Talking to Children & Teens When They Need Help May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. The Indiana Psychologica l Association and t he A merican Psychological Association offer tips to help parents and caregivers recognize t he signs of menta l illness and emotional distress in their children. Approximately one in five children ages 13-18 have or will have a serious mental illness, according to the National Institutes of Mental Health. When kids experience difficulties, it’s important that they feel comfortable going to their parents or other trusted adults for help. Some children and teens may keep their feelings inside. If something is troubling them, they may not speak up and ask for help. Sometimes, kids don’t realize that help is available. As the first line of support, parents must be able to have open conversations about feelings so they can identify when their children are struggling emotionally. “As a parent of two young children, we’ve tried to establish open lines of communication from Day 1 by providing a comfortable env ironment for our children to discuss and learn about their feelings and by trying to set a good example ourselves,” says Dr. Natalie Dattilo, a clinical health psychologist in Indianapolis. Getting kids to open up and talk can be a challenge, but the following tips can help start a conversation. Talk about feelings from an early age. Parents and caregivers should use language that is appropriate for the Home Repair & Improvements. age and development of their child. Help them learn to name their emotions. Let children know that people can experience all kinds of emotions and it is ok- it’s what they do with the emotions that matters. Make them feel safe. Put k ids at ease so t hey feel comfortable opening up. It is essential to make it clear why the conversation is happening, as kids can be fearful that they may be in trouble or are being punished if they are pulled aside to talk. Parents and caregivers might consider creating a time to talk one-on-one on a regular basis, such as a weekly lunch or after school snack. Listen to them. Take the time to actively listen to what children and teens have to say. Many times, a ll k ids want is someone who will listen. Try to understand their perspective before offering suggestions. It’s not necessary to try to fix everything. In many cases the best help is to listen attentively. Be Genuine. Try to avoid speaking from a script. Kids can tell when you’re not being genuine. Be open, authentic and relaxed to help them do the same. Affirm and support their need for help. It’s ok for children to express sadness or anger. Normalize those feelings by telling them you’re proud of them for sharing their feelings. Let them know how courageous it was for them to trust an adult for help. If it seems like they need more help than you

can provide, consult with an appropriate professional. It might be best to start by talking to the school psychologist. Don’t be afraid to say I don’t know. As a caregiver, it is ok to admit that you don’t have all the answers. However, if a child asks a question, make every effort to find an answer or someone who can help. Dr. Dattilo agrees. “The most important thing to do when your child opens up to you is to validate what they are feeling, no matter what. You don’t have to agree or understand why to express support. By saying something empathic and heartfelt like, “Wow. That must have been really rough” or even something as simple as: “I hear you” can send a powerful message of non-judgment, which only increases the likelihood that they will open up to you again in the future. Teaching our children about their feelings by giving them the opportunity to talk about them often will help give them the skills they need to cope with difficult emotions for the rest of their lives.” To learn more about mind/body health, visit the American Psychological Association at www.apa.org/helpcenter and follow @APAHelpCenter. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Q u e s t i on : I ’m i n t h e p r o c e s s o f purchasing a home offered for sale by owner. What questions should I ask the seller that will provide me with pertinent information about the property? Also, what questions should I ask that will give me information that most sellers don’t want buyers to know? Answer: This isn’t going to work. There are a universe of potential questions and the odds are overwhelming that you will miss one or more -- and maybe pay thousands of dollars in excess costs as a result. For instance, is the sale subject to a home inspection? Must the inspection be “satisfactory” to you? If the inspection is not satisfactory to you will you get your deposit back if the owner does not make repairs? Must the repairs be satisfactory to you? Can the seller limit repair obligations to a given dollar amount? Are you getting good, marketable and insurable title? How do you know? Please, get a Realtor before you sign anything. Question: I bought a house in October. We were told the heat was electric and on the listing it says the heat is electric. After we closed and started moving in we discovered the heat is really gas. I do not like gas and am afraid of it. What are my
options, if any, in getting this resolved? Can I request they convert the gas to electric? Answer: Gas is both safe and efficient -many people prefer it to electric heat. T he rea l problem here is not t he source of heat; rather it’s your personal preference, an error in the listing form and a failure to see the problem long before closing. This could have been avoide d w it h a profe s sion a l home inspection, a check of the furnace or a look at the utility bills. It may be that the listing broker did little more than check the wrong box on a form -- a matter that a buyer could easily detect and correct with minimal due diligence. You or your attorney can certainly speak with the sellers and their broker -- but I doubt that you’ll get a new heating and cooking system from the past owners. Hammer Toes
Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Giving back to the community is a passion for Edward Stone. Stone is a husband and father, full time employee and a volunteer at the Highland Education Foundation. Stone works full time at Fannie Mae managing equity investments. Both of his daughters are currently students within the School Town of Highland district. When he first heard about the Highland Education Foundation, he thought it would be a great idea to join because he wanted to give back to the community. “I always try to live a balanced life. I want to pursue my career, but also be there for my kids and family. I enjoy giving back to the community,” Stone stated. Stone dedicates his free time to being the treasurer of the Highland Education Foundation. He was appointed the position in October of 2016. The Highland Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to funding innovative educational grants to teachers in the School Town of Highland in order to provide opportunities that enhance student learning and achievement. The foundation is working to get the community and parents to understand their identity, goals and accomplishments. Stone believes this is one of the hardest parts they have faced so far. “I think the foundation will have a long-lasting impact and I will be happy to be a part of it,” Stone explained.

On April 19, 2017, I spoke at t he lu nch me et i ng of t he Rota r y Club i n Me r r i l l v i l le, I nd i a n a . Hans Enderlin asked me to speak at the meeting. I brought the chart that I usually use when I speak about Medicare problems and what I do to fix them. I ex pla i ned t hat t he Medicare system breaks down hundreds of times every day. That is the most common problem w it h t he Me d ic a re s y stem . It is t he problem t hat government bureaucrats and government contractors don’t what to discuss. But , e ver y t i me t he s y s t e m br e a k s dow n , cr it ica l i n for mat ion is lost. The most common result is that insurance compa n ies do not get claims information from Medicare. You can’t blame an insurance company for not paying a claim that it never got from Medicare. W hen that happens, a senior citizen gets a bill from a hospital, doctor, or laboratory. If the senior citizen has no one to help to challenge the bill and correct the problem, the senior citizen is badgered a nd t hreatened w it h a collection action until the bill is paid. If the senior citizen is a client of this insurance agenc y a nd br ings t he unpaid bill to me, I go to work to protect our client from financial harm due to mistakes or fraud in the Medicare system. But, I explain to our clients that I am very good at fixing mista kes and exposing fraud, but I can’t change a government policy. So, if the government changed a policy and that caused t he bi l l, rea l i ze t hat I won’t be able to help. I don’t promise the sky – just my best efforts.
A f ter my ta l k to t he group, I took questions. An attorney at the lunch meeting asked me what our agency charges for this service. I paused and sa id, “Not h i ng.” THEY WERE SURPRISED! Then, I explained that this is a “va lue added” service which our agency – Senior Care Insurance Services – offers to clients. It m a k e s ou r a g e n c y stand out in the minds of senior citizens. We know that the Medicare system breaks down often. When that happens to one of our clients who contacts me for help, I go to work to find the pieces of the puzzle and put them back together to protect our client from financial harm from mistakes or fraud in the Medicare system. This hig h level of customer s er v ic e to ou r s en ior citizen clients helps our agency gain more clients because of referrals. We c a r e a b o u t o u r clients. Our action proves t hat we do. That helps our agency to keep clients happy a nd g row w it h referrals from our happy clients. Does you r insu ra nce agent or agency give this high level of ser v ice to senior citizen clients? If not, why not? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill ca se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He h a s s a v e d s e n i o r citizens over one million dol la rs by f ig ht ing m ista kes a nd f raud i n the Medicare system. GOD WITH US
Trees: They too have a Story to Tell ANNA M. CAISON Trees, as far back into my childhood as I can remember, have always been a place of peace, tranquility, and beauty. My favorite spot at family picnics was to lie under its outstretched branches, looking upward at the sun and sky through its leaves. I’d marvel at the miracle of God’s creative work displayed in nature. As an adult, my favorite outdoor spot continues to be underneath the serene beauty of trees, where I’m always drawn into deep conversations with the Lord. Trees play a ver y prom i nent role throughout the Biblical narrative. For instance, they provided the opportunity of choice in the Garden of Eden; the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Unfortunately, Adam and Eve chose the latter. The psalmist in Psalm 1 used the tree to describe the person who delights in God’s law and on it meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by the rivers of water, bringing forth fruit in season with lush green leaves that will never wither, prospering in everything he/she does. It was under a Pa lm t ree t hat t he Prophetess Deborah sat and counseled Israel as a Judge before the days of the kings. It was a group of trees (Olives, Figs, and Vines) and a bramble Jotham used

to i l lust rate a nd foretel l t he fate of Abimelech who murdered their brothers (sons of Gideon) to make himself king over the people. Then, there’s the Fig tree that failed to produce figs at its appointed time, withered away under Jesus’ curse. And let’s not forget the Tree of Life, on either side of the crystal river of life f lowing from God’s throne, whose leaves are for the healing of the nations in the New Jerusalem. The trees that come to mind, as we watch the unveiling of corruption and possible col lusion su r rou nd i ng t he current administration, is mentioned in Habakkuk’s Hymn of Faith following God’s pronouncement of judgment on corrupt Israel. “Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vine; Though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; . . .. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, and He will make me walk on my high hill.” (Hab. 3:17-19) For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . The Purdue University Northwest CHESS A r t Ga l ler y, located on 6725 Ken nedy Avenue, will feature a piece of the Region’s history during the month of May with its show Steeltown USA. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The ex h ibit d isplays photog raphs of Nor t hwest India na steelworkers ta ken over a ten-year period, from 1975 to 1985. The featured artist, Tom Hocker, captured images of workers and the landscapes of the mills during his time as an on-staff photographer for Inland Steel Company. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, Hocker’s photographs were used to attract publicity for Inland Steel, usually coupled with press releases or accompanied by newspaper articles. Now, up to 42 years later, the dynamic black and white portraits stand as a testament to t he men a nd women who built one of the Region’s largest and most lucrative industries. “I had the opportunity to be around scenes that were visually spectacular, even while hazardous,” said Hocker, who would wear safety gear from head to toe while on a shoot at the mills. “Men a nd women were a r mored i n protective gear to withstand the dangers present in the shaping of metal. These days the process is much more controlled remotely, but in the previous generation, personnel worked up close to the heat, smoke and grit. Threat of harm has always been present.” Hocker’s personal favorite photograph in the show is of a steelworker cleaning an ingot pole. “Everything came together for this photo. You can’t see the man’s face, which almost makes him generic. This is symbolic of work in steel mills,” said Hocker. “He is dwarfed by the size of the machinery. When you work

You also need to eva luate whet her your por t fol io ha s got ten out of ba la nce, wh ich can occur without your doing anything at all. To illustrate: If you start out with a certain percentage of one type of investment, such as stocks, and these stocks grow to a point where they now take up a bigger sha re of your por t fol io, you may be taking on more risk than you had intended. You should review your por t folio at least once a year to evaluate both its performance and its ba la nc e. Onc e you’ve compared where you are today with where you were a year ago, you’ll be in a better position to make appropriate cha nges if needed. Do what it takes to keep yourself physically fit – but also take steps to ensure your investment portfolio is in good shape. It’s vitally important to your future – and you can do the work without even breaking a sweat. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

discovered defects usually far exceeds the cost of an inspect ion. Even when nothing major is found t he i nspect ion cost is worth the “peace of mind” and maintenance advice. NO T H AV I NG L E G A L ADVICE. Buyers need to understand that nearly ever yone involved in a real estate transaction, the seller, the buyer’s real estate agent, the seller’s agent and the mortgage ba n ker/broker – ha s a vested interest in getting t he dea l done because they only get paid when the house closes. So they may push a deal even if it’s not in the best interest of the buyer. One of the best defenses against making a n ex pensive purchase you’ll regret is to hire a real estate attorney. These p r of e s s i on a l s u s u a l l y charge a flat fee and their advice is objective. Again it comes dow n to good ad v ic e a nd y ou r ow n “peace of mind”.
