Championship Basketball Camps The South Suburban College Championship Basketball Camps start June 22nd. The Championship Shooting Camp runs from Monday June 22 thru Thursday June 25 (1pm-4pm). The cost of the camp is $60. The Championship Basketball Camp runs from Monday June 29 thru Thursday July 2 (9am-3pm). The cost is $105. If you enroll in both camps the cost is only $150. Tri Town Safety Village is the only facilit y in Nort hwest India na t hat provides comprehensive training in all areas of safety. Students get HANDS ON experiences! There is a Survive-ALive house; this is a scaled down house where children can be taught how to safely exit their home when their smoke detectors are active and send a warning signal. The Survive-A-Live house fills up with theatre smoke, and under the careful watch of volunteer fire & police officers, students are encouraged to make their way quickly and safely out of the home. Last school year alone, SV trained over 4,000 children throughout the region. “Love and Shrimp” offers Humor at Community Theatre Fans of humorist Judith Viorst already know her target audience -- the WAMMMMs: those unsung throngs of White, Aff luent, Middle-class, Middle-aged, Married Mothers. Viorst’s several books have addressed themselves to life changes seen from that perspective, virtually decade by decade. Now, Crown Point Community Theatre is set to bring forth a cabaret-style show roaring with the WAMMMM voice – Love and Shrimp, directed by Natalie Franks with assistant direction by KeriAnne Valukis. CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We have been looking at homes for several months now. What amazes us is how some sellers overprice their home to the point of being ridiculous. Why do they do that? Answer: Agents know all too well about t hese t y pe of sel lers. T hese sel lers arrogantly slap the highest price on their home that they think they can get away with. Then they are surprised and angry at the Real estate agent when the market slaps them right back with no offers. Our g uess is t hey t hin k t hey a re smarter t han ever yone else, smarter than their agent, the buyer’s agent, the county appraiser, the buyers lender and all the other sellers who have sold or who currently have their home listed on the market. Hey, we might be wrong- maybe a lottery winner will view their home and write them a check right on the spot! Maybe these sellers feel entitled, that they deserve a higher price than anyone else. They think it’s their agents’ job to meet t heir unrea list ic ex pectat ions. They feel their agent isn’t doing their
job because they haven’t sold their “way overpriced” listing. Maybe they feel that their agent should have taken out a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal, or maybe they should’ve stood in front of the home with a bullhorn to get buyers to view their home. Because once a buyer walks in the door, they will instantly buy this “way overpriced” listing. These type of sellers don’t realize that this “way overpricing” is a risk. Candice Ford of Highland attending Purdue University Calumet was deployed twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. Ford was in the Army for six and a half years working as a signal intelligence analyst. She was not sure what path she wanted to take after high school since she was a first generation college student. Ford had a n u ncle who was i n t he Marines, but he was not her motivation to join the Army. She wanted to be independent
and find out what she wanted to do with her life. “I have learned a great deal while serving in the army, I became confident in myself and what I was capable of, Candice said “The army taught me how to be a critical thinker and a problem solver.” At Purdue Calumet Ford is pursuing her career in HDFS, Human Development and Family Services. She plans to go to graduate school and specify in Veteran psychology. If all else fails, she wants to work with troubled youth and provide structure for children. Ford is heavily involved at the university and is taking on the role of becoming the student government association president in the fall 2015. A new ambulance is responding to 911 calls in Calumet City. The 2015 Ford Chassis Horton Ambulance is outfitted with all the latest features for life saving. It is literal "rolling emergency room," notes Calumet City Fire Department Deputy Chief Richard Banske. The ambulance is outfitted with all the important instrumentation for life saving which include cardiac monitoring, ventilation, intubation and much more. The ambulance, pictured here, costs in the neighborhood of $193,000 with another $150,000 in equipment added in. The ambulance is paid for via the Paramedic Fund. Each time the ambulance attends a call, a fee is assessed and is either paid by the person's private insurance, Medicare or New Calumet City ambulance ready for service calls. Medicaid or personally. Those funds keep the Calumet City ambulance fleet answering calls. Calumet City boasts of five full (L-R) Aaron Borowski, Mike Wyrwicki and Mike Ball, all Firefighter Paramedics. service ambulances-3 are in the front line of service and two are for backup. The new ambulance will be placed in the front-line of emergency responders. There are 56 firefighter paramedics in the Calumet City Fire Department and that includes Dept. Chief Banske and Fire Chief William Galgan. Most of the calls that come into the fire department are for injuries either from automobile accidents or home accidents (falls, burns, etc.) with about 30% for senior citizens due to the large number of seniors who live in Calumet City and the 5 senior citizen facilities that make Calumet City their home. Many of the calls are not life threatening, but due to the insurance factor, "we are like the doctor's office," Banske explained. They call us for health problems, that had better insurance been available for them, and were able to make doctor's visits, we would not be hearing from them." So, Banske is just happy that the equipment in the "rolling ER’s" is available to those who need it. For those who wonder what goes into the ambulance consider the following: A Zoll Cardiac monitor costs $25,000. A Striker Stair Chair, $3,200. A Ambulance interior is a rolling emergency room. Ventilator, $2,800. A fully stocked drug box, $2,000 and Mobile Radios to communicate with the hospital, $3,750 and so on. That is just a partial list of the items that make up the "rolling ER." When a Calumet City resident calls 911 "90% of the time they are taken to St. Margaret's in Hammond with 10% being taken to Ingalls in Harvey," Banske explained. To w a r d t h a t e n d , consider these suggestions: • Give you r por t fol io a r e g u l a r “c he c kup.” To help ensure the “health” of your por t folio, you may want to periodically rev iew it w it h t he assistance of a financial professional — someone who can point out gaps in your ex ist i ng hold i ngs or changes that may need to be made. • Fol lo w a b a l a nc e d investment “diet.” As you know, nutrition experts recommend a ba la nced diet, draw ing on a ll t he major food groups. Too much of any one category can lead to health concerns. An analogous situation ex ists when you invest — if you own too much of one particular asset class, such as agg ressive grow t h stocks, you might expose yourself to a n “u n hea lt hy ” degree of risk, because you cou ld take a big hit during a market downturn. But not all investments move i n t he sa me direction at the same time, so if you own a mix of stocks, bonds, and other vehicles, you can lessen t he impact of volatilit y on your portfolio. In investing, as in a ll walks of life, balance and moderation are important. • Don’t let investments
get “la zy.” Some of your investments may not be working hard enough for you. To cite one possibility, you might own quite a few certificates of deposit (CDs). Sister Julita celebrated her 99th birthday on April 27, 2015 and will have been a sister for 80 years this August 2, 2015 where a huge celebration will be given her by the members of the parish family and her religious order, the School Sisters of Notre Dame. A large personalized birthday card was situated in the back of church this past Sunday and everyone signed a personal message to the beloved nun. Sister was treated to her favorite restaurant (Cavalier in Hammond) on her birthday and is front and center at Mass every Sunday along with her constant companion and caregiver Sister Mary Margaret. Sister Julita has been with St. Columba Parish for over 35 years and many of the students she taught at the school are among her closest friends today. Her picture was on Facebook a few weeks ago leading up to her 99th birthday and calls, cards. email and letters poured into her mailbox from past students who are now scattered around the world. One of her caretakers, Clara Gadzinski, notes that Sister Julita kept a small notebook during her teaching years and listed all her students.
