5th Annual Garden Club Plant Sale
It’s that time of year again, time for the South Holland Garden Club’s Plant sale. Affectionately known as our “Flower Frenzy”, it truly is a bevy of annuals, perennials and garden goods for sale. This year we will once again be featuring bountiful hanging baskets, just in time for Mother’s Day. Some of the perennials featured for sale this year are Phlox, Alium, Hostas, Mexican Primrose and Periwinkle. A variety of annuals have been grown from seed, to add variety to your gardens. These include Mexican Sunf lowers, Dwarf Sunf lowers, 4 O’Clocks and an assortment of Zinnias. As we did last year, we will be offering a limited supply of Tropical Milkweed seedlings. This year, we will also have Butterfly Milkweed seedlings, and seeds for our native Milkweed will also be available. There will also be an assortment of garden books and magazines, and garden related items, such as gift cards, pots and vases. The Garden club members will be on hand to answer any gardening questions you may have, and advice will be given on the planting and care of the plants available for purchase. This year’s sale is on track to be our biggest sale ever! Don’t miss out. The gardening season is just beginning, so now it is a perfect time to get your thumb green for the season. The sale on Saturday, May 13th from 9:30am to 4pm. The event will be held at the American Legion Hall, just off South Park Avenue at 443 157th Street, South Holland. For more information or directions, call 708-339-7986.
Bishop Noll Fine Arts Weekend Bishop Noll Institute’s second Fine Arts Weekend will showcase its talented students May 19-21 at the school. From 7 to 8 p.m. May 19, the Bishop Noll cafeteria will be transformed into a jazz club when the BNI Jazz Band, Mariachi Band and String Ensemble perform. The front of the cafeteria will feature an art gallery from Mr. Michael Carioto’s art classes. A talent show will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 20 in the auditorium. Co-sponsored by National Honor Society, this show will feature members of the band, choir and theater programs and will showcase students singing, dancing, performing on instruments, reciting speeches or poetry and one-act plays. The main event, BNI’s annual Spring Band and Choir Concert, takes place at 6 p.m. May 21 in the auditorium. Under the direction of band director Mr. Rocco Carioto and choir director Mr. David Herr, the concert will feature music from Elvis, Prince, Richard Wagner, Beauty and the Beast and more. Prior to the concert, a spaghetti dinner fundraiser will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. It costs $7 per person for the all-you-can-eat dinner. The money will benefit the BNI band program. Admission to all performances is free to the public. The Fine Arts department will have a collection box for goodwill offerings to help the ever growing fine arts programs at BNI.

The Bishop Noll choir performed for residents of Hartsfield Village in Munster last week (April 25). The students sang a variety of tunes including “A whole new world,”Somebody to love,” and “Think of me.” Choir director David Herr dedicated the performance to the memory of Ida Polito, an alumna from the Bishop Noll (then Catholic Central) class of 1935, who lived at Hartsfield Village. Polito always sat in the front row of the BNI performances and was a faithful supporter of Bishop Noll and the choir over the years. The choir also performed in April at St. John Bosco School in Hammond and St. Mary’s School in Crown Point. The choir will next perform during the Bishop Noll Spring Band and Choir Concert at 6 p.m. May 21 in the auditorium, 1519 Hoffman St. Enter Door C. Admission is free and the event will be preceded by an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. The cost for dinner is $7. Often, when listing a for sale by owner (most end up listing), I am asked what happens if someone who expressed interest wh i le t he home was a FSBO buys after I list the home. My answer is “if they didn’t buy then, but do buy now, then I have done my job”. Get t i ng them to buy is what the agent is paid for. If the seller could get them to buy, they wouldn’t need me. Just because they saw it w it h t he ow ner f irst doesn’t mean anything. Realtors aren’t paid for getting people first, we are paid for getting people to the closing table. In other words, outcome. Results. Upon occ a sion, I w i l l grant a seller an exclusion on certain buyers. It can be a neighbor, it can be someone who is tr y ing to s el l t hei r home i n order to buy, or any sort of buyer. My exclusions a re not a n exempt ion f rom com m i ssion a nd here’s why: a n of fer is just a beginning. It takes work and skill to affect a closing. If I charge a seller a 0% commission for an excluded buyer, then it is they who will have to be the agent, not me, because I can’t hold that buyer’s hand for 2-3 months for no compensat ion. If a sel ler wa nts to ha nd le pre-qualification, offer, negot iat ion, cont racts, inspections, processing, title and closing on their
own, they invite disaster. I never wa nt to be i n competition with a client, nor do I wa nt to wa it unpaid on the sidelines while t hey engage in a “do it yourself project” on the biggest transaction of their life to save a few dol l a r s . A s a v e d l i ne item is often at the cost of a lower net and that is not conjecture – it is fact. Rea ltors per for m b e t t e r t h a n s om e on e selling their own house. Eliminat ion of fees a l l together is pennywise and pound foolish – too much can go wrong. You want a professional working for you and no professional can work for free. W hat good is “saving” on the com m ission if you r t r a n s ac t ion do e sn’t close? There is one rather immutable truth to real estate: if you are paying out a commission check, you are at a closing table. W hich, I believe, is the point. Your closing! Mother’s Day 2006 ANNA M. CAISON Eleven years ago, Mother’s Day fell on May 14. It was in the year 2006. I remember it well because that was the day my mother went home to be with the Lord. We had spent the day before, together, celebrat ing each ot her. We did t his because the following day, Mother’s Day, my children had something planned for me, and my brother and his wife had planned a special dinner for her. W hat I remember most about t hat day is the presence of peace I felt as she transitioned from this life into eternity. “A n n, mom’s i n t he hospita l, sta r t pray ing ! ” my sister ca lling from t he hospital said. As I began to pray I was embraced by a comforting presence of peace. An hour later, around 11:00pm, my brother called, “Ann, mom is gone.” God’s comforting presence stayed with me all through the night as I began making calls to family members of mom’s passing. Her death caught all of us by surprise. She got up Mother’s Day and went to church----- morning ser v ice, Sunday School, and then to my brother’s house. Before they sat down to dinner, she went back home to get something she had forgotten. When she didn’t return, my brother went to her apartment and found her unconscious.

SATURDAY, MAY 13
T he fol low i ng yea r I t houg ht t h is day wou ld be pa inf u lly unbea rable, but it wasn’t. Mother’s Day is a day of celebration and rejoicing. My mother beat the odds stacked against her by raising 11 children practically alone. She took us to church, taught us about faith in God, and to love, respect and look out for each other. She refused to allow poverty and poorly funded schools to destroy hope in us. She put books in our hands and told us to reach for the stars. None of us have received the Nobel Peace Prize or made the Wealthiest Black Families in America list, but we have been a light to those around us. And isn’t that what God asks of us? Mom is still with us. Her creative and spiritual DNA is visible in our family. Her children and children’s children are avid writers, artists, musicians, ministers/ pastors, a nd teachers of t he gospel. Her legacy of faith in Jesus has become our legacy of faith to our children and grandchildren with the hope that it will be shared with the next generation and so on till Christ returns. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!! For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Speaking Of Seniors
Retired Officer Down WOODROW WILCOX In April and May of 2017, I helped a retired police officer who was our client. He brought medical bills to our office and asked why he was getting the bills. There were four bills. I researched t hem and learned that two of the bills were already paid by his insurance company. But, t he insurance c omp a ny d id not ge t the other two bills. So, I wrote letters to get the billing information to the insurance company. The ret ired police of f ic e r w a s w ou nd e d when he was shot during an invasion of his home by five men. He shot and killed one of the five men. The other four men left in a hurry. Three of them were found, caught, and charged. The last one is still running. When the retired police officer delivered the bills to me, it did seem like he was being billed over $20,000 for medical and a mbu la nce ser v ices. I am glad to say that I believe my letters a nd phone calls will result in a final balance on all bills
combined of either zero or something close to zero. A l l t he help t hat I gave this retired police of f ic e r w a s F R E E OF CHARGE. Everyone at this insurance agency really ca res about our senior cit i zen clients. We “go the extra mile” to protect them from financial harm from mistakes or fraud in the Medicare system. D o e s y ou r i n s u r a n c e agent or agency give this high level of ser v ice to senior citizen clients? If not, maybe it is time to sw itch to an insurance agency that does give such high level service. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill ca se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of t h at a genc y over one million dollars by fighting m ista kes a nd f raud i n the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDIC A RE PROBLEM$ (w w w.SolvingMedicareProblems.com) a nd posts a r t icles at w w w. WoodrowWilcox.com.

Bishop Nol l’s Biolog y Club recent ly pa r t icipated i n new ex per iences t hat increased their interest and excitement about science. First, the students took a field trip to the University of Chicago Department of Human Genetics on April 11. While there, they visited six labs where they observed jellyfish and saw heart cells beating in a petri dish. They also met with a University of Chicago student who studies the evolution and development of snail shells as a model organism and applies what they learn to human development. Bishop Noll junior Nicole Michelin, of Chicago’s Hegewisch neighborhood, enjoyed the day. “T he f ield t r ip w a s i nt r ig u i ng a nd informative. The labs were fascinating and seeing some of their experiments be performed was amazing,” she said. She enjoys Biology Club and plans to continue

studying science with aspirations to become either a psychologist or genetics counselor. A few weeks later, students from University of Chicago Department of Human Genetics visited Bishop Noll and served as guest speakers during Biology Club’s celebration of National DNA Day. The media center was filled with Noll students who learned from these mentors about their research, DNA, and how they decided to study science. T he Bi shop Nol l Biolog y C lub w a s developed by Noll science teacher Rebecca Dostatni ’00 to increase awareness and excitement about biology as well as scientific literacy. “I noticed that most of the advanced Biolog y students I taught last year were particularly interested and passionate about science,” Dostatni said. “Biology Club is a way I can continue to guide students who want to study Biology in college even if they are no longer in my class.” Biology Club meets once a week. A typical meeting includes prayer, science jokes and discussion of scientific research.

When God Made Moms ARLO KALLEMEYN By Emma Bombeck BY THE TIME God made mot her s, he w a s i nto his sixth day of working overtime. A n a ngel a p p e a r e d a nd a s k e d , “Why are you spending so much time on this one?” The Lord answered and asked, “Have you seen the spec sheet on her? ” She has to be completely washable, but not plastic: have 200 moveable parts, a ll replaceable; run on black coffee and leftovers; have a lap that can hold three children at one time and that disappears when she stands up; have a kiss that can cure any thing from a scraped knee to a broken heart; and six pairs of hands.” T h e Angel was astounded at the re qu i rement s for t h i s one they called Mother. “Six pairs of hands! No w ay ! ” s a id t he a ngel. The Lord replied, “Oh, it’s not t he ha nds t hat are the problem, it’s the three pairs of eyes that m ot h e r s mu s t h a v e .” “A nd that’s just on the st a nda rd model ? ” t he A ngel asked. The Lord nodded i n ag reement, “You’ve got it”, he said. One pair of eyes to see through the closed door as she asks her children w h at t he y a r e doi ng , even though she already knows. The second pair in the back of her head to see what she needs to know even though no one thinks she can - and the third pair are here in the front of her head. They are for looking at an errant child and saying that she understa nds a nd loves him or her without even saying a word.”
The Angel tried to stop t he L ord, “T h is is too much work for one day. Wait until tomorrow to finish.” “But I can’t,” the Lord protested. “I am so close to f in ish i ng t h is creation that is so close to my ow n hea r t. She a l r e a d y he a l s he r s e l f when she is sick and can feed a family of six on a pound of hamburger and can get a nine-year old to stand in the shower.” The Angel moved closer and touched the woman. “But you have made her so soft, Lord. “She is soft, “ the Lord agreed, “but I have also made her tough! You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish.” “W i l l she be able to think?” asked the Angel. The Lord replied, “Not only will she be able to think, she will be able to reason and negotiate.” The Angel then noticed something, reached out and touched the woman’s cheek. “Oops, it looks like you have a leak in this model. I told you t hat you were tr y ing to put too much into this one.” “That’s not a lea k” the Lord objected. “That’s a tear!” “What’s it for?” the A ngel asked. The Lord said, “The tear is her way of expressing her love, her joy, her sorrow, her disappointment, her pain, her loneliness, her grief and her pride.” The Angel was impressed. “You are a genius, Lord. You thought of ever y t hing. Mot hers are truly amazing!” Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of my mom.

Give Mom a Gift to Help Her Financial Future
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We would like to add some i nex pen sive sec u r it y to ou r home, especially over the winter. What security ideas have you seen wh i le show i ng different homes? Answer: Here a few ideas. Get to know your neighbors. Neighbors are terrific watchdogs. They want their neighborhood safe, too. Here’s a n obv ious one, but wor t h mentioning. Even if your neighborhood feels sa fe, ma ke lock ing up a habit. Burglars often test a home by knocking on a door and, if no one answers, they attempt to open it. Keep every exterior door and window locked, including the door between the garage and house. Try faking it. Install dummy security cameras. (Very inexpensive). Pretend to have a dog. Buy a couple of “Beware of Dog” signs at a hardware store and put them up. Place a LARGE dog food bowl on your front and back door locations. Talk to the local Police. They will send a trained officer to your home to do a walk through with you, pointing out your v ulnerabilities and suggesting simple fixes. Check your police department’s website for crime statistics and tips. Remember to alert police when you’ll be out of town.
Ju k e b ox Ro e A m i w i t h records; medical ten’s unit with Maxima 111 Staodyn with patches; two 50s era table lamps. 708-418-0343
Keep the place looking lived in. Rotate lights on timers when you’re gone. Sign up for USPS’ Hold Mail service, reschedule expected deliveries and get friends to drop by randomly to just walk around. Light the night. Install bright, motiontriggered security lights outside the front and back of your home. Buy a dog. I have a dog and although she is wonderful with adults and kids, she barks when there is close outdoor activity around the home or when someone comes to the door. This bark would scare away most intruders. Most burglars work the daytime shift, just like most of us do. They decide whet her to hit your home based on appearances: Is it easy to crack or not worth the trouble? The most effective improvements are the ones that persuade a burglar to move on. BOB KRYGSHELD W i t h M o t h e r ’s D a y coming, you might want to go beyond chocolates and flowers this year and give Mom something that can help her far into the future. What sort of financial gift can improve her life? You could, for instance, encourage your mother to fund her IRA. As long as she has any earned income, she is eligible to invest in a t radit iona l or Rot h I R A . I n 2017, t he I R A c ont r i but ion limit is $5,500, or $6,500 for i nd i v idu a l s 5 0 or older. Trad it iona l IR A cont r ibut ion s may be deduct ible, depend i ng on one’s i ncome, a nd ea rnings ca n grow ta x deferred. Taxes are due upon w it hd r aw a l a nd withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty. Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but earnings are distributed tax-free, provided an investor has had the account at least five years and doesn’t start taking withdrawals until age 59½. You ca n’t cont r ibute directly to your mother’s IRA, but you can give her money to use for t hat purpose, if she chooses. And since she has until April 17, 2018, to fully fund her IRA for the 2017 tax year, your gift now may help make it that much easier for Mom to “max out” on her account. You mig ht a lso wa nt to give Mom some tips on how she c a n help maintain her f inancia l independence throughout her life. If she ever needed some type of long-term
care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home or the services of a home hea lt h a ide, t he costs could be extremely high, and Medicare ty pically pays l it t le of t hese expenses. So you might w a nt t o c on ne c t he r mother with a financial professiona l, who ca n prov ide st r ateg ies for protecting her from longterm care costs. One more suggestion: Give a gift to a charitable organization your mother supports. Even t hough you’re ma k ing t he gif t i n Mom’s n a m e, y ou should be able to reap some benefits yourself, even apart from the good fe el i ngs you’l l get by helping a charitable group. As long as t he cha rit y has 501(c)(3) status, your g i f t ca n of fer you ta x advantages. You may be able to get even more tax benefits if you donate appreciated assets, such as stocks, to a charity. If you give appreciated stocks you’ve held for more than one year, you can deduct the value of the securities, based on their worth when you make the gift – and neither you nor the charity will have to pay capital gains taxes on the donated investments. Your mother has done a lot for you. This Mother’s D a y, s h o w h e r y o u appreciate her efforts. AMISH COOKBOOK AUTHOR VISITS P E AC E C H R I S T I A N R E F O R M E D CHURCH: In their traditional Amish garb, the Eicher family, parents Joe and Lovina and children Lovina, 13; Verena, 19 ; Joseph, 14; a nd Kev in, 11, were on hand to meet and greet members and visitors at Peace Church in South Holland on Saturday April 29, 2017. Lovina Eicher is a cookbook author and had copies of her books available for purchase and for her to sign. As a longtime fan of Lovina’s (and before her, her dear mother Elizabeth Coblentz’) heartwarming syndicated columns, I was anxious to meet her a nd her fa m i ly. T he Eicher’s have eight children, but only 4 could come along for the trip from their home in Michigan to South Holland. Lovina and her daughters wore their traditional hand made dresses and caps in bright colors. The blue and green dresses worn that day were from one of the weddings they had participated in as cooks and ser vers. Just meeting the family I felt as though I knew them from Lovina’s descriptions of their day-today activity, harsh to non-Amish, but ordinary if one is raised in that way. Gracious a nd uncomplicated, t hey pat ient ly a ns wered ou r quest ions about t heir lifest yle. There were 3 cookbook s ava i lable t hat day, but I chose to purchase the 2010 “Amish Cook’s A nniversa r y Book (20 yea rs of Food, Fa mily a nd Fa it h)” which Lov ina signed for me. It sta rts out with columns and recipes written by Lovina’s mother Elizabeth Coblentz and on to Lovina taking over the columns after Elizabeth’s untimely death at 66 in 2002. The recipes of both mother and daughter are simple, nourishing and delicious! The recipes in the book were tested by members of Peace Church and Peace MOPS and were available as samples on Saturday. Very good indeed! Despite the rainy weather that Saturday, fans and friends alike joined the Eicher family who totally charmed everyone in the room! Pictured here are some of the guests that day: Connie Kallemeyn, Grace Lyzenga a nd Sher yl Kostelk. Blessings to the Eicher Family and their Old Order Amish! *** ST. Pictured here are a couple of the fun events that day. Elise Bereolos, 18, was “Belle” from “Beauty and the Beast,” and Tony Lewis was a “Power Ra nger.” The cost u med cha racters were f rom L ew is’ compa ny “Once Upon a Celebrity”, and added to the fun that day. In another picture, St. John Lutheran School Principal Jared Griesemer is a great sport as he was just ‘dunked’ by a student who had a good aim. The school also offered an Open House that day and is in the midst of signing up students (there are now about 100 altogether) for the 2018-2019 school year. The church and school are located at Wentworth and Randolph in Lansing, 708-895-9240. ***
