South Suburban College Men’s Basketball player, sophomore guard Michael Harris (East Chicago Central HS) was named NJCAA Division II NATIONAL Player-of-theYear. This is the first “National” Player of the Year for Head Men’s Basketball Coach John Pigatti. It is also the first for the South Suburban College Athletic Department in recent history. Harris averaged 23.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.2 assist, and 3.3 steal per game during the 2012-13 season. He played in the NJCAA National All Star Game May 11th, at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, NV. This award puts the cap on all of the accomplishments acquired by Harris this season. He was named Region IV-A Player-of -the Year, Region IV-A Tournament MVP, and NJCAA 1st Team All American. During Harris’ two seasons at South Suburban his teams had a record of 65-9. The 65 wins are the most for any player in the history of the school. This season South Suburban finished 32-5 and placed 6th at the NJCAA National Tournament.

A high-resolution Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner, called Naviscan® is used to perform PEM. PEM scanners are high-resolution breast PET systems that show the location as well as the metabolic phase of a breast mass or growth. The metabolic view allows the physician to make the optimal cancer care decision, for masses as small at 1.6 mm, the size of a grain of rice, by providing an unprecedented ability to distinguish between benign (noncancerous) and malignant (cancerous) masses. “Finding breast cancer at the earliest stage possible gives each patient the best chance of an excellent outcome,” Hoess said. “With PEM technology, we have the ability to better determine if cancer is present or not. Unlike mammography, 3D tomography, ultrasound or MRI, this imaging system shows how tissue behaves to determine whether it is cancer behavior or normal breast tissue behavior and it’s making a difference for our patients,” he said. The Annual Cancer Symposium is sponsored by the Community Cancer Research Foundation, Inc. working toward the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Get Started On Summer: Donate Blood With summer around the corner, and the end of the school year in sight, new and eligible blood donors are urged to help strengthen the blood supply by volunteering to give in the next few weeks. “While summer signals rest and relaxation for a lot of us, it’s also a time we can work together to ensure blood is there for hospital patients,” said Sharyn Whitman, CEO for the IndianaOhio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. Low blood supplies are typical from late May through September because regular donors and their families become busy with summer fun and may neglect to donate blood. At the same time, blood needs rise as increased roadway and travelrelated accidents drain supplies—particularly during high travel weekends like Memorial Day. Someone seriously injured in an automobile accident, for instance, may need up to 40 units of blood for their emergency care. Every day, patients across the U.S. need an average of 38,000 units of blood. And while that need doesn’t change with the season, the American Red Cross typically sees a dip in blood donations during the summer months. That dip, Red Cross officials say, is partly due to high school and college students being on summer break, and not giving through regularly scheduled school drives. About 20 percent of the blood supply is

South Holland Lion’s Club Promotes A New “Shop Local” Campaign The South Holland Lion’s Club is a volunteer service club organization and part of Lion’s Club International, the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.3 million members in more than 200 countries around the world. South Holland ‘s Lions Club was founded in 1946 and has carried on a strong tradition of helping our community through a variety of fundraisers, projects and events. The South Holland Lions Club has raised money to plant trees in public areas, supported the construction of the Gouwen’s Park Sports Complex and donated funding for the South Holland Community Center . The Lions have provided people and funding to support blood drives, hearing tests and other health screenings for residents. Additionally, the South Holland Lions provide medical equipment such as wheel chairs, hospital beds, crutches and shower chairs when needed by South Holland residents. The primary mission of the Lions Club is to help the vision impaired in

our community and throughout the world. Glasses are collected locally by the South Holland Lions and sent overseas to people that might not otherwise be able to afford them. Lions clubs also support medical research for the blind. Lions also assist the special needs for our local vision and hearing impaired residents. Two popular events the South Holland Lion’s Club hosts are the Pancake Breakfast in the Spring and the Chili Dinner in the Fall. Funds raised from these events help provide assistance for all the Lions activities as well as financial support for Leader Dogs for the Blind and Lighthouse for the Blind. The South Holland Lion’s are trying to find new ways to help more people in our community and to involve more people in our efforts. The South Holland Lions launched a new Shop Local Program this year to try to support the local business through the ticket sales for the upcoming 2013 Chili Dinner. An elderly woman from the Glen Park area of Gary asked me for help with a Medicare medical bill problem. She is a client of the insurance agency where I work. Here are the problems: The sign has posted “Open House” on Sunday. Nowhere did it say “Sale Pending,” and, the sellers agent has the Sunday paper advertising it with an open house. We confronted the sellers’ agent at the open house and she says that her clients insisted they advertise & show the open house, and she was telling everyone that a sale was pending. We asked that there be no more open houses, and this was not honored. What are the ramifications to the sellers, the seller’s agent, and us the buyers? A. You made an offer on a home, which has been accepted. If the transaction goes to closing you will be the new owners. Unfortunately, until closing, you are NOT the owners. Prior to closing, the property does not belong to you and you have no right to discourage a barbecue in the backyard, a party in the basement, or an open house. I feel for you because you are worried that somehow you could lose this home to another buyer who loves the home as much as you do! Most likely that will NOT happen. The home will soon be yours. But, the sellers remain the owner. The Good Neighbor Parade 2013 on Saturday, May 4 in Lansing was a huge success and so much fun! The theme was: Lansing’s Three Hour Tour. The weather was perfect! This iconic Lansing event, with well over 100 entries, went off without a hitch 2 p.m. at the corner of Ridge and Wentworth. The parade headed west to Torrence, then north to 179th, and east into Lan-Oak Park, where the Lansing Lions cooked 1350 hot dogs (donated by Ultra Foods) and served them along with pop to parade participants. So many helping hands made this year’s parade exceptional! Many thanks to Fire, Police and Public Works departments of the Village of Lansing, LNN Channel 4 for capturing the event for broadcast, Carrie Steinweg for her albums of photographs made available to everyone, all the volunteers who helped with parade staging/lineup, our 3 Judges, and all the behind the scenes work and direction of the actual parade by Chamber Administrative Assistant, Sue Seymour. Community Garden Planting Day Due to impending rain, the It Takes a Village: Community Garden first planting day has been postponed to Wednesday, May 15 th at 12 p.m. and Saturday May 18 th at 12 p.m. The It Takes a Village: Community Garden Initiative works to replace abandoned, dilapidated homes and lots with urban community gardens that provide sustainable food for those in need, increase a sense of community and partnership, while also beautifying crumbled spaces that are both safety and health risks. A couple years ago, when the royal couple in England was getting married there were lots of parties and hype as everyone watched with great anticipation the wedding of the century. “I did too”, said Rebecca Holwerda of Schererville, IN “in fact I threw a viewing party which included everyone dressing up, an aisle runner, and even a wedding cake. You would have thought you were attending a real wedding.” Fast forward two years, news broke there would be a royal heir born this summer. Immediately, friends started asking Holwerda what she was going to do. She spoke with her friend, Mel Bendle of St John, IN and they decided to use the media interest and pop culture buzz about the impending arrival of the royal baby to engage people to do something positive in the community. They were going to host a Royal Baby Shower in honor of the royal baby being born in England and collect baby items to benefit moms in need. After all, whether life is planned or unplanned, we are all royal heirs to the Kingdom! PASS Pregnancy Care Centers with offices in South Holland, Lansing, and Tinley Park and the Women’s Care Center of NWI located in Hammond mission is to help women who have unplanned pregnancies choose life. The women take parenting classes and receive credits they use in the organization’s boutique to purchase baby items they would otherwise not be able to get. Susan Wilson Executive Director for PASS said, “We are thrilled about the Royal Baby Shower and partnering with the Women’s Care Center on a joint project that touches so many women in a positive way throughout the south suburbs and northwest Indiana.” From April 28-May 28, there are over 25 entities participating including churches, organizations, schools, and women’s groups. It was standing room only last Monday as the new Dolton administration was sworn in. Honorable Appellate Court Judge Nathaniel House Jr. administered the oaths of office to newly elected Village President Riley H. Rogers and trustees. The official swearing-in ceremony and reception welcomed the new leadership and a fresh direction to the village. The newly elected officials pledged to work toward various village improvements. Mayor Riley Rogers said. “Thank you so much for joining

me and the other newly elected village officials and incumbent trustees on this special day. We ran on a positive message of making Dolton more open to the needs of residents. That is why we were elected and why we are here today. That is a vital part of our mission. It’s urgent that we come together as a village. I am confident that, together, we will meet any challenge and lay the groundwork for a brighter future for all of Dolton.” Along with Rogers, residents welcomed newly elected Clerk Mary Kay Duggan, newly elected Trustees Tiffany Henyard,

Stanley Brown, and Robert Hunt. The village president, new trustees and clerk join senior Trustees Sabrina Smith and Cathern Bendell on the village board. Rogers affirmed that along with managing the fiscal health of the village, top priorities for residents and his administration include being more responsive to residents’ needs, fighting crime and increasing police presence.

offenders perform a wide variety of work and are supervised by sworn officers. The Sheriff will also be conducting audits to make sure that our accounting and record keeping is accurate. I look forward to the results of these audits. Second – Many Dolton municipal cars were leaving the village overnight and on weekends. These cars will now be back in Dolton where we can account for them. This will save the village wear and tear on vehicles, and they will have an extended service life. Third – I have installed safeguards and accounting measures for the gas purchases in the Village. This will reduce and eliminate the unauthorized gas purchases for personal vehicles. Gas is now over $4/ gallon and we will make every effort to conserve this resource. Fourth – Chief John Franklin has been sworn in as our new police chief. This will usher in a new era of police accountability and increased police presence on the streets of Dolton. Chief John has an extensive background on premier police forces in the past and is a fantastic addition to the Village. I have much more to share with you in the weeks ahead. I and the Dolton Village Board will continue to work together for one purpose – to serve you the residents of Dolton. You are who we are responsible to and we will not forget that. From the moment we become serious about knowing God, we began a life journey of surrendering. He takes us a step at a time. Beginning with ourselves, we learn to go where He directs. Then, from the little things that we don’t mind giving up, to the

things that are difficult, we come to the place where we hold nothing back from Him. Believing and trusting in God’s unwavering love for us is the prerequisite for living a surrendered life. When we truly accept the fact that God loves us and has a plan for our life that includes a glorious future and a full and purposeful life in the present, we can let go of fear and walk in fellowship with Him. As we continue to grow in His love, surrendering to His will becomes a sought after desire of the heart. Our days will begin with, “Good morning Gracious Father, thank you for a good night sleep. Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE alice DEVRIES Spring weather has finally reached the Midwest and, oh how sweet it is! I’ve been painting outdoor light fixtures as an excuse to enjoy the beautiful weather. Because once summer hits, it’s almost too hot to paint outside. However, after reading an article about the bombing of Dresden*, I will never complain about heat again. In February of 1945, firebombs hit Dresden, Germany and caused the outdoor temperatures to rise up to 2700˚F. That’s no typo! It was impossible for people to escape, and at least 30,000 people died. This week’s letter was written in Germany, by Sgt. Robert Buetow, while he served on the 54th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. The letter was addressed to his wife. Thursday, March 1, 1945 My darling, It’s been several days now since I’ve written to you—almost a week—but I know you understand. From what you’ve been reading in the papers you probably know we’ve been pretty busy. Please don’t worry when you don’t receive mail for a while, darling. You know darn well I’m coming back to you safe and sound and we can start our married life all over again. We had a little rain all day today, but the weather hasn’t been too bad. I’m sorry to hear about Earl’s friend being missing.

Maybe his wife will get better news about him because perhaps he was captured. When I had laryngitis it was just a case of not being able to talk above a whisper. It cleared up in a couple of days. It was right after I got back from Paris, so maybe it was caused by the champagne I drank. Maybe it was too rich for my blood, or something. Wilbur Hodge began working on trees prior to being drafted into WWII. If your tree is in trouble, calling early can make a huge difference in the potential outcome. (Just like calling your doctor early if you notice a problem.) Eradicating the danger to your tree early can be the difference between simply requiring pesticide applications and having to pay for a much more costly removal, thus lowering your property value by the value of the tree as well. Russell says it is extremely important to hire qualified people to do

your tree work. Hire only companies who perform the work according to ANSI 3000 standards, and will provide references and proof of insurance. Some tree service companies offer “Topping”- Drastically cutting back its major limbs to reduce its size, or “Lion’s Tailing”-An extreme stripping out of most of the interior branches of a tree. Some will use climbing spikes to prune a tree. These practices can injure or even kill your tree. Be sure you know what you are getting into before hiring; buyer beware. St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Calumet City will be holding their 40th annual SummerFest during the weekend of June 29th and 30th on the church grounds. The fest is open to the general public; however, the planning committee is also seeking to gather former St. Andrew School Alumni from 1983, 1988, and 1993. These classes will be celebrating their 30th, 25th, and 20th class reunions. Former teachers have been invited, and all alumni are encouraged to attend to renew old friendships. Saturday’s event runs from 6 until 10pm. A wide variety of food and drink will be available for purchase throughout the evening. Entertainment includes live music from the 80’s and 90’s starting at 7pm. The 3rd Annual Bean Bag Tournament has already started to form with a $20 per team entry fee. Mrs. Gasior was born February 14, 1925 and died May 5, 2013. She was the wife of the late Chester P. Gasior. Mother of Debbie (Mike) Zeleznik, Cindy (Rick) Boersma, and Michael Gasior. Grandmother of three. Sister of Rita (late Tony) Dorabialski, Virginia Barney, and Leonard (Rosemary) Szalbierz. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements were by Smits Funeral Home (James E. Janusz Funeral Service).
