Lest We Forget As Memorial Day approaches, we remember several significant anniversaries: the end of the Civil War, 150 years ago, and the end of the Second World War, 70 years ago. In addition, let’s remember, with gratitude, those who gave their lives in all of our wars to secure and defend the freedoms we enjoy. Let’s remember our veterans. Many have returned home as wounded warriors, often with invisible scars. Let’s remember their families also who share in their sacrifices and sufferings. “Lest We Forget” became a solemn slogan after the First World War – a call to the living not to forget those who paid the ultimate price. In the midst of all our parading and grilling this Memorial Day, let’s pause to remember and bless veterans and their families in some way as we have opportunity. “Lest We Forget” also reminds us that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. As we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, we do well to remember the evil of race-based slavery and the ugly legacy it spawned in a nation built on the principle that all men are created equal. As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, we do well to remember the horrors of the holocaust in a world where genocide is all too common. As the tantalizing scents of sizzling steak and charcoal waft over town this Memorial Day, we do well to remember that few in history have enjoyed the rights and freedoms we do here and now. We enjoy them, thanks to the sacrifices of others on and off the battlefield. Pra i r ie State Col lege (PSC) is host i ng t wo Civ ic Leadership Academy (CL A) workshops on campus this summer. Workshops offer specialization tracks for elected and appointed leaders and managers in government and nonprofit agencies. The first, “Leadership for Newly Elected or Appointed Officials,” is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday, May 18. The second, “Fundraising & Financial Management for Nonprofits,” is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, June 9. During the May 18 workshop, attendees will learn which laws have a major impact on the administration of local government operations and discern the differing roles and responsibilities of elected officials and staff. Topics include the Freedom of Information Act, Open Meetings Act, the roles and responsibilities of elected officials and staff, and mandates from the state and federal governments. Attendees of t he June 9 workshop w ill learn how nonprofit financial management is all about discipline to build a solid revenue base, well-supported budget, clear financial objectives and policies and the discipline to keep to the plan. The workshop is intended to help attendees evaluate where their organization is today. It is recommended to bring copies of the organization’s budget and most recent 990 form. Both workshops will be held in the Conference Center room 1318 on the college’s main campus, located at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights. Each workshop has a registration fee of $90. The CL A is offered by the Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University. PSC has partnered with CLA in response to the demand for increased services and workshops throughout the region. Participants may take individual workshops or complete a series of courses towards the goal of earning a general or specialized Certificate of Achievement. Thornton Quarry Transitional Reservoir Will Add Storage Capacity For Stormwater T he Met ropol ita n Water Re c l a m at ion D i s t r ic t of Gr e at er Ch icago (M W R D) has reached a n agreement that will allow space for an additional 4.5 billion gallons of storage capacit y for combined sewage and stormwater, reducing f looding in the south suburbs. T he M W R D wa s g ra nted a n extension to its easement with Hanson Material Service Corporation, which is mining the quarr y. The $750,000 a n nua l i nvest ment w i l l a l low t he MWRD to continue to use the Thornton Transitional Reservoir for storage of floodwater from Thorn Creek through 2020. Terms of the deal were approved by the MWRD Board of Commissioners on April 23. “This is a great opportunit y for the district and the south suburbs,” s a id M W R D P re sident Ma r i y a n a

It is located in the lower west lobe of the Thornton Quarry across the interstate highway from the Thornton Composite Reservoir. When it is complete this summer, the Thornton Composite Reservoir will hold up to 7.9 billion gallons of combined sewage and stormwater from 14 communities throughout the south suburbs and South Side of Chicago, making it one of the largest reservoirs of its kind in the world. Calumet City & MWRD Rain Barrel Program
The city of Calumet City is happy to team up with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and participate in the rain barrel program. Free rain barrels are available to residents if your home meets the requirements as a qualified household. You can make a difference to help improve water quality, prevent flooding and save on your water bill! Disconnecting your downspouts from the sanitary sewer, and installing rain barrels will keep clean water out of the sewer system and provide you with a source of free water. The rain barrel program is a cooperative effort by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and participating communities. Rain barrels capture rainwater from your roof and save it for when you need it. By keeping this water out of the sewer system, they can also help prevent sewer overflows and flooding. You can use rain barrel water to wash your car, water your lawn, or clean work boots and tools. Rain barrel water is naturally free of chlorine, lime, and calcium and some gardeners swear their plants prefer it. However, since rain barrel water is runoff from your roof, do not drink it! If you have areas of unpaved, pervious ground near your downspouts, rain barrels should work in your yard. Homeowners throughout Cook County have incorporated rain barrels into their yards with great results. Green and upcycled rain barrels are a type of green infrastructure, a new approach to managing stormwater by keeping rain on the property and out of the sewer system. These rain barrels are also made using repurposed, or upcycled, food barrels so they are doubly green. Requirements to receive free rain barrel In order to qualify to receive free rain barrels, you must meet a few requirements: • live within a community that is participating in the rain barrel program; • own property with downspouts that are directly connected to the sanitary sewer system; • agree to disconnect all of your downspouts and place rain barrels on each downspout, where feasible; • agree to properly use and maintain your rain barrels. Don’t meet the requirements? Don’t worry! All Cook County residents are eligible to purchase low-cost rain barrels from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. ANNA M. CAISON My favorite Mother’s Day scripture is found in Isaiah 49:15-16. Here the Lord personifies His love for His people as a nursing mother! “Can a woman forget her sucking ch i ld, t hat she shou ld not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands;” (KJV) What an awesome expression of love. In its context Israel is in captivity to her enemies as a result of her disobedience to God. And though she feels abandon and forgotten, God uses the Prophet Isaiah to express His continued love and care for His people. We often see God’s love expressed in scripture as that of a father or husband, but here we see a description of His love that is synonymous to mothers. It has been said that when it comes to parents dealing with difficult children, a mother’s love and patience far exceeds that of the father. Yet there comes a time when even mothers become exhausted and give up. But God, in this passage of scripture has committed Himself to the faithful rearing, nurturing and care of His
people despite their inconsistencies and shortcomings. Though He chasten, He still loves. It’s comforting to know that when life seems to be crashing in all around us; be it chastisement for sin, or suffering as a servant of Christ, we can crawl into the arms of a loving Father. For we are His work ma nsh ip created in Ch r ist Jesus. Nothing and no one can separate us, or pluck us out of His hands. We are permanently and perpetually secure in His faithfulness to us. Many times in the midst of failure, disobedience and distress, I’ve crawled into the arms of the Father via sincere a nd humble prayer. It is here t hat I experience His comforting and forgiving presence, the sweet smelling fragrance of His breath drying the tears from my eyes, reassuring me with memories of His past faithfulness with the promise of continued faithfulness of His love and care for me today and forever more. Lindsey Lagestee is a hometown girl, born and raised in South Holland, who sings lead vocals for this area's ultimate country party band. Lindsey has been singing for years as her parents Vaughn Lagestee and Linda Pratscher Lagestee can tell you. She received piano lessons from Mr. Bill DeYoung and Bev Tysse and also took home first place in the 'Lansing Idol' contest last year. There has always been plenty of music in the Lagestee household! Calvin Christian School and Illiana Christian High School provided Lindsey's education, and she contributed to the softball and volleyball teams, while earning honor roll status. While Lindsey is not singing her favorite country songs she still manages to keep quite busy. Lindsey has completed 2 years of pre-pharmacy studies at Lewis University and is currently in her first year of medical school at Midwest University in Downers Grove. The Towle Theater is proud to host a Tony Party to raise funds for the ever-growing Towle Youth Theater Ensemble. Goodbye, Child Care Costs … Hello, College Savings Opportunities BOB KRYGSHELD If you’re a work i ng parent, you know firsthand about the difficulties of finding quality, affordable care for your children. But eventually, your kids head off to school, and those child care bills go away, or at least diminish greatly. When that happens, you could start putting away money for another one of your children’s milestones: college. Just how expensive is child care? The national average for a 4-year-old at a child care center is approximately $7,880 per year, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Huma n Ser v ices. W hat could you do w ith this money once your child enters kindergarten? For t he purposes of illustration, let’s presume you ca n f i na l ly say “goodbye” to child care costs when your child is in first grade, and let’s also assume your child is attending a public school. If you invested that $7,880 ever y year for 12 years, until your child reaches 18, you could accumulate more t ha n $150,000 in a tax-advantaged college savings account, such as a 529 plan — assuming the money was placed in a hypothetical investment that earned 7% per year. (Keep in mind, though, whenever you put money in any variable investment, there are no guarantees.) Actually, earnings in a 529 pla n accumulate and are distributed ta x free, prov ided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. HOW TO CATCH A THIEF--DIXON, ILLINOIS STYLE: By now most everyone has heard about the infamous Rita Crundwell, Treasurer of Dixon, Illinois who, between 1983 and 2012 managed to make off with $53 million of city funds. A fellow staff member (there only 3 full time employees) discovered her secret bank account in early 2012 and that led the paper trail for the FBI who watched and waited for 6 months. That took care of the criminal aspect, but the hero who recovered most of the money for the tiny town mid-state (Ronald Regan’s hometown) is Chicago attorney Devon C. Bruce, a partner with Power Rogers and Smith. Devon was the guest speaker during the May luncheon meeting of the Calumet Area Industrial Commission. And his talk was fascinating. He asked all the questions we did. “How could this take place? You mean no one saw any of this happening”? Apparently the answer lay with the accounting firms hired by Dixon which lacked oversight (Rita played on their softball team. She had the auditors over to her house for dinner, they ‘trusted’ her). So, asleep at the switch, the auditors apparently overlooked the clues. In all Rita created 177 fake invoices for capitol project work that was never done in Dixon. Devon filed a civil suit then followed the same paper trail the FBI did and managed to get back most of all the missing money, ($40 plus million) in an accounting and banking malpractice suit. His take on all this--”Professional skepticism is Accounting 101. It should have been in place, but wasn’t,” he said of the errant accounting firm. He did not fault the city fathers, all of whom worked part time. There have been numerous documentaries on this situation and in depth stories written in various magazines. Rita Crundwell was sentenced in 2013 to 235 months in prison. She has not commented since her sentencing.
