Saved Valpo Client Almost $3000
WOODROW WILCOX On Ma rch 29, 2016, I wrote a letter to a client about t he resolution of his case and the resulting savings of almost $3,000. With a few edits to protect the privacy of our client, here is that letter to the client. ### Today, our office was notified that your bill for $2,960.56 was cancelled a nd t hat t he bi l l now has a ba la nce of zero. Enclosed are copies of the two letters that I sent on your behalf which should resu lt in you receiv ing confirmation by mail of the zero balance bill very soon. Plea se, tel l ot hers about you r ex per ience w it h our insura nce agency. Let t hem k now that this insurance agency rea l ly ca res about ou r senior citizen clients and that we really do “go the extra mile” for our clients. Let them know that when you received a medical bill for almost three thousand dollars and questioned the bill, all you had to do was give the bill to our agency and cooperate with our investigation of that bill. Let others know that our efforts saved you almost three thousand dollars.
The Medicare system is fa r f rom per fect. W hen mistakes or fraud attempts happen, senior citizens on Medicare can lose time and money. If no one who is familiar with the system investigates the bill for possible errors or fraud, seniors get stuck pay ing a bi l l t hat t hey really don’t owe. This insurance agency helped you with this bill AT NO CH A RGE . T h i s insurance agency gives this high level of service to our senior citizen clients as a “value added” service to prove our commitment to ou r s en ior c l ient s. Please, recommend Senior Care Insurance Services to others. Thank you for allowing us to help you with your insurance needs. ### Note : Woodrow Wi lcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care I n su r a nc e S er v ic e s i n Merrillville, Indiana. EDITORIAL Illinois Plays Kick the Can
Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer
www.myshopper.biz/columnists/
The State of Illinois is known for kicking the can down the road when it comes to finances. Illinois has unpaid bills for social services, as well as unpaid pension obligations. In fact, Illinois ranks near the bottom of all 50 states when it comes to financial health. School districts are hurting all over our state due to lack of commitment for education at the state level - and an overreliance on property taxes to fund education. In light of these financial challenges, The Board of Education at Thornton High School District 205 have made some difficult decisions at a special board meeting held recently. At this meeting a Reduction in Force (RIF) was discussed. This RIF is necessary to address 4 critical challenges that face the district. The first fiscal challenge is declining enrollment. In 2006 District 205 served 6,300 students, while 2017 projection is 4,500 students. These include students enrolled at Thornton, Thornwood and Thornridge combined. This lower enrollment leads to the second challenge of declining daily attendance. This is the number that the State of Illinois monitors and uses to decide how much revenue to send the district. Simply stated – lower attendance results in lower state contributions to our schools. The third challenge is declining property tax collections. In the past District 205 has enjoyed a 92% tax collection rate. Today that collection rate stands at just 82%. Property owners are buckling under an antiquated system of funding education in Illinois. This lower collection rate results in an $11 million decrease every year for District 205 to operate. Finally, District 205 has declining fund balances. Simply put, outgoing expenses are more than incoming revenue. We all know that when this happens, you can kick the can until someday down the road - or deal with the challenge today. After an in-depth review of these 4 fiscal challenges, the Board of Education accepted the recommendation of the District administration to release 75 faculty members. “While releasing staffing is never easy, the District 205 Board of Education is committed to increased student achievement while ushering the district through challenging financial times and improving the district’s overall financial outlook,” the Board of Education stated. The teachers will finish the school year before being ‘honorably dismissed,” said Jerry Doss, Human Resources Director. “This cut is to match student enrollment and were made by department, and based on projected need.” Doss said. District 205 Board of Education is to be commended for meeting these fiscal challenges head on. It’s easy to kick the can down the road, but if fiscal challenges are ignored, they will only get worse. These decisions affect individuals and their families – and that is why they can be so difficult. However, by their actions, District 205 Board of Ed has strengthened the future of District 205. I encourage all residents to contact their Illinois State Representative and Senator to demand that Illinois step up to the plate and fix school funding in this State - once and for all. The time for action is now – our students deserve nothing less. Arlo Kallemeyn – Shopper Newspaper Publisher

On The Market VS In The Market MIKE BUDER There is a big difference between a seller being on the market VS being in the market. To put a home on the market a seller hires a real estate agent to list their house for sale. If that home is in the market, agents and buyers v iew t he proper t y a nd make offers to purchase it. A fishing analogy would be if the bait is floating on top of the water, but the fish are in the lake 25 feet below, the fisherman will get a nice suntan but will not hook any trout. The wise angler will continue to lower his bait until the fish begin to bite. A novice w i l l c u r se t he f i sh i ng guide, and consider taking up golf as a new hobby. In her book Death And Dying, Elizabeth KublerRoss said there are 5 stages of dy ing: denial, anger, ba rga in ing, depression a nd accepta nce. Ma ny home sellers go through 5 similar stages on the way to a sold sign or expired listing. Lets look at those stages in detail. DENI A L is a ps yc holog ic a l defen s e mecha n ism t hat lets a person “off the hook” for any responsibilit y for a problem, such as a home not selling. Many times t he agent becomes t he sc ape goat . It ’s a l w ay s easier to blame a realtor t ha n locate t he rea l problem. Frequent ly the problem is improper pricing, greed and impatience. ANGER is a choice. It is seldom a wise choice. S ome p e ople ac t u a l l y enjoy “lighting their hair on fire”. It’s a relatively
inexpensive way to gain a t t e nt ion . It ’s a l w a y s e a s i e r t o “c u r s e t h e da rk ne s s, t hat l ig ht a candle”. BARGAINING is a prea ssu med posit ion t hat many overpriced sellers never get to. They make statements l i ke “i f t he buyer makes me an offer, I’ll negotiate with them” or “why can’t the buyer make me an offer? ” Fish (and buyers) are ver y smart. They usually wait for the bait to be lowered to their level before they bite. Even f lying fish seldom jump right into the boat. DEPRESSION can be avoided if a sellers “mental maps” reflect reality. They seldom do. T hat’s why many listings expire. Most properties are overpriced and improperly staged. Ma ny sel lers never ask t heir agents what t hey would do if the property were their own. ACCEP TA NCE of a n of fer i s w hat happen s when a seller puts their home on t he ma rket a nd t hen adjusts t hei r pricing into the market. Sel ling a house simply means ACCEPTING REAL ESTATE REALITIES. Neuromas
Neuromas are a scarring of a sheath surrounding the nerve. They usually occur between the 3rd and 4th toes but can be found elsewhere as well. Symptoms include feeling a click in the ball of the foot, or electrical shocks shooting to the ends of the affected toes. Surgery is nearly always needed to alleviate the symptoms although injections, padding or physical therapy can help. If you have any questions concerning neuromas or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Lawrence and Judith Tolefree will be celebrating 40 years of marriage in October of 2016. During these 40 years, God blessed them with 2 biological children, 9 adopted children and 29 teenagers that were in foster care. The Tolefrees made sure that they all lived up to their full potential. In 2006 all the children where grown and they entered a phase where they had time to travel and enjoy life, but God had other plans. He sent 2 special needs children who went through horrific child abuse (shaken baby syndrome). These children are the loves of their lives. The Tolefree family is asking you to open your heart and help purchase a handicapped van to get these children back and forth to their numerous weekly doctors’ appointments. The children are getting bigger, the parents are getting older. They need the van in order to be able to keep these children at home with them. They are currently working with Mobility Works in Villa Park, Illinois to get the handicap van. They have a go fund me account and would appreciate any and all amounts that you can contribute. God Bless and Thank You, Lawrence and Judith Tolefree

GOD WITH US
www.myshopper.biz/columnists/
The God Dilemma ANNA M. CAISON During the past few weeks there has been numerous articles appearing in various online newspapers (including Morga n Freema n’s upcoming mov ie documentary) pondering questions about the existence of God. Is God real? Is God a man, or is God a woman? Is God different to each individual? Or, is God just an ideal concept people grasp for when experiencing traumatic events? The Bible tells us that God is the creator of all things, seen and unseen. A nd t he proof of H i s ex i stenc e i s undeniably a ll around us. He is one God who has revealed Himself to us in 3 persons. He is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is Father to every individual who has put their hope in God the Son. As Son, He is the redeemer of every person who comes to know the Father through faith in His life, death, and resurrection on their behalf. As Holy Spirit He indwells every person who has received Jesus as their Savior. It is through the Holy Spirit that we engage in fellowship with the Father and the Son. God is real and He makes himself known to every individual who earnestly seeks to know Him. My quest to know God began at age 13 through the studying of the Bible. My reason for seeking Him
was to make sense out of life, my life in particular. As I grew in knowledge of the Bible’s many themes and events, its characters, the situations they faced, and God’s interaction with them; I began to seek God in regards to the situations I faced. And just as He came through for Daniel, David, Joseph and others recorded in the Bible, He came through for me too. The past 58 years of fellowship with the Lord has been an ongoing adventure. In a dream, 21 years ago He revealed to me that the lump in my breast was cancerous before the doctor did the biopsy. He also showed me He would remove it. Through another dream, when my children were young, He let me in on a situation my son was about to get involved in that would have ruined his life if I and his father had not been warned in advance and intervened. W hen my family was experiencing a personal famine, God multiplied food before my ver y eyes. He has answered numerous prayers for healing, direction, protection, provision, and peace in crisis. For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that plastic bags w e r e n’t g o o d f o r t h e environment. The woman apolog i zed to her a nd explained, “We didn’t have the green thing back in my day.” That’s right, they didn’t h a v e t he g r e en t h i n g i n her day. Back t hen, they returned their milk bottles, Coke bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, using t he sa me bott les over a nd over. So t hey really were recycled. But they didn’t have the green thing back her day. In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn’t have an escalator in every store and office bu i ld i ng. T hey wa l ked to t he g rocer y store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks. But she’s right. They didn’t have the green thing in her day. Back then, they washed the baby’s diapers because t h e y d i d n’t h a v e t h e t hrow-away k ind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts – w ind a nd sola r power really did dry the clothes. Kids got handme-dow n clot hes f rom their brothers or sisters, not a lw ay s bra nd-new clothing. But that older lady is right, they didn’t have the green thing back in her day. Back t hen, t hey had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a pizza dish, not a screen t he size of t he state of Montana. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by ha nd becau se t hey d id n’t h a v e e le c t r ic
machines to do everything for you. W hen t hey packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used wadded up newspaper to cushion it, not styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, they didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by work ing so t hey didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s r ig ht, t hey didn’t have the green thing back then. T he y d r a n k f rom a fountain when they were thirsty, instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle ever y t i me t hey had a d r i n k of w a t e r. T h e y ref i l led pens w it h in k, instead of buying a new pen, and t hey replaced t he r a z or blade s i n a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But they didn’t have the green thing back then. Back t hen, people took t he st reetca r a nd k id s r o de t he i r bi k e s to school or rode t he school bus, i nstead of turning their moms into a 24-hour ta x i ser v ice. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. A nd they didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to f i nd t he nea rest pi z za joint. It’s a crying shame that we didn’t have “the green thing” back then! Thanks to a Shopper reader for sending this in. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of the color green.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I’m looking to sell my twostory townhome soon. The townhome is seven years old and has a few minor issues which I have fixed. A crack going through the garage was filled in via the home warranty and now I am working on getting a leak fixed because of a faulty siding installation which is also being covered by warranty. When I asked the individual that represents the builder about having to disclose these items on the seller’s disclosure, he informed me that the items, once fixed through the warranty, need not be on the disclosure. My intention is that there be no glaring issues with the house when it goes up for sale. My question is whether the items that have already been fixed should show up on the seller’s disclosure. Answer: If they’ve been properly fixed they’re not problems anymore. You should certainly hang onto all receipts and proof that the work was done in case problems
arise again in the future. W hat to d i sclose i s a debat able matter. Some wou ld a rg ue t hat you should mention the repairs, others say they are irrelevant. Still others say if you mention a bunch of repairs and miss one that you might then be accused of hiding something, even though that’s obviously not your intention. One of the best ways to resolve such problems is to list major repair work and require as a condition of the sale that the buyers obtain a professional home inspect ion by t he inspector of t heir choice. The students told about their experiences and touted the virtues of attending SSC to not only save money but to have an opportunity to learn a skilled profession f rom ded icated Ca reer a nd Technical Education (CTE) facult y. The questions posed were relevant and t he
answers given were well thought out. In addition to the Student Panel, several demonstrations were available. “The Nail Hitting” demonstration was conducted by the Building & Construction Trades. Students were able to try their hand at how fast and accurate they could drive in nails. If hammering noise was any indication, many participants were able to test their skills. Another demonstration was conducted by the Electronics Engineering Technolog y staff. It featured a “lie detector” test and students had a lot of fun testing the accuracy of the assembled machine that was built and wired by current students. Fact-filled data and resources were also disseminated from Star Truck Driving School including information about the first woman to obtain a CDL (Commercial Drivers’ License) in the United States. Her name is Lillie Elizabeth Bonner and she received it in 1929! To see our “Bulldog Bites” segment please visit https://youtu.be/WgkSPZH-CmY. Should You Change Your Investment Mix Over Time? BOB KRYGSHELD To be successf u l at investing, some people think they need to “get in on the ground floor” of the next “big thing.” However, i nstead of wa it i ng for that one “hot” stock that may never come along, consider creat i ng a n asset allocation – a mix of investments – t hat’s appropriate for your needs, goals and risk tolerance. But once you have such a mix, should you keep it intact forever, or will you need to make some changes? And if so, when? To b e g i n w i t h , why is asset a llocation important? Different types of investments – growth stocks, income-producing stock s, i nter nat iona l stocks, bonds, government securities, and so on – have unique characteristics, so they rarely rise or fall at the same time. Thus, owning a mix of investments can help reduce the forces of market volatility. (Keep i n m i nd, t houg h, t hat allocation does not ensure a profit or protect against los s.) You r pa r t ic u l a r mix will depend on your investment time horizon, comfort w it h risk, a nd financial goals. When you are young, and starting out in your c a reer, you may w a nt your asset allocation to be more heavily weighted toward stocks and stockbased investments. Stock investments historically have prov ided the greatest returns over the long term – although, as you’ve probably hea rd, past performance can’t guarantee future results – and you will need this g row t h potent ia l to help achieve your longterm goals. Stocks also carry a greater degree of investment risk, including the risk of losing principal, but when you have many yea rs to i nvest, you have time to potentially overcome the inevitable short-term declines. Once you reach t he middle-to-later stages of your career, you may have achieved some of your goals that required wealth
accu mu lat ion, such as sending your children to college. However, what is likely your biggest longterm goa l – retirement – still awaits you, so you may not want to scale back too much on your stocks and other growth-oriented investments. Nonetheless, including an allocation to bonds can help to reduce some of the volatility of the stock portion of your portfolio. No w, f a s t f o r w a r d to just a few years before you retire. At this point, you may want to lower your overa l l risk level, because, with retirement looming, you don’t have much time to bounce back f rom dow nturns – a nd you don’t want to start w ithdraw ing from your retirement accounts when your portfolio is already going down. So, now may be the time to add bonds and other fixed-income investments. Finally, you’re retired. At this point, you should adjust your asset allocation to include enough incomeproducing invest ments – bonds, certificates of deposit, perhaps dividendpaying stocks – to help you enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Yet, you can’t forget that the cost of living will likely r i s e t h r ou g h out y ou r retirement. In fact, at a modest 3% inflation rate, the price of goods w ill more than double after 25 years. So even during r e t i r e me nt , y ou ne e d your portfolio to provide some g row t h potent ia l to help you avoid losing purchasing power. B y b ei n g a w a r e of you r a s set a l loc at ion, a nd by ma k i ng t i mely adjustments as necessary, you can provide yourself with the opportunities for growth and income that you will need throughout your life.
