Officers from the Lansing Police Department will be taking part in the “COP on Rooftop” fundraiser event which takes place Friday, May 20, 2016—between the hours of 5:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Lansing Dunkin’ Donuts, 17733 Torrence Ave. All donations collected that day will go to support Special Olympics Illinois. Over the past five years The Lansing Police Department has raised over $10,000.00 through this fundraiser. Many other law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois will also be taking part in this event as well. All persons making a donation that day will be given a coupon for a free donut. For every $10 donation received, the person making the donation will be given a Torch Run/Dunkin’ Donuts stainless steel coffee mug and coupon for a free coffee, valid that day only. Also for sale that day will be official Torch Run merchandise and HarleyDavidson raff le tickets. Torch Run hats and T-shirts are $15 each, lapel pins are $5 each and Harley tickets are $10 each. All proceeds from these sales goes to Special Olympics Illinois. We hope to see a large turnout of people from the community who will generously support this very worthy organization.

Jefferson Awards -A Celebration of Service Arlo Kallemeyn Sunday afternoon was a celebration of service to others at Thornton High School in Harvey, IL. The Jefferson Awards - Local Ceremony was modeled after the national organization of the same name. The Jefferson Awards Foundation mission is to empower others to have maximum impact on the things they care most about. Through celebration, they inspire action. Their programs and partnerships drive Americans to change their communities and the world. Each year, the Jefferson Awards honor the most outstanding achievements in public service at the Jefferson Awards National Ceremony. The Jefferson Awards Foundation is the country’s longest standing and most prestigious organization dedicated to activating and celebrating public service. Through their programs they train and empower individuals to serve and lead in their communities, amplifying their impact through a vast network of media partners, mentors and volunteers. The Jefferson Awards Foundation is a non-profit organization that “recognizes, inspires and activates volunteerism and public service in communities, workplaces and schools across America.” The Institute was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard. The Student Board of Thornton Township High School has attended and represented District 205 at both the Regional and National Level of the Jefferson Awards. Due to the number of years that District 205 students have successfully competed in the Jefferson Awards Program, the Student Board is now considered an Ambassador School District. Through Students in Action, District 205 students have dedicated nearly 734,000 hours of service to our community. This service included over 1,500 projects and touched over 52,000 citizens in our community. Some of these projects include L-R Don A. De Graff - Mayor South Holland, Frank M. Zuccarelli - Supervisor Thornton service at food pantries, tutoring elementary school students, assisting Seniors, and Township, Jessica Buckner, Loretta Wells - Phoenix First Lady many more. We look forward to many more service projects from the talented and inspiring students of Thornton High School District 205.
This year’s Jefferson Local Award Ceremony was held to honor community leaders who donate their time and talent in service to others.

Recognizing the potential dangers of social media and Internet usage among children, Patti’s All-American invited guest speaker, Rachel Sitarz, Youth Educator for the Indiana State Police, to come and speak to children at a free presentation that was held on Saturday, April 23. Ms. Sitarz spoke to the children about what kind of personal information is not OK to post and how to protect their privacy. Cyber bullying was discussed well as what to do if you get unwanted requests from an older teen or adult. Children were allowed to ask questions as well. Over 30 children attended along with parents. When the 1999 movie “The Matrix” debut, it frightened me. I remember going to see it with my mom and sister. Halfway through the movie, my anxiety level was so high I had to leave and wait out the movie in the lobby. However, thirteen years later, watching the movie with my granddaughter, I began to see hidden “spiritual implications.” In the movie there are 2 worlds in operation that earth’s entire population is unaware of except for a small group of rebels. The visible world is a virtual reality world generated by manmade machines over powered man and seized control of the planet. The 2nd world is the actual world which consist of the machines feeding off the humans connected to it, who are unaware of their predicament because of the virtual reality they live in. Morpheus, leader of a small band of rebels whose goal is to free humanity from the machines, is able to lure Neo (a computer hacker) into a quest that leads him to the truth of his virtual existence. Upon swallowing a red pill, Neo is disconnect from the machines and joins the rebels in their mission to free humanity. We a lso live in 2 worlds. If they receive our message, they become citizens of God’s Kingdom, and are disconnected (freed) from the controlling inf luence of Satan and the destruction to come. Our message is not condemnation, but love and truth that leads to freedom and life everlasting in God’s manifested Kingdom to come (John 3:16-17). Humane Society Reopens After Flu Outbreak Tails were wagging and cats were purring last week at Humane Society Calumet Area (HSCA) as the adoption center reopened after weeks of battling canine flu. HSCA is now open for adoptions, and the center, located at 421 45th Ave., Munster, Ind., will host a grand reopening event on May 7 from noon to 5:30 p.m. Adoption fees will be waived for the superhero dogs and cats that battled the flu and won. The event also will feature a scavenger hunt, raff le prizes and treats. HSCA announced late last week that test results had confirmed that the dogs and cats repeatedly tested negative for Canine Inf luenza (CIV) H3N2. While canine f lu cases have been popping
up in Chicago for more than a year now, this is the first time that HSCA had experienced a respiratory disease of this severit y, HSCA CEO Rachel Delaney said. “ T h a n k s t o t h e s u p p or t a nd generosity of the community and the hard work of our staff and volunteers, HSCA was able to overcome this very trying time,” Delaney said. The shelter, closed to the public in mid-March when the flu virus spread quickly throughout the kennel. Within a couple of days, all of the 98 dogs housed at the shelter at the time were showing symptoms of the virus. Later testing revealed that several cats were positive for CIV H3N2, the first time a cat had tested positive on sequential
testing in the U.S. After weeks of supportive treatment and loving care, the dogs and cats a ll recovered. Testing prov ided by Merck Animal Health and Dr. Sandra New bu r y, d i rec tor of t he Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterina r y Medicine, confirmed last week that all animals were negative for the virus. South Suburban College student Ronnell Art Tatum was sworn in by Marty Lareau, SSC Vice President and Board Secretary, for his first term as the new Student Trustee at the college’s April meeting of the Board of Trustees, and welcomed to his new post by Chairman Frank Zuccarelli. “I’m very excited about this opportunity to serve on the SSC Board of Trustees,” said Tatum. “I hope to help increase student enrollment and to be a great representative for the students of South Suburban College.” Mr. Tatum is a graduate of Rich Central High School in Olympia Fields although he attended Thornton High School in Harvey for his first three years. A member of Student Leadership, Ronnell’s major at South Suburban College is Communications/Media Arts and he has been on the Dean’s List for the past three (3) semesters. Additionally, he is a recipient of an ISA (Illinois Steps Ahead) Scholarship. Currently he holds the position of Vice-President of the “Young Democrats” and plans to pursue a career in politics.

One bi l l had t wo d at e s of s er v ic e w it h two balances owed. The other bill had five dates of service with four balances owed. As a lways, I phoned t he c l ie nt ’s Me d ic a r e supplement i n su r a nc e compa ny to ma ke sure that it got the claims from Medicare. You can’t blame an insurance company for not paying its part of a bill that Medicare never sent to it. I n e ac h c a s e, w it h both hospitals, Medicare failed to send the claims information to the senior c i t i z e n ’s i n s u r a n c e company. In the letter that I wrote to each hospital, I explained this and asked that the hospital send the vital claims information that it had regarding the bill directly to the client’s insurance company.
