Mental Health America Lake County Has Been Helping for 60 Years W hen you walk into Mental Health America of Lake County’s office in Hammond, there is one glaring detail that stands out; it’s nearly empty. This may seem unconventional at first, but once you understand the organization’s mission and community impact, one thing is clear; MHALC is changing the community for the better. “The dedicated professionals of Mental Health America of Lake County provide connection,” said CEO Renae VaniaTomczak. “For some that’s defined as connecting to needed community resources; for others it’s defined as the ability to connect in offering support where no support exists.” MHALC, a non-profit organization specializing in the prevention and early intervention of mental illness, is celebrating their 60th anniversary this year. Although their focus has shifted since the organization’s founding in 1957, their impact on families throughout the community is only becoming more prevalent. When founded, the organization’s mission was to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. However, in late 1990s, they decided to shift gears, and take their efforts into the living rooms of Northwest Indiana. “We work with families to educate and empower them to make positive choices and changes in their lives, which directly impacts future generations of children growing up in Lake County,” said Freyek. Since t his cha nge, MH A LC has become a premier prevention agency in Lake County. They have also grown into the areas largest home visiting parent education agency, providing more than 12,000 home visits to 1,200 families in 2016. Along with in-home visits, the organization offers a multitude of programs aimed at promoting positive mental health and overall well-being for children and families.

Call 811 Before You Dig The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), in concurrence with Governor Bruce Rauner, recognizes April as Sa fe Digg i ng Mont h i n Il li nois, a statewide public safety and education campaign to increase awareness about the importance of calling 811 before starting outdoor projects in order to locate underground utility lines. T h e r e w a s a y ou n g woma n who had been diagnosed with a terminal i l l ne s s a nd h ad be en g iven t hree mont hs to live. So, as she was getting her things ‘in order,’ she contacted her Pastor and had h i m come to her house to discuss certain a spects of her f i na l wishes. She told h i m w h ich songs she wanted sung at t he ser v ice, what scriptures she would like read, a nd w hat out f it she wanted to be buried i n. Ever y t h i ng wa s i n or der a nd t he Pa s tor was preparing to leave when the young woman sudden ly remembered something very important to her. ‘ T h e r e ’s o n e m o r e thing,’ she said excitedly. ‘ W h a t ’s t h a t ? ’ t h e Pastor’s replied. ‘This is very important,’ the young woman continued. ‘I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand.’ T h e P a s t o r s t o o d lo ok i ng at t he y ou ng w om a n , not k now i n g quite what to say. T h a t s u r pr i s e s y ou , doesn’t it? ’ t he you ng woman asked. ‘Well, to be honest, I’m puzzled by the request,’ said the Pastor. T he you ng woma n explained, ‘My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always t r ied to pass a long its message to those I love a nd t hose i n ne e d of encouragement. In all my years of attending socials a nd d i n ners, I a lway s remember that when the dishes of the main course were being clea red, someone would inevitably lean over and say, ‘Keep you r fork .’ It w a s my favorite part because I k ne w t h at s omet h i ng better was coming...like velvet y chocolate ca ke or deep-dish apple pie something wonderful!’ So, I just want people to see me there in that

casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder ‘ What’s with the fork? ’ Then I want you to tell them: ‘Keep your fork...t he best is yet to come.’ The Pastor k new this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did. She had a better grasp of what heaven wou ld be like t ha n ma ny people twice her age, with twice as much experience and k nowledge. She K NEW that something better was coming. At the funeral people were wa l k i ng by t he you ng woma n’s casket and they saw the cloak she was wearing and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the Pastor heard the question, ‘W hat’s w it h t he fork? ’ A nd over a nd over he smiled. During his message, the Pastor told the people of the conversation he had w ith the young woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. He told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right. So, the next time you reach down for your fork let it remind you that the best is yet to come. Show your friends a nd fa m i ly how much you care. You never know when it may be your time or their time to ‘Keep your fork.’ Anonymous. Transit Development Of The Entire South Shore Line Hou s e Bi l l ( H B ) 114 4 w a s a ppr ov e d unanimously by the Senate on Thursday. This bill is a huge win for Northwest Indiana, as it paves the way for transit development of the entire South Shore Line, from Illinois to South Bend. HB 1144, aut hored by Representative Harold Slager and sponsored by Senators Tallian, Melton, Niezgodski and Randolph, wou ld per m it t he Nor t hwest Ind ia na Regional Development Authority to establish transit development districts within the Northwest Indiana corridor, including the new double track project in Porter County and Michigan City. This would connect more Hoosiers to h ig h-pay ing jobs in Chicago in a significantly shorter time.

“This will be transformative for Northwest Ind ia na,” State Senator Ka ren Ta l l ia n (D-Portage) said. “Our rail line has been transporting people for over 100 years. We must continue to maintain and upgrade our line for future generations.” Senator Tallian made two amendments in the Senate, fine-tuning the bill to ensure that the mechanics worked properly for both the Regional Development Authority counties (Lake and Porter) and for the nonmember counties of LaPorte and St. Joe. “I am happy to see this pass out of the Senate,” Sen. Tallian said. “I anticipate its success in bettering the lives of the hard working people of Northwest Indiana.”

To those who asks, “God, where are you? ” The Holy Spirit says, “Come and see!” The f irst step in seeing God is to “confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Rom. 10 : 9). Once confession is made and you receive God’s gift of salvation, the Holy Spirit comes alongside you, and will live in you, bringing you into fellowship with God. “Come and See,” Jesus answered to John’s disciples who asked Him where He was staying. They followed Him to His home and stayed with Him all that day. So intriguing was the visit with this new Rabbi that one of the disciples, Andrew, ran and got his brother Simon Peter and brought him to Jesus. The next day in the market place, Jesus sees Phillip and says, “Follow Me.” He too is captivated by Jesus and runs to Nathaniel exclaiming, “I have found the Messiah, the one Moses talked about in the law. His name is Jesus of Nazareth.” Nathaniel replies, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? ” Phillip says, “Come and see for yourself.” God, at the very beginning of human existence enjoyed fellowship with man. Scripture says that in the cool of the day Adam experience fellowship with the Almighty. But when sin entered humanity fellowship w ith God was broken. Yet God continued to reach out to man, to re-establish fellowship with him. The Ark of the Covenant, a chest God instructed Moses to build, represented God’s desire to live in fellowship among

Behavioral Workers Devote Time to Better Animal’s Lives Making a difference in the lives of animals and potential adopters are what behavioral workers are known for. The Humane Society Calumet Area is lucky enough to have a group of workers that are dedicated to the job. From cleaning up after the animals to one-on-one behavioral sessions, the behavioral workers do it all and then some. A n i ma ls t hat a re considered for behav iora l work may include animals that are stressed out, scared, or aggressive due to fear. Some can be animals that are feeling uncomfortable at the shelter around new people. It’s not always animals that have just come in, sometimes being in the shelter for a long period of time can cause behavioral issues because of stress or fear. “That is why we work hard every day to try and make it less stressful until they can find their forever home,” said Rhonda Aguilera, head of the behavioral worker. The behavioral workers care for the animal’s mental wellbeing while they’re staying at the shelter. Other tasks they do are heading the daily enrichment programs, canine playgroups, assess animals when they come in, provide adoption and post adoption support to adopters, monitor the behaviors, assist other departments, and create new behavior protocols. “We have had several dogs who were labeled as dog aggressive or haven’t done well with other dogs. By having playgroups, these same dogs have made so much progress being around other dogs,” said Jenna Jones, behavioral worker. The playgroups are a great way to build up an animal’s Wanted: 5 gallon water bottles (clear plastic jugs). Awning for above house door/window. Aluminum or other light material. in the kennel was frustration from the environment,” said Jones. This same dog, like many others the behavioral workers have worked with, got adopted into families that have other dogs. “We introduced a group of five dogs who were scared and shy with people. As they began to spend time together and interact, they started to develop more confidence. They would approach people and allow them to pet them. The way they helped each other emotionally was an incredible thing to be a part of,” said Kristen Jeppeson, behavioral worker. All of the behavioral workers believe the job can be an emotional rollercoaster. It can be incredibly rewarding and completely heartbreaking at times. “We see dogs go from abusive/neglectful backgrounds to becoming balanced and healthy animals. Being a small part of that process makes it very rewarding,” said Jeppeson. The behav iora l workers are extremely hardwork ing individuals and are always trying to come up with new ways to help improve the animal’s lives. Even when the workers are not on the job, they are still continuously thinking of different things they can do when working with the animals. They are all passionate about what they do and love seeing the progress each animal makes over time. “I love ever y part of my job. I know I am making a difference in the lives of needy animals as well as people looking for their new companion. It fills my life with joy and makes my heart truly happy to know that I can be a part of this amazing organization,” said Aguilera.

For those dogs who might not be comfortable in groups, the workers have one on one sessions with them where they take them on walks or do basic obedience training with them. “One dog used to sound extremely dog reactive whenever other dogs walked past her kennel. When we tried her in a playgroup, she was perfectly fine. What she was displaying

Critter Carnival Success T he Hu m a ne S o c ie t y C a lu me t Area hosted their annual gala event, the Critter Carnival, on March 25 at the Munster Performing Arts Center. The event was a huge success and an enjoyable night for all who attended. The gala raised over $57,000 for both the Humane Societ y Calumet Area a nd t he Mor a i ne R idge W i ld l i fe Rehabilitation Center. Stephanie Anderson, development associate, sa id, “It was a success because we have a great community of supporters who love animals and stand behind the work done at the Humane Society Calumet Area.” 320 people were in attendance for the event. This was the first time in event history that the gala sold out a few weeks before it took place. Guests were able to bid on items during the silent auction, hold adoptable puppies, take pictures at the photo booth, and

taste beers from Three Floyd’s Brewing. There also was a wildlife table set up for the guests to learn more about what the

wildlife center does. They had a wide variety of ambassador animals at the table for the guests to see. “I think it was a great opportunity for people to learn about our wildlife center and the great work being done there. I think many people aren’t aware that we have a wildlife center and that it is one of the few in Northern Indiana,” said Anderson. The Humane Society Calumet Area is grateful for all of the hard work the donors, volunteers, sponsors, and staff put into the Critter Carnival. “Everyone that attended the event ha s a c on ne c t ion w it h a nd love of animals. It is really great to see everyone come together to help benefit the animals at both our shelter and wildlife center,” said Molly Dunne, marketing and events coordinator.

‘Small Craft Warning’ Hooks Top Spot

page

Three guys made the most of their early season fishing trip this past Sunday while participating in a fishing tournament hosted by the Wolf Lake Rod and Gun Club in Hegewisch, IL. Michael Zralka, Robert Mehok and Frank Martin headed out on Frank’s boat named the Small Craft Warning, and they had high hopes of getting off to a fast start. These guys have years of experience on Lake Michigan, and when they combine their knowledge of salmon and trout fishing, the odds are usually in their favor. Early season fishing means that the fish are closer in to shore, however Lake Michigan is a huge body of water and just locating the fish is a challenge. A windy month of March did not help since high winds turn the south end of the lake into a color resembling chocolate milk. Fish need to see the bait fish and lures, and murky water makes for an added challenge. There are fancy tools like GPS and fish-finders to help the Lake Michigan angler, but for the most part these guys find fish the old-school way – gut instinct. It didn’t take long for Small Craft Warning to get their gear set up. After much discussion and lobbying for their favorite spots, they decided to try the breakwall that juts out into Lake Michigan from Calumet Harbor near 95th St. Fishing on the big lake includes downriggers to get the lures fifty feet below the boat, and planer boards that allow multiple surface lines to be spread out on port and starboard. Add a few leadcore lines off the stern and then it’s time to watch the rods for any sign of interest from fish that are a long way from the boat - and 50 feet deep. After all the gear is set its time to relax. New jokes heard over the long winter and past fishing adventures are recalled at this time – just in case your fishing buddies may have forgotten your past exploits. Often, it’s hard to pay attention to the actual fishing since the stories of past trips are so fantastic – and the new jokes so funny. Some guys can’t remember any new jokes and recycle the old ones, just like the fishing stories. It’s possible that some exaggeration may occasionally occur since angler’s memory naturally tend to round up both size and weight. The lures have exotic names like Green Dolphin, Dr. Kevorkian and Dreamweaver. Spin Doctors even have a little propeller that Lake Trout can’t seem to resist. Dipsey Divers take shiny metal dodgers to the right depth and entice the fish to hit a fluorescent fly. The rods are under tension, and when a salmon or trout Captain Frank Martin introduces mascot Skunky to a silver fish. hits the lure, the rods snaps upright and sets the hook. After a few moments, the fish realizes that its hooked and has few tricks to play to shake the hook loose. It can run straight at the boat, launch itself into the air or shake it head to dislodge the hook. There are any number of things that can go wrong, including tangled lines and the fish spitting the hook. If all goes well, the fish is reeled to the back of the boat, and the net guy coaxes Coho Salmon and Lake Trout from Lake Michigan the fish into a long-handled net without spooking it. After several hours, Small Craft Warning headed over the ‘Hole In The Wall’ which is located along the Inland Steel wall that begins at Pastrick Marina in East Chicago, Indiana. The cooler soon held 10 Lakers and Coho for a total of 66 lbs. The largest fish was a Lake Trout that weighted just under 15 lbs. Small Craft Warning proudly took first place in their first tournament of the year. Every fisherman has their own fishing superstitions, but there is one universal no-no when venturing out on the lake. Leave the bananas at home! The ‘bad luck bananas’ is one of the oldest and longest running boating superstition out there. The origin of this belief dates way back to the Caribbean trade of the 1700’s. Those early boaters blamed bananas for slow fishing days - and even boats capsizing and sinking. Some guys even take it a step farther and avoid banana bread, banana muffins and Banana Boat sunscreen. You can’t be too careful when a simple fruit can be the difference between a hand (5 fish) in the cooler and getting skunked. Speaking of skunks – a skunk is invited on most trips on Small Craft Warning. You can see him pictured here. It’s a friendly skunk, and he makes sure to behave himself since there is a fancy necklace (noose) around his neck to remind him who’s in charge. That skunk has been on so many fishing trips over the years that he has turned himself into a reliable good luck charm – and every fisherman needs one of those. If you are interested in getting into salmon fishing on Lake Michigan, Calumet Marine is the place to start. Forget about the big box sporting goods stores - and support a local business. Frank and Denise Martin own Calumet Marine and they have all the equipment needed for success out on the water. Calumet Marine is located at 426 Burnham Ave, Calumet City, IL 60409 or visit them on the web at www.calumetmarine.com. Grace, Pay It Forward MIKE BUDER Luke 6:45 says, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings out the evil stored up in his heart, for t he mout h spea k s what the heart is full of.” Whether you’re a believer or not, it’s hard to argue the truth that this passage of sc r ipt u re cont a i n s. W hat comes out of our mouths will reveal what is truly in our hearts. And if this is true then based on t he rhetor ic t hat is being spoken on all sides today, it is safe to say that A mer ica ha s a ser ious heart problem. “We the People” seem to have forgotten how to treat one anot her. Mean spirited comments and hostility in t he news and socia l med ia net work s leave me wondering, when did America’s citizens become one of its enemies? Our politics have become so cor rosive a nd d iv isive that the primary casualty h a s b e c om e c om m on de c enc y a nd r e s p e c t . Lately it seems that we dehumanize and view one another w ith suspicion and contempt, and often we reduce our neighbors

to a label. This week, Christians around the world w i l l obser ve t he most i m p or t a nt e v e nt t h a t history has ever recorded. From Good Friday t hrough Easter Sunday we reflect upon prophecy fulfilled, selfless sacrifice and the gift of grace that was freely given to us from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This is a great time for us to think about the u n mer ite d g r ac e t h at has been offered to us. Financial Advice Column

Teach Your Children Well … About Finances and Investing BOB KRYGSHELD your kids that by staying within your budget, you can help avoid problems such as debt and extra fees tacked onto bills for late payments. Living within your means pays off in the long run! • Have fun with investing. E v e n y ou n g c h i ld r e n enjoy le a r n i n g a b out the investment process, especially if you explain to them that they can be an owner of a company t hat ma kes a product or service they like. You might want to pick such a company and, along with your child, chart its course over time. You could give your child a pretend $100 bill to “invest” in t his company and then see how its va lue changes, explaining along the way that various factors – such as the popularity of the company’s products, the skill of its managers, etc. – will affect the stock’s pr ice. You m ig ht a lso want to show your child how your own stocks and ot her i nvest ment s a re performing. By sharing your enthusiasm for it with your children, you can encourage them to invest throughout their lives. The more k nowledge about f i na nces a nd investing t hat you can impart to your children now, the more empowered they will be to make smart financia l moves in the future.

H ig h debt le v el s … lack of sav i ngs … t he inability to budget – these problems all have several causes, but one of them is almost certainly financial illiteracy. Too many of us just never developed the money management skills necessar y to cope with our complicated – and expensive – world. But if you have young children, you can teach them some money-smart lessons: • Save for a goa l. It’s important to teach them t h a t t h e y c a n’t h a v e ever y t hing – a nd t hey c e r t a i n l y c a n’t h a v e everything right now. So, once they are old enough to receive an allowance or to earn money in some fashion, encourage them to set a goal for something they want, such as a toy or v ideo ga me, a nd to put money aside ever y week for that goal. Model t his behav ior yourself. Consider i ng ma k i ng a major purchase in t he future, such as a car? Show your children how you are setting aside money regularly for this purpose, rat her t ha n borrow ing or put t i ng t he ent i re purchase on a credit card. • Establish a budget. It can be challenging to create a household budget and just as difficult to stick to it – but for most people, it’s worth the effort. You’ll be doing your children a favor by show ing them how you have a certain amount of income and where it goes – mortgage, utilities, groceries, retirement accounts, etc. – each month. Explain to

Overcoming Your Credit Card Crisis The battle with credit card debt can be a constant struggle against high interest rates and monthly payments that never seem to make a dent in what you owe. How is it possible to make monthly credit card payments and never get anywhere? This problem is caused by high interest rates that eats up most of your payments. Even though you make your minimum payment, you don’t make much headway eliminating the debt. Luckily, there’s a way to find debt relief without incurring more debts. Using certified credit counseling like Consolidated Credit, you can get

professional advice to identify the right solution for your needs. A certified credit counselor can review your options to see which solution is best for you. You can qualify for lower interest rates or even eliminate them, while consolidating your credit card debt into one easy payment to get you out of debt faster. Every financial institution differs, but most people see a reduction of total payments by up to 30-50% as they pay off debt faster. Freedom from debt can become a reality!

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Q. Our home is for sale. We are not home for viewings, but we do have cameras that record the walk through with each showing. We were surprised how these people open our closets, kitchen cabinets and appliances. Do you think we should say something to our Realtor? A. Say something about what? Are you taking the closets w ith you? Are you removing the Kitchen cabinets for your new home? I can guess with extreme certainty that you are not taking them with you. Since you are leaving them because they are part of the home, what is wrong with the buyers looking at them, observing the space they offer & feeling the quality? As far as appliances go, whether you plan on leaving them or taking them with you, they are still negotiable items! Buyers have every right to observe them in a respectful manner. As Mother’s Day approaches, food pantry operator Cindy Bean and Greater Hammond C om mu n it y S er v ic e s a r e s c he du l i n g volunteers for the National Postal Drive. The National Postal Drive is an annual event held every second Saturday in May. People across the nation can leave food at their door for postman to pick up or drop off goods at their local post office. All food will go to local food banks. “It’s the busiest time of year for us. Last year we received over 10,000 lbs. of food,” Bean said. GHCS is getting food from Hammond, Hessville, and Munster. Local volunteers and Organizations are stopping by GHCS to lend a hand in organizing all the food. Places like Target and Horseshoe Casino are sending volunteers to help. Clark High School will be sending over students to organize food as well. “We’re closing the week after the Postal Drive. CHAMPION BOWLER MIKE JONES ON THE BOWLING BANDWAGON: Some, if not all of us, have bowled in our lifetime, but 57 year old Mike Jones started bowling as a 4 year old in Chicago and never looked back. He is pictured here in his kitchen with some of his hundreds of trophies and rings (just like the super bowl but with a bowling designation) earned all across the country! By way of his wins, Mike has 10 career 300 games to his credit, 2 career 800 series and appeared in 19 National Championship Tournaments all over the country. His most exciting win or ‘”biggest claim to fame” was in 1955 with a 300 game in a National Tournament in Reno, Nevada. Mike’s dad Dale and mom Elaine encouraged the young prodigal to bowl as much as he could and he has been crushing the competition ever since! His alleys of choice these days are the Orland Bowl in Orland Park and Plaza Lanes in Highland, In. Mike also gives lessons and instructions. If you would to contact him call 773-646-3462. Way to go Mike Jones!
