“Back to Books” Grants Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has awarded more than $1 million in “Back to Books” grants to 230 Illinois libraries to acquire fiction and/or non-fiction books, learning CDs and DVDs and other educational materials. “I am pleased to be able to award these grants that will allow library users to be better educated and entertained,” said White. “Our libraries perform so many essential tasks, but at their core what our libraries do best is make books and other materials available to patrons.” Libraries submitted applications specifying the types of books and other materials they would purchase if they received funding. These include: • Building collections in women’s studies and sociology • Health sciences books for nursing students • Books and other materials to help veterans make the transition from military to civilian life • DVDs to provide training to firefighters • New materials in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and craftsmanship subjects • Cultural, geographical and travel books and DVDs • Spanish language fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs, and audiobooks • Large-print books for senior citizens on topics related to retirement such as health, hobbies, finances, technology and travel Awards range from $2,500 to $5,000 per library and are made possible by a combination of funds from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services and state of Illinois library funds. World Red Cross Day is May 8 May 8 marks World Red Cross Day, as well as the birthday of Henry Dunant, the founder of what is known today as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Dunant was a young Swiss businessman who advocated for the humane treatment of wartime sick and wounded. Dunant witnessed atrocities in 1859 during a bloody battle in Solferino, Italy, and organized local people to come to the aid of injured soldiers. Upon his return to Geneva, Dunant called for the creation of national volunteer relief societies to assist during wartime. His work pointed the way to the future Geneva Conventions, and the formation of Red Cross societies worldwide, including the American Red Cross. “We encourage everyone to help continue his legacy and help people in need, wherever they are,” said Sharyn Whitman, CEO for the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. “Coming to donate blood to help hospital patients who need it for surgeries, cancer care, or to treat lifethreatening accidents is one way you can help.” The American Red Cross is among more than 180 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world

devoted to alleviating human suffering wherever it is found. The Red Cross works with partner societies in almost 200 countries which collectively assist more than 200 million beneficiaries each year. 50 Years and Still a Hit Fifty plus years ago the idea of an all girls softball team for the Town of Dyer was forming at the kitchen table in the home of Frankie Blaize, founder of Dyer Girls Softball. Little did she know the struggle she would face to get Dyer Girls Softball off the ground! After several years of attending town meetings and being told that the girls should be cheerleaders for the boys on the little league team she was given approval to start Dyer Girl’s Softball at Northgate Park. Garrett’s Neighborhood Elections are over, Votes Cast, Candidates are selected

During the past three months I have pointed out many problems that cast a dark cloud over our community and affect all residents. The voters have spoken and a new administration will take direction of our town. In order for Dolton to reverse 16 years of bad administration and lack of any proactive development the new Elected officials need the support and input of all citizens and businesses. Plus a good working relationship with our surrounding communities to bring Dolton back to the village we used to have and were proud to live in. During this campaign many promises were made and accountability will be on the front page. Every resident and business will expect nothing less to honor the new level of commitment. Kiana Belcher and myself, Garrett Ghezzi, would also like to give special thanks for all the support, from neighbors, friends and supporters who believed in us during this time. It takes people that believe in your vision and dedication to back a campaign; we were truly blessed to have this support.

I do have one final thought that needs to be addressed. When an election is held the decisions you make to elect officials will directly affect your life, in the public safety, fire, Police Protection, education, Youth Programs, Property Taxes, business and jobs in the community. Also, prospective future expansion and insurance rates on property are a few others. So why is it that a town of over 17,000 registered voters and only roughly 3000 come out to vote. People are elected into an office with as little as 18% of total vote. Without your vote you have no say and in return you have nothing to complain about. Residents need to be informed and take responsibility for your community. Every vote counts and as a citizen, take advantage and use it. This is what leads a town, state or nation to either loose control or stay on the right path. Together we can achieve any goal. Garrett’s neighborhood will occasionally return to make sure we stay focused and on track. Thanks again for all your support and hopefully in the future also.

Former Bulldog Cingrani earns first MLB Victory

Former South Suburban College pitcher Tony Cingrani (6’4”, LHP, Lincolnway Central) earned his first major league win last night as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Florida Marlins 11-1. Cingrani pitched five innings allowing one run and striking out eight. He was just called up this week to join the Reds’ starting rotation. The 24 year-old Cingrani played for the Bulldogs from 2008-09 and holds the SSC record for most career strikeouts with 194. Following his 2009 season with the Bulldogs, Cingrani transferred to Rice University where he pitched for the perennial powerhouse Owls for two years. In 2011, Cingrani was drafted in the third round by the Reds, and in 2012 he was called up to the big leagues at the end of the year to pitch out of the bullpen. His next start will be next week against the Chicago Cubs. 6th Annual Video Competition South Suburban College (SSC) and Career Development System (CDS) hosted the 6th Annual South Suburban College Video Competition on Thursday, April 11, 2013, in the Kindig Performing Arts Center. We also received about 30 more entries than last year, so it’s great to see the growth in the competition.” In addition to the student awards, high schools competed among each other for the Regional Award of Distinction. Children & Adults With Disabilities Learn To Ride Horses In the town of Hobart, there is an organization that has been helping to make a difference in the lives of its students since 1979. Exceptional Equestrians Unlimited (E.E.U.) is an organization that helps children and adults with disabilities learn to ride horses. It was started by Mary Jane Wilk, who was a parent of a child with a disability. The Wilk wanted her child to have a different form of therapy and socialization. She sought out a local stable owner, and started Exceptional Equestrians Unlimited. Cameron Cox is a 12 year old boy who is currently a student at Exceptional Equestrians Unlimited. His parents found out about the program through a friend who works at the barn. While Cameron is having lots of fun riding the horses, he is also getting therapy in a fun way. The riding helps his posture, and to strengthen his muscles in other parts of his body. The therapy also works on balance, hand-eye coordination, muscle strength, memory and more with all students. The students are also quizzed on the anatomy of the horse and the terminology of the riding equipment. Cameron has been a student at E.E.U. for four years. Cameron wasn’t scared

or nervous when starting E.E.U., but his mother was, “I was really nervous about him being so high up, but then I saw how great the staff and volunteers were (during lessons), I realized they have it under control and make the lessons fun.” Paula Cox said. Cameron participates in all three riding sessions offered each year; Spring, Summer, and Fall. In the Winter, he takes a break from everything because in addition to riding horses, he also plays baseball and does a lot of swimming. “The swimming is also very therapeutic for him,” Paula said. “In the Winter he doesn’t go through withdrawal from the horses, because he actually enjoys having a break from being busy all the time,” Paula said. “E.E.U. is great for all of us. Cameron is happy riding and it is a good form of therapy for him. He also gets to socialize with the other students, and we get to socialize with other parents,” Paula said. I recently watched the movie “Hitchcock”. It was about the making of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film, “Psycho”. The movie was entertaining and very well acted. In the movie, Alfred Hitchcock (Hitch to his friends) had an idea for the final movie he owed Paramount Studios in his contract. He wanted to make a movie of the book “Psycho”. Everyone seemed to be against him. The executives at Paramount thought it was a bad idea and refused to finance the project. The Motion Picture Organization did not want to grant him a permit to show the film in the United States. His group of betareaders, friends whom were privy to a pre-reading of the screenplay, was disgusted by it. His wife, though she respected his judgment, tried to sway him into an alternative project. No one liked Hitchcock’s idea. He, however, never lost faith in his vision. He had it in his mind that he could create something great from this novel. To Alma’s (Mrs. Hitchcock) dismay, Alfred alerted her to the fact that they must risk everything they own… putting everything they had worked years to achieve on the line, mortgaging the house in order to finance the production of Psycho. Hitch faced one obstacle after another, taking whatever action was necessary in order to bring his vision to fruition, allowing nothing to stand

Eventually, Hitch’s internal and external conflicts may have gotten the best of him. The movie he made was far below his standards. At this point he realized he had failed at more than just making the movie. At this point he recognized what his wife meant to him, and what he had neglected to bring to their relationship. At this point, Hitch asked for Alma’s help…in a way that made her feel what she had wanted to feel all along. She only longed to know Hitch respected her for who she was. When Hitch asked, Alma responded…and the two of them worked together to cut the acclaimed movie “Psycho”. Alfred Hitchcock had a remarkable talent, yet recognized when he needed help. He knew who could help him and he asked nicely. On another level, he realized how turmoil in his marital relationship affected him mentally and realized he needed his other half to make him whole once again. REVIEW: One day, people will look back and remember a time when Tom Cruise was one of the most bankable of stars, a time before Oprah’s couch and a string of so-so flicks diminished his luster. Occasionally we are reminded still of his natural ability to hold the attention of his audience, and so it is with ‘Oblivion’, a science fiction film full of recycled ideas that remains utterly watchable throughout. Cruise is Jack Harper, maintenance man on a destroyed earth, tasked with repairing the security drones that defend the energy mining apparatus of humanity’s last hope. An Invasion and war have left Earth essentially uninhabitable, and the remaining folk need the energy to power the new colony on Titan, the largest of Saturn’s moons. The invading scavengers (‘scavs’) are a constant threat, but Jack will find more than he’d imagined when his curiosity about his mission takes hold. For anyone familiar with

science fiction there will be few surprises, although it is clearly intended that the audience uncover each new piece of the puzzle as Jack does. There are ideas here that are explored in many recent and not-sorecent sci-fi films, and in many cases those films do it better. The most obvious is Moon, the remarkable film directed by Duncan Jones in 2009, yet there are innumerable references scattered throughout. The outstanding thing about ‘Oblivion’, however, is that the familiarity of the themes and the lack of surprise at the turns taken by the plot still don’t diminish the enjoyment of the film. Much of the credit must go to the production design and visual effects, as this is just a beautiful film to look at. Audiences will be thrilled by the depiction of a ruined world, and the action sequences featuring Harper in his flying machine are as exciting as they come. This is truly a film to see on the big screen, and the bigger the better. ‘Oblivion’ sees Cruise at the top of his game, and it is his charisma that is the other factor in the film’s success. He really sells the action and intrigue, and it is impossible to remain unmoved both by Harper’s plight and Cruise’s skill in making us care. The best of science fiction explores humanity and its foibles, and while ‘Oblivion’ isn’t a genre-redefining piece, and it doesn’t say anything profound, it remains one of the better of recent screen sci-fi thrillers. When Life Throws A Curve Ball Anna M. Caison

If anyone had told me 10 years ago that I’d be single, uprooted from my home, and raising a grand-daughter, I would not have believed it. I thought at this age with our children long gone having established lives of their own, we’d (my ex and I) be enjoying retirement while sharing and doing ministry together. And that’s just the short lists of curve balls thrown at my carefully laid plans. Life is full of curve balls–unexpected changes to our plans that leave us in a state of shock, confusion, and despair. So, what do you do when life throws you a curve ball? Take your stance in the Word of God and hit a home run! The word that Isaiah spoke to Israel is relevant to us today–No weapon (curve ball) formed against us can defeat us or knock us out (Isa. 54:17). I hadn’t planned on being divorced but it happened. Does being divorced mean I’ve become devalued, that I’m no longer a whole person? Absolutely not! My worth and wholeness isn’t linked to having a husband,

it’s in being in relationship with Christ. My life is different, but not defeated. Nor is it void of purpose and fulfillment. I hit that curve ball and made a home run! Getting back into the game of parenting wasn’t as hard as I had envisioned. I was striking out for a while because I kept looking at it as a hindrance to what I thought I should be doing at this stage in my life. But when I looked at this curve ball through the purposes of God, I hit a home run. What curve balls have life thrown at you; unemployment, underemployment? Don’t strike out by succumbing to despair? Take your stance in the risen Christ and hit a home run! He has promised to meet every need (Matt. 6:33). In Him we are more than conquerors---home runs are guaranteed! Demonstrations of the Van De Graff generators, plasma ball, and Tesla coils created “hair raising” experiences for 150 students in the fourth through eighth grades of Calvary. The van is an 18-wheeler mobile classroom staffed by U.S. Army soldiers and Department of Army civilian personnel that travels across the country presenting programs designed to show young people that studying science is fun as well as essential to their future. American composers and lyricists Kern and Harbach wrote “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” in 1933 yet it remains popular today—many musicians have covered the song vocally and instrumentally. I personally remember performing this song with Johnny Mathis on stage in the 1980s and it struck at the core of my life experience. The song simply reveals the real way we can be blinded in any relationship (the song refers to romantic love) in the beginning, and hurt in that same relationship in the end. This honest truth applies to almost any relationship: friendship, love interest, family, and of course, professional colleagues. The gist is that we see and believe what we want, we live as if it were so, and we are disappointed when it doesn’t turn out our way. Sound familiar? In the professional world this occurs all too often. Insufficient communication, false assumptions, and wounded emotions can lead to failures at all levels. So I thought I would show you a few tricks that you can use to make sure that you don’t get sticker shock when you show up to your closing. These tips can help keep you in the know.

Before you do that, stop and think about the 3 primary factors that make up the reasons why one house sells and another doesn’t. These are price, presentation and marketing. And YOU control 2 out of those 3 factors. PRICE: When your agent recommended a price, did you listen? Or did you insist on a higher price for some reason? And if the market has changed since you listed, have you adjusted your price? Sellers – be honest with yourself, and look at the numbers your agent and consumer friendly websites are telling you. PRESENTATION: Did you get your house ready to show, or do you need to clean, de-clutter, de-personalize and do some fix-up or paint-up? Did you clean up or fix up your yard and the homes exterior for curb appeal, or does it look neglected? Do you keep your home in showing condition at all times or are visitors apt to find unmade beds, dirty dishes and wet towels on the bathroom floor? Or worse – a smelly litter box or garbage can? Is the house available during all the hours when buyers might want to see

it, or do you limit showing hours and demand 48 hours notice? All of these factors are under your control. Have you done your part? MARKETING: This is your agent’s job… and so is cooperating with other agents who might want to show your home. If you’ve done your part in pricing and presentation, then check the marketing. Look at your listing in the MLS and ask to see other places where your home is advertised. See if the photos and descriptions are appealing. See if all the information is accurate. If you’re not getting showings from other agents, talk with your agent and find out why. If he or she is falling down on the job, then yes, you may need to fire your agent. Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE alice DEVRIES The name “Marjorie” is like my family heirloom. It basically came over on the boat with my ancestors from Holland. By the time I came along, they nicknamed me Margie, or Marge. However, when that ridiculous 1980’s Pee-Wee Herman movie botched the name with scary trucker “Large Marge”—I had enough teasing from school to last me a lifetime. Kevin (my hubby) thinks this is hilarious, and so he likes to call me “Marge.” Back in WWII, Sgt. Robert Buetow nicknamed his wife “Lu”. ‘It Takes a Village Community Garden’ Planned for the Dorchester Senior Center

The Village of Dolton and volunteers for the “It Takes a Village: Community Garden” will host their first planting day on Saturday, May 11th starting at 10a.m. at The Dorchester Senior Center. Dolton has partnered with UIC’s Project CEED (Center of Excellence in the Elimination of Disparities) and Robinson Engineering to launch the “It Takes a Village: Community Garden Initiative.” The project works to replace abandoned, dilapidated homes and lots with urban community gardens that provide sustainable food for those in need, increase a sense of community and partnership, while also beautifying crumbled spaces that are both safety and health risks. The first garden, at the Dorchester Center, will open with a community celebration on May 31st 2013. Volunteers will work to prep the garden on its first gardening day, May 11th.
