Feline Cases of Canine Flu Confirmed Test results have confirmed that four cats at Humane Society Calumet Area are positive for Canine Flu strain H2N3. Other cats were affected by similar symptoms, but recovered quickly before testing and tested negative. The feline infection is believed to be contained at HSCA because no infected cats have left the shelter. This is one of the first times the virus as “jumped” species in the U.S. and species jump is very rare. It is also the first documented case of infection in cats in the U.S. The cats experienced symptoms such as runny nose, congestion and general malaise, as well as lip smacking and excessive salivation. Humane Society Calumet Area will remain closed to the public until all dogs and cats have tested negative for H2N3. T here i s c u r rent l y no f lu v ac c i ne approve d or recommended for cats. The symptoms in HSCA’s cats were less severe than the dogs and they are recovering quicker. Cat owners are urged to contact their veterinarian if they notice any symptoms of illness. For more information about testing and canine flu, please contact University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program at uwsheltermedicine@vetmed.wisc.edu. For the most up-to-date information on HSCA’s closure, please visit www.hscalumet.org.

Hammer Toes Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Question: My teenage son will be working on a farm this summer, and naturally, I’m concerned about his safety. What programs are in place to help prevent farming accidents? Last year, Illinois led the nation in the number of farming workplace accidents which typically occur when working on or farmCon equipment, livestock attacks, through near Beat heavy n i k s on ke y i s g lad to have Ha m mond electrocution and suffocation in stage feed bins. Women’s Conference Provides Empowerment
Visitors to the Chicago Women’s Conference & Expo at South Suburban College check out a variety of vendors offering various services and products.
Caprice O’Bryant, owner of Excuse Free Fitness (right), answers a question during the Turning Passions Into Profit at the Chicago Women’s Conference & Expo. Pictured with her are panel members (L-R) Stephanie Walters, Angela Wiggins, and Starla Snead. ____________________________________________
New to the women’s conference this year was the Dress For Success Fashion Show. Models from the college show off the latest styles for casual, business, after five and formal attire. ___________________________________________________________
When she first started her business she said she was often giving free advice, a mistake many people who are starting out make. Starla Snead said her impetus to starting her own business was to be able to be a stay at home mom. She was always interested in calligraphy and engraving so she decided to pursue her interest to see if it could be turned into a business. St e ph a n ie Wa lt e r s , ow ne r of Blue Top Marketing said just because you have a passion for somet hing does not mea n you should turn it into a business. “You need customers to prove you have a good product so you can sustain a business,” she said. A sked why t he pa nelists de c ide d to c r e at e t hei r ow n business the reasons they listed were freedom, flexibility, to create, inspire, educate and help people. Before starting a business they advised saving money for startup, developing a good business plan,

Your House Stinks MIKE BUDER S or r y i f I of fende d y o u …b u t y o u r h o u s e stinks. Houses smell. Yep, every single one. Oh, they don’t all smell bad…but they all carry their own f rag ra nce. A f rag ra nce called the death of a sale if it stinks. Unfortunately, in the grand scheme of preparing a home for sale, house smells are the last t hing t hat sellers seem to think about. Probably because I have yet to meet a seller who smells their ow n st i n k y home. Not once has a seller said to me “I know my house smells b a d”. No m a t t e r h o w diplomatic an agent tries to be when listing a stinky house, telling a seller their home smells bad seems to offend them more than tel ling t hem t hat t heir home is worth less money than they thought. May be it ’s be c au s e when you l ive i n you r home you become immune to all the smells that “outsiders” definitely notice. This is why I feel that is it part of my job to be upfront and honest w it h sel lers about t he odor s t hat w i l l be a n obstacle to successfully ma rket i ng t hei r home. Please Mr. and Mrs. Seller, don’t shoot the messenger! Your Realtor is just trying to help you to get your house sold and a “house a’la stinky” is going to be a problem. Some of the most dead ly (yes, t hey For sale: 1999 Denali Truck. 58,000 miles original, fully loaded $5,500/obo. Extremely clean 4x4, Bluish green. 708-465-8544
could kill the sale of your home ) smel l s a r e t he obvious. The granddaddy of stink is cigarette or cigar smoke. The next would be the pet smells, especially t he c at l iter boxe s or mothballs. Then there are the subtle smells that can also be a buyer turn off such as dirty sheets and laundry, moldy smelling bathrooms, dirty diapers. Then there are the weird cooked food smells (by the way-never cook fish or cabbage while trying to sell your home), garbage cans (empty them every day). Overcompensating with to many air fresheners or candles can offend a sensitive nose and make your buyer wonder what you’re covering up. So…if you’re selling your home, go outside to clear your nasal passages, then step inside and take an i mpa r t ia l wh i f f or a sk someone you trust to do it for you. SSC Foundation Seeks Support For Fundraiser Gala Each year the South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) has an annual spring gala from which all proceeds benefit scholarship programs. The SSCF is now seeking support from local residents, friends and partners for Showcase 2016: Dreams & Destinations, to be held on April 29, 2016, at Glenwoodie Golf Club. With the cost of higher education on the rise and the level of state funding on the decline, students are finding it more and more difficult to afford a full-time college education. The SSC Foundation’s support is often critical for students to begin or continue their college education. Individuals and local businesses can support this mission while marketing themselves to approximately 300 guests through taxdeductible sponsorships and auction gifts. Tickets are also available for $125 each. This year, South Holland’s John “Doc” Magon will receive the 2016 SSC Foundation Cornerstone Award and a portion of the

Donations for this cause are fully tax deductible. Registrations and sponsorships can be made online from w w w.ssc.edu/ foundat ion. The Foundat ion Sta f f w i l l pick up donations for auction. The SSCF has now awarded over $1.6 million in scholarships si nce 1989. In 2015, over $10 0,0 0 0 i n scholarship funds were awarded to SSC students.

Speaking Of Seniors

Thank You Attorney General WOODROW WILCOX On March 22, 2016, a client delivered a letter to my office while I was at lunch. The letter was from the Attorney General of Indiana Greg Zoeller. It was good news for my client and me. The Consumer Protection Division of the attorney general’s office sent a copy of the letter it received from the firm against whom I helped my client file a complaint. The f ir m ack nowledged it’s mistake and cancelled the bill that it had repeatedly – and wrongfully – sent to our client. The client was quite glad that our agency stood with him to demand that he be treated fairly and that the bill be corrected or cancelled. I checked this file. My first polite letter to ask the medical biller to correct the mistake and fix the problem for this client was on December 7, 2015. I had investigated the matter a nd found t he mista ke that occurred. When that polite letter was ignored, I made multiple phone calls to try to get the name and fax number of the person at t he med ic a l bi l l i ng firm who was a manager over the medical billers. I wanted to send a fax with t he facts to t he person who could get the matter corrected and solved. My requests for the contact information were refused. So, I helped the client to f i le a c ompl a i nt . T he complaint got results. I don’t usua l ly help clients to file complaints. Usua l ly, I just w r ite a p ol it e le t t e r or m a k e a pol ite phone ca l l to alert a doctor, hospital, or la bor ator y a bout a medical bill error and the problem gets solved. Only
a few times have I resorted to complaints filed with g o v e r n m e nt of f i c i a l s . T he f i rst t i me I d id it was aga i nst a hospita l that ignored three polite letters from me on behalf of one of our clients. So, we f i le d a c ompla i nt . The federal officials who investigate Medicare fraud wrote a polite letter to the hospital asking for its side of the story regarding the complaint that I helped our client file. The hospital ignored the polite letter from the Medicare federal investigators. That was a stupid move. Medica re t hen FORCED THE HOSPITAL TO REPAY OUR CLIENT THE $527 THAT I REQUESTED IT RETURN IN THE THREE POLITE LET TERS TH AT I H A D SENT. All the help that I gave t his client – a nd ever y client that I have helped – was FREE OF CHARGE. T h is i nsu ra nce agenc y d ist i ng u ishes it sel f by helpi ng cl ients w it h Medicare related medical bill problems as a value a dde d s e r v ic e t o ou r clients. We “go the extra mi le” w it h our clients. Does you r i nsu ra nce agent or agency give this high level of assistance to senior citizen clients? If not, why not?

Question : I recent ly ret ired a nd my husband will retire in a few years. We currently make more than $4,000 monthly together and already own our 1940 home of 1,600 sq. ft. It’s an old-fashioned home, but in good condition. We have updated much of our home. My husband wants to sell and buy something larger and I want to remodel rather than have a $150 to $200,000 dollar larger home and high monthly payments again. Within our area the homes are selling at $60 to $90,000 and I believe that we can sell for $89,000. I want to stay and he wants to sell. What do think we should do?

Which IRA Is Better for Younger Workers? BOB KRYGSHELD I f y ou’r e a t t h e beginning of your career, you might not be thinking too much about the end of it. But even younger workers should be aware of – and saving for – their event ua l ret i rement. You’ve got a lot of options to consider – one of which is whether an IRA may be appropriate for you and, if so, what type. E s s e n t i a l l y, y o u ca n choose bet ween a “traditional” IR A and a Roth IRA. (Other types of IRAs are available if you’re self-employed.) W i t h a t r a d i t i on a l IR A, you cont r ibute “pretax” dollars, so your contributions are generally tax-deductible, depending on your income limits and whether you also have a 401(k) or other retirement plan at work. In 2016, you can contribute up to $5,500 to your traditional IR A, although the limit rises once you reach 50. You can fund your IR A with many types of investments – for ex a mple, stock s, bonds, and government sec u r it ies – a nd you r earnings grow on a taxdeferred basis. A Rot h IR A has t he sa me $ 5,500 a n nua l contribution limit and can also be funded with many t y pe s of i nve st ment s. But there are some key differences. You can only contribute to a Roth IRA if your income is below a certain threshold, but t hat t hreshold is quite high. So you’ll likely be eligible. However, your contributions are never tax-deductible, so you’re basica l ly f unding your Roth IRA with money on which you’ve already been taxed. But your earnings can grow tax free, as long as you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½ and you’ve had your account at least five years.
A s s u m i n g y ou c a n cont r ibute to eit her a traditional or a Roth IRA, which should you choose? T h e r e’s n o on e r i g ht answer for everyone, but as a younger worker, you may be able to gain two important benefits from contributing to a Roth. F i r s t , s i n c e y ou’r e probably earning much less now than you w ill later in your career, you’re likely in a relatively low ta x bracket. So it may make sense to pay income taxes now on your Roth cont r ibut ions, rat her than pay the taxes later on w it hd r a w a l s f r om a t rad it iona l IR A. A nd second, a Roth IR A may provide more f lexibility than a traditiona l IR A. Usua l ly, t he on ly way to get mone y f r om a traditional IRA before you retire is through a shortter m loa n ; ot her w i se, y ou c a n get h it w it h both taxes and penalties on ea rly w it hd r aw a l s. But w it h a Rot h I R A , you can w ithdraw your cont r ibut ions (not t he ea r n i ngs) pena lt y f ree to help pay for your first house or to go back to school. St i l l, a s ment ioned above, there’s no hardand-fast rule as to which IRA is better for younger workers. Your tax advisor may be able to provide some guidance on whether a traditional or a Roth IRA is better for you – but either one ca n be a va luable resource. Edward Jones, its employees a n d f in a n c i a l a dv i s or s cannot provide tax or legal advice. You should consult your attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Hammond Baptist Senior Kreg Carpenter will go to Indianapolis next month to represent Lake County Right to Life in the state oratory competition. Carpenter, 18, was the winner of this year’s local oratory contest, in which he competed against nine of his fellow classmates in the art of pro-life persuasion. “It was nerve-racking,” he said, describing the experience of giving the speech. “It was the culmination of a process I put so much effort into.” Carpenter, much like his peers, spent several months preparing for his oration through the synthesis of thorough research and the articulation of personal convictions. According to Ca r penter, t he most dif f icu lt pa r t was memorizing the speech. “I practiced my speech almost 50 times in the past week,” he said. Carpenter spoke on the topic of stem cell research, and specifically called into question the ethics of using embryonic stem cells. “It is a topic not a lot of people seem to know about,” he explained. He cited some of the lesser known risks associated with embryonic stem cells, such as an increased potential to form tumors. He also emphasized the progress of adult stem cell therapy, prompting doubt about the need for embryonic stem cell research. Underneath all of the academic research, however, is a person of faith. Carpenter attributed participation in the contest to his Christian values. “I am very open about what I believe,” he said. He also commended LCRTL for hosting the event and the role the play within the pro-life community. Carpenter w ill give his speech again on May 7 at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, where he will be joined by other young oratorical winners from across the state. The contest, which is sponsored by Indiana Right to Life, will send one winner to Washington, D.C. for the national oratory contest. Ca r penter w ill be g iven a moneta r y prize for his achievement, as well as recognition at this year’s LCRTL banquet. “The knowledge I have gained is the most rewarding part of this experience,” Carpenter said. “My goal was just to do the best job I could.”
