Have you ever stopped and rescued an animal f rom t he m idd le of a roadway? For some re a son t he s e a n i m a l s like to think they own a part of the road. I’ve seen deer on the Bishop Ford expressway, raccoons on Glenwood/Dyer Road and numerous possums on Torrence Ave. I see most of these 4-legged friends a f ter t he y have made their acquaintance with a 4-wheeled vehicle. Most times the vehicle wins. They can’t seem to get it through their heads that the road belongs to the ta xpayers who paid for it and they don’t really stand a fighting chance against a car or truck. Well, the other day while driving home, I stopped and rescued an animal from the middle of the road. Actually, it belongs to the invertebrate family of the animal kingdom, but I think they should be given the same right to life t hat ot her more attractive animals enjoy. After all if you saw a baby harp seal in the middle of t he road, wou ld n’t you stop and rescue it? I drove past this anima l before I recognized that it was still alive. I put my car in reverse and since it was raining I positioned my d r iver ’s door so I could reach out and grab it w it hout gett ing wet. After all, my dedication does not include getting soa ked. I g rabbed t his creature and then had to decide what to do with it. My empty coffee cup was

sitting on my console, so that’s where it went. W hen I got it home, I carefully transferred it to a nice home filled with potting soil bought from the Crete Ace Hardware. Maybe you guessed that this ‘animal rescue’ was in reality a nightcrawler – but not just a ny nightcrawler mind you. This amazing specimen was a full twelve inches long. I got some d i r t y looks from a seagull that was going to enjoy it for dinner. My wife said she was glad that this worm was on a side-street and not on southbound 394. Anyway, that’s my animal r e s c u e s t o r y. B e f o r e you think that I’m such a g re at hu ma n it a r ia n or wor m-ita r ia n so to speak, I should tell you my plans for my rescued nightcrawler. I’m going to v isit my favor ite fa rm pond in t he nex t few days and ta ke him s w i m m i ng. O f c ou r s e he w i l l be attached to a #8 Eagle Claw hook so he doesn’t d row n. My pla n s for my new pet include a bigmouth bass or catfish swimming by to see how he tastes. I hope that he appreciates me helping him reach his full potential. I hope he thinks that being eaten by a largemouth bass is nobler that being eaten by a seagull. I certainly do. Thanks for reading our newspaper. South Suburban College STAR Awards The outstanding accomplishments of two special women were recently honored by South Suburban College a t it s a n nu a l C h ic a go Wome n’s Conference & Expo. The STAR Awards were created to honor those who have and continue to make a difference and inspire others to do the same. Oak Forest resident Janice Crowe w a s honore d a s a n out st a nd i ng South Suburban College (Thornton Junior College) alumna. This award recognizes the achievements of a South Suburban College fema le graduate (whether from the past or recent) for her achievements in her profession/ c a r e e r, v o l u n t e e r i s m o r o t h e r outstanding life achievement. For Crowe the road to success began with adversity. She always dreamed of becoming a nurse but due to a hearing impairment she was turned down by many schools. Crowe refused to give up. She completed her prerequisites at SSC (formerly Thornton Community College) and was accepted into the nursing program. She graduated in 1972 and became a charge nurse at Oak Forest Hospital. Crowe helped open and lead the HIV Unit at the hospital. Throughout her career she has inspired and encouraged new nurses and those considering a nursing career. Crowe is known for her dedication, leadership,

and willingness to embrace change. She is described as an extremely down to earth person who has been an angel of mercy for her family and extended family. In addition she is also a professional genealogist and loves coaching others so that they too can achieve their goals. The second award recognizes women who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in business, community and/or education. These women are leaders in promoting and supporting health and wellness or personal and professiona l development. In t he nominator’s eyes, the “STAR” is a role model because she is achieving her

goals and through her inspiring actions has profoundly motivated others to do the same. The recipient Bridgett Annicks is a 1st grade teacher at Oak Glen School in Lansing who was honored as an outstanding model educator dedicated to the success of her students. She is described as ex tremely patient, passionate and enthusiastic. She is also a Zumba instructor and has taught after school aerobics for parents and students. About 9 years ago, she noticed that a student in her class was limping and told his parents. She later learned that he had leukemia. Annicks went above and beyond by tutoring this student at home when he was unable to attend school. She also planned a fundraiser at the school and used the money to buy an iPad so that she could put his lessons on it and help him while he was hospitalized. As the cancer progressed, A n n ick s orga n i z ed a z u mbat hon f undra iser, which brought in over $10,000 to send the boy and his family on a trip to Disneyworld. This is the second year that the STAR Award has been presented. The award was added to the Chicago Women’s Conference because it fits well with the conference’s mission to support and encourage women.

Neuromas

0% APR For 60 Months**

Neuromas are a scarring of a sheath surrounding the nerve. They usually occur between the 3rd and 4th toes but can be found elsewhere as well. Symptoms include feeling a click in the ball of the foot, or electrical shocks shooting to the ends of the affected toes. Surgery is nearly always needed to alleviate the symptoms although injections, padding or physical therapy can help. IN THIS MARKET THE RIGHT AGENT CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!

When he draws and paints, Bishop Noll senior Antonio Magaña said he feels like he is in his own world where he can express himself through his artwork. Those talents earned him first-place honors during the annual juried high school art exhibit held earlier this month at Calumet College of St. Joseph. Magaña, of Calumet City and a St. Casimir Catholic School alum, won best in show for his graphite on paper piece. He described the subject matter as first perspective of a person lying on the ground with an arm toward the camera. The piece took him about a month to complete using only pencil. Noll art teacher Michael Carioto said

Magaña is a hard working student. “He dedicates his time wisely each day and asks engaging and smart questions. With his work, he is focusing on expanding his skills. Focused line work, deliberate value, and use of defining shapes is what made his work in the gallery stand out.” Magaña appreciates the support from Carioto, art classmates, friends and family and would love to continue to explore his talent as a hobby while he pursues a college degree in criminal justice. “I hope that Antonio continues in art in some facet, because he is very talented and has a great eye for what can make a piece dynamic,” Carioto said.

Girls on the Run Celebrates with Soiree Guests filed in the Wicker Park Social Center with smiles on their faces and gym shoes on their feet. The border of the room displayed tables filled with a variety of raffle prizes. “Gi rls on t he Ru n of Nor t hwest Indiana is thrilled to be the recipient of 1,200 pairs of high quality running shoes to suppor t t he g i rls i n ou r program this year,” said development director, Lauren Lauer. “The donation was made possible through the ASICS Extra Mile campaign, a multi-channel national brand campaign that resulted in the donation of over 50,000 pairs of running shoes to Girls on the Run programs across the country.” It was not long before music from the Chicago band, Spoken Four, had everyone on the dance floor dancing to hit songs from the 80’s to today’s popular hits. The atmosphere and high energ y of the music, food and friendships reflected how far Girls on the Run of Northwest Indiana has come through the 10 years of dedication to inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. group of girls in 2008,” Schlueter-Kim said. “I remember waiting at the finish line. One of our girls that crossed looked fatigued. I asked how she felt a nd I t houg ht she wou ld respond saying she felt sick and exhausted. But she looked up at me and said proud. So tonight, that’s how I’m truly feeling, proud of how far we’ve all come.” The Sneaker Soiree is the primary fund raising event for Girl on the Run of Northwest Indiana. It benefits the organization’s ef forts to bring t he program to as many girls as possible and helps provide financial assistance to over 60% of program participants. As a non-profit serving over 2,000 girls annually across Northwest Indiana, GOTR of NWI relies on the support of the community. “We are thrilled by the amount raised at our inaugural Sneaker Soiree,” Lauer said. “The funds will make a big impact on our ability to continue to provide the program at a reasonable cost to girls from low income families in our community. Not only did we raise a lot of money for the charity, we established a unique, fun event for our supporters that we are looking forward to growing in the future years.”

Thornton Township Women of Honor During its 9t h A nnua l Women of Honor Br unch in celebration of Women’s History Month Thornton Township honored the accomplishments of five outstanding women. Sponsored by the township’s Human Relations Commission this year they presented awards to Illinois State Comptroller Susana Mendoza, Channel 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Evelyn Holmes, District 149 Board Vice President Lolita C. Crisler-Liggons, Calumet City Clerk Nyota Figgs and Volunteer Mary Jo Loggins. “While they are all in different professions, their common bond is service,” said Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli. “They work every day in the community to provide support and a personal touch to those who need help. Serving the public has its challenges, but the challenges never outweigh the reward.” Figgs is the first African-American woman elected to serve commissioner and president of the Calumet Memorial Park District. As city clerk she has streamlined services making the office more user friendly. Before she became city clerk Figgs worked as a probation officer for Cook County attempting to make change in her community. She established the Figgs Foundation Inc. to serve community issues. In accepting the award Figgs thanked her mother. “I would not be the woman I am today without my mom,” she said. She also thanked her mentors, colleagues and those who supported her through the years. “You raised me to be the public servant I am.” Dolton resident Mary Jo Loggins worked at the Wrigley Company for 41 years in sales and marketing. As a volunteer Loggins helped develop a mentoring program for Chicago Public School students, has been a Girl Scout volunteer/ Small whitewood cabinet for bathroom or kitchen, 22” x 27” x 7”, $25. 708-481-6907 Large over the dresser mirror $15; ornamental wall mirrors, $20-$30; new set of 4 chair cushions, $10. 708481-6907 R o c k i n g c h a i r, o a k , beautiful! $35. 708-756-0708 One pair of “Magnetic” mini blinds, 25x68, $25; chest of drawers, white wicker, $25. 708-756-0708

leader for more than 13 years and is a certified literacy tutor. In addition, she makes blankets for seniors and the sick and helps teach healthy cooking and eating through a group called Common Threads. Loggins said she was shocked about being honored. I don’t do anything and I can’t accept this award. My family said ‘yes you do and yes you are,’ and I deeply appreciate it,” she said. Lolita Crisler-Liggons serves as vice president of the District 149 Board of Education. She also serves as scholarship chairperson for the Southern Illinois University A”Ole Skool Committee” and youth leader with the Blu Knight, a Summer Olympics for youth with the Chicago Park District and is

She also commended Super visor Zuccarelli for his commitment to help the community. General assignment reporter for ABC Channel 7 Evelyn Holmes said she tries “to do the stories that represent the people I work for, and that is all of you.” Holmes began her career in radio before moving to television working for CLTV prior to joining Channel 7 in 2003. She also participates in numerous charity and community projects. “I am very humbled to receive this award. “As women we toil in the background sometimes and do what we are supposed to do or even what we don’t want to do because we are doing it for others,” said Holmes. “I see women out there every day who see an issue and are working to resolve it. I commend them.” Susana Mendoza was elected Illinois Comptroller in 2016. Prior to her election she served as Chicago City Clerk, and completed six terms in the Illinois House of Representatives. She earned the reputation of being a tenacious and effective legislator. Mendoza the daughter of immigrant parents, was the first Hispanic to ever run for and win a statewide office in Illinois as a Democrat. Mendoza t ha n ked t he tow nship for t he honor a nd commended the other honorees and women in attendance for their service. “I am committed to helping the most vulnerable people in the state. When setting priorities on who to pay first I will always chose them,” Mendoza said.

I’ve been asked if I thought Donald Trump was the anti-Christ. My answer is no, he is not. He lacks the intelligence and military genius that is distinctive of the man of sin. However, I do believe he is a pawn of Satan to set the stage for antiChrist’s coming. W hen I wa s a teenager, t he Yout h Ministry I was a part of, gave out a gospel booklet titled “The Beast.” It tells of the conditions of the world before, during and after the arrival of anti-Christ. When repor ts f irst sur faced about possible collusion of Trump and his team with the Russians I pulled out my old booklet. The booklet states (omitted in the updated version) that as we near the end times, Russia w ill successfully infiltrate our seminaries and neutralize the effects of the Gospel (although true, there’s no proof this is Russia’s doing) while pushing the acceptance of Russian agenda. The ability to do this, the booklet says is “because in actuality it (US) is not a Christian nation.” We see all this coming to play with the rise of Donald Trump. Besides his corrupt business dealings, godless lifestyle, and bigotry, his campaign has been full of adoration for Putin and his polices. His appoi nt ment s to h is ad m i n ist rat ion as well as those of his campaign and transition teams, former and current, have connections with Putin and/or the

MIKE BUDER W henever meeting w it h a sel ler du r i ng a listing appointment one of the many discussions is what the seller can do to bet ter prepa re t he home for sale. At times the home is very well staged and organized and will present itself per fect ly with nothing additional needed. More of ten a homeow ner ha s f i l led t he home’s space w it h f u r n it u re, col lectables and a plethora of personal item s. T h i s i s nor ma l for most of u s but it doesn’t a lways help in sel ling your home. My sug gest ion is si mple… t h i n k out f u r n ish i ngs, de-personalize and think as a minimalist. I mean you’re mov i ng a ny way right, so why not box it up now and store those items in the garage or off-site storage. I have at t i me s had sellers say, “this is still my home and until it sells my stuff stays just how it is”. While that is certainly t r ue, t he at t it ude a nd approach may cost you a leng t hy t i me on t he market or potentially less net funds. I have passed on some listings where the sellers were unwilling to heed this simple and sound advice. Sellers have expressed a buyer may not be able to see much

of the garage, while that too is t r ue most home buyers a re much more i nterested t he l iv i ng accom modat ion s t ha n the garage space. I am not discounting the garage at all just prioritizing it. As your Realtor, I would much rat her see boxes of stored items neat ly stacked in the garage than your stuf f f illing ever y nook and cranny of your home. I know the buyer would agree. I hear buyers comments…I know! I a m a homeow ner a s wel l w it h plent y of persona l items a round but before my home goes on the market for sale it w i l l be la rgely void of those items in order to show a mple space a nd light. The South Suburban College Legal Studies Department will host their fourth annual Law Day on Tuesday, May 2, 2017. This year’s event will feature a special live court case. Oral arguments for a real criminal First District Appellate Court case will be heard in the Performing Arts Center. This is a rare opportunity for the community to observe the First District at work at an off-site location. The general public– especially educators and students–is encouraged to attend this unique opportunity to witness some of the area’s most talented, professional litigators in action. Opening remarks will begin at 10:00 a.m. with doors opening at 9:30. Following the arguments, the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions of the Appellate Prosecutor and Appellate Defender. The justices will return to the PAC for another question and answer session at approximately 11:30 a.m. Attendees are welcome to stay for a Mock Crime Scene Demonstration from 12 noon–2:00 p.m. in the Atrium of the Main Campus, as well as a Court Reporting Demonstration from 12 noon–2:00 p.m., in the Heritage Room. This event also provides guests with an opportunity to find out more about educational and career opportunities in the judicial field, and to learn about SSC’s Paralegal, Court Reporting and Criminal Justice programs. For more information about Law Day, or to RSVP for the day’s events, please email jcieslik@ssc.edu or contact Jason M. Cieslik, J.D., Paralegal Coordinator, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2579. Hospitals Recognize The Gift Of Organ, Tissue Donation April is National Donate Life Month. The hospitals of Community Healthcare System, in partnership with Gift of Hope and the Indiana Lions Eye Bank, will recognize the gift of organ, eye and tissue donation with events and activities at its three area hospitals: Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. Each Community Healthcare System hospital will f ly the Donate Life flag for the entire month of April and will host a pinwheel display on site in recognition of each donor from the three hospitals during 2016. Fesko, FACHE, president and chief executive officer, Community Healthcare System. “We hope that by displaying the Donate Life flag and pinwheels that people will stop, take notice and take action to sign up to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. It’s one small way we can salute those who have given someone the most precious gift of all – the gift of life.” On Monday, April 3, St. Catherine Hospital acknowledged the start of Donate Life Month with a f lag-raising and pinwheel ceremony in the main lobby. On Tuesday, April 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the hospital will host a Donate Life registration table in the main lobby, 4321 Fir St. in East Chicago. “At the registration tables, hospital visitors and employees will be able to sign up for the Indiana Donor Registry and learn more about how donation works and why it is so important,” said Community Healthcare System’s Director of Bio-Ethics Jana Lacera. Community Healthcare System hospitals had a total of seven organ donors in 2016. The receiving transplant centers were able to transplant 13 lifesaving organs. Tissue donors totaled 46 for the same year. Potentially 188 individuals will receive the gift of sight from the 94 corneal donors. One organ, eye or tissue donor can save or enhance more than 75 lives. There are an estimated 119,000 people waiting for an organ right now, according to Donate Life America. Another person is added to the waiting list every 10 minutes. The hospitals of Community Healthcare System also offer expectant parents an opportunity to donate their babies’ amniotic fluid, umbilical cord, umbilical cord blood and placenta follow ing birth. These tissues, which would otherwise be discarded, contain non-embryonic stem cells that may be used for transplantation or research. Families choosing to donate these tissues receive a certificate of donation for their babies. To learn more about Community Healthcare System, its hospitals, physicians and services, visit comhs.org. Register your decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor, by visiting www.donatelifeindiana.org
