STEM Day at South Suburban College On May 5, approx i mately 250 middle-school through high school st udent s v isited Sout h Subu rba n Col lege for a STEM (Science, Te c h n o l o g y, E n g i n e e r i n g a n d Mathematics) Day that included a live link with astronauts. Students enjoyed remarks from U.S. Congresswoman Robin Kelly of t he Second Congressional District, who assisted in setting up the NASA link, as well as from U.S. Senator Dick Durbin who also attended the event. Righteous Judgment ANNA M. CAISON Recent headlines regarding LGBT people brought to mind a conversation between Jesus and the religious leaders. The religious leaders had accused Jesus of breaking the Sabbath law because He often healed people on the Sabbath (a day of rest from all forms of labor). Jesus responded to their accusations by asking them why is it okay for them to break the Sabbath law to circumcise an infant on the 8th day when that day fell on the Sabbath. Stop judging by appearance, He told them, but judge with righteous judgment. C i r c u mc i s ion w a s a s y m b ol of covenant inclusion that included God’s favor and blessing over the infant. Jesus’ hea ling of indiv idua ls demonstrated God’s favor (grace) and blessing over His covenant people. So why is one okay and the other isn’t? Many leading t he f ight in discrimination against LGBT people do so because LGBT’s lifestyle is immoral. It is, but so is adultery and fornication (sexual relations between unmarried people; promiscuity). In keeping with the principle Jesus applied to circumcision vs healing, in that we judge with righteous judgment--------we can’t discriminate against LGBT people if we don’t do the same to people who commit adultery and

fornication. All 3 acts are immoral and are an abomination to God! I suspect there are more adulterers and fornicators in America than there is LGBT people. Adulterers and fornicators hold office in ever y bra nch of our government, they teach our children in both public, private and Christian schools, they work side by side with us on our jobs, we dine with them, and we exchange goods and services with them. So why is adultery and fornication okay and LGBT isn’t? I n c a se you’re wonder i ng , no, I don’t condone LGBT lifestyle, nor do I condone people who engage in adultery and fornication. However, I do believe in every human being’s right to choose whom He will serve and the lifestyle he chooses to emulate because the right to choose comes from God. After an hour or so, John found the lake trout hugging the bottom of the lake – and the fun bega n. W hen t he la ke trout took the lure, the rods bent and line started burning off the reel. That sound will definitely get your attention! The action was fast and furious. A couple times there were two guys fighting to get the lakers into the boat at the same time. These fish weighed from 8-14 pounds and were in fine fighting for m due to t he c old water of the lake. How Come I Can’t Have The Bread? “How come I can’t have the bread?” That was the question posed to me by an eight year-old visitor this past Sunday downstairs in the Fellowship Hall after worship. He was referring to the bread of Holy Communion. Good question, right? Why can’t he? Should he? His curious question was scratching at a very touchy issue that the Church has often times dealt with internally. Who is allowed to take communion? Maybe some of you grew up hearing phrases from ministers like, “All baptized believers are welcome at this Table.” Or maybe you heard this: “All those who are baptized into a Christian church are welcome.” Or maybe even more of a narrow invitation, you heard this: “All those baptized believers of this congregation are welcome.” What’s interesting is that the actual liturg y of our denomination reads, “A ll baptized Christians present who are admitted to the Lord’s Supper are to be invited to participate.” Now, that’s rather gray, don’t you think? A ll baptized Christians? So, does that mean the most infant of babies can participate in communion because he or she has been baptized? I have a friend who recently told me he left his home Church because they would not allow his kids to take communion. I also

have a friend who recently told me that kids shouldn’t be allowed to take communion and I should talk to the family about this. So, who is right and who is wrong? Since we believe that Holy Communion is a spiritually forming time when we meet the Risen Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit, we of course would want as many individuals as possible to have that experience. However, we also want to make sure that individuals know what they are doing and why they are doing it. Again this is not just a quick way to get a snack in church. In some ways, you could make a great argument that for children the seed of curiosity only grows when they are allowed to celebrate Communion. Those questions lead to faithful conversations. Their curiosity leads them into entering the mystery of the faith. And for parents those opportunities provide a rich time to grow closer as a family within the context of the body of Christ. If we believe that the Table is a table of grace, then one thing is for certain and that is that there is no room for judgment or condemnation. No room to judge who or who doesn’t participate in the Sacrament. No room to speculate why a person does or does not choose to pa r t icipate. There’s on ly room for remembrance, communion and hope.

Once the client gave permission to Medicare f or me t o s p e a k a nd question on her behalf, I started questioning why ou r cl ient wa s hav i ng problems with a medical bill. I had the Medicare representat ive read to me specific portions of Medicare rev iew of the cla i m. I lea r ned t hat t he med ic a l f i r m w a s w rong f u l ly bi l l i ng ou r cl ient for $ 511 t hat it already knew Medicare r u led she d id not owe to t he medica l ser v ice provider – in this case a clinic. Here with some edits to protect the privacy of our client is part of the letter that I sent to the medical service provider that sent the false bill. ### In our phone call to Medicare today, I asked t he Me d ic a r e C l a i m s Representat ive to read to me the footnotes that Medica re put w it h t he claims for charges of $58 and $453. She reported to me that the footnotes

stated t hat t he patient owes nothing for these services because payment for t hese ser v ices was included in another claim ON THE SAME DAY. S o, a s of now, OU R CL I E N T OW ES NOTHING. If you filed t he cla i m i ncor rec t ly, which is what I suspect you did, then refile the claim CORRECTLY. But, do not send a bill to our client for $511 when you a lready k now t hat she does not owe it because the Medicare EOB that you received told you that she does not owe it. ### All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency distinguishes itself by “going the extra mile” for our clients. Does your i nsu ra nce agenc y g ive this high level of service to its senior citizen clients? If not, why not? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care I n su ra nce Ser v ices i n Merrillville, Indiana. Of course, you can find a broad array of financial topics to discuss. But if you want to concentrate on just a few, you might consider these for starters: • Investing for the future – When young people are paying off student loans, they may not think they can also afford to invest for the future. Indeed, this can be challenging – but it’s not impossible. So, if your children go to work for an employer that offers a retirement plan, such as a 401(k), you may want to point out that they can have money automatically invested – and since they never rea lly “had” this money in the first place, t hey a re less l i kely to miss it. They can start by deferring small amounts; when their earnings rise, they can increase their contributions. • Buy i ng a home a nd paying off a mortgage – With interest rates still low, now is not a bad time for prospective firstt i me home bu y er s . O f course, if your children truly are starting out in the working world, it will likely ta ke t hem a few years to save up enough for a down payment. LANSING GOOD NEIGHBOR PARADE OFFERED DAZZLING DISPLAYS ON A DAZZLING SPRING DAY: The annual parade which has been going on for decades, sometimes in warm sunny weather and sometimes in snow and drizzle, lucked out in 2016 May 7, with dazzling sunshine and a cool brisk wind. Residents lined Ridge Road north from Wentworth as the parade moved past the stores and houses, waving and shouting ‘hello!’ Members of service groups like the Copper Muggers passed out candy to the kids scrambling from the curb to catch it and camera phones were put to good use. The parade was led by the Lansing Memorial Ceremonial Honor Guard.
