On Friday, April 26th, South Suburban Housing Center, the regional fair housing enforcement and housing counseling organization serving the south suburbs since 1975, commemorated National Fair Housing Month by presenting its 2013 Fair Housing Achievement Awards at its 38th Anniversary Reception. Patricia Mahon, Deputy Village Administrator for the Village of South Holland, will be the sole recipient of the award this year. Ms. Mahon is being honored for her service devoted to advancing the principles of diversity and inclusion in municipal and regional housing, employment, social, economic, and cultural programs and activities. Past award winner, and newly elected Congresswoman for the 2nd District of Illinois, Robin Kelly, also appeared to speak on housing policy. Patricia Mahon is being honored for 12 years of devoted public service to her community and the Chicago Southland. In the Village of South Holland, she was

A challenge that faces most churches is to have a clear, defined and agreed upon vision. Some may even confuse a vision statement with a mission statement. How can one tell the difference? The best way to understand the difference; a mission statement is what are we about, while a vision statement answers the question “What is our desired future?” Without the vision and mission statement clearly defined members of a church operate out of their own needs and wants. For some the purpose of the church is to allow me to live in the past. I love the church when it renews my sweet memories of my childhood. Others believe the church is there to please them. Hammer Toes

Marvin Alvarez is the first member of his family to attend college, work parttime and plans to graduate this spring from Ivy Tech in Michigan City. The Hobart resident graduated from Hobart High School in 2010. Since then, Marvin was unable to build a resume because he was lacking work experience because he focused primarily on school. Alvarez heard of WorkOne through International Community Alliance of East Chicago. He had been in close contact with them due to his background. The organization is the force behind his current education studying medical technology at Ivy Tech. He sought out help in writing his resume. He had never written one and has never worked because of his hectic school schedule. “I did not know where to even begin with my resume. Everyone needs help every now and then. District 205 Thornton Township named 2012-2013 Regional Recipient for Outstanding Service by a High School

Recently, the Illinois Institute of Technology’s, Technology Park, the top Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana area high schools participating in the Jefferson Awards for Public Service Students in Action Program attended the Jefferson Awards Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Spring Regional Competition. The schools voluntarily competed for regional distinctions based upon their accomplishments in service and volunteerism, specifically how they have implemented the seven program goals of Students in Action throughout the school year, by presenting to a panel of adult and peer judges. Thornton Township High Schools, District 205, Thornwood, Thornton and Thornridge from south suburban South Holland, Harvey and Dolton, Illinois, respectively, was named, out of over 30 participating and 100 affiliated high schools, as the 2012-2013 Jefferson Awards Students in Action Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Regional Recipient for Outstanding Service by A High School. Representatives from Thornton Township High Schools will attend the Jefferson Awards National Ceremonies and Gala in Washington DC June 18th-19th, where they will have an opportunity to compete for the distinction of National Recipient. Chosen for best showcasing the seven goals of the Students in Action program and for their philanthropic contribution to their communities and their schools, District 205 has helped to pave the way for greater volunteerism the communities in and surrounding the south suburbs. On April 25th my mother would have celebrated her 78th birthday. She died on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2006 at 11:30pm. I never realized how much my life mirrored my mother’s life until recently. As teens and young adults we witness the weaknesses of our parents and vow never to make the same mistakes they made. And many times without realizing it (perhaps because we judged without knowledge) we find ourselves walking in their shoes. I’ve also followed her in the good things she accomplished in life. She was an avid learner and teacher of the Word of God. I too share her passionate devotion to God and His Word. We both served (and I continue to serve) as ministers in our local church, and we’ve written teaching materials and booklets to edify and encourage the Body of Christ. In her mid-fifties, my mom wrote a religious column for a community newspaper (Bulletin-Chicago). Since July of last year I’ve been writing Christian articles for this community newspaper (I’m in my late fifties). One form of writing my mother excelled in was poetry (a form I struggle with). The past few years saw its share of financial bubbles. There was the real-estate bubble, the stock market bubbles, and the internet bubble, just to name a few. In bubbles, people pay higher and higher amounts for things that really aren’t worth the money paid for them. And each time people stand around afterwards and ask each other “What just happened?” The Dutch in the 17th century created their own tulip bubble. Long ago tulips became a fad among the rich of Holland, and prices began to mount. Soon even ordinary bulbs were selling for extraordinary prices, and the actually rare bulbs were astronomical. A single tulip bulb would sell for roughly equivalent to $1,250 in current dollars. Historical accounts showed the goods traded for one bulb included: a wagon, a complete suit of clothes, and a hundred bricks of cheese. At the height of the mania, the bulbs were thought too valuable to risk planting by their owners, and it became popular to display the bulbs in what we know as curio cabinets. Tulip traders were making fortunes and the common people soon joined the frenzy. With profits like those to be had, there was nothing local governments could do to stop the frenzy of trading. Then one day a buyer failed to show up and pay for his bulb purchase. The ensuing panic spread across Holland, and within days tulip bulbs were worth only a fraction of their former prices. The tulip bubble had burst. It’s a safe prediction that bubbles will continue to happen. Human nature has always been prone to want things that are difficult to get, especially if everyone else seems to want it too. Irrational behavior becomes rational when enough people are doing it. It’s only afterwards that we stand back and shake our heads and wonder what happened. My advice is to enjoy the tulips around town – just like bubbles - they won’t last long. Our customer base has evolved as well… most are now adults.” Tenth Planet is clean, well lit, and organized, giving it the look and feel of a corporate run store… but Dan also incorporates the personalization aspects of a mom & pop operation, creating an environment conducive to social shopping, where customers are invited into the conversation. They carry books by the industry behemoths, D.C. and Marvel; smaller publishers like Dark Horse and Imagine, and also have the largest selection of independent comics in the area, including the hugely popular Walking Dead series. Business is good at Tenth Planet, enabling them to recently expand into a larger space at 224 W. Lincoln Hwy. (U.S. 30), Schererville, Indiana (219322-2902), where they will be celebrating their 25th

anniversary in June. The grand opening celebration of the new location will coincide with Free Comic Book Day, an industry subsidized annual event now in its tenth year. The expansion will also bring the addition of more games, tee-shirts, gift items, posters, and Dr. Who stuff. Free Comic Book day will be held on Saturday, May 4th 2013, intentionally following the release of Iron Man 3 in theatres. The event is meant to pique new reader’s interest in today’s comics, as well as to offer loyal customers a little gratitude.
