Officers from the Lansing Police Department will be taking part in the “COP on Rooftop” fundraiser event which takes place Friday, May 30, 2013—between the hours of 5:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Lansing Dunkin’ Donuts, 17733 Torrence Ave. All donations collected that day will go to support Special Olympics Illinois. Over the past four years The Lansing Police Department has raised over $7000.00 through this fundraiser. Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois will be taking part in this event as well. All persons making a donation that day will be given a coupon for a free donut. For every $10 donation received, the person making the donation will be given a Torch Run/Dunkin’ Donuts stainless steel coffee mug and coupon for a free coffee, valid that day only. Also for sale that day will be official Torch Run merchandise and Harley-Davidson raffle tickets. Torch Run hats and T-shirts are $15 each, lapel pins are $5 each and Harley tickets are $10 each. All proceeds from these sales goes to Special Olympics Illinois. We hope to see a large turnout of people from the community who will generously support this very worthy organization.

Genesius Guild to present Regional Premiere of “Jellofish” The Genesius Guild of First Unites Methodist Church of Hammond brings to the stage the regional premiere of a new work, “Jellofish,” written by Valparaiso resident and Guild Member Jim Henr y. The play is set to go up weekends, May 9-18, 2014. T he stor y beh i nd “Jel lof ish” is that of reflection on the past, as well as trepidation about the future. In the play, four World War II veterans have been playing a monthly game of poker since 1945. The game has turned into not only a tradition, but a means of chronicling the lives and relationships of the players, as well. They’ve been dragging five percent from every pot for over 50 years and this “side pot” has grown to a sizable fortune. Who will survive this game of wits and be the heir presumptive to the poker fortune? Or will competition and resentment destroy their friendships and the game itself? This poignant portrayal of three lifelong friends, poker buddies, and war veterans will make the audience both laugh and take notice of the strong inter persona l relat ionships of t he characters. “It re a l l y i s qu ite a touch i ng play that gets at the heart of what relationships mean, how they change over time, how memories can either strengthen or haunt us,” says Genesius Boa rd Member a nd director La rr y Hinken. “There is almost a running metaphor of the game of life in the poker game unfolding on stage.” T he Gu i ld product ion feat u res

GOD WITH US
The Just Shall Live by Faith ANNA M. CAISON D u r i n g t h e t i m e of H a b a k k u k the nation of Israel had become ver y cor r upt. T he gover n ment per ver ted justice, selling it to the highest bidder while oppressing the righteous. The priest took bribes, and men (women) defrauded their neighbor. The land had become filled with violence and rebellion against God. Sounds like a description of our time, doesn’t it! What does it mean to “live by faith”? It means persevering through hardships and trials by keeping our eyes fixed on the Savior. Remember, we are not alone in anything we go through. He is right there beside us working things out for our good. It means not taking vengeance on those who got away with doing us w rong. God sa id vengea nce is His ; He will bring judgment to those who mistreat us. It means not allowing the corrupt practices of the world to become a way of life in us. We must continue to emulate Christ in all things. And when we complete our journey here there is a Crown of Life and a “Well done good and faithful servant” from the Savior when we come into His presence. For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net. Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.
Corruption, its ever y where ! Like a virus it has infected our government, businesses and schools, the communities in which we live; and yes, even among the ekklesia, corruption exists. All of us at some point in our life either directly or indirectly, will feel the effect of our corrupt society. Twice since the year began I’ve been caught in the fallout of this infectious d isease. I went t h roug h t he proper channels to resolve the issue; answering questions, filling out forms, responding to the automated city worker’s prompts, and sat through 30 minutes of live legal jargon; and still my appeal for justice went unfulfilled. Frustrated and angry I began to cry out to God. “Lord, what am I supposed to do? How do I deal with this! How are we, your people to live in this world when we’re surrounded by corruption? Even the agencies whose pu r pose is to protect cit i zens f rom unscrupulous employers and unethical officials are tainted! How are we to live?” In the moment of silence that followed my anxious prayer for direction, I caught a g limpse of Haba k ku k as he stood watch waiting for the Lord to answer his frustrated plea regarding the corruption of his day. “The Just Shall Live by Faith, Anna,” I heard the Holy Spirit say. “The Just Shall Live By Faith.” Help Wanted: Landscaping Company looking for experienced labors. Featuring Loretta Anne Woodward Veney Author, Being My Mom’s Mom
For the dependable service and solutions you need — call Van Drunen Heating Co.
Throughout her life, Loretta has chronicled family events through journals, photos, and videos, seeking to capture every moment. After learning that her beloved mother Doris was the first female in the family to suffer from dementia, Loretta began documenting the details of doctor visits, and recording people, places, and things as a substitute for her Mom’s lost memory.
RECEIVE UP TO A
The combination of written documentation and her incredible memory became Loretta’s first published work, entitled Being My Mom’s Mom. Through her book, Loretta offers practical ideas and a wealth of encouragement for her readers. Don’t miss your opportunity to learn from Loretta and hear her speak about her journey.

Athlete’s Feet
Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. If you have any questions concerning athlete’s feet or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

LANSING POLICE MEET & GREET...
I attended the meet and greet at Lansing McDonald’s sponsored by the Lansing Police Department last week. They reached out to everyone who attended and provided valuable information about our community and safety tips as a resident. I am so proud of our police department and I encourage everyone if they have another event to attend. It will be worth the experience. Keep up the great work! Speak Out is your chance to express your opinion, anonymously. You can e-mail us at general@myshopper.biz. Please keep your comments as short as possible. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My neighbor has a fence that crosses about two feet onto my property and runs that way for about ten feet. I was told by the owner, before I bought, that the fence “might cross onto my property.” The property line was not clearly staked. A year ago I had the property surveyed and the fence indeed crosses. I have lived here two years. The neighbors are private and we do not talk. What are my rights? Is there a time limit before the property becomes theirs? A nswer : W hat you may have is a n “easement by prescription;” that is, the use of your land w ithout permission by someone else. There are a variety of standards to establish such an easement, but one thing is clear: If you don’t object then over time your neighbor may gain a permanent right to use the property. You need to speak with an attorney. One question to ask is how long the fence has been in place. Most likely a letter from your lawyer, sent by certified mail with a return receipt, will resolve the matter. Question: We’re getting ready to buy a house. This is a gorgeous home in terms of design and space. However, the hardwood f loors a re bad ly da maged a nd need replacing and several repairs need to be

done. This will cost us a huge amount of money, at least 10 percent of list price. We’re trying to negotiate so that these damages are taken into account to bring the price down. If the sellers agree to this lower price, how does this impact the future resale value of the house? Answer: It doesn’t. Homes are for sale at today’s market values. W hat someone paid in the past is irrelevant. No buyer would pay a higher price because the seller overpaid, and in the same manner no buyer will get a discount because a seller bought many years ago at a low price. Example: A local property is for sale at $300,000+. The owner paid $45,000 many year ago. Does anyone believe the seller should get less than market value? Does the seller believe that? Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. M.T.M.

Governors State University Unveils Its New Mascot W hen Governors State Universit y at hletics begins intercollegiate play in the fall, its opponents will face off against the GSU Jaguars. The university unveiled the Jaguar mascot recently, after conducting a search that took several months and included input from faculty, staff, student and the surrounding community. “The university is growing and having a mascot is an important component to a rich experience for our students,” sa id Courtney Sa nders, v ice president of enrollment management and marketing. “A mascot is an identifying symbol for a university, an important tool for building a tradition. We are thrilled to start building long-lasting traditions as the GSU Jaguars.” The university began its search in February by taking suggestions from students, staff, faculty and residents of the surrounding communities. It received over 400, more than half of which were unique. The university’s search committee then voted to narrow the choices down to four finalists: the Jaguars, the Prairie Wolves, the Gladiators and the Bengals. After an artist designed sketches of what the mascot could look like, the university then put the choice to an open vote online. The university received an overwhelming response, logging over 30,000 online votes. Sanders said the university wanted to make the process as democratic as possible. With a mascot being an enduring symbol, the university wanted as much outside input as

Leave Lansing a Little Better The Lan-Oak Park District will accept nominations for the “Vince Award” in honor of long time park commissioner Wayne Vincent until Monday, June 16, 2014 at the Park District Administrative Office, 17551 Chicago Avenue to the attention of the Vice President of the Board of Commissioners. Eligible candidates for the “Vince Award” should be those persons who have left LanOak Park District a little better either as a present or former commissioner, staff or volunteer. Wayne Vincent served the Lan-Oak Park District for 20 years. He was instrumental in building the pool; acquiring and developing
neighborhood parks and assisted the Park District into becoming a great park and recreation system. The award will be presented at the Grand Old Fourth Celebration, July 4, 2014 at LanOak Park prior to the fireworks. Vince’s goal was to “Leave Lansing a Little Better.” There are many people in Lansing that work hard to make this a great place to live and recreate. Hopefully, you will nominate one of those persons. For more information regarding the “Vince Award”, please contact the Lan-Oak Park District at 474-5020.

Seton Academy was t he f irst Archdiocesan High School to use laptops in the classrooms eight years ago. Each student has been issued a school laptop on which up to 70% of their books were imaged. They used these throughout the day in all of their classes and kept much of their notes and papers on them as well. As technology progressed so did our program, developing curriculum in house so that students would learn the hardware and software of the computers and ultimately have the opportunity to test and become an IBM/Lenovo A+ certified technician before graduation. When Mr. Steven Parker, the Executive Director of Technology, saw the aptitude and ability of Seton students, a partnership set with Purdue University Calumet was struck to introduce an entr y level engineering program in 2010. Now the evolution of technology is such that Seton Academy will transition to BYOD
and use mobile devices. Four device types were suggested to the families so that the Technology Resource Center could continue to support the students when they have problems. Essentially the requirement is that it must have at least a ten inch screen. Next year, to help transition the students for higher education, papers will be submitted via email nearly exclusively. Books will most ly be “cloud” based u n less t here is not an electronic version. Not only will this continue to make Seton Academy the “green school of choice” but the students will have the most current versions of books available. Furthermore, our parents will not incur outlandish hardcopy book bills. This is all in keeping with the nearly decade old technolog y env ironment created at Seton Academy. We look forward to a very smooth process with the conversion as our students already are on the cutting edge of technology from their experience here at Seton.
The Leading Edge
Truth and Trust RENEE N. HALE, DSL Tr ut h d ist i ng u ishes character in individuals and organizations. “Integrity” has secured its place in most companies’ corporate values systems. However, sometimes the inf luences of reputation, power and politics trump t he trut h. Leaders may believe that in evading, twisting, or telling halftruths, they may be able to finagle a better return on investment (monetary or otherwise)—and that the ends justif y the means. This is unethical and it is sometimes illegal; yet daily news stories inform us that it’s happening at ma ny levels, f rom t he complex financials of large corporations to the offices of small local businesses and organizations. W hen truth is trumped, t r ust is sure to fa il. Deception leads to broken relationships; followed by waning loya lt y, apat hy, a nd f i n a l l y r eje c t ion . Sound harsh? History has shown this trajectory. Sta rbuck s’ CEO, Howard Schultz, describes t he ef fect of decl i n i ng truthfulness in business. He says, “In the 1960s, if you i nt roduced a new product to A mer ica, 90% of t he people who viewed it for the first time believed in the corporate promise. Then 40 years later, if you performed the same exercise less than 10% of the public believed it was true. The fracturing of trust is based on the fact t hat t he consumer h a s b e e n l e t d o w n .”
This illustration shows t hat when cor porate tr ut h declines, so does consumer trust; declining company health follows. Leaders oug ht to l i sten to t he t r ut h of m at t er s e v en w hen it hur ts. Ack nowledge the truth and be bold in facing it toget her w it h your colleagues. Dealing with some conf lict now may seem difficult, but it is better than “putting out a fire” later if the truth is squelched. If you don’t know or understand the situation at hand, make ever y effort to discover the truth so that you can respond appropr iately. S e e k c l a r i t y f r om a l l parties involved and be careful not to substitute someone’s opi n ion for the truth. This applies to everything from working relationships to financial systems. W i nston Chu rch i l l sa id, “The tr ut h is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.” Be a leader who values truth in your business or organization. Ult i mately, t h is bu i lds trust among colleagues and clients, and naturally boosts return on investment. Dr. Renée N. Dolton Police Force Break Up Marijuana House

Why Do Buyers Low Ball? MIKE BUDER I’m of ten a ske d by sellers “what a re t hese people thinking? ” when a low of fer c ome s i n . The easy answer is “they aren’t thinking”, but the rea l t r ut h i s fa r more complex. At the heart of it all is always self-interest, which is the ver y same reason why sellers want to get the most money for their homes. The following are some motivations for buyers to low ball. 1. SPECUL ATION- Hey, y o u n e v e r k n o w, t h e seller might just go for it. Sadly there are some mud t hrowers in t his g roup who w i l l ma ke 10 low offers hoping one sticks. Some a re wa n na-be investors, others just want to live cheaply (do you blame them?). 2 . B A D A DV IC E - T he buyer’s agent made too m a ny pr om i s e s a b out what t hey could do for them, or their uncle Don t h i n k s he’s a w he eler dealer at Sunday dinner. 3. M E DI A H Y S T E R I ABanking to much on TV and newspapers reporting on national statistics that may not be consistent to local markets. 4. FE A R- Some buyers k now too ma ny people who have been hurt due to a job loss, declining values or both. They are far more cautious than they were 5 years ago. 5. CULTURE- Some buyers come from other countries a nd ma ke low of fers because that is just how they do business where they come from and they may have no idea t hat a low number would be
insulting. 6. MIXED SIGNALS- The bu yer m ig ht fe el t h at a v ac a nt home m ig ht have desperate ow ners or a house with no signs of a man is a divorce. If a buyer “smells blood” they will press their perceived adva ntage, accurate or not. 7. GENERIC RESEARCHGIGO (garbage in, garbage out) comes to mind, but no matter the source, be it Zillow or some other website that can appraise a home w it hout e v en entering it. Some people are just over influenced by collected data. In a l l t hese cases a seller’s response should be calm, calculated and u nemot iona l. Of fers are just a starting point. The rea l goa l is a good ending point (accepted contracts) and those start with an offer, no matter how high or low. It might be tempting to send a low offer packing, but the best thing to do is counter offer and negotiate. Mayor Rogers (center) inspects cash and valuables seized during drug bust operation.
Police Chief John Franklin displays seized marijuana to reporter. ________________________________________________________
Mayor Riley Rogers and Police Chief John Franklin held a press conference on Friday to announce the apprehension and shutdown of a major drug operation in Dolton. Dolton police said they found nearly a pound of marijuana when they responded to a call about a possible burglary at a home near University and Sibley Ave. The burglary suspects tried to get away, officials said, but were apprehended with $22,000 in cash on their persons. Officers then checked the house, where they said
they found $99,000 in cash and almost a pound of marijuana. A woman who said she lives in the home also faces charges. Police Chief Franklin commended the detectives and police officers for their work and also thanked the anonymous Dolton resident who called the police. Franklin said, “We are grateful for the phone call to assist us in this investigation and arrest. Please call my police department if you see anything suspicious – it helps us keep Dolton safe.”

The ReStore sells donated items to ra ise money for Habit at for Humanity of Northwest Ind ia na. T he store is located at 6114 West Ridge Road near Ridge Road and Colfa x Avenue near the Gary—Griffith border. ReStore manager Kim DeRisi is very proud of this accomplishment. She has managed the Lake County ReStore for the last four years. It has been open only nine years. “The ReStore supports the Lake County Habitat for Humanity to offer a ‘hand up and not a hand out’ to help people to h ave a home,” DeR i si explained. “People who want help from Habitat for Humanity must give over 300 hours of sweat equity to help Habitat for Humanity to help others.” DeRisi sa id t hat her location accepts new and used building materials, appl ia nc e s, f u r n it u re, home décor, housewares, doors, br ick, w i ndows, tools, cabinets, f looring, lu m b er, l ig ht i n g , a nd much more. goods from landfills last year alone. “We want more people to visit our location on a reg u la r schedu le. We d o n’t h a v e t h e s a m e things all the time. It’s like a treasure hunt every time you visit us,” DeRisi elaborated. Ty p i c a l p r i c e s a t The ReStore are doors at $10 a nd enter ta inment cabinets at $25. “We’d like to get more appliances donated. We prov ide a f ree pick up service and give receipts for donated items,” DeRisi emphasized. T here a re over 80 0 ReStores in the U.S. There a r e s ome Re Stor e s i n Canada and one ReStore just opened in Ireland. All the ReStores raise money to suppor t Habitat for Hu ma n it y. The food and music were inspired and everyone had a great time celebrating with the happy couple! Parents of the bride are Jim (late) and Nancy Small and parents of Adam are Dean and Betty Triller.
