Calumet City Native Serves with Naval Beach Group TWO by Navy Office of Community Outreach Public Affairs A 2009 Thornton Fractional North High School High School graduate and Calumet City, Illinois native is serving in the U.S. Navy with Naval Beach Group TWO (NBG 2). Petty Officer 2nd Class Bianca Urbina is an engineman with the beach group operating out of Virginia Beach, Virginia. A Navy engineman is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the diesel engines and auxilliary equipment onboard. “It is very different from anything I have previously done” said Urbina. “It is pretty cool that I have learned a lot that I can use in my personal life.” Commissioned in 1948, NBG 2 is designed to organize, man, train and equip forces to execute, combat support, and combat service support missions. NBG 2 is made of four commands, Assault Craft Unit TWO (ACU 2), Assault Craft Unit FOUR (ACU 4), Amphibious Construction Battalion TWO (PHIBCB 2), and Beach Master Unit TWO (BMU 2); who have their own individual missions that assist to ensure the overall mission of NBG 2 is complete. Urbina serves with ACU 2 who operate the Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) and provide combat ready craft that fully meet operational tasking worldwide, on time, every time. “I am able to work with a variety of different people and jobs,” said Urbina. “I am able to learn about every rate in our tight-knit community.”

Approximately 30 officers and 300 enlisted men and women make up the beach group. Their jobs are highly specialized and keep each part of the command running

smoot h ly. T he jobs ra nge f rom operat i ng boat s to maintaining engines and handling weaponry. “The Sailors here never cease to impress me with the effort they put into their daily work,” said Capt. Jeffrey Hayhurst, commodore comma nder of NBG 2. “Their dedication and hard work make me proud to be in command of Naval Beach Group Two.” Although NBG 2 is made up of four separate commands, t hey a l l work toget her to complete t heir mission of providing the Navy personnel and equipment to support an amphibious operation or exercise. These exercises can include evacuation of American citizens from a hostile territory, delivery of food and medical supplies after a natural disaster, the bulk delivery of fuel or fresh water from a ship anchored off the coast through a pipeline to a shore facility, and nearly any other task that involves moving from ships offshore to the beach. “I have become a lot more independent since joining the Navy,” said Urbina. “I have been able to travel to places I would never have imagined, so it’s been an amazing experience.” As a member of the one of the U.S. Navy’s most unique commands, Urbina and other NBG 2 Sailors understand that they need to have the ability to complete a variety of missions to help keep America safe from enemies foreign and domestic.

Spring Cleaning Season Could Give You A Fresh Start On Financial Security As spring sets in, many Americans will take time to organize closets, clean up cobwebs and dust in dark corners – but “spring cleaning” shouldn’t just be limited to your home. For about two thirds of Americans (67 percent) who confess their finances need cleaning, spring is also the time to take a fresh look at t hei r per s on a l f i n a nc e s, according to t he latest COUNTRY Financial Security Index®. This spring, COUNTRY Financial® found that the top personal finance project s for A mer ica ns, i n order, include: • cleaning up credit card debt • getting spending habits in check • establishing a plan to build up emergency fund savings “Spring can be the perfect time to clean out your closets, but it’s also an ideal time to consider organizing and refining your financial plan to set yourself up for success,” said Joe Bu h r ma n n, ma nager of f i na ncia l security at COUNTRY Financial.

millennials follow a budget, according to the survey, and one out of every t hree millennia ls has eit her never checked their credit report or does not know how to do so. For many in this generation, getting in the habit of tracking spending and monitoring debt can help overcome some of the most prominent financial hurdles. “One of the most important steps millennials can take is to create – and stick to – a household budget that will help them reach their future goals,” s a id Bu h r ma n n . “No mat ter t he amount of your assets, it’s important to monitor and protect what you have.” In the age of online banking and investing, it’s important to protect your financial information online as well. Despite being known for their tech savvy, nearly half (47 percent) of millennials admit to using the same or a similar password for their online financial accounts as they do on other internet sites, opening themselves up to hackers and identity theft.

Millennials must master the basics Millennials say spending habits, student loan debt and credit card debt are the biggest financial pain points they need to address. Taking basic steps to clean up your finances – such as creating and maintaining a budget as well as keeping tabs on your credit score – can be simple moves to make during this season of growth. believe their credit card debt needs to be cleaned up, which is five percent higher than the general population. As a result of the focus on credit card debt, members of Generation X keep close tabs on their credit report. Americans aged 35-49 are the most likely to have checked their credit report within the last six months (51%). Boomers and beyond: Approaching and living in retirement As older Americans build their nest egg and pay down debts to prepare for retirement, financial priorities shift once again. However, even as baby boomers and the oldest Americans approach and live in retirement, just half (51 percent) of those over age 50 know exactly how much debt they owe. Living on a budget is paramount d u r i n g t he f i n a l s t r e t c h b e f or e retirement and the transition to living on a fixed income for the rest of their lives. College Students Take Cultural Step Into Dance Students at Purdue University Calumet now have a new way to relieve stress and exercise their creativity while earning college credits. This spring semester, the university added a belly dancing class to their academic offerings. The studio that is usually used to produce The Calumet Roundtable is turned into a multicultural dance studio every Monday and Wednesday. The class is taught by associate professor Mary Beth O’Connor who has been studying belly dancing for over 13 years. O’Connor said that after studying, she wanted to share with the students something she deeply loves. “I felt it was time to share my passion with my students so that they could have the unique opportunity to learn about themselves and other cultures, as well as to experience the pure joy of dance,” O’Connor said. The class requires the students to learn at least one choreography while watching performances to identify dance and style. O’Connor said before beginning practice, the students dissect the language of the song and learn the meaning. “I wa nt t hem to have a good u nderst a nd i ng of movements, cu lture a nd rhy t hms of Midd le-Eastern Call The Plumber. The students of the class a re cu r rent ly pract icing for upcom ing per for ma nce opportunities including a dance to honor women’s history month. Christian Lutes, a graduate student at Purdue University

Ca lumet, t hought t he class would be a great way to exercise while researching cultural communication. Lutes said she believes the class helps with self-confidence and coordination. “It’s about women creating their own community,” Lutes said. Mi ra nda Peterson, a sen ior major i ng i n genera l communication, said she had practiced ballet for over 15 years and wanted to experiment with new types of dance. “It teaches you to have genera l confidence w ithin yourself,” Peterson said. “It teaches you to love your body.” Peterson said that many people were skeptical at the start of the class because they were unsure of how to appreciate their body while allowing themselves to dance. She said with the guidance from the professor and the camaraderie within the class, the dancers became more comfortable. O’Connor set objectives for the class that are meant to help students build self-confidence, learn about another culture and try new techniques. Once the students became interested, the work began. “When you’re interested, you’re alive,” O’Connor said.

We were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads. As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and somet i me s no br a ke s. Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread, rea l but ter a nd bacon. We dra nk KoolAid made with real white suga r. A nd, we weren’t overweight. WHY? Because we were always outside playing… that’s why! We would leave home in the morning and play a ll day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one wa s able to reach us a l l day. A nd, we were O.K. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We d id not h a v e Playstations, Nintendo’s and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 cha nnels, no cable, no v ideo mov ies or DV D’s, no su r rou nd-sou nd or C D’s, no c el l phone s, no personal computers, Apt. for rent: Calumet City, Lansing border 2 bdrm. 1st flr. no Internet and no chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our 10t h bir t hdays, made up games with sticks a nd ten n i s ba l l s a nd, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes. We r o d e b i k e s o r walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them. L itt le Leag ue had tryouts and not everyone made t he tea m. T hose who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! T hese generat ions have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem s ol v er s a nd i nv entor s ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before t he gover n ment regulated so much of our lives for our own good. Mabel sitting in her favorite chair. ___________________________________________

A warm place to sleep, a roof over your head, food to eat, people who care about you… what happens when tragedy strikes and all the things that are taken for granted are no longer there leaving you with nothing? These are the circumstances that 10 year-old Mabel, a toy poodle mix, found herself in. Mabel’s owner loved her very much. She and her owner were inseparable according to Kathleen Pazanin, secretary for Second Chance 4 Pets Network. Pazanin said the owner could frequently be seen carrying Mabel around. Mabel curled up in bed one night and when she woke up everything changed. That is when her happy life turned to misfortune. Mabel’s loving owner who had pampered and adored her had to be placed in a nursing home. Mabel had only known one owner in her life and now she found herself homeless and alone. Eventually, after some time, she found her way to the loving people at Second Chance 4 Pets Network. She is currently being loved and adored by her foster parent Marcia Autry. “When she first got here, she was very scared,” Autry said. “She would not walk down the stairs, she would just sit in the office chair all day.” Mabel is now doing better, she is becoming more comfortable with her surroundings. “Mable is very happy. She loves running up and down the stairs and chasing the other dog (Sadie),” Autry said. “She also likes to go for car rides, and she loves being held.” Mabel is a special needs dog. Since she is a mature older lady, she occasionally has an accident in the house. Sadly, she does not have the bladder control she used to. Mabel is currently up for adoption, those wanting more information about Mabel can contact JoAnn at (219) 771-6768 or Kathleen at (219) 730-7681 from Second Chance 4 Pets Network. Second Chance 4 Pets Network is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization animal rescue group. More information about Second Chance 4 Pets Network can be found on their website SC4Pets.org.

There is not a day that arises that a question does not surface, questions tend to dog our footsteps. We want to understand what is happening around us; perhaps we think if we understand what is happening, we will have a measure of control. “I’ve got this!” has become a popular phrase, one that ref lects our mindset and culture of today. Ye t , w h a t d o w e d o w i t h t h e u na nswered quest ions ? How do w e n a v i g at e t h r ou g h t he m a z e of uncertainties that often confuse, frustrate and bewilder us? How do we answer the questions that we cannot easily file away? I believe the answer lies in how we see God, how we were raised can skew our perception of Him. Maybe we view Him as a harsh taskmaster, someone we can never please. Perhaps, we see Him as unfair, detached or indifferent. Maybe we don’t even believe He exists. I see Him as a benevolent fat her with arms out-stretched, welcoming the wayward home. I see Him as the one who stood in the gap and would not let a “sinful woman,” be stoned to death. I see Him as the one who defied the cultural stigma of the day and conversed with a woman who was despised by those around her. She’d had more than one husband and currently

had a live in boyfriend. Yet, Jesus spoke openly with her. Jesus broke down all barriers of the day. He treated women with respect; He had a way of restoring the dignity that had been stripped away from them. He always gave a helping hand up and offered a new beginning. Jesus said that we could find rest in Him if we were tired or weary. Jesus also never shied away from the messy, scary questions, nor was He afraid of feelings. He understood Mar y and Martha’s pain at their brother’s untimely death. King David also poured out his pent up pain in the Psalms, yet in the end He was always encouraged, he always knew that God loved him and was with him despite his circumstances. Jesus once asked his disciples, ‘who do you say that I am?’ Who is Jesus to you? Maybe you are unsure, maybe you are asking that question right now, do you see Him as a teacher, friend or Savior? I believe He is all three. If you ask Him, He can make Himself real to you; He is big enough to handle your pain and confusion, or anything else you would like to share with Him. He is not detached or distant. He loves you very much, and cares about everything that makes up your world…

Random Reads BRANDI SMITS Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt How do you measure whether or not someone is smart? Ally thinks that she is smart. She is really good at puzzles and drawing. She makes mind movies about situations in order to see how situations will play out. Unfortunately Ally is really bad at words. She wants to be able to read, but the words won’t sit still long enough for her to figure them out. She’s become fa i rly adept at creating distractions when the time comes for her to read or write something. Unfortunately that usually results in a v isit to the principal’s office. Mr. Daniels steps in to f ill in for Mrs. Hunt as she has a baby a nd is qu ite d i f ferent f rom h i s pr e de c e s s or. For one t hing, he ca l ls his students his “Fantasticos.” Secondly, he doesn’t allow students to say un k ind t h i ngs to one a not her; somet h i ng t hat pa st teachers ignored. A lly’s classmate Shay and her sidekick Jessica are always saying mean things to the other students in the class, particularly Ally. When Mr. Daniels sets up a new a seating chart, A l ly i s plac ed nex t to Keisha. Keisha also doesn’t take guff from Shay and will stand up for herself. for sale: Large file cabinet $50; daybed $100; microwave cart balloon stuffer machine $200; rolltop desk $75; Barbies new $15. Ally decides that Keisha is pretty cool and a great friend to have. The two are assigned to a group with a boy named Albert who is super smart, but not very social. Soon the three are friends and Ally learns what it’s like to have someone in her corner. Mr. Daniels also notices that there is something a l it t le d i f ferent about Ally. He starts giving Ally projects that focus on her strengths. Ally soon learns that it’s ok if she learns t hings dif ferent ly t ha n the other kids in her class. Not h i ng i s i mpos sible once you know the best way to do it. A lly’s stor y may ring true to readers who have struggled with dyslexia or other learning challenges. Hunt easily connects the reader to A l ly a nd her struggles and it’s not long before you are cheering her on. Hunt’s classroom is comprised of a variety of d if ferent st udent a rchet y pes including the smart kid, the bully, the weird kid and more. Even if you can’t relate to Ally, Hunt makes sure to place the reader in the classroom as well. Finally, I have to g ive a shout out to teachers like Mr. Daniels who use alternate approaches to ma ke sure that no one gets left behind or singled out.

Opportunity Enterprises Hosts Another Record Breaking Gala

ANNA M. CAISON A nother Resurrection Sunday has come and gone. The props from the plays have been taken down, and the children’s speeches have been filed away till next year’s presentation. But if we look with our spiritual eye we will see the message of the gospel w ith all its drama and passion re-played every day of the year. And each of us (both Christian and nonChristian) plays a starring role in the ongoing saga. Some w i l l play t he role of Judas Iscariot (the pseudo-disciple), Pilate (the politically correct politician), and the Roman Soldiers (indifferent; just following orders). Many will play the role of the crowd who waved palm branches shout i ng “Hosa n na ! Hosa n na ! ” one day and a few days later cried “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” These players have no belief in t he risen Christ. W hen Christianity supports a cause that they can profit from they shout “Hosanna!” But when it exposes the true intentions of their heart they shout “Crucify Him!” The disciples, a mot ley g roup of men (and women) at various stages of growth will be played by new converts, the immature and the growing saints. Throughout t heir t ra ining t hey w i l l experience fear and courage, failures and successes, doubts and spurts of faith, but never betrayal in their pursuit to follow

Him. A larger cast w ill play the role of the Religious Leaders. They excel in theoretical knowledge of the scriptures but lack an experiential relationship with God. They confine Him to their selfconceived box of traditions and point of view. Anyone not lining up with their way of thinking is a threat to their agenda and must be discredited and removed from the congregation. And then there’s the role of Jesus. Every true believer who desires to please the Father will walk in His shoes. They’ll give up their evenings to share the gospel with those who’re thirsty for Jesus. They will give up their rights for the sake of the lost who need to see Jesus in them. They will joyfully partake in the sufferings of Christ, enjoying intimate fellowship with Him and the Father. God’s love and forgiveness is clearly seen in their life. What’s your role in the ongoing gospel story? Perhaps you’re like Barabbas— scheduled to die, but at the last minute received a stay of execution. Scripture doesn’t say what Barabbas did with his life after being released. What will you do with yours? For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing IL 60438.

Through video, the AmRheins shared their story of challenges and successes along the journey of having a child with special needs. Rick A mRhein stated, “Sue and I have been part of the OE family since our son Richie started receiving services in 2004. My wife and I have lived in many places around the country, and I know without a doubt that there is no other place quite like OE”. Richie has worked in OE’s Outsource Solut ions depa r t ment for 12 yea rs assembling products for local businesses. He and his roommate live in their own apartment supported by OE staff. Porter Regional Hospital and Strack and Van Til were top sponsors of the evening. False Promises MIKE BUDER He told me that I didn’t need to do any thing to get my home ready to list. 2. He said he would sel l it for a drast ica l ly reduced commission since I a m probably buy i ng something else as well. 3. He said that he could get me the amount that I want for the home and 4. He told me that he can sell it quick! I thanked her for the opportunity to meet with her and wished her well. No harm, no, foul, no worries…You can’t win them all. N o w, f a s t f o r w a r d to today (a yea r later). This house is still on the market, but was recently reduced to a price below my recommended price when we f irst met. Oh, and the new photos show the home de-cluttered a bit. I’m not always right… I’ve had some l ist i ngs that were a bit off pricing before I got it right. But, for the most part I have been spot on. Sellers, be careful when an agent tells you what you want to hear and promises you the moon! About a year ago I went on a listing appointment. The seller was referred to me by a past client of mine. I thought that would give me the edge against the other Realtor she was talking to…but it didn’t. The listing appointment it sel f w a s awe some ! I instantly felt comfortable with the client, and she felt comfortable with me because of a ll t he nice things my past client told her about me. She a lso said that she felt like she already knew me because she had be en read i ng my weekly column over t he past few mont hs. I toured the home and now it was time to get down to business. We sat down at the dining room table and I talked to her about my marketing plan, my bra nd a nd what I have to offer a seller over my compet itors. T hen I suggested that she needed to de-clutter just about every where, and repaint a couple of the bedrooms. She really didn’t like that idea. Then we talked price and she didn’t like that eit her. She was hoping for an amount that was approximately 25% higher than the current comps indicated. She t hanked me for coming a nd we parted ways. I was pretty sure that she wasn’t going to l ist w it h me…I wa s right. She emailed me the following morning: Sorry Mike, I’m going with the ot her Rea ltor a nd here are the reasons why…1.

might find some “stains” in the form of chronically underperforming i nvest ment s. Instead of holding on to t hese vehicles w it h t he hope that they will eventually turn around, you might c on sider sel l i ng t hem and using the proceeds to purchase new investments, which can help fill any gaps you may have in your holdings. • Consolidate your accounts. Specifically, if you have some stocks here, a couple of certificates of deposits t here, a nd some IRAs at still another place, you might consider consolidating them with one f i na ncia l ser v ices prov ider. With a ll your invest ments in one place, you could possibly reduce t he fees a nd pa p er w or k a s s o c i at e d w it h ma inta ining your accounts. And when you eventua lly sta rt ta k ing w it hdrawa ls from your IRA and 401(k), you’ll find it easier to calculate these requ i red d i st r ibut ion s if t hey’re coming from just one place. But just a s i mp or t a nt l y, w hen y ou c on s ol id a t e y ou r i nve st ment s w it h one provider, you may find it easier to follow a single, unif ied investment strategy.

Now that spring has of f ic ia l l y spr u ng , you might look around your home and decide it’s time for some sprucing up. You can also engage in a little “spring cleaning” in your investment portfolio. • “Dust of f ” your invest ment st rateg y. If you’ve left your investment strategy unexamined for a long period, it too may need to be “dusted off” and re-eva luated. Over time, your financial goals, family situation and even risk tolerance can change, so it’s a good idea to review y ou r ov e r a l l s t r a t e g y to ma ke su re it’s st i l l appropriate for your needs. • G et r id of “clut ter.” Once you start tidying up your house, you might be surprised at a ll t he “dupl ic ates” you f i nd. You may f ind t hat you have many versions of the same type of investment in your portfolio. If you ow n too ma ny of t he same investment, and a market downturn affects t h at pa r t ic u l a r a s s et , your portfolio could take a big hit. Diversify your holdings. (However, while diversification can reduce the impact of volatilit y on your portfolio, it can’t g ua ra ntee prof it s or protect against loss.) • Remove “stains” on your portfolio. As you clean your carpets and furniture, you might notice some stains that should be removed. A nd when you look through your portfolio, you

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My husband and I purchased a house from a co-worker a couple years ago. She told us to forego the inspection because the home, is not that old, and had, perhaps, only minor defects, and she would not consider a bid if we decided to get one. We had a major leak two winters ago. We then found out that a report had been made detailing implements necessary to fix the roof. Many repairs were not done. We called previous owners and the contractor. Everyone acted very surprised. The contractor paid for repairs and said it would never happen again. Our purchase agreement, by the way, has no “as is” clause and we did not get a disclosure statement as the owners said they thought everything was fine. This winter we did not have another leak, but we did have terrible ice on the roof. We sat down many times with the builder and first owner, and finally came to an agreement that they would pay for more insulation. They agreed to pay as long as they would then be off the hook. They have not paid yet and estimated repairs costs are well into five figures. What can we do?

Handyman: Spring clean up, landscape repair, tree planting, rock and mulch repair, painting, trim bushes, trees, gutter cleaning, fence repair, deck staining, other services. My prices won’t be beat. Please contact Frank. 708-975-1219

Answer: W hy would you buy a home where the seller will not accept an offer that requires a home inspection? This is another example of why buyers and sellers should use a Real estate professional when buying and selling a home. It doesn’t matter what a seller says about the condition of a property. A seller may not know about problems or defects. As a buyer you need to get an independent evaluation of condition. As to the various agreements which have been made, unless they result in promised repa irs a nd improvements they’re worthless. Stop handling this by yourself. Hire an attorney to get all obligations on paper and to assure that repairs are in place before the next freeze.

Handyman: Leaf cleanup, grass cutting, residential snow removal. L a n d s c a p e r e p a i r, painting, trim bushes, trees, gutter cleaning, deck staining/painting, moving service. Frank. 708-975-1219
