South Suburban College’s John Pigatti is the recipient of the 2017 Jack Bennett Man of the Year Award. Pigatti continues to excel at South Suburban College in Illinois. He led the program to the NJCAA Division II Final Four for the second consecutive season and was named the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association’s Junior College Division II and Region IV-B Coach of the Year for the eighth time in 11 seasons at the school. Pigatti’s squad finished the season with a 23-12 record. They have compiled a 313-55 mark during his tenure. “All Coach Pigatti does is win and he does it the right way,” said CollegeInsider.com’s Angela Lento. “He should be a Division I head coach right now. The guy can coach.” Last season, he coached Jovan Mooring, who was named the NJCAA Division II Player of the Year. The Jack Bennett Award, which represents winning with integrity, is named in honor of former head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Bennett won five Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles, made five NCAA tournament appearances and won two national championships. He’s the program’s all-time winningest coach with a 200-56 record. In 34 seasons as head coach he compiled a record of 480-175. For more information, contact Coach Pigatti at (708) 5962000, ext. 2524. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

Sloppy Bookkeeping By Billing Company WOODROW WILCOX On April 7, 2017, I wrote a let ter to a me d ic a l service provider who uses a med ica l bi l ling f ir m t hat ha s rea l ly sloppy bookkeeping habits. The client is an elderly man f r o m M i c h i g a n C i t y, Indiana. Many doctors, hospita ls, and labs use medical billing services. A good billing service will a d m it a m i s t a k e a nd correct it without a fuss. A bad billing service will disregard a notice of its error. Here is part of the letter that I sent for the client from Michigan City to a medical billing firm that is used by our client’s doctor. ### Our client sent to me a bill from your firm which was dated 3/30/2017. Students Become The Teachers
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question. We are thinking of selling our home. Friends of ours said there are numerous contingencies in a contract that must be met even if we have an accepted contract on our home. Is this true? Answer. Yes, it is true. Your buyer offers you a price that is acceptable to you. The contract is signed by Buyer and Seller, a closing date is in the contract. Easy deal, right? Not yet. There are other paragraphs in a sales contract that must be satisfied before a buyer is approved and a closing can take place. These are called contract contingencies. Once all the contingencies in t he sa les contract are satisf ied, a closing can be set. Your buyer may have a home to sell first before she (him) can buy yours. This is called a contingency on the sale of her (his) home. Your buyer may have sold her home, but is waiting for her home to close before she can buy yours. This is a contingency on the closing of her home. If her deal does not close, she cannot buy your home. After you have accepted the contract, the buyer has approximately a week to have an inspection performed on your home. The contract is contingent on the buyer being satisfied with the results of the home inspection. C o n c r e t e & Pa t c h i n g . Corners of steps cracked, patching guaranteed. Replace walks, steps, patios, drives. Small jobs welcomed. Licensed. Free estimates. Call Dennis D.W. Concrete. 708-418-0523
Electrical We Install Fans, Switches, Ou t l e t s, Ga ra g e Fe e d s. Service upgrades, phone, cable. Building occupancies certification,Residential, Commercial, Restaurants, Apartments. All work guaranteed. Now accepting credit cards. Call 708-8771038
The next contingency is appra isa l. Your home will have to be appraised by a licensed appraiser. Your home must appra ise at or above t he sa les price in the contract. You must also transfer ownership to your buyers with a free and clear title with no liens. Your attorney will order a title report to ensure you have clear title to transfer ownership. Last, but not least, your buyer must be approved for the loan (mortgage.) So, your contract is also contingent on the buyer being able to obtain financing. If for some reason the contract contingencies are not satisfied, and no agreement can be reached, the Contract is dead. In most cases, t he buyer is entitled to receive her deposit back. Don’t be alarmed by all this. These contingencies usually present little or no problem in the sale of your home. This is why you need a good Realtor and Attorney on your team. Respect, Integ rit y, Ca ring, Ha rmony, Excellence and Responsibility are lessons taught by Bishop Noll’s RICHER students, who visit fifth-grade classrooms at local Catholic elementary schools once a month. “This program is such a great opportunity for our students to go to some local schools and teach core principles,” said Colie Zwierz, a Bishop Noll teacher and RICHER Program sponsor. “I look for students who are involved in extracurricular activities, role models in the classroom, and can engage a group of fifth-graders, which is the hardest part.” BNI senior Chris Harvey, of Hammond, is part of the RICHER program. He said his mom was a teacher and he has always enjoyed helping kids. “I have learned to have a more creative and direct look at life,” Harvey said. “To keep the kids interested and participating is a difficult task at the fifth-grade level. The most rewarding part was to see them after the program when I went back the next year
and they remembered our faces. It feels like we really made an impact on them.” BNI senior Ashley Kubacki, of Hammond, said she has learned that she loves helping children, especially those who attend the local grade schools she grew up in and around. “The most rewarding part is seeing the kids retain the information and carry it out in their lives.” she said. Leading the classrooms also gives Noll students the opportunit y to engage an audience. Bishop Noll senior Jailynn Thomas, of Gary, said she has learned that teaching is a lot harder than she thought. “Ma k ing lesson pla ns a nd prepa ring for each lesson takes a lot of time and commitment. I’ve also learned that I love teaching and working with students,” She has an interest in eventually starting her own school for underprivileged girls and teaching them life skills needed to be successful.

South Holland Ministerial News I don’t know who first published this true stor y, but it interestingly illustrates the secret for a truly happy and productive life. T h e l i g ht s w e r e d i m m e d a nd t h e intermission of the concert was coming to a close. Only then did the mother in horror notice her child was missing and was sitting at the impressive Steinway on stage. He was innocently picking out “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” A t t h a t m om e nt t he g r e a t m a s t e r Paderewski made his entrance, quick ly moved to the piano and whispered in the boy’s ear, “Don’t quit…Keep playing.” Then leaning over with his left hand filling in the bass part. Soon his right hand reached around and added a running obbligato. Together, the old master and the young boy transformed that frightening moment into a wonderfully creative experience. Our friend Jesus makes a practice of that
very same thing. In the past 64 years of my ministry time after time, facing a challenge, I have had the feel of that comforting voice, “Don’t quit. Keep going.” And the refreshing presence of the lov ing friend gives the encouragement needed to give it another try. That is the promise Jesus gives to every one of us if our faith in his power is intact. No one ever cared for you and me like Jesus. There’s no other friend so kind and helpful as he is. He is in the business of putting his arms around us in our weakest moment and his voice says, “I am here, do not be afraid, you and I can work out anything that is troubling you.” And do you know what? The hand of the master always makes something beautiful of our lives. Melvin DeVries Pastor Emeritus from First Reformed Church – South Holland

Why do people feel the need to ta l k rea l loud on their cell phones in public? Do the Alphabet song a nd Tw i n k le, Tw i n k le Little Star have the same tune? Did you just try singing the two songs above? Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog’s face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride; he sticks his head out the window? If we lea r n f rom our m i st a ke s – were t he y really mistakes? Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of wondering.

Purchasing “By Committee” MIKE BUDER One of t he com mon mistakes I see first time homebuyers ma ke is involv ing too ma ny people in their decision ma k ing. Wel l mea n ing f a m i l y, f r i e n d s , a n d c o -w o r k e r s c a n g i v e adv ic e t hat i nter fere s w it h t he home buy i ng process. I found a young couple the perfect home that met all their criteria and more. This particular home was unique because of its location, size, and p r i c e . Un f o r t u n a t e l y, the “buying committee” all had differing points of v ie w. S ome of t he committee members felt the home needed to much repa i r, ot hers t houg ht that the buyers needed to look at more homes and still others wanted them to continue to hunt for the best “deal”. Of course, it’s easy to shop and shop for a home, when you have a home to go back to at the end of the day. As such, this committee was essent ia l ly a pool of ver y u n mot ivated buyers. And any seasoned Rea ltor k nows t hat a n unmotivated buyer is a terrible decision maker. Fu r t her, i f you a sk 10 different people, you are going to get 10 different answers. Tu r n i n g y ou r h om e purchase into the equivalent of an “act of congress” is not really a g reat idea. The buyers
clea rly wa nted t his f i r s t h o m e , h o w e v e r, pleasing the committee pre d ic t abl y prove d to be a n impossible task. I tried to point out the u n ique n at u r e of t he home, but I’m sure my advice sounded like the scream of a teenage girl at a Justin Bieber concert – indiscernible. The end resu lt? They m issed out on a g reat house (which time proved was in fact a tremendous deal!), and we ended up look i ng for homes of f a nd on for a not her si x months. Eventually the com m it tee members tired of reviewing homes w it h t he buyers, a f ter a ll, they couldn’t seem to make a decision. The buyer s d id event ua l ly make a decision (without com m it tee i nput), but later confided that they still drove by that first house t hat got away… ”t he one t hat d ied i n committee”. Financial Advice Column
How Can the “Sandwich Generation” Relieve Financial Stress? BOB KRYGSHELD April is National Stress Awareness Month. Stress can present emotional and physical challenges to all of us, but if you belong to the “sandwich generation” – t hat is, you may be caring for aging parents while still supporting your own children – you may be facing some financial stress as well. What can you do to relieve it? • Suggest “downsizing.” A re you r pa rent s st i l l paying a mortgage on a house that’s now too big for them? They may be emotionally attached to their home, but they might benefit substantia lly if t hey moved someplace that’s less expensive. • Talk to parents about their income sources. Are t hey ma x imi zing t heir Social Security payments? A r e t he y f ol low i n g a sensible w it hdrawa l strateg y for their retirement accounts? You may want to recommend t hat t hey work w it h a q u a l i f ie d f i n a nc i a l professional. • Discuss a ll lega l arrangements. Be aware of your parents’ e s t at e pl a n s a nd t he status of important legal documents – will, living trust, power of attorney, hea lt h c a re d i rec t ive, and so on. When the time arises for any of these a r r a ngement s to t a ke effect, you don’t want to face any unpleasant – and possibly costly – surprises. • Find out about health care. Try to learn about y ou r p a r e nt s’ h e a l t h insurance coverage. And have they done anything to protec t t hem selves f r o m t h e p ot e n t i a l l y catastrophic costs of long-
ter m ca re, such as a n extended nursing home stay? • Don’t ignore your own retirement savings. Even if you can afford to provide some financial support to you r pa rents, don’t s h or t c h a n g e y ou r s e l f when it comes to your own retirement savings. You don’t get a “do-over” to save money for retirement, so contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA and employer-sponsored retirement plan. • Prioritize your investment choices. To help your children go to college, you might want to c on sider a c ol le ge sav ings. Still, you may need to prioritize your investments. After all, your children will likely have a variety of options (loans/ s c hol a r s h ips ) to help them pay for school, and they may also be able to reduce costs by going to a community college their first two years. But you are basically “up against the clock” when it comes to saving for retirement, so you’l l wa nt to ta ke that into account when allocating your investment dollars. B e l o n g i n g t o t h e sa ndw ich generat ion ca n cer ta i n ly produce feelings of anxiety. But by follow ing the above suggestions, you may be able to reduce some of this stress. And by doing so, you can help your parents, y ou r c h i l d r e n – a n d yourself. April 9th, 2017, Calumet City Historical S o c iet y-- Po s s e s si ng a n a l mo s t encyclopedic wealth of information about the forming of The Region” and the South Suburbs churches in the 1700’s and 1800’s Schoon spoke of the earliest residents of the area and t he churches t hey founded. They brought their families, talents, dreams and faith to the wilderness--cleared land and built their own rough hewn homes and their churches in that order. Many of the congregations are still in existence today and boast of ancestors who braved the trials and tribulations to carve out the places of worship that still stand. Schoon wrote a book on the subject and the Munster resident talks about the pioneer life as though he himself had lived it. Going back to the earliest time Schoon spoke about was in the 1600’s, 1675 to be exact when the 1st clergyman Fr. Marquette came to found a church in the area. One by one, many of the Protestant denominations came to the area to settle and build churches-the Methodists,Presbyterians, Dutch Refor med a nd i n t he m id-1800s, Roman Catholics, St. John and St. John the Evangelist (the original log church) which is still located on Indianapolis Boulevard in St. John, Indiana today. The hardship the pioneers faced is a l most u n i mag i nable today. Just getting through a harsh winter was remarkable with their primitive living arrangements. But their devotion to their faith is even more remarkable and they put it on a par with food and shelter. Just listening to Mr. Schoon outline the names and places and where they settled and then thinking about getting around the Region on I 80/94 and our wonderful roads that get us from here to there in minutes today-the pioneers were some sturdy people. Fascinating subject and fascinating speaker. Bravo to the Calumet City Historical Society for bringing our past alive! ***
