchipping. Lola deserves a loving forever home. To meet Lola, please email us at ABRAangels@gmail.com. Warts

Warts are a bump in the skin characterized by pain with squeezing of the wart. They are caused by a virus which invades the individual cells of the skin. There have been many treatments available through the years ranging from voodoo to laser surgery, including use of acids and burning out the wart. Therefore, the treatment should be done with the patients lifestyle in mind. If you have any questions concerning warts or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I hired a home inspector to evaluate a residence I’m trying to buy. Now that the inspection is done, it seems that I was ripped off. My inspector found a long list of problems with the house, including defects w it h t he electrica l wiring, the furnace, the skylights and a whole lot more. But when I presented the sellers with the report and demanded repair of each and every item, they broke off negotiations and refused to sell me the house. W hat’s the use of a home inspection if all it does is blow the deal or force me to buy the house in as-is condition?

All vintage rolling pins, character mugs, fly and bait cast reels, Morton cups and sugar bowl, horse collar. 708418-0343

Answer: First, no one is forcing you to buy the house. Your inspector has provided you with pertinent information. W hat you do with that knowledge is a matter of choice, to be exercised with prudence and thoughtful consideration. Second, common sense dictates that if the home has problems with the electrical wiring and furnace, the inspection report for which you paid hundreds of dollars may have saved you thousands. Finally, it is essential that you gain a clearer understanding of the position an inspection report occupies in a real estate transaction. The purpose of a home inspection is to get a clear indication as to the overall quality and general condition of the property. Upon viewing the report, you need to ma ke some reasonable assessments: 1. Is this house still worth buying? 2. What repair items are considered immediate structural or safety issues that sellers should be expected to address? 3. W hat items should be regarded

as routine maintenance, not requiring immediate attention? T he i n s p e c t ion r e p or t i s not a shopping list of demands with which to extort the seller. There is a big difference between presenting a reasonable list of repa ir requests, consistent w it h t he property’s asking price, and issuing a manifesto of demands. Negotiations should transpire until a mutually satisfying result is achieved. Defects involving electrical wiring & gas fixtures are conditions that need to be addressed, and most sellers understand this. Repair requests involving significant problems of t his nature a re usua l ly regarded as reasonable and acceptable. Common miscellaneous conditions such as gate repairs, door adjustments, repainting or the pruning of shrubbery are included in an inspection report pu r el y for d i s c lo s u r e pu r p o s e s . A thorough inspector will inform you of such conditions so that you will be fully aware of what you are buying. Too many transactions fall through because buyers use a home inspection report as a reimbursement of grievances. My recommendation is to weigh t he importance of every disclosure in the report, with the understanding that there is no such thing as a perfect house.

The troop organized, prepared and served brunch to more than 100 family members staying at the Home. The brunch included biscuits and gravy, 3 kinds of egg casseroles, french toast, pancakes, bacon, cereals, yogurt parfaits, fresh fruit and muffins. Over 42 personal goodie bags were collected and donated. The troop also made over 50 treat bags for the families to enjoy a quick snack. Once your loan package has been sent to the lender, there are a number of things you should avoid doing that will change your financial picture. Remember, the lender is looking for stability and consistency. If you want the best interest rate, keep that in mind. Here are a few things to consider: The lender is looking to see what your source of down payment is. Your lender will most likely ask you to provide proof of your liquid assets. This includes bank statements for checking and savings accounts, verification of investments, and any other liquid assets. Some of the things they ask for may seem trivial, but keep in mind, if you are planning a move to a new home, it’s important to have all documentation readily available. If the lender asks for cancelled checks or deposit receipts to meet certain conditions, you want to be able to find these things quickly to avoid delaying the closing of your loan. Make sure your paper trail is easy to document, and don’t move money from one account to another. Major pu rcha s e s t ip t he s c a le s against your favor. Avoid making any major purchases. You might be thinking about purchasing new appliances for the new home. This is not the time to do it. Avoid making any major purchases on jewelry, appliances, furniture, vacations,

or anything with a significant price tag. Buy ing or leasing a ca r ca n ma ke a negative impact on the way the lender v iews your financial status. This is a big ticket item that dramatically affects your debt-to-income ratio. By tacking a car payment onto your existing debt, you reduce the amount that you will qualify for in a home loan. A $400 a month car payment can reduce your approved loan limit by as much as $50,000. Think about doing this after your loan is approved if you really need it. If you have to change jobs, you may be asked to document why this change occurred. If you are changing jobs to increase your income, that’s a no-brainer for the lender. If you have an erratic work history to start with, another job change may make it look worse for you. If you are considering starting your own business, again, this is something to consider after your loan is funded. Donna Holmer is Sa les Ma nager/ S e n i or L o a n O f f i c e r f or D i a m ond Residentia l Mortgage Cor poration in Merrillville, Indiana. ANNA M. CAISON Storm Vulcan hit the Chicagoland area early Wednesday morning around 2am and lasted at least in my area till 11:30am. Awesome Beauty! I grabbed my camera and began snapping pictures. The birds undaunted by the storm sang their song of praise to the creator. In honor of God and His magnificent display of winter beauty I re-submit the following article from last year. “Who taught the sun where to stand in the morning? Who told the ocean you can only come this far? And who showed the moon where to hide till evening? Whose words alone can catch a falling star? Well I know my Redeemer lives, I know my Redeemer lives. All of creation testifies, this life within me cries, I know my Redeemer lives.” My Redeemer Lives by Nicole C. Mullins Everyday this week I got up early for work, so I could witness the marvel of sunrise. Today, high above the roof tops across from my perch behind the picture window in my living room, I watched as the sky shed its dark blue covering revealing shades of deep rose, green and yellow-orange colors. The lawn was covered with a lacy blanket of untouched snow. The tall evergreen trees and shrubs that stood guard in the front of the house looked majestic and elegant dressed in its garments of pure white. And for the next

15 minutes, everything lay in quiet praise before the creator. Scripture (Romans 1:18-32) tells us that the truth of God’s existence, His character and divine nature is seen in the things He created. But man, in his quest to rule himself, rejected God and His plan for humanit y. The result of man’s defection from God is seen in the depravity of our society. God in His love for man has provided a way back to Him through the life of His son Jesus. Listen to the rest of the words of Nicole Mullins’ song, My Redeemer Lives. “The very same God that spins things in orbit, runs to the weary, the worn and the weak, And the same gentle hands that hold me when I’m broken, they conquered death to bring me victory. He lives to take away my shame, and He lives forever I’ll proclaim That the payment for my sins, was the precious life He gave, And now He’s alive and there’s an empty grave! I know my Redeemer lives, I know my Redeemer lives. Let all creation testif y, let this life within me cry, I know my Redeemer lives.” For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Social Security “Killed” The Widow! WOODROW WILCOX A widow who is a client of our insurance agency phoned me on February 28, 2014. She reported that the Social Security Administ rat ion had “killed” her. Recently, her husband passed away. She went to a local Social Security office to inform them of her husband’s passing. An employee asked for her husband’s identification information and for her identification information because she was t he informer. She provided what the Social Security employee requested. A f e w w e e k s l a t e r, she got a letter that was addressed to her family which stated t hat t hey were discont inuing her Medica re Pa r t D prescr ipt ion d r ug coverage because t hey learned that SHE – THE WIDOW – WAS DEAD! Someone at the Social Security Administration recorded in its records that BOTH the deceased husba nd a nd t he ver y living widow were dead. The error by one or more

federa l government employees has taken the widow weeks to work to fix. It seems that there is no systematic way for correcting a mistake like that by a federal employee. It seems that no one in the federal government ca n i mag i ne a federa l employee ever making a mistake. It is easy for the widow to imagine that a federal employee could make a mistake. It is easy for me to imagine that, too. Is it easy for you to imagine that? Note : Woodrow Wi lcox i s t he s en ior me d ic a l bi l l case worker at Sen ior Ca re Insu ra nce Ser vices in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over one m i l l ion dol la rs by correcting medica l bill errors that were caused by mista kes in t he Medica re system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDIC A R E PROBLEM $ (w w w.solv ingmedicareproblems.com).

Free The Slaves!

Who would have believed after the civil war ended and the slaves were freed that once again in the twenty first century we would be facing the awful issue of slavery. The slavery we are fighting today is occurring in our communities, in our United States of America and all around the world. That slaver y is happening because of human trafficking. It is estimated that there are 27 million adults and 13 million children around the world who are victims of human trafficking and that 80% of trafficking involves sexual exploitation and 19% involves labor exploitation. Human trafficking is t he t h i rd la rgest i nter nat iona l crime industry (behind illegal drugs and arms trafficking). It reportedly generates a profit of $32 billion every year and of that number $15.5 billion is made in industrialized countries. I.D. Bracelet, no name on it. Asking $18. The Women’s Ministry at Village Church, 14849 93rd Avenue, Dyer, Indiana has a passion to help those who cannot help themselves. On Saturday, March 29th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. they are sponsoring a garage sale, bake sale, selling breakfast and lunch items; coffee, rolls, hot dogs, chips, popcorn and drinks. All proceeds will go to the organization WAR International (Women at Risk) for the U.S. Training Center Project which will help those who are rescued out of this horrendous slavery. Women at Risk was started in 2006 to help those women and children who are caught up in the sex trade. Their purpose and passion is to give voice to the silenced cries of the oppressed, wrap arms of love around them, and whisper messages of pur pose a nd dignit y into their brokenness. The

local Women at Risk representative will also be at this event and will be selling the jewelry and miscellaneous items that the women that are rescued out of slavery make to earn a living. You may be asking if the issue of t ra f f ick i ng is a f fec t i ng ou r loc a l c om mu n it ie s. Un for t u n atel y t he answer is yes. On January 23rd, 2014 the Munster Police Department hosted a session on human trafficking in the auditorium at Munster High School, to inform the public on how kids are being recruited, the impact on victims and the community and what is being done to combat the issue and protect the children. You may say how can I help? You can start by coming out on Saturday, March 29th to Village Church in support of this fundraiser.

MIKE BUDER T R U T H I N A DV ERTISING. Simple concept, but i n t he real estate world it can get compl ic ated. T he temptation to embellish is sometimes irresistible to a home seller. This is a formu la t hat w i l l for sure frustrate buyers and alienate real estate agents t hat show you r home. Recently, I was showing a home to a couple that has a large family. We have been on the hunt for a 4 bedroom home in their desired location for quite some t i me. W hen we walked into a home with a large enclosed sunroom with a closet, the husband said “I hope they aren’t counting this as the 4th bedroom!” and it hit me how many houses we’ve seen that claimed to have 4 bedrooms and really did not. Here was a family that really needed 4 bedrooms, not 3 bedrooms and an office, not 3 bedrooms and an attic space you could build out, but 4 bedrooms. They’d seen it all in terms of creative advertising, and not surprisingly were getting a little jaded. As a real estate agent, I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen vacant lots classified as single-family homes---“Oh, you want a house with that?” Not to ment ion adver t ising features that did not even exist in a home. Buyers do not wa nt to look at blueprints and un-filed permits. The seller’s side of the equation I think

i s a l s o ver y ne g at i ve. Watching day after day of buyers trot through your home and reject it can be disheartening (and make you feel u n necessa r i ly desperate). You’re going to start thinking that people hate your house. When in reality they just hate that it doesn’t have a gourmet k itchen…l i ke you sa id it did. Now ultimately, u n less you sudden ly decide to upg rade, t he buyer for your home will h ave to be ok ay w it h Formica countertops and v inyl f loors. Trust me, people buy homes w ith Formica countertops and vinyl floors every day. The key is to attract buyers who want the attributes that your home actually has. By simply painting a n accu rate pict u re of your home in advertising, you will avoid frustrating buyers, alienating buyer’s agents, and wasting your own time. Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES One of our cars leaks oi l i n t he ga rage. I’m talking about a few drips here and there, nothing more than a tiny puddle. It can really stink up the place. So I can’t imagine being squished in a crowded raft, with a foot thick of oil underneath, and then more sprayed all over us. This week we continue with the story of the SS Peter Si lvester L iber t y Ship under attack, retold through a riveting W WII letter of Sgt. Lewis Haan: S o I w a s s t a n din g around with my legs bent so my knees were almost dragging on the ground be c au se I di dn’t want broken legs to top it off. I then left that sailor, and that’s the last I ever seen him. The ship was still listing badly, and the skipper of the ship gave us 19 fellas who were standing by our rafts orders to go over to the side and get into the rafts, but not the rest of the men. I don’t know why, but he did. Over we went--over the side and into the rafts. He told us not to get ourselves loose from the ship but to just get into the rafts because if the sub left, we might be able to repair the ship if they didn’t

torpedo us again. We w e re all pret t y calmed down by that time and were sitting in our rafts, and the kid next to me on the raft said, “Lou feel the water and see how much oil is on top of it”. I did, and the water must have had about a foot or more of fuel oil over it, which never caught fire. Lucky for us or I wouldn’t be writing this letter now! But anyway, I was just feeling it and all of the sudden another ferocious explosion! They had sent a n o t h e r t o r p e d o i nt o the already crippled port side, right under our raft. Water, oil, cargo, wreckage and everything under the moon was flying in the air, but fortunately nothing but oil and water fell on us. Right at the very part of the ship where we were sitting… To be continued next week. Can I ever own a house again? ARTHUR V. VEAL IV T he la st few yea rs have been hard on a lot of families. Many families have lost a home or fallen behind on payments. For t he fa m i l ies t hat have lost a home, t here a re usua lly more quest ions than answers after losing a home. How bad is my credit? Wi l l I ever ow n again? Do I ever want to own again? These are just some of the questions that many families have had to face after losing a home. Ma ny fa m i l ies a re hopeful that they will own a home again. They are eager to start the process to buy a new home. With the new mortgage rules and all the ups and downs in today’s market, many don’t know what to do first to get into position to buy a home after a financial hardship. Here are some tips to help you start on the path to home ownership again. Start today… Whatever caused you to fall behind or lose your home is the past. You must let t hat go and begin to focus on t he f ut u re a nd mov i ng forward. You must focus on assessing where you are financially now and where your credit is. Once you have done that, find out where you need to be in order to buy a house again. Many people lose a home and they dwell on the fact that they had a job loss or a financial setback and they never make plans to start moving forward again.

Ma ke a pla n… A f ter you figure out where you are and where you need to be then come up with your own personal plan on how you can get there. Nothing is forever, not bankruptcy, not foreclosure, and not job loss. The old saying goes “Ti me hea ls a l l wounds”. While that may be t r ue you st i l l need to develop a plan to help you heal those old credit and financial wounds. If you a ren’t su re how to setup a plan for yourself, then get professional help. There are plenty of free counseling programs on financia l planning; you just have to look for them. Commit to completing you r pla n… Onc e you develop a plan then stick to it. Neighbor 2 Neighbor JANICE MINTON-KUTZ

FRIENDS OF FRANK HOST HAWAIIAN PARTY: Despite the cold weather, warm hearts turned out for Thornton Township Supervisor and Thornton Democratic Township Committeeman Frank Zuccarelli, Saturday March 15, 2014. Party goers were asked to come in Hawaiian attire and many did, wearing floral shirts under heavy winter coats. As always, when Frank throws a party, the faithful turn out in droves.”The “Mighty Thornton Township,” as Governor Quinn calls it, is the second largest in Cook County and the most active and successful according to insiders and outsiders alike. Attendees filled the American Legion Post 330 in Calumet City and listened as candidates eager for a chance to outline their programs, stood in the spotlight with a microphone. Candidates for various offices were there and many, many judicial candidates. This was a Democratic crowd so the sample ballot passed out was led by Governor Pat Quinn/Paul Vallas; Democratic State Central Committeeman, 2nd District Al Riley; State Representative of the 29th District Thaddeus Jones, (who is also a Calumet City Alderman) and so on. Neighbor 2 Neighbor had a sit down chat with one of the judges, Alfred M. Swanson, who is a judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County who is seeking to fill the Arnold vacancy. He is super qualified and endorsed by all the Bar Associations and he works in an area very close to this Realtor/Reporter’s interest, foreclosures. When asked if he goes easy on those suffering and enduring foreclosures, he notes: “I try to be fair and objective in all my cases, foreclosures and other civil matters. It’s the only way to be.” In his 60’s, tall, white haired and dignified, Judge Swanson has an almost ‘out of central casting’ appearance, as though he should be on “Law and Order” or other such popular television series. Swanson allows as he does not have time to watch much television but said that the ‘original’ “Law and Order” was close to the real thing. Pictured here Judge Swanson with Shopper Publisher Arlo Kallemeyn; Arlo and Brenda Kallemeyn with Frank Zuccarelli and Calumet City 2nd Ward Alderman Leni Wosczynski along with siblings Ron and Romayne Badyniak. *** LANSING VETERANS MEMORIAL C E R E M O N I A L H O N O R G UA R D S ANNUAL APPRECIATION DINNER: Set for Saturday March 29th, 2014 at 7 p.m. Festivities take place at the Calumet City Post 1841 ,664 Hirsch Street, Calumet City, Il This year the organization will celebrate their 22nd year as an organized honor guard and will present an award to an individual for his or her support during their 2013 campaign. Also recognized that evening will be one their own HG members who will be presented with

one of the coveted FUBA helmets. This is a play on words for the decorated steel pot helmets worn during the Vietnam War. The guard decorated them in every fashion and they are truly ‘works of art.’ Special invitations are going out to all members and friends and those with the FUBA helmets are asked to bring them to the party. The gentlemen did their homework on Chicago’s transportation, railroad, port, and highway systems. How they meet and converge here and offer unparalleled opportunity for business and industry to thrive especially on the southeast side which has fallen on harsh times. Through the looking glass, linking technology, the transportation systems, the availability of over 1,000 acres of underdeveloped land and a citizenry eager for change, the dynamics are here and the future is NOW. Google the Sun Times and the date and lead CHICAGO CAN HAVE A MANUFACTURING FUTURE and you should be able to find the story. Lansing Cleaners Takes Care of Your Gown In February, Tom and Sandy Ustanik, owners of Lansing Cleaners attended the annual Association of Wedding Gown Specialists conference in Coral Cables, Florida. There they met with multiple owners and operators of dry cleaning facilities along with the staff of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists, Tom was also mentioned as a new added member of the Board of Directors. As a family owned and operated business since 1946 Lansing Cleaners takes pride in being a part of this worldwide group and are eager to continue to bring proper wedding gown care to the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana area. Lansing Cleaners wants to educate and stress how important Wedding gown care is for all present and past brides. Gowns are being re-worn, re-sold, handed down as an heirloom or even being transformed into sentimental items such as baptismal gowns, communion gowns or bridal accessories for a future bride to be. If the gown is not treated after being worn, stains that are not presently seen will start to show and a yellowing will occur to the gown. This makes it very hard to clean the gown later on and could prevent further use of the gown. Proper wedding gown care is as follows: Once the gown

has been worn there are body oils, hair sprays, perfumes, sugars and other natural substances that will break down or yellow the fibers over time. The only way to properly remove these substances is to get the gown properly dry cleaned by a professional dry cleaner. Simply putting your dress in a “preservation box” will not keep your gown from being damaged over time. When Lansing Cleaners receives a gown to be cleaned they follow a sequence of steps that are carefully dictated so that the gown comes out in the best possible condition. First the gown is taken in by a customer service representative; there it is carefully inspected for any tears, stains, loose beading or anything else that needs to be documented. From there, the gown is taken to cleaning. Before the gown is cleaned the care label is read and the proper cleaning process is determined. The gown is then carefully cleaned by a specialist, tears and lose beading are repaired and then it is again inspected. If the gown passes inspection it will then be pressed. Lansing Cleaners takes pride in having a professional presser with 20+ years of experience under their belt who specializes in pressing wedding gowns, silks and formal wear. Once the gown is pressed, it is then inspected again and sent to be preserved.

Using only materials approved by the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists the gown is placed into an heirloom box with acid free tissue. The box has a viewing window and the gown is displayed beautifully for the bride to be able to show off her gown for years to come. Lansing Cleaners is also happy to announce that they are also doing “pre wedding day” care. They have recently taken on a professional seamstress who specializes in formal and wedding gown alterations and repairs. If interested in these services, please call 708-474-2459 for an appointment. They also do professional steaming and pressing of the gown and accessories before they are worn on the wedding day. Wedding gowns are the staple accessory when it comes to your wedding day. Make sure you are able to cherish your day for years to come and get your gown properly cleaned and preserved. Lansing Cleaners will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have about this process. Stop by their website lansingcleaners.com to submit any inquiries. KEVIN BRADLEY Finding your passion, knowing what you want to do, and doing what you love can be a long way from making a living at it. How many people love golfing? How many people love w atch i ng spor t s ? How many love singing? How ma ny people love working out? How many people love cooking? How many of the people who love doing these things can make a living at them? Only a small percentage of these people actually make a living following their passion. Does that mean they should quit? Not at all…doing what you enjoy is not always about the money. It is also about personal satisfaction. If you are really committed, you ca n f i nd a way to make a living in the field of you r d rea ms, a lbeit it may not be ex ac t ly your ideal, you will still attain a level of personal sat isfact ion t h roug h association. His deepest satisfaction is achieved when others experience enjoy ment f rom h is babies…the creations of his mind. Whatever your passion may be, developing a n i ncome f rom it may not be ex ac t ly a s you or ig i na l ly i mag i ned. Keep imag ining. There is more t ha n one way to eat a pea nut but ter cup.
