Legislative Update From Thaddeus Jones Your State Representative in Springfield May 2016 Dear Friend, I am honored to serve as your advocate in the Legislature. Here is an update, including the latest news from Springfield - and what I am doing to represent our area. If you have any questions or concerns to share, please State Rep 29th District - Thaddeus Jones feel free to contact me at my constituent service office at repjones.jones@gmail.com or 708-933-6018 . You may also visit my office at 1910 East Sibley Blvd. Calumet City, IL 60409. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely,
Thaddeus Jones Thaddeus Jones State Representative 29th District
As you know, state universities and community colleges continue to struggle with funding uncertainty. Recently, I helped pass legislation to provide crucial funding for state universities, community colleges, and grants for low income students. Without these dollars, several universities including Chicago State University warned they would have to close their doors. I know that having local educational opportunities is vital for area students and adult learners to have a chance for higher paying jobs. We have much more work to do, and I will continue fighting to fully fund higher education in Illinois.
I spoke with South Suburban College President Don Manning this week about my efforts to protect higher education. Pictured is President Manning, his wife Jill Manning, and Student Coordinator of SSC Rebecca Garcia when they visited the Illinois House of Representatives to advocate for education. I am committed to partner with local school officials to keep education at the forefront of legislative efforts in Illinois.

Unrealistic expectations of w hat a proper t y i s worth and petty holdouts can scuttle many deals. Whether a seller or buyer be, do your research and get professional adv ice. Sellers need to understand a nd accept what t hei r house is worth today. It may have no relation to what it could have sold for in 2005, how much t h e y o w e , h o w mu c h t hey paid for it or how much work they put into it over the last 10 years. A home is only worth what someone i s w i l l i ng to pay for it. All the analysis means nothing if nobody w ill buy it. Pa rt of t he difficulty in setting a price is due to the lack of similar “sold” homes to use as comparables. Short sales, ba n k ow ned a nd f i xer uppers a re ra mpa nt in many neighborhoods and can negatively affect price comparisons. Buyers, too, need to be educated. A buyer, just as a seller, needs to have rea l i st ic ex pec t at ion s.
If you low ball, the offer may insult a realistically pr iced sel ler a nd you r offer will be ignored and you will be just wasting time. Time that you may be able to better spend on f i nd i ng a proper t y that truly fits your needs and wa llet. Buyers should develop criteria, including price, location a nd fe at u re s t h at a re realistic. Once you know what your perimeters are, start searching. A good realtor can help you put a plan together and set it in motion. Saving you time and grief along the way. To answer the question – YES, real estate can be fun. Get educated, set a plan, work the plan and t he ex per ience ca n be fulfilling and enjoyable with only a side of anxiety. Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. If you have any questions concerning athlete’s feet or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

South Suburban College Paralegal Students Honored
DEE COLLINS Spiritual Mentorship is a new term, but not a new concept. You may call it d i s c iple sh ip, suc c e s sion pla n n i ng , pa rent ing, or even leadership development depend i ng upon you r profession. The bottom line is mentorship is all about passing the baton and guiding others endeavoring to make their dreams a reality. Don’t get caught up in the word “spiritual” as if this can only happen in a church. Spiritua l mentorship is simply a matter of imparting and living out spiritual principles- first done in the home, but also in the marketplace, community, church, and other entities. Next Level Leaders (you and I) are always preparing future generations to take their lives to the next level. We can’t be stagnant in equipping our successors. It is imperative that leaders effectively plan for change; as well as the longevity of legac y by implement ing spir itua l principles. The plans and people may change… but the principles do not!
Is planning simple? It could be. But the sweat comes in the preparation, execution and after-care. As a result, we usually won’t immediately see the outcomes we work so hard to achieve. Yet, don’t lose sight of the bigger picture. Living by spiritual principles is the key to our success, increase and sustainability. We must be cognizant of what they are, and apply them with intent. As leaders, we can change the circumstances in our lives and influence those around us by providing leadership through consistent, dedicated mentorship. It is time for you to “get your leadership fix” and take your life to the next level by adding value with intent to others, which will in turn ignite greater change in you! F Y I…80 % of success is based on psycholog y and 20% is based on skill set. Successful leaders have skills, but they use psychology and apply spiritual principles to their lives, homes, careers and relationships.

GOD WITH US
www.myshopper.biz/columnists/
Knowing God As... ANNA M. CAISON My favorite Mother’s Day scripture is found in Isaiah 49:15-16. Here the Lord personifies His love for His people as a nursing mother! “Can a woman forget her sucking ch i ld, t hat she shou ld not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands;” (KJV) What an awesome expression of love. In its context, Israel is in captivity to her enemies as a result of her disobedience to God. And though she feels abandon and forgotten, God uses the Prophet Isaiah to express His continued love and care for His people. We often see God’s love expressed in scripture as that of a father or husband, but here we see a description of His love that is synonymous to mothers. It has been said that when it comes to parents dealing with difficult children, a mother’s love and patience far exceeds that of the father. Yet there comes a time when even mothers become exhausted and give up. But God, in this passage of scripture has committed Himself to the faithful rearing, nurturing and care of His
people despite their inconsistencies and shortcomings. Though He chasten, He still loves. It’s comforting to know that when life seems to be crashing in all around us; be it chastisement for sin, or suffering as a servant of Christ, we can crawl into the arms of a loving Father. For we are His work ma nsh ip created in Ch r ist Jesus. Nothing and no one can separate us, or pluck us out of His hands. We are permanently and perpetually secure in His faithfulness to us. Many times in the midst of failure, disobedience and distress, I’ve crawled into the arms of the Father via sincere a nd humble prayer. It is here t hat I experience His comforting and forgiving presence; the sweet smelling fragrance of His breath drying the tears from my eyes, reassuring me with memories of His past faithfulness with the promise of continued faithfulness of His love and care for me today and forever more. For questions and/or comments send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We own property which is for sale in a small community. Why is it that since we went with a broker outside our little town, local agents don’t show our home? We were told of the possibility of being shunned for using an outside broker but is this really the case? We understand the market and what’s going on, but are we to assume that NONE of the properties in our price range (there are only a few) have been shown? Answer: Long ago, when we first acquired a real estate license, we listed a property Chicago;Van Heating;A07377;5x6.5-4c (16Sp-B1) A helpful in anDrunen exclusive neighborhood. local agent explained that while it was a nice property, we should not work outside of “our” area -- meaning we should not work inside “her” area. We could never figure out who made up such rules and boundaries. It was no problem, we told the agent: If she and other neighborhood brokers
didn’t have a buyer we would find one and keep all of the commission -- and we did. You have a property for sale. Real estate brokers who do not sell homes or represent buyers don’t eat. If your property is competitive in terms of price, condition, location and the local market it will sell and some happy broker will earn a fee. If the implicit suggestion is that local brokers have banned together to deny equal market access to other brokers, then the local brokers might be violating antitrust laws. Sculpted, recycled tires is the medium a r t i st C h a k a i a Bo oker u s e s to c r a f t ma ster pieces soug ht a f ter by i n-t heknow curators at outdoor museums like Chicago’s Millennium Park and the new 606 downtown. But Southland residents have already had a chance to experience Booker’s work since 2014, and in a surprising setting. When you see Booker’s tire sculptures, you might expect an urban site such as Millennium Park. But visitors to the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park at Governors State University in south suburban University Park have already seen Booker’s impressive pieces a nd had a cha nce to meet her personally. As a featured Solo Exhibition Series artist in this museum-on-the-prairie, Booker debuted her works Serendipit y, What’s Not, and Meeting Ends and attended the Park’s 2014 Carts & Cocktails fundraiser as an honored guest. As a Visiting Artist sponsored by BMO Harris Bank, she met with the University’s students and volunteer community board to talk about her art and her motivation for the works. T he Nat ha n Ma n i low Sc u lpt u re Park’s Director Geoffrey Bates is the man behind the for ward-thinking ex hibition series, which brought these remarkable works even before other examples made their way to the Chicago art scene. When asked why he chose Ms. Booker’s pieces, Bates said “Chakaia Booker transforms the most mundane material – automobile tires – into large-scale artworks that challenge our sense of scale and what art might be. The way she manipulates rubber, creating textures that recall chain-mail, rising spring shoots, or even hairstyles is remarkable. She’s recognized throughout the world as a pioneer artist, having ex hibited on every continent except Antartica, and we are thrilled she has agreed to extend her exhibition at the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park.” The Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park is open from dawn until dusk and is free to the public 365 days per year.

WOODROW WILCOX O n Ma y 2 , 2 016 , I helped a client send a compla int a nd request for assistance to our local congressman – who voted for Obamacare. Due to complications caused by Oba maca re a nd t he Ma rket plac e, o u r c l i e n t ’s m o n t h l y insura nce pay ment jumped from $ 91.40 to $327.40. She and the agent helping her have spent hou r s com mu n ic at i ng with Marketplace bu reaucrats to resolve the underlying problem. But, Marketplace has not been transparent. This caused our client to be pushed to a nd may be past a deadline for her to act – simply because the government Marketplace won’t cooperate to resolve the problem. Here, with a few edits to protect the privacy of our client, is some of the letter to the congressman. ### Ma rketplace has a n appeal process. But, what should or can the client appeal without knowing the specific information t hat Ma rket place isn’t disclosing that it wants? The appeal process will take more than 30 days. But, the client will lose her insurance if she does not pay the $327.40 right away. As a small business owner who is drawing on sav ings to get t hrough a tou g h t i me for her business, her f inancia l For sale: Gently used scrubs, medical uniforms, 2 for $3; white lab coats new $3 each. 708-481-6907
resources are dwindling. If she does not pay for t he insura nce, t hen Ma rket place w i l l have effectively forced her to become a person subject to an I.R.S. penalty. This is not fair or just to any sma ll business person. But, this is the kind of result that the Affordable Care Act – “Obamacare” can cause. ### The congressman was one of the irresponsible members of Congress who voted for the Obamacare law without reading it or allowing the citizens to read it and tell him what t he cit i zens t houg ht of it . MWRD Oak Sapling Distributions A new initiative designed to restore the urban canopy and manage Cook County’s stormwater will continue as the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) begins distributing free saplings to residents of Cook County at six water reclamation plants every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon. The MWRD will distribute the free tree saplings beginning May 4 at the Calumet, Egan, Kirie, Hanover Park, O’Brien and Stickney water reclamation plants. In addition, the MWRD will distribute free trees during public tours and open houses on Saturday, May 21, from 9 am to noon at these facilities. T he M W R D’s ne w prog r a m i s ca l led “Restore t he Ca nopy, Pla nt a Tree.” Trees are an important part of Chicago’s ecosystem. They provide rain absorption and a canopy that reduces city heat island effects. They also absorb carbon gasses and produce oxygen. “There is no limit to the benefits that trees, especially oak trees, provide to our region,” said MWRD President
Mariyana Spy ropoulos. “Trees can keep neighborhoods cooler and lower energy bills, provide oxygen and shade, buffer noise, provide protection from wind, and most importantly in our case, absorb water. We invite schools, community groups, and municipalities in our area to participate, and together build our canopy.” The saplings will be individually potted. Planting and care instructions, a long w it h additiona l information regarding the benefits of trees, will
be provided. Photos can be posted on Facebook or Tw itter @mw rdgc #myMWRDtree. The MWRD is mapping the location a nd neig hborhoods of where t he canopy is being replenished so a street address of where trees are to be planted is requested upon receipt. What Can Golf Teach You About Retirement Planning? BOB KRYGSHELD I f y ou’r e a g ol f e r, you know the joys (and occasional frustrations) of the game. But you might not realize that some of the lessons you learn on the links can carry over to ot her a reas of your life – such as retirement planning. S o w he t he r y ou’r e a l ready ret i red or a re planning to retire in the next few years, consider the following suggestions: • Tr y to overcome t he “y ips.” W hen you miss those short puts – the ones you know you should be making – you might be in the grip of the “yips.” A s you k now, it ’s not a lw ay s ea s y to sha ke this problem, but many golfers have benefited by working to improve their concentration, especially by adhering to a strict pr e - s h ot a nd i n- s h ot s t e p -b y- s t e p r ou t i n e . W hen invest ing for retirement, or managing t heir portfolios during retirement, many people can get the investment version of the yips – that is, they get nervous during market downturns, and then they make mistakes, such as selling qua lit y investments when their pr ice has dropped. (Remember the first rule of investing: Buy low and sell high.) To overcome this type of yips, the solution is the same as for golf: Maintain your focus and concentrate on making appropriate moves, such a s bu i ld i ng a nd maintaining a diversified portfolio that’s suitable for your needs, goals and risk tolerance. • Forget about that holein-one. It’s every golfer’s d rea m : a hole-i n-one. When you tee up on that tempting par 3, and you’re feeling good, you might just want to go for it – but when you do, you could end up overshooting the green or plunking into the water. Many investors also For sale: Vintage Madame Alexander dolls 12” in original box, wrist tag + stand. Degas Girl #1575, Pinkie #1350. $40 each. 708481-6907 For sale: Water cooler, hot/ cold fridge in bottom, jug type. Ideal for office or shop $80 obo. 708-837-9814
try for a “hole-in-one,” in the form of pursuing that one “hot” stock t hat’s going to make them rich. However, by t he t i me they hear about such a stock (if it even exists), it may have already cooled off – and, in any case, it might not be right for their needs. Instead of looking for t hat ultimate, onetime winner, look for solid investments that you’d be comfortable holding for the long term. • Study the course. The more you know about a course you’re going to play, the better off you will be. W hen planning for your retirement, or even when you’re living it, you also need a strategy, one that addresses questions such as these: How can I structure my investment mix to provide me with a long-ter m i ncome stream? How much should I w i t h d r a w f r om m y portfolio each year? When should I start taking Social Security? Am I doing all I can to control investmentrelated taxes? • Visualize. Consider these words from World Golf Hall of Famer Nick Faldo: “Visualization is the most powerful thing we have.” If you can visualize what you want to do on each hole you play, you a re well on your way toward a successful round. The same idea holds true for retirement planning: If you can envision the type of retirement lifestyle you want, you’ll be more likely to achieve it by sticking with appropriate financial and investment strategies. So, there you have them – some ideas that play well on the golf course and in the retirement arena. Put them to work soon. Award-Winning Script Writing Remains Consistent The Communication and Creative Arts department script writing students of Purdue University Northwest’s Hammond campus have regularly created award-winning work that has been recognized by the Broadcast Education A ssociat ion since 2002. This yea r, four of t he eig ht submissions won awards for achievement by the BEA. The BEA Student Script Writing Award Ceremony was held during the BEA Convention on April 17 in Las Vegas. BEA is the premiere international academic media orga n i zat ion, d r iv i ng i nsig hts, excel lence i n med ia product ion, a nd ca reer adva ncement for educators, students, and professionals. Annually, the BEA hosts the Festival of Media Arts competitions for faculty and students highlighting outstanding media accomplishments. Purdue University Northwest’s Hammond students have submitted their scripts to the BEA student script writing competition ever y yea r a nd have been successf ul in receiving awards most years. Purdue University Calumet has competed with prestigious universities such as San Jose State University, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Missouri State University and California State University, Northridge. Mary Beth O’Connor, an associate professor in the Communication and Creative Arts department who teaches a variety of broadcasting and advertising courses including script writing, said she is exceedingly proud of her students and the professional level of their work and effort. “I’m proud to be a part of a department that allows and encourages creativity and discourages mediocrity when it comes to teaching,” O’Connor said. The award-winning script writing students (left to right) Ryan Maxwell, Aaron Davis, Victoria Montanez and Mickey Vincent submerge themselves into the scene as they prepare for their presentation of “Bates Motel: A Lamb to the Slaughter.” ___________________________________
Throughout the years of teaching the class, O’Connor has taught each student a unique process to writing a script. This process is taught to the next incoming script writing students, which further prepares them for possible competition submissions. Along with O’Connor’s guidance, the students each implement a style of their own into their work. Andrew Morris, a communication graduate student at Purdue University Calumet, was awarded 1st place in the BEA student script writing competition for his script “In Persona Christi,” in the short film category. He said the award is another form of acknowledgment that helps give meaning to his work.

“It’s a first step for me. It’s the beginning and not the end,” Morris said. “Everything you write is a lesson.” Morris said that he feels a sense of community when collaborating or working with peers and faculty. He said his peers and O’Connor help with the development process when it comes to the creative element. “Mary Beth and Purdue really give you the framework,” Morris said. “If the idea is the same as when you started, then you have not gone through the creative process.” There were many other award recipients including “Bates Motel: A Lamb to the Slaughter,” which won 2nd place in the television specs series category and was written by students Aaron Davis, Ryan Maxwell, Victoria Montanez and Mickey Vincent. O’Connor understa nds t he compet it ive nature of the working class, and the entertainment industry is no exception. “The BEA script writing competition is highly prestigious and competitive. So winning this award, or coming from a program that consistently wins these awards, will go a long way on student resumes in giving them a competitive edge,” O’Connor said. O’Connor said that by winning these competitions consistently, the students show that they can take on the challenges of the entertainment industry and succeed. “It says that students were born and raised in Northwest Indiana are just as talented as those born and raised in Hollywood,” O’Connor said.
