Right to Life Banquet Lake County Right to Life will host its 44th annual fundraising banquet on Friday, May 19, at the Avalon Manor in Merrillville. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and conclude at 9 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Andrew Mullally, M.D., of Credo Family Medicine in Fort Wayne. Dr. Mullally will address the topic of euthanasia, specifically physicianassisted suicide, and its impact on society. “I feel compelled to resist the push for physician-assisted suicide because it not only undermines the moral legitimacy and fundamental ethic of the practice of medicine, but also grossly marginalizes the vulnerable in our society,” said Dr. Mullally. “I firmly believe that as a physician it is my duty to fight against this for the good of my patients and our country.” Attendees will receive dinner, dessert, and be invited to help support pro-life efforts in Northwest Indiana. The banquet is LCRTL’s primary fundraising event, and serves to reach out to new donors and sponsors, as well as recognize outstanding achievements within the pro-life community. Seats are available for both organizational sponsors and individual donors. Gifts are appreciated, and can be made one time or monthly. Ad space in the program book is available to sponsors and underwriters. Requests for ads must be received by May 10. The registration deadline is May 12. Reserve your seats today by calling the LCRTL office at (219) 838-1138 or via email to office@lakecortl.org Don’t miss the opportunity to learn about this critical issue of our time, and how it can affect all of us.

Night of Song
By Clair Boone, Mummy Deals When my friends made me the Coconut Honey Scr ub for Christmas one yea r I was hooked! I have found that homemade recipes are often the best as they cost less and are not full of toxic ingredients like many other products. Not only does this one smell amazing but it’s easy to make and easy on the wallet. With Mother’s Day right around the corner I wanted to share my recipe! About once a month skin cells are shed for new ones and while the body can do this use a sugar scrub or salt scrub can help remove the old cells which is why scrubs are so popular at beauty spas to remove dead skin cells, refresh and rejuvenate skin. Alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs, are the ingredient in exfoliating scrubs. Sugar is used because the glycolic acid found in sugar cane is a naturally occurring AHA. Coconut oil is really good for your skin and therefore a great ingredient in beauty products. This Coconut Honey Scrub is for

your face or hands or even your whole body. Simply mix the ingredients together and then when you gift it or use it add an amount about the size of a pea onto your hands and scrub. Materials • 1/2 cup of sugar • 1/4 cup of coconut oil + 1-2 TBS • 1 TBS honey • Small mason jars • Cupcake holders or fabric • Twine Directions 1. Mix the ingredients together. Add the extra tablespoons of coconut oil if needed. 2. Spoon some into a small mason jar. 3. Top if off with a cupcake wrapper and some twine ready for gifting! Question: I negotiated the purchase of a condo, downstate from here recently, and closed about a month ago. Most of the units in the complex are unsold. I happened to be on the Internet the other day and saw that the builder has now reduced the asking price of similar units in the complex by $35,000. I did not pay full price -- they met my offer by reducing the price about halfway and made up the rest with seller’s credits which I took at closing in various ways. Their rationale for this approach was to “keep the comps up” (my official purchase price was just under that of the last buyer -- so there was a pattern of keeping the comps up). This maybe a silly question -- but I have to ask: Do I have any recourse against them for dealing with me in bad faith? They had to have been planning this huge reduction for a while.

Answer: A builder is simply a seller. Like any seller, the builder wants as much as possible from every sale. You bargained with the builder and obtained a number of concessions. These concessions must have been attractive, otherwise you would

never have purchased the unit. But, markets change. A good deal today may not be so good tomorrow. To see if you were treated unfairly, let’s try the “good for the goose, good for the gander” test. Imagine that the value of the unit soared $50,000 within a month after buying. Would you have gone back to the builder and said, “help me out, I should be paying you more for this unit so let’s renegotiate so I can give you more money.” Just a guess, but I don’t think so. As to maintaining comps, the builder is right. The builder has multiple units to sell. He or she wants to maintain prices to maximize future sale values and to keep recent buyers happy with their purchase. If roles were reversed you would have the same strategy.

The BLT ARLO KALLEMEYN O ne of t he f a v or it e sandwiches in my house is the BLT. In my opinion, t he BLT is t he world’s most perfect sandwich. In the summertime, they are even better. It’s quite a simple sandwich for how delicious it tastes. You build this sandwich with sliced, ga rden r ipened tomatoes, crisp iceberg lettuce and Oscar Mayer Applewood smoked bacon on t wo l ig ht ly toasted wheat bread slices – and finish with a thin spread of Hellman’s mayonnaise. In my house, you ca n also add salami, ham and turkey, a slice of American and Sw iss cheese from Walt’s deli, along with a generous dab of French’s Classic yellow mustard. I’m not sure who invented the BLT. ‘but they should be honored in t he Sandwich Hall of Fame somewhere. This wonderful sandwich depends on t he one appl ia nc e t h at proba bl y sit s on t he c ou nt e r of e v e r y home in America – the toaster. I have a love/ hate relat ionsh ip w it h m y t o a s t e r. It n e v e r seems to do the one job it was created for w ith a ny consistenc y. From one day to the next you expect the toast would turn out the same golden brown color. Well, not in my house. Even thought the dark and light knob is not touched or fiddled with, this toaster always surprises us with either a raw slice of bread, or a black cha rcoa l coated squa re of w ho k now s what. W hen we a re s u r pr i s e d w it h bu r nt toast, the trust y butter knife come out and the black coating is scraped off because that’s what we did growing up. Nothing was wasted and, “Don’t you know that there are hungry kids somewhere that don’t even have one slice of burnt toast for dinner?” Our toaster is a fourslice model, however only
two of the slots work. Yes, this is messed up - but it gets worse. The handle that lowers the toast into the toaster will randomly refuse to stay in the down posit ion. Of cou rse, t he coi ls w i l l not heat up unless the handle is down. The other evening I had a revelation. What if I stand over the toaster a nd h old t h e h a nd le dow n until the toast is done? Well, some of you have probably tried this already and know that it works perfectly. It a lso gave me t ime to say a few choice words to this wor t h less appl ia nce that is supposed to toast bread w it hout adu lt supervision. After a few moments (that felt longer than it really was) I got to t hink ing about how bread was toasted back in t he pioneer days. It probably included steps like gathering k indling sticks, starting the fire that had gone out in the night, letting the fire burn dow n to coa ls, f inding just the right forked stick to hold the bread that had been baked from scratch the day before, toasting the bread and finding the butter knife to scrape off the burnt charcoal – all this just to enjoy a piece of toast. My toa ster w it h t he ha nd le t hat won’t stay dow n now seemed like a modern technological marvel. You can just hear t he pioneer tel ling his young wife, “Looky here at this new gadget that I bought you honey! You just drop t he bread in and be sure to stand right here and hold this handle down, and in just a few minutes we will have a per fect slice of golden brown toast! I’ll kill the hog a nd smoke s ome bacon, wh i le you pick the tomatoes and lettuce i n t h e g a r d e n . We’ l l have BLT’s for d i n ner tomorrow!” Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of modern technology.

Program To Help Pregnant Women Quit Smoking Mental Health America of Lake County (MHALC), a nonprofit prevention and early intervention agency, is trained and certified to offer Baby & Me – Tobacco Free Programtm, a program aimed at helping pregnant women quit smoking. “According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), we must encourage pregnant smoking women to consider a quit attempt,” Renae Vania Tomczak, MHALC President & CEO said. “Baby & Me Tobacco Free Program is researchbased and proven to help pregnant women quit smoking and maintain smoking cessation throughout the postpartum period and beyond. The greatest gift a woman can give her baby is a tobacco-free pregnancy and a tobacco-free home.” Laurie Adams, Baby & Me Tobacco Free executive director and program creator, provided technical support and training to MHALC, certifying more than 60 staff members to enroll women into the program and provide the valuable education to help pregnant women quit. “Mental Health America of Lake County is a perfect fit for the program,” Adams said. “They provide services to a large number of prenatal women and they support their quit attempts.” Pregnant women who enroll in the program receive counseling support and resources to help them quit smoking. Upon successfully quitting and staying quit, enrolled participants are eligible for free diapers, two during the prenatal period and one per month for up to 12 months following the birth of their baby, if they remain tobacco-free.
Laurie Adams, BABY & ME Tobacco Free Program founder and Carolyn Runge, Indiana State Department of Health Maternal Health Administrator (back row, 3rd and 4th from left) joined members of the Mental Health America of Lake County team after completing their tobacco cessation training to improve health outcomes for women and babies. ________________________________________
“This program employs cessation methods and guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and its effectiveness has been documented through research,” Adams said. “We are thrilled to be working with Mental Health America of Lake County to help pregnant women in their community.” Tobacco use during pregnancy is a known cause of birth

defects, premature births, underweight babies and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Quitting greatly reduces health risks to both the mother and baby. “Smoking during pregnancy is a proven risk factor for going into preterm labor and delivering a low birth-weight baby,” said Jeena Siela, Maternal and Child Health Director for March of Dimes Indiana. “Indiana has one of the highest smoking rates during pregnancy in the country in 2015. 15.1% of women smoked during pregnancy in our state.” The program, conducted at both MH ALC offices, is generously funded by the Indiana State Department of Health and March of Dimes. Their goal is to enroll at least 50 pregnant smoking women into the program. The program is currently in 18 states, with over 10,000 women enrolled nationwide. “Currently, no other organization in Lake County is working to reduce this rate through an evidence-based cessation program,” Siela said. “Therefore, we’re extremely happy to be providing funding for the Baby & Me Tobacco Free Program that will be implemented through Mental Health America of Lake County. We look forward to working with this organization to give every baby in Lake County a fighting chance.” If you would like information about the program, please contact Mental Health America of Lake County at (219) 9377733, ext. 200.

ANNA M. CAISON On April 19, I became 62 years old. It’s been a long journey, yet short. As I look back over my life, I can truly say that I’ve lived a full and abundant life. W hat I lacked in riches, was made up in knowing and experiencing the True and Living God. No one can tell me that the Lord does not exist for I know He is. The earliest memory I have of the Lord is at age 6 when He visited me in a dream. My back yard had become a battlefield with exploding bombs and army tanks firing on each other from opposite ends of the yard. The Lord came on a cloud to the 2nd floor window where I stood and helped me climb aboard with Him and an angel and took me away. At age 20 He called me to preach the gospel, it came to pass 12 years later. One year before its fulfillment, at age 31, the Lord invited me to leave the familiar and join Him and Abraham on a journey to a place I had never been before. God’s Word has been “a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” He has
guided me through the storms of life, held me together when I felt alone and frighten, and made it possible for me to walk on water with Him in ministry. Each experience and every adventure has strengthened my faith and enabled me to see others through His eyes of grace, mercy and forgiveness. There’s a song (w r itten by A nd re` Crouch) that comes to mind on this day. It says, “How can I say thanks for all the things you’ve done for me? Things so underserved, yet you gave to prove your love for me. The voices of a million angels cannot compare my gratitude. For all that I am and ever hope to be, I owe it all to thee. To God be the glory, to God be the glory. To God be the glory for the things He has done.” Thank You, LORD, in Jesus’ name, Amen. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

BOB KRYGSHELD Ta x F r e e d o m D a y genera l ly fa l ls a rou nd t h i s t i m e e a c h y e a r. This is the day when the nat ion as a whole has ea r ned enoug h money to pay off its total tax bill for the year, according to the calculations made by the Tax Foundation. So you may want to use Tax Freedom Day to t hin k about ways you ca n l iberate you rsel f f rom some of the investmentrelated ta xes you may incur. Of course, Tax Freedom D a y i s s om e t h i n g of a f ict ion, i n pract ica l ter ms, because most people pay t heir ta xes throughout the year via payroll deductions. Also, you may not mind paying y ou r s h a r e o f t a x e s , because your tax dollars are used in many ways – law enforcement, food safety, road maintenance, public education, and so on – that benefit society. St i l l, you may be able to reduce t hose ta xes a s s o c i at e d w it h y ou r investments, leaving you more money available to help you work toward your important goals, such as a comfortable retirement. H e r e are some suggestions for making investing less “taxing”: • Contribute regularly to tax-advantaged retirement plans. Contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA and your employers p on s or e d r et i r ement pla n . Tr ad it iona l I R A earnings grow ta x defer red, a nd your contributions may be taxdeductible, depending on your income. (Taxes will be due upon withdrawal, however, and withdrawals made before you turn 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) Your 401(k) or similar plan also provides the opportunity for taxdeferred earnings growth.

Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but your earnings are distributed ta x-f ree, prov ided you don’t take w ithdrawals u nt i l you’re 59½ a nd you’ve had your account at least five years. • Fol low a “bu y-a ndhold” strategy. If you sell investments you’ve owned for less than a year, and their value has increased, you w i l l h ave to pay capital gains taxes at your personal income tax rate, which, in early 2017, could be as high as 39.6%. But if you hold investments for at least a year before selling them, you’d be assessed the long-term capital gains rate, which tops out at 20%. • C on sider mu n ic ipa l bonds – If you are in one of t he h ig her i nc ome bracket s, you m ig ht benef it f rom invest ing i n mu n icipa l bonds, which a re t y pica l ly used to f inance public projects, such as roads, school s, a i r por t s a nd i n f r a st r uc t u re-relate d repairs. Interest payments from “munis” are typically exempt f rom federa l income taxes. W hen cha r t i ng you r i n v e s t m e n t s t r a t e g y, consider your risk tolerance, time horizon, family situation and estate plans. But investmentrelated taxes should also be in your strategic mix – so look for opportunities to keep these taxes under control. MIKE BUDER The spr ing ma rket is here ! Potent ia l buyers are receiving income tax returns that in some cases equate to down payments. However, many first time home buyers seeking preapprovals are finding that their credit (FICO) scores are slightly sub-par for a mortgage approval. Unfortunately, a person with a bad credit score is often in this position because he or she lacks t he d i s c ipl i ne to pa y bills on time. Of course, t here a re except ions where unforeseen ci rcu msta nces come into play, such as health complications, or loss of employment. There are a few things that may be able to bring your score up so that you can either qualify for or secure a better interest rate on your mor tgage loan. Example 1: Distribute debt from revolving credit. Our borrower, Mr. Jones, has a credit score of 664. He has five credit cards, but h i s V i s a a c c ou nt i s a l most m a x e d out . H i s ot her fou r c r e d it ca rds have relat ively low balances. Mr. Jones moves part of the debt f rom t he Visa accou nt to the other major credit ca rd accou nt s, t hus d i s t r i but i n g t he de bt more evenly over the five cards. This changes the ratio of debt to available credit (which has a 30% i mpact on t he overa l l credit score) and Mr. Jones successf u l ly ra ises h is
credit score by 20 points with very little effort. E x a mple 2 : Tr a n sfer out s t a nd i n g b a l a nc e s to new accou nt s. Ou r borrower, Mr. Smith, has on ly t wo cred it ca rds, but both are pushing the limit of available credit. Mr. Smith opens two new c r e d it c a rd ac c ou nt s, each with a credit limit of $5,000. He transfers part of his existing balances to t he ne w ac c ou nt s. W hile he has acquired two new cards that have no established histor y, the greater impact is the change in the ratio of debt to available credit. Ultimately, experts say that it is best to have three to five credit cards, and no more than that. You should keep your balances as low as possible. If you have a credit account with a zero ba la nce, do not close the account. Instead, make a small purchase so the card shows up as an active account on your cred it repor t, a nd you w ill be awarded points for your long-term credit history. WOODROW WILCOX On April 4, 2017, a client brought a bill to my office and asked me for help. The bill was from an x-ray firm. It sought $160 for two x-rays taken last year. The client is a woma n from Highland, Indiana. I noted on the bill that it claimed that insurance w a s de n ie d on t he s e services. I suspected that statement was false and it was. I phoned t he client’s Me d ic a r e s upplement insura nce compa ny to learn what it knew of these claims. It reported that Medicare never sent these claims to it. Then, with our client, I phoned Medicare to learn about these claims. According to the Medicare representative, the x-ray firm never filed the claims w it h Me d ic a re at a l l . That is a serious error or fraud. A medical firm that contracts with Medicare must file the claim with Me d ic a re i n a t i mel y manner and not directly t o t he s e n ior c it i z e n patient. I wrote a letter to the x-ray f irm to inform it of the problem and told them not to bill our client any more until it had fixed the problem and followed

correct procedure. Thus, I saved our client from paying a false $160 bill. He is a 15 year veteran of working in Chicago Steel Mills now shuttered and is devoted to bringing the best parts of those long gone jobs back to life via workforce renovation and innovation. In another photo, a group of students are in an actual simulated manufacturing setting learning how machinery, large and small, works. The educational environment at Purdue is breathtaking. There are grants available to help anyone with a great idea succeed. There is retraining for disabled veterans, and training of every sort for those who are not cut out for traditional college courses. There are offices available for innovators and workshops starting on June 13, 2017. This is the future. If the educators at Purdue have their way, there will be no need to fear the future and job security. They are there to train us to provide our own job security. For more information contact Rick R. Starting on the church concourse where the collected prayers a nd pet it ions a re bu r ned i nto g ray smoke and sent curling in the twilight to heaven, Pastor Administ rator Fr. Charles Watkins and Ron Segvich watch the embers die down while inside the faithful, with lit candles wait for the centuries old traditional ceremony to begin.
