Auditions for “The Big Bad Ugly” Auditions for the world premier of “The Big Bad Ugly” by Don Taylor will be Saturday May 20 at 11am to 12:30pm and Sunday May 21 at 12pm to 1:30 pm. Sponsored by Hammond Community Theater, The Big Bad Ugly is the story of a handsome prince that is turned into a ugly creature by a witch. He only wants to be friends with all the animals of the forest but all of his attempts to befriend them go painfully wrong. The animals of the forest, led by the wise old owl, get together and decide to put a bell on the BBU so they will always know when he’s around. See what happens at the clearing on Bald Mountian. This delightful story about judging people based on our prejudices about appearances and stereotypes has roles for young and old. The Big Bad Ugly plays one weekend, Friday and Saturday July 21 and 22 at 7pm and Sunday July 23 at 2pm. Beatniks is located at 420 Conkey St. Hammond, Indiana. For more info go to Beantiksonconkey.com or call 219-852-0848.

Although you hear increasingly about cyber-attacks and fraud in the news and on social media, many or most of us don’t believe it can happen to us or our business. We don’t want to think about the negative effect it could have on our good name, our cash f low, or our day-to-day business operations. We also may not want to stop and think that even if it “can’t” happen to us, it could happen to someone else in our lives, be it our business supply chain or a family member and that by it happening to them, it could also affect us…. If you do accept the possibility, then take a moment and register now for this workshop and invite others to attend with you. To register visit w w w.sssba.org or call DaNee Rogers at 708-596-2000 ext. 3260. For questions, call Nancy Burrows 708-596-2000 ext. 3258. Let us know if you are coming so we can be sure to save a seat for you. Ask about how to attend this event and all our events for free. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, 8:15am for an enlightening Information Security event. Light refreshments and coffee will be served. Visit our website www.sssba.org and our facebook page www.facebook.com/sssba. org (lots of great business tips there).

George Carlin’s Views on Aging ARLO KALLEMEYN Do you realize that the on ly t i me i n ou r l ives when we like to get old is when we’re kids? If you’re less t ha n 10 yea rs old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions. ‘How old are you?’ ‘I’m four and a half !’ You’re never thirty-six and a half. You’re four and a ha lf, going on five! That’s the key. You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead. ‘How old are you?’ ‘I’m gonna be 16!’ You could be 13, but hey, you’re gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life … . You become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony . YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!! But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED ; we had to throw him out. There’s no fun now, you’re Just a sour-dumpling. W hat’s wrong? What’s changed? You BECOME 21, you T U R N 30, t hen you’re PUSH I NG 40. W hoa ! Put on t he bra kes, it’s
all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone. But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn’t think you would! So you BECOM E 21, T U R N 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60. Yo u’v e b u i l t u p s o much speed that you HIT 70! After that it’s a dayby-day t hing; you HIT Wednesday! Yo u g e t i n t o y o u r 80’s and ever y day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30 ; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn’t end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; ‘I Was JUST 92.’ Then a strange t hing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. ‘I’m 100 and a half!’ May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!! Thanks for reading our ne w s p a p e r. We e nj oy bringing it to you each week. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher whose just passed t he double nickle milestone.

Answer: First, no one is forcing you to buy the house. Your inspector has provided you with pertinent information. W hat you do with that knowledge is a matter of choice, to be exercised with prudence and thoughtful consideration. Second, common sense dictates that if the home has problems with the electrical wiring and furnace, the inspection report for which you paid hundreds of dollars may have saved you thousands. Lastly, the purpose of a home inspection is to get a clear indication as to the overall quality and general condition of the property. Upon viewing the report, you need to make some reasonable assessments: 1. Is this house still worth buying? 2. W hat repa ir items a re considered immediate structural or safety issues that sellers should be expected to address? 3. W hat items should be regarded as rout i ne ma i ntena nce, not requ i r i ng immediate attention? The inspection report is not a shopping

Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. If you have any questions concerning athlete’s feet or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Nooooooo Not Today MIKE BUDER Ok, perhaps I’m being a tad dramatic, but this is a plea to all you anxious home sellers out there: STOP DECLINING SHOW INGS ! I have recent ly been on bot h sides of this issue, and in both cases the cost of t he de cl i ne d show i ng outweighed any benefit t he sel ler m ig ht have perceived in passing on t he a pp oi nt ment . ON T H E BU Y I NG SI DE : I had an approved buyer t hat wa s mot ivated to purchase quickly. I had three homes to show, and gained entry to only one. The evening ended with us in a da rkened front yard, in a light rain, in the cold, wondering why I got a text message canceling t he a pp oi nt me nt . My buyers were f r ust rated and wondering out loud if the sellers wanted to sell. ON THE SELLING SIDE: Several of my sellers are understandably anxious. We often speak of pricing, ne a r by s a le s ac t i v it y, compet ing list ings, strategy and all the other nuances of adding honey to our marketing to attract the buzz of a buyer. And no fewer than two of my sellers declined showings this week. “There wasn’t enou g h not ic e”. “T he place is a mess” or “it’s a bad time”. I don’t dispute that showing your home is sometimes inconvenient, uncomfortable and
troublesome but honestly, unless there is a steaming pile of dragon dung in you r l iv i ng room you rea lly need to “assume the sale” the way a good s a le sper s on doe s a nd open the door. I have said it before that outside of a wedding or a funera l in your living room, you need to allow showings to proceed. I have sold houses when we walked past guests from out of tow n, col lege st udents crashed all over the floor on semester brea k a nd barking, foaming at the mouth dogs. I still sold them! Because if it feels li ke home, THEY BU Y ! Even if people are putting on wa r m coats a nd galoshes in December a week before Christmas to look at your home, they are probably serious. Let them in. Qualified buyers are too rare to squander over convenience or d iscom for t about housekeeping. Ask What Makes a Worthy Life with “The God Committee” Four transplant candidates. One heart. A St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Countless Catastrophic Opportunities. The God Committee is a taut, realistic exploration into how physicians decide which patient will receive the new heart, and the latest production on stage at the Genesius Guild of First United Methodist Hammond. Time is running out as a group of people debate issues of race, gender, and of course…money. Lots of money. This medical thriller takes us into the inner workings of a Transplant Program and a decision—for both their candidates and their program—that is a matter of life and death. Science and morality clash in this riveting drama set inside a hushed boardroom filled with medical professionals who are unable to leave their own emotional baggage outside. Using his great talent of mixing high wire tension with fiery humor, playwright Mark St. Germain has created a charged work that keeps the audience in suspense for the entire evening. Alliances are formed, broken and reformed as the committee argues, accuses, debates and ultimately votes. And just when the matter seems to be decided, the play w r ig ht upends t he proceed i ngs w it h t heat r ica l dynamite. “I’m draw n to shows based in dia log, debate, a nd discourse,” said director Becky Jascoviak. “It is something truly missing in our society today. This show provides fodder for ethic, politics, how decisions get made, and a look into how we value people. Its rich with insight into both the characters on stage as well as personal to each audience member.” Jascoviak is also drawn to using theatre and entertainment for social good. Byerly, Valparaiso, as Dr. Peter Felker; and Gary Mion, Crown Point, as Father Charles Dunbar. Laurie Reyna says her part, Nurse Nella Larkin, carries a personal connection, as both her grandmother and aunt were nurses; one was even, at one time, a transplant coordinator, just like Reyna’s character. “The play gives us a glimpse into how life-and-death decisions are made in a hospital,” says Reyna, “and I’m enjoying the interaction between the various characters with their diverse personalities who have worked together for years.” “It’s a peek into the board room of the hospital, and with the bias some people carry, it becomes a collage of life, triumph and tragedy that will send you on an emotional rollercoaster,” says cast member Elizabeth Roman. “You’re guaranteed to relate to at least one or more of these characters and their perspectives, as their personalities drive passion and interesting situations.” The God Committee contains adult themes, making it comparable to a movie with a PG-13 rating, which may not be suitable for younger patrons. It takes the stage weekends through May 7. Performances are in the Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church of Hammond, 6635 Hohman Ave. in Hammond, Indiana, at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. MTM

Over time, you will run into various suggestions for investing successfully. Yet upon closer inspection, many of these ideas turn out to be “myths” – which could cause you trouble if you treat them as solid advice. Here are five of these myths, along with some reasons for ignoring them: • You can find the next “big thing.” All of us wish we could have “gotten in on the ground f loor” of Apple or Microsoft. And who knows? It’s almost impossible for anyone to identif y these potential “blockbusters.” There’s re a l l y no s hor tc ut to investment success – you need t he patience a nd discipline to invest for the long term, and you need to build a portfolio that’s appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance. • Investors should always seek to “buy low and sell high.” This is actua l ly good adv ice if it were possible to consistently follow it. But how can you know when the market is “high enough” to sell or “low enough” to buy? You can’t – and neither can anyone else. Trying to time the market rarely works. A more appropriate st rateg y is to i nvest regularly and to diversify you r hold i ng s a mong stocks, bonds, and other vehicles, based on your goals and risk tolerance. Diversification can help protect you aga i nst market downturns that primarily affect just one asset class. Diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses. • It’s always smart to buy i nvest ments t hat have performed well recently. You may have read, in investment prospectuses, that “past performance

You need to evaluate each investment on its own merits and on how well it fits into your overall portfolio. • International investing is too risk y. GOD WITH US
God Is with Us ANNA M. CAISON Somet imes t he on ly way we k now God is with us is when we find ourselves walking in the shoes of those who’ve gone before us. The first time I wrote on this subject I told how my daughter developed a personal faith in God when she found herself walking in my shoes, when she made the decision to move to New York to reunite with her estranged husband. I’ve come to realize that “walking in the shoes of those who’ve gone before us” is not confined to just children following parents. It also includes siblings following siblings. On December 28t h I received t his text from my baby sister. “We rea lly a re bookend s, a ren’t we… ? olde st g irl/youngest g irl; our na me beg ins w it h t he let ter “A”; t wo daug hter s most l i ke mom ma ; ident ica l brea st cancer sur v ivors; faced w it h s a me w or k c h a l le n ge. T h i n k G o d is t r y i ng to tel l us somet h i ng ? ” Yes ! God is establishing a pattern of His Presence and His Faithfulness to our family that He is with us! He is preserving Him a present day circle of
witnesses to encourage us in our walk with Him. Just as my grandmother’s and mother’s faith in God nurtured in me a faith in God through their experiences; God is also nurturing faith in my siblings, children, and grandchildren through my experiences with Him. As I write this, I’m reminded of other heroes of faith with shared experiences similar to that of Abraham and Isaac. Elijah and Elisha. Elisha was Elijah’s protégé. God proved He was with Elisha as He was with Elijah through similar experiences. The same with Moses and Joshua. Joshua was Moses’ protégé. God appeared to Joshua as He did to Moses. He appeared to Moses in a burning bush and to Joshua as a warrior. But the call was the same, “Take off your shoes for the place where you stand is holy ground.” W hose shoes have you fou nd yourself walking in? Could it be that God is reaching out to you, to initiate relationship with you? For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Expansions within both Macy’s and J.C. Penney’s are encouraging noted Mayor Michelle. A popular favorite of t he Mayor’s is t he new Sephora salon going into J.C. Penney’s with a much awaited “grand Opening set for Saturday May 5th 2017 stating at 9:30 a.m. High end make up, fragrances, and glamour accessories highlight the new salon. Another new venue coming to Calumet City will be the Eat Moore Cakes complex next to Aunt Sally’s on Burnham Avenue and ow ned by Latrice Moore who is relocating from Lockport, Il. Latrice bought all four lots on that corner and plans to have in addition to a full fashioned bakery building, with storefronts and office space upstairs, a separate greenhouse for growing fresh fruits and vegetables all in state of the art structures. As far as River Oaks center goes, plans are underway to bring in musical venues a nd enter ta i n ments to f i l l up t he center. “How about a Chuck E Cheese,” suggested Pete Saunders, Calumet City Economic Development coordinator? A cheer went up from those present when he mentioned that children’s highlight. Who wouldn’t love to have a Chuck E Cheese close by? Yet another new business in Calumet City is the H.B. Taylor food f lavoring company located in a building adjacent to the huge Gelita corporation off State Street. Other activities outlined by Chamber members include a breakfast meeting at Gareda in May (more to come on that in future N 2 N) and a June meeting again at the library and catered by Don Pedro’s. This month’s event was catered by Windy City Pizza (within Castaways Bowl) and the delicious cookies and sweets were donated by newly opened Calumet City Bakery! ***

De c ide d to t a ke my 11 ye a r old Gr a ndd aug hter Jen n i fer Da n iel le Minton out to Crete to the Cone Cottage on Dixie US 1 and then to enjoy the swings and military memorabilia in the nearby park. Jen is pictured here with a cannon from WWI and the touching memorial nearby that describes a local lad who lost his life in W WI. Jen had lots of questions about the wars and the men and women who fought them and poignant hopes that ‘it (war) never happens again!’ We said some prayers for those who did fight the good fight and those out in harm’s way now, that they come home safe and sound. And a little child shall lead them.... *** CALUMET CIT Y PLUMBING CELEBRATES 50 YEARS.
