South Suburban College Recognizes High School Students At 8th Annual Video Competition South Suburban College (SSC) with the assistance of Career Development System (CDS) hosted the 8th Annual South Suburban College Video Competition on Thursday, April 2, 2015, in the Kindig Performing Arts Center. The competition showcases talent from area high schools as well as provides students with a tour of the college’s facilities, featuring the television studio/control room, audio studio/ control room, and multimedia lab. “The competition is a great opportunity for high school students and their parents to see the new technology we have throughout the facilities,” said SSC Communication Instructor John Geraci. “The turn-out for the event was great and the skill level continues to exceed my expectations every year.” Eight loca l high schools submitted entries to t he competition including Bremen, Eisenhower, Hillcrest, Oak Forest, Richards, Thornton Township, Thornwood, and Tinley Park. Students entered work in seven different categories: Commercial, PSA, Short Subject, Music Video, Creative Editing, News Story or Feature, and News Program. The 61 entries were judged on aesthetic quality, technical quality, program design and overall effectiveness. SSC Assistant Vice President of Academic Services and Institutional Effectiveness Ronald Kawanna, Jr. was inspired by the students’ creativity. “Events like our High School Video contest remind us why we are all here,” Kawanna stated. “Our future will depend on these young students, and our future looks bright if this is a demonstration of things to come.” Handyman: Roof leaks, basement water, also outlets, switches, ceiling fans, light fixtures. Can You Free Yourself from Some Investment Taxes? BOB KRYGSHELD A pr i l 2 4 h a s b e e n designated Tax Freedom Day for 2015 — the day when the nation as a whole has hypothetically earned enough money to pay off its ta x bill for the year. So it may be a good time to think about “freeing” you rself f rom some investment-related taxes. You m ay not m i nd pa y i ng y ou r s h a r e of ta xes because your ta x dol la r s a re u se d i n a variety of ways — such as law enforcement, food safety, road maintenance, public education and so on — that, taken together, have a big impact on the qua l it y of l i fe i n t h i s c ou nt r y. Nonet hele s s, you may well want to look for ways to reduce those t a xe s a s soc iate d w it h your investments, leaving you more money for your important goals. For t u nately, it isn’t rea l ly t hat dif f icu lt to be a t a x-con sc iou s investor, as some of the best retirement-sav ings vehicles have built-in tax advantages. For starters, depending on your income level, your contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible, so the more you put in (up to the ma x imum of $5,500, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older), t he lower you r a n nua l taxable income. Plus, your earnings grow on a taxdeferred basis. If you meet cer ta in income g uidelines, you may be elig ible to contribute to a Roth IRA. Rot h IR A cont r ibut ion limits a re t he sa me as those for a traditional IRA, but the tax treatment of your earnings is different. April 23-24, 9-2.  2456 Indiana St., Lansing.  Furniture, lamps, pictures, clothing, tools. We got it all!

In fact, your Roth earnings can grow tax free, provided you don’t take withdrawals before 59½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. (Roth contributions are not tax-deductible.) Also, contribute to your 401(k), which prov ides t a x- defer r e d e a r n i ng s potential. And employerspon sore d pla n s have much higher contribution limits t ha n a n IR A; in 2015, you can put in up to $18,000 to a 401(k) or similar plan, or $24,000 if you are 50 or older. Avoid frequent buying and selling of investments held outside your IRA and 401(k). Try to hold your i nvest ments at lea st a year before selling them. By doing so, you’ll only have to pay the long-term capital gains rate, which will likely be 15%. If you sell investments you’ve held for less than a year, your gains will be taxed on your individual tax rate. Taking full advantage of your IRA and 401(k) and holding your investments for the long term aren’t the only tax-smart moves you can make — but they can give you a good start on making investing less of a “taxing” experience. Prairie State College Speech Team Wins Gold The Prairie State College Speech Team made history this month during the 2015 Phi Rho Pi National Speech Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio. Team members Allysha Nobles of Park Forest, Patrick Sheard of Dolton, Dan Blewitt of Crete, Colin Gallagher of Homewood and Kelly Crescenzo of Steger were named national champions, winning a gold medal in the small school team sweepstakes in individual events. This marks only the second time in the program’s 15-year history at the national tournament that PSC won this prestigious award. In addition to the team’s success, Nobles, the national team’s only member from last year’s team, brought home a gold medal in prose interpretation. Out of 115 students from 56 schools across the country, she earned a “first place” from 8 of her 9 judges in the preliminary, semi-final and final rounds. She also advanced to the national semi-finals in dramatic interpretation, earning a bronze medal. Freshman Sheard also advanced to the national final round of prose interpretation, winning a silver medal in the event. He also advanced to the national semi-final round

Additionally, Crescenzo earned a spot in the national semi-final round in persuasive speaking, finishing with a bronze medal. And, first-year competitor Gallagher won a spot in the national semi-final round of persuasive speaking, adding another bronze medal to the team’s seven individual awards. Freshman Blewitt said, “Our team’s success is due mostly to the fact that, aside from all the trophies and accolades we earned this season, everyone was more than willing to be a friend, mentor and supporter to each other beyond the speech team. “That’s so important when building a family-oriented program like ours. We all pull for each other to be successful in speech competition and beyond.” The PSC speech team is coached by PSC Professors Josh Green, Dave Naze, Ed Schwarz and Elighie Wilson.

ANNA M. CAISON A re we teeter i ng on t he edge of another civil war? Ga latians 5:15 sumurizes Apost le Paul’s warning to the Gentile and Jewish believers who were vehemently attacking each other in regards to the practice of circumcision. Jewish believers insisted that the Gentiles weren’t full Christians bec au se t hey weren’t ci rc u mci sed. And the Gentile believers insisted the Jew ish believers were pol lut ing t he gospel because they trusted in the law of circumcision above the law of grace through faith in Christ. Paul compared t heir attacks to w ild a nima ls biting each other, and if they continued they would end up devouring (destroying) t hem selves. I n stead of u si ng t hei r freedom to promote their biases, Paul instructed them to love each other as they loved themselves. Following the deaths of two unarmed African-American males (one at his place of employment, and the other, an air force veteran suffering from a non-violent mental episode) by white officers, the Rev. Samuel Mostellar, former president of the Georgia chapter SCLC made the following statement: “You know, the SCLC stands for nonviolence, but nonviolence hasn’t worked in this instance. You stand there, (police) shoot. You run, they shoot. We’re going to have to take a different tack. Nobody is protecting the Black community! I am going to advocate, at this point, that all African-Americans

advocate their 2nd Amendment Rights.” All across America videos are being uploaded to the Internet that shows White Law Enforcement Officers using excessive force in apprehending unarmed African Americans resulting in their deaths. Yesterday I received an email that contained a video of a confrontation between two White police officers and a group of White musicians in a Walmart parking lot. When the officers approached the group they stated they wanted to ask them some questions. Immediately the group attacked the officers, punching them and throwing them to the ground. Not one officer pulled out their gun, instead they called for backup. W hen backup arrived the group attacked them too. No guns were drawn or shots fired until one of the suspects tried to take an officer’s gun. It was at that point a shot was fired killing one suspect and injuring the officer. How is it that these officers didn’t feel threatened even though they were under attack? But in incidents i nvolv i ng u na r med Black su spec t s who are running away from officers or sta nding on t he st reet sel ling loose cigarettes, or sitting in their cars during a traffic stop officers feel threatened and shoot to kill? which has returned to the village and confirms that the Beast is real. Based on the classic fairytale and Disney’s 1991 animated feature film, Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST premiered on Broadway at the Palace Theatre on April 25, 1991, running for over 5000 performances through July 2007 staring Terrance Mann as The Beast, and Susan Eagn as Belle. It was Disney’s first venture adapting one of their animated features films onto a Broadway musical. Now an established practice, Dinsey brought The Lion King (1997), Tarzan (2006), Mary Poppins (2006), The Little Mermaid (2008), Newsies-the Musical (2012), and Aladdin (2014). Disney is also adapting Broadway musicals into live-action films most recently with Into the Woods, and in 2017 Beauty and the Beast featuring Emma Thompson (Harr y Potter) as Belle, Luke Evens (The Hobbit, Dracula Untold) as Gaston, and Dan Stevens (Downton Abby) as the Beast. An ironic coincidence that on April 16, Susan Egan, the original Belle in Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast appeared in concert as part of the Northwest Indiana Concert Association series. Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST will run Thursday, April 30; Friday, May 1; Saturday, May 2 at 7pm, and Sunday, May 3 at 2pm in Munster Auditorium. Tickets are $7 at the door (senior and student tickets $5). Tickets are available at the Auditorium Box Office on performance nights.

Helped Client Despite My Pain

WOODROW WILCOX On Apr i l 13, 2015, I got a call from the office to come to work for an emergency for a client. I was recovering from some surgery and had arranged to take the day off to help w it h my recover y. But, the client’s problem was serious and might be life threatening. Despite my pain, I came to the office to help the client. No one el se at t he of f ice cou ld determine what should be done to help the client. The client had enrolled in a Medicare Part D prescription plan through our agency with a company that advertises regularly in TV ads. On the application, the client marked to give permission to the insurance company to ta ke h is mont h ly payment from his Social Security check. But, that n e v e r h a pp e n e d . T h e client lost his prescription drug coverage because the insurance company never got its money from Social Security. T he c l ie nt le a r ne d of this when he tried to get a ref ill of his heart medication. The bill for a three month supply would be over $300 because he had no i n su r a nce. He contacted the insurance company and paid three mont hs of prem iu m with a credit card. Then, the insurance company refused to reinstate his insurance. It demanded that he apply for a new policy. When the client came to my of f ice, I made a phone call to Medicare to discuss the problem. The client a nd I initiated a GOOD CAUSE REQUEST for an investigation and deter m inat ion to force the insurance company to reinstate his policy. Either Social Security erred by

not sending the monthly draft of payment to the insurance company or the insurance company erred by not properly contacting Social Security to initiate t he mont hly pay ments. But, our client did not cause the problem. To help the client to get medicine the same day, I had a not her member of our staff check w w w. good r x .com. We fou nd places that would sell his heart medication for less than $20 for a one month supply. Remember that he almost paid over $300 for a three month supply of the same medicine. If his insurance is reinstated, he can show the receipts for what he bought after visiting our office and get reimbursement. There are two things t hat I wou ld tel l ot her seniors about this matter. Sometimes, an insurance company that advertises greatly on T V is not so g r e at i n it s c u s tomer service. Spending money on T V ad s i n ste ad of customer service causes problems for sen ior cit i zen clients. Bewa re of insurance companies that spend too much on TV ads. Avoiding A Commission MIKE BUDER Of ten, w hen l ist i ng a for sale by owner (most end up listing), I am asked what happens if someone who ex pressed interest wh i le t he home wa s a FSBO buys after I list the home. My answer is “if they didn’t buy then, but do buy now, then I have done my job”. G et t i ng them to buy is what the agent is paid for. If the seller could get them to buy, they wouldn’t need me. Just because t hey saw it with the owner first doesn’t mean anything. Rea ltors aren’t paid for getting people first, we are paid for getting people to the closing table. In other words, outcome. Results. Upon oc c a sion, I w i l l grant a seller an exclusion on certain buyers. It can be a neighbor, it can be someone who is t r y ing to s el l t hei r home i n order to buy, or any sort of buyer. My exclusions a re not a n exempt ion f rom c om m i s sion a nd here’s why: a n of fer is just a beginning. It takes work and skill to affect a closing. If I charge a seller a 0% commission for an excluded buyer, then it is they who will have to be the agent, not me, because I can’t hold that buyer’s hand for 2-3 months for no compensat ion. If a sel ler wa nts to ha nd le pre-qua lification, offer, negot iat ion, cont ract s, inspections, processing, title and closing on their own, they invite disaster.

I never w a nt to be i n competition with a client, nor do I wa nt to wa it unpaid on the sidelines while t hey engage in a “do it yourself project” on t he biggest transaction of their life to save a few dollars. A saved line item is often at the cost of a lower net and that is not conject u re – it is fact. Realtors perform better than someone selling their own house. Elimination of fees a l l toget her i s pen ny w ise a nd pou nd foolish – too much can go w rong. You wa nt a professional working for you and no professional can work for free. W hat good is “saving” on the com m ission if your t r a n s ac t ion do e sn’t close? There is one rather immutable truth to real estate: if you are paying out a commission check, you are at a closing table. W hich, I believe, is the point. Your closing! BRANDI SMITS The Winner’s Curse By Marie Rutkoski Kestrel is well-known a mongst t he people of the Valorian Empire. As the daughter of General Tr a j a n , K e s t r e l h a s a decision to ma ke about her f ut u re. E it her she c a n ma r r y a n el ig ible gent lem a n a nd s p end her days as a wife or she c a n joi n t he m i l it a r y and follow in her father’s foot steps. It’s not t hat either choice is terribly undesirable. She may not be good at combat, but she has certainly inherited her father’s military cunning. On the other hand, there is worthy suitor in her life. The problem exists in that Kestrel’s time to choose is coming up quickly and she would like to take the time to figure out what she wants. Kest rel add s to her ex ist i ng pred ica ment a f ter st rol l i ng t h roug h the market with her best friend Jess. Kestrel doesn’t approve of t he cu r rent way of life regarding the Valorian people. Years ago, t he Va lor ia ns defeated t he Her r a n i people i n a g reat batt le t hat has left the Herrani in their service. Kestrel and Jess happened to be at t he ma rket du r i ng a slave auction and were pushed with the crowd toward the auction. Kestrel has never purchased a slave before, but there was something a b out t he bl a c k s m it h Arin and the auctioneer’s Altec Lansing speakers $40; plastic CD cases, .25 cent; oak & glass book case $100; George Foreman grill $12. 708-753-0551 D yson bagless vacuum cleaner $90; Craft ornate pet house w/deck & steps carpet $115; 36” movie screen in roll $15. 219-365-8166 Antique school desk, Antique high chair, great condition $25; Antique glass 5 gallon pickle jar, 10 gallon, pottery-whiskey jug. 219365-8166

ment ion of h is love of music t hat ga i ned her a t t e nt i on . B e f or e s h e knew it, Kestrel had bid heav i ly a nd pu rchased him. Arin worked at the forge ma k i ng weapons and shoeing horses, but soon became a companion of Kest rel. He escor ted h e r t o e v e nt s a nd t o t h e m a r k e t . K e s t r e l’s previous choice between ma r r iage a nd m i l it a r y was in more complicated with the addition of Arin, the Herrani slave. When Kestrel purchased Arin, a woma n in t he crowd mentioned the warning of the winner’s curse. The w inner’s curse appea rs when someone w ins an auc t ion a f t e r bidd i n g a n e x c e s s i v e a mou nt . Th ings seems good for now, but there is trouble on t he hor i zon. W i l l Kestrel succumb to t he misfortune of the curse? Rutkoski tells a classic story of that has been told over and over throughout h i s t o r y. O n e n a t i o n overpowers another and t he chaos t hat fol low s sta r ts a not her con f l ict br e w i n g . K e s t r e l i s a fantastic, strong female character who craves to make her own decisions in her life and unfortunately funnels that frustration into purchasing a slave. The relationship between Kestrel and Arin is a bit cliché, but the drama that results it is surprising. This is the first book in a new series.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

Answer: You definitely need to know what you need vs. what you want. Before you even think about hitting an open house or looking at homes with your Realtor, you need to know what you are looking for. Otherwise, you may find yourself falling in love with something impractical, or worse, sweet-talked into placing an offer on a home that doesn’t fit your needs. Start by sitting down together with a pen and paper and write down two columns: “Needs” and “Wants.” Under ne ed s, l i st you r nonnegotiables. For example, if you have a grow ing family, you may need t hree bedrooms, two baths and a fenced-in yard for the dog. A 2 car garage for those cold, snowy winters. Under wants, put your wish list. Maybe you crave a gourmet kitchen or a large master bedroom with a private bath. These are things you can live without, but life would be nicer if you had them.
