THE ALL-NEW
2016 CHEVY CAMARO!
Paw Palace opened its door to the public on September 5, 2014. The news quickly spread throughout local towns that our new boarding, daycare, training and grooming facility had opened. As time went on, a stray dog was brought in to us to see if we can help. Of course, we would not turn our back on a dog in need of help. His microchip’s information was a Pekingese named Cisco from Harvey, Illinois. We called the phone number attached and the residence claimed they didn’t know a dog named Cisco. So we started looking for a home by hosting Cisco at Paw Palace’s front counter. This was the start of what became 4 Paw Sake Rescue. Other than stray dogs brought to us, 4 Paw Sake also takes in certain surrender cases. Understandably, there are many situations that may cause you to consider surrendering your dog. However, there are resources that are available to you so that you can resolve what might seem to be a difficult situation. These include training, food assistance, low cost veterinarian care, and more. Give us a call to discuss your dog’s situation, to get some advice, and/or to get more information about surrendering your dog. To secure the resources necessary to care for our rescue dogs, a Spaghetti Dinner catered by Glenwood Oaks is planned for April 1, 2016. This event will be held at Southland Center Sports and Expo Center at 19825 Stoney Island Avenue in Lynwood, IL. Vendors and other rescue groups will also be present for your enjoyment as well as games of Bingo. The event will run from 5pm to 9pm. For the safety of all attending, we ask that you do not bring your personal pet. For questions, please call 708-758-3647. We hope to see you all there!!!

WOODROW WILCOX I n t he la st week of Febr ua r y 2016, a client brought me a copy of a revised bill that showed a ba la nce of zero. The client is from Saint John, Indiana. A few week s before this, he sat in my office whi le I rev iewed a bi l l a nd made phone ca l ls for him. I typed a letter to the medical biller to explain why the bill was wrong under the rules of Medicare. T he cl ient was ver y happy that the bill was eliminated. The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agenc y d ist ing u ishes
itself by helping clients with such medical billing problems with charging our clients for this extra value added service. Does you r insu ra nce agenc y g ive t h is h ig h level of service to its senior citizen clients? If not, why not? Note : Woodrow Wi lcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care I n su r a nc e S er v ic e s i n Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over one million dollars by fighting medical bill mistakes and f raud i n t he Med ica re system. DOM? W hat is DOM in real estate and what does it mea n ? Sooner or later prospective buyers and sellers come across the abbrev iat ion DOM a nd ask what is hiding behind t his rea l estate ja rgon. The short answer is: DOM sta nds for days on t he market and indicates the number of days a property has been on the market for sale. The DOM of a listing w ill start accumulating from the day it is entered i n t he mu lt iple l ist i ng service (MLS) and it will continue to add up until the property goes under contract. There are a lot of properties on the market that just sit and sit and sit…a nd c on s e quent l y accumu late quite a nu mber of DOM. Then there are those properties that as soon as they are listed, get showings and of f e r s…a nd t h e D OM are short. How useful is days on the market data? The DOM is a very useful tool to demonst rate to sellers the disadvantage of overpricing. By simply lo ok i ng at t he l i st i ng histor y of a property, it will often provide a case t hat t he home cou ld have sold sooner if it had been priced right. A lso w h a t a b out a l l t h o s e price reductions before it f i na l ly got a n of fer? Could it even have sold for a higher price if the initial list price had been in line with the market right from the beginning? Many buyers today want
to know the total DOM of a home before they make an offer. W hy? Because they are trying to gauge the motivations of a seller a nd “how desperate” a sel ler m ig ht be by t he number of days on market. Recently I listed a home that went under contract a f ter on ly si x days. Although delighted, this caught my seller a little bit by surprise especially since anot her home on her block had been on t he ma rket for a long t ime w it hout receiv ing an offer. I explained to her t hat her home sa le w a s d i f ferent . A l l t he cond it ions i nclud i ng pr ici ng, cond it ion of the home, timing of the market and the marketing itself, were right. Then I pointed out the fact that the shorter time on the market also meant relief f rom t he ex penses for u p k e e p, m a i nt e n a n c e and propert y ta xes. My seller was very happy as she was looking forward to her quick closing with renewed confidence. Hammer Toes Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Urgency or Emergency? How to pick where to go for medical attention
ANNA M. CAISON I remember years ago many churches, for Good Fr iday Ser v ices, d id m i n i preaching presentations on the last 7 sayings of Christ. The forth saying, “My God, my God why hast thou forsaken me ? ” was a lways ex pla i ned as God turning His face from His Son because a Holy God can’t look at sin. It isn’t impossible for God to look on sin, He sees our sin every day. From Adam and Eve’s rebellion, to their son’s act of murder and down through the ages God has looked on man’s sin. This is why He came to offer Himself in our place to redeem us from our sins. It isn’t that God can’t look on sin; it’s that sin prevents fellowship with God. In that moment that Jesus became sin for us, fellowship with the Father was broken. “My God, my God why hast t hou forsaken me? ” goes beyond the break in fellowship; it speaks of His internal agony on the cross as He bore not only our sins but the sins of the entire world; past, present and future. He became our filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). All of our perverseness, wickedness, rebellion and iniquity fell on Him (Isaiah 53:5). He became dirty and unclean with our sins. So agonizing was this experience for a holy and sinless
God that the weight of our sins was more torturous than the nails that pierced His hands and feet; more excruciating than the spear that pierced His side. I believe His divinity was in intense conflict with His humanity when He became sin for us. Uttering those words confirmed He had paid the price for our sin. In grasping this truth, I began to search myself, looking for signs that I too shared in Christ’s suffering to rid my life of sin. For the proof that we are partakers of His divine nature is seen in our own internal conflict between the indwelling spirit of God and our old sinful nature. There should be in each of us a groaning and painful longing for our bodies to be transformed from its present sinful condition (Romans 8:21-23). II Corinthians 13:5 instructs us to examine (scrutinize) ourselves to make sure that Christ is being formed in us. I want to know (by experience) that the resurrection power of Christ is at work in me (Philippians 3:10). For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

(Family Features) W hen unexpected health mishaps arise, many people’s first reaction is to head to an emergency room. But when those illnesses and injuries aren’t true emergencies, not knowing the best option for care can end up costing both time and money. So how can you know where to go when medical attention is needed? Urgency or emergency? Urgent care centers provide a way to keep up with patients’ daily healthcare needs, ser v ing as a v ita l link bet ween the emergency room and primar y care physicians. “Urgent ca re is g row ing across t he country because it provides patients with an alternative to the emergency room, which can be too costly and time-consuming for situations like common illnesses and minor injuries,” said Dr. Robert Kimball, president of the board of directors, Urgent Care Association of A merica (UC AOA). “W hile ERs are best equipped to handle life-threatening illnesses and injuries, it’s important that patients are aware that there are more affordable options available for less serious situations.” Due to shorter wait times - 90 percent of urgent care centers offer a wait time of 30 minutes or less, according to the 2015 UCAOA Benchmarking Survey - and much lower prices, urgent care centers are a more convenient and affordable option than, but not a substitute for, an emergency room. When care is needed for true emergency situations, such as heart attacks, strokes, major bleeding or severe burns, it’s vital to go to an emergency room immediately, as urgent care centers are not equipped or designed to treat life- or limb-threatening conditions. Wanted: Person to unplug pipes and or sinks. 219-7303370 Wanted: Good home for a Wurlizer white multi-key organ. Free looking for a Nursing home etc. 219-7303370

Understanding the options “The rise of free-standing emergency rooms is especially concerning because they look like urgent care centers. While they may seem convenient at the time, the emergency room prices can cause sticker shock for patients who aren’t aware of the distinction,” Kimball said. Free-standing emergency rooms are not physically connected to a hospital and are located in areas similar to urgent care centers, so it can be easy to confuse the two. A free-standing emergency room will offer emergency care - and charge emergency room prices. Patients should be sure to confirm the type of facility they’re visiting, as treatment at a free-standing ER may cost thousands of dollars more than an urgent care center. Dollars and sense When patients visit an emergency room for a non-emergency, they risk incurring a substantial financial loss. Emergency rooms are more expensive, charging an average of $1,300 for treatment of non-life-threatening situations, while urgent care centers charge an average of just $150, according to a Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. Plu s, 27 percent of a l l emergenc y room visits could take place at an urgent care center, which would save American consu mers approx i mately $4.4 bi l l ion annually, according to “Health Affairs.” Additionally, many insurance plans feature lower co-pays for urgent care services than treatment in an emergency room.

SSC 2015 Scriblerian Wins The South Suburban College literary and art magazine The Scriblerian, has won “Most Outstanding Community College Literary/ Art Magazine for 2015” from the American Scholastic Press Association and also a “First Place with Special Merit” award. Rick Jones, sponsor to the student organization the New Scriblerus Society for the past twenty-four years, said, “This is quite an honor and one we were surprised to receive. We have won First Place with Special Merit before but never this high honor of being the best in the entire United States. It shows that we are publishing an incredible product of the best in our students’ writing and artwork.” When the editor, Tyler Arnold, was informed, she exclaimed, “Awesome!” Jones said Arnold has been one of the best editors he has ever had the pleasure to work with on the magazine and that she had done outstanding editing for the past three issues of the magazine. “I have a new editor, Adam Witt, this year. He won our English department’s English Student of the Year award last May and is also an incredibly talented short story writer.”
The A mer ica n Scholast ic Press Association notified the college in a letter which stated, “Your magazine shows the superior efforts of talented and creative editors, w riters, artists, layout/graphic designers, staff members and adv isors. Creat i ng t he maga z i ne suppor t s a community of young writers and gives them esteem.” Jones said he really liked the final commentary that praised the magazine: “The Scriblerian is an excellent publication! Not on ly have you mastered t he basic elements of a good magazine, but you have also published excellent works from your school’s population. Scriblerian is a model for those up-and-coming magazines and an inspiration for those magazines that haven’t quite aced the necessary skills.” The 2015 edition of the maga zine is available in the SSC English Department and library. The inspector seems to be “playing ball” with the agent and the buyer, rather than simply reporting what he sees. Isn’t he supposed to be impartial in his findings?

Answer: The conversation you overheard between the inspector and the buyer’s agent has a suspicious ring, but it may or may not be as bad as it seems, depending on t he deta i ls. For ex a mple, i f t he buyer wanted the inspector to inf late the severity of defects in his report, or if the inspector was being persuaded to repor t nonex istent defec t s, t hat would definitely involve unethical and fraudulent practices, calling for some form of legal recourse. On the other hand, buyers sometimes notice defects that are missed by their inspector, such as water stains in a closet or a cracked window. In such cases, it would be reasonable for a

buyer to want those defects added to the inspector’s report. Another example might be a safety violation where the inspector noted the defect but did not specify that safety was involved. In those cases, a buyer might request that the inspector use the word “safety” in the inspection report. Then it would be reasonable to “change the report to what the buyer wanted.” Home inspectors should definitely be impartial in their findings. They should disclose what is true and observable. In your case, it would be reasonable to express your concerns to the agents and brokers in the transaction, as well as to the inspector, and to insist on an explanation of the conversation that you overheard.

T he pl ay del v e s i nto te en a ge depre s sion a nd w a s w r it ten la st su m mer by Isabel in t he creat ive writing program at the Interlochen Center for The Arts in Michigan where it garnered high acclaim. “Mental” will be staged April 1-3 at the Towle Theater, 5205 Hohman Avenue, Hammond. The play follows the friendship of seven year old Joanna and nine year old Warren. Jo suffers from depression. Her illness takes on the persona of a demon character named X. Warren has obsessive compulsive disorder. Playgoers will follow their friendship to age 17 for Jo and age 19 for Warren during their ten year embodiment of mental health conditions. teen suicide. Because of the stigma often attached to mental health issues, she relates that teens often suffer in silence, feeling they are going crazy and that there is no help. Her message is that depressed teens are not alone and there is a support network available to help. She hopes that people will learn from Jo’s mistakes. Towle Ma nag i ng Di rector, Jef f Ca se y, bec a me aw a re of Isabel’s work last summer but reports she was reluctant to contribute her work to TYTE. “She agreed last fall with an understanding that if the work was not ready for staging in front of an audience, we would wait for further rev ision,” Casey stated. “A f ter t he first reading it became very clear that “Mental” was ready for production.” Isabel, a senior at Munster High School, has been a member of the TYTE since the Fall of 2014. In prior years, she has served as assistant director and stage manager for TYTE productions. The daughter of Dr. Barbara Terpstra and Dr. Henry Zuniga, she is active in

W hile ra n k i ng h ig h on t he l ist of t r u ly obscu re celebrations, this “Month” can still teach us a few things – especially if we think about “umbrellas” that can help us protect our financial goals. C on sider t he se ke y areas: • Yo u r v u l n e r a b i l i t y to emergencies – It’s a good idea to ma i nta i n a n emergency f und containing t hree to si x months’ worth of living expenses. Without such a f u nd, you may need to d ip i nto you r longterm investments to pay for u nex pected ly la rge expenses such as a new furnace or a big bill from t he doc tor. Keep you r e m e r g e nc y f u nd i n a liquid, low-risk account. • Your family’s financial situation – If something happened to you, how would your loved ones be affected? Would they be able to stay in your house? Cou ld you r ch i ld ren eventually go to college? Wou ld you r su r v iv i ng spouse have enoug h r e t i r ement i nc ome t o maintain the lifestyle he or she has env isioned? Hav i ng adequate l i fe insurance in place can help ensure that all your hopes and plans don’t fall apart upon your passing. Di f ferent t y pes of l i fe insurance offer different feat u res. For ex a mple, “ t e r m” i n s u r a n c e , a s it s n a me s u g ge s t s , i s desig ned to prov ide a death benefit for a certain number of years. On the other hand, “permanent” insurance, such as whole life or universa l life, can be kept in force indefinitely. — If an illness or injury keeps you out of work, even for a litt le whi le, the loss of income could d i s r upt y ou r f a m i l y ’s abi lit y to pay its bi l ls, leading to potentially big problems down the road. Your employer may offer some t y pe of disabilit y insurance as an employee benefit, but the coverage may be insufficient. So you may want to consider purchasing an individual disability policy. • You r a bi l it y to l i v e independently – If you’re fortunate, you may never need to spend time in a nursing home or require any other t y pe of longterm care. But no one can predict the future – and it pays to be prepared, because long-term care costs can be catastrophic. A financial professional c a n help you f i nd a n appropriate way of paying for these types of costs. • Your capacity to protect y ou r big ge s t a s s e t s – It’s i mpor ta nt to have sufficient insurance for your major assets, such as your home, car, boat and so on. • Yo u r e x p o s u r e t o property loss or liability – You may someday face c os t s a s s o c i ate d w it h repa i r i ng or replaci ng your home, auto or boat, or even liability-related ex penses. Add it iona l l iabi l it y i nsu ra nce – known as an “umbrella” policy –is designed to kick in when your sta nda rd coverage on other policies has been exhausted. It ’s a l w ay s w i s e to be prepa red for t he proverbia l “ra iny day.” So have your umbrellas ready. J O H N G A R D E N CLUB MEMBERS: The iconic Teibel’s Restaurant in Scherer v ille was t he setting Saturday, March 12th, 2016 for the long anticipated and totally sold out appearance of Swain, Dan Heims and Joe Lami’l. But it was Swain that the glamorous and Master Gardener types swooned over that afternoon. The bearded high energy Swain paced the side of the large meeting room from side to side extolling the virtues of gardening all the while changing the various photos to fit his comments. He spoke of the wonders of a great compost heap and of studding t hat verdant lawn of ours with patches of flowers or vegetables--the better to attract bees to pollinate and keep a more sustainable
pla net. He reca l led t he h istor y of “Victor y Garden” as an offshoot of “This Old House” that was on PBS for 32 years. He suggested learning about new and different vegetables and joining a farmer’s market for fresh produce. “We should eat what grows in our area. It’s good for the community and good for us. Growing vegetables at the White House? It started with “Eleanore Roosevelt a nd fast for wa rd to t he present with Michelle Obama, but not much in between.” Swain is a veritable font of earthy information adding that there are “life’s lessons in store for gardeners.” The attentive crowd agreed with him. Swain is truly a rock star of gardeners! Bravo to the St. John Garden club and their Spring For ward 2016 tableau of gardening greats! *** HOUSE HOL D H A Z A R D OUS A N D ELECTRONIC WASTE COLLECTION: Set for Saturday April 2, 2016 from 8 :30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 11111-13 S. In the more formal yesteryear all the women wore hats, the fussier the better and everyone dressed in their Sunday (not to mention Easter) best for church or brunch or however we spent the holiday-- replete with the Easter Bunny and Easter egg hunts on the lawn. Nowadays it is much less formal and everything is more casual and laid back--but the message is the same. “He Is Risen.” Easter Blessings to All!
