Our certified instructors will help participants improve their balance, strength and flexibility within the safe and healing environment of the water. South Suburban College (SSC) Baseball Team defeated Triton College by the score of 9-5 on recently to win the Nationa l Junior College Athletic Association (NJCA A) Division I Region-4 Championship. Winning pitcher Ryan Waaso, out of Marian Catholic High School, went 7 innings to get the win and improve to 7-4 on the year. Stephen Letz, of Lake Central, had 2 hits including 3 RBI’s. Jake Hickey, of Lincolnway East, struck the big blow with a bases clearing double in the 5th inning as the Bulldogs put up a 7-spot. This is the 11th time the Bulldogs have won the Regional Tournament, including four in a row. Also for the second consecutive year, Letz was named Most Valuable Player of the Regional Tournament and Coach Ruzich was named Region-4 Coach of the Year. The Bulldogs advanced to the District Tournament at Iowa Western on Friday, May 16th. South Suburban played Marshalltown Iowa. The 2014 Bulldogs are now 36-19 on the season. Coach Ruzich recently garnered his 1,000th career win and was selected for induction into the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame on May 23rd. The property was advertised on the Internet and a prospect from overseas contacted my son -- not the broker -- with an offer to purchase. The buyer claimed to be a U.S. citizen and in both the real estate and securities businesses. Should my son cancel the listing and sell to this overseas buyer? Answer: What buyer? Does anyone know if the buyer is qualified to make the purchase? Does the buyer exist? To cancel a listing because the broker’s ad ver t i s ement broug ht a re spon s e penalizes the broker for achieving exactly what he or she was asked to do, find a buyer. That’s unfair and not grounds to cancel a listing. Your son should instead have the buyer contact the broker. If the buyer wants the property then working through the broker should not be a problem. The broker will be able to provide a proper contract form, hold deposit money in an escrow account, arrange required inspections, etc.

The Lansing Historical Society The Lansing Historical Society’s f loat in the Lansing Good Neighbor Day Parade, held on May 3, 2014, reflected the theme of “Renaissance Lansing” by focusing on the rebirth of Lansing’s volunteer spirit. Sixty years ago in 1954, Lansing celebrated a Centennial. It was a village of almost 12,228 people. It was said that about 12,000 of those people participated in some way. Men grew beards and women wore long skirts and bonnets. Fifty girls competed to become the Queen. They bought felt hats and stock certificates. They put on a historical pageant for eight nights. When it was all over, they made almost $12,000 to buy Lansing a new fire truck! Today Lansing is seeing a Renaissance of enthusiasm and civic participation in the Autumn Fest and other events. The Historical Society urges Lansing citizens to be a part of the Renaissance and get involved with the following organizations: Lansing Association for Community Events

Shopping for the best interest rate possible has always been the consumer’s pr i ma r y obje c t ive w hen bor row i ng money. As well it should be! The challenge with this strategy is that there is much misleading information released on the subject by various media. Web sites and email marketing, along with other media such as radio, television and billboard advertising, have brought the importance of i nterest rates to t he foref ront of consumers’ minds. The problem for the consumer with this type of marketing is that it is designed to make the lender’s phone ring. Often, the advertiser offers a ridiculously low interest rate, with the intent of using a “baitand-switch” technique once the client is reeled in. This is often done through short pricing. Short pricing is a term that is used when a lender offers an extremely attractive interest rate, but that rate is only available for a very brief period of time. The average consumer enters into a purchase contract to buy a home for at least 30 days. WOODROW WILCOX An elderly woman from Hobart, Indiana brought severa l let ters f rom Medicare to my office for me to review with her. We met on May 13, 2014. “All these papers from Medicare are confusing to me. I don’t understand w hat t he y mea n,” she complained in my office. “So, I brought them to you because you’re the expert.” T he s e v er a l le t t er s combined totaled over 40 pages. I understood why the client was confused. A ll of it was w ritten in the language of federa l bureaucrats. But, I’m used to it and I quickly realized t hat ou r cl ient had no problem. Her doctor had a problem. Medica re ref used to pay for a bone densit y me a s u r ement u si n g a dedicated x-ray machine. Me d i c a r e d e t e r m i n e d t hat “T he i n for mat ion provided does not support the need for this many services or items within this period of time,” and, “The follow ing policies L31620 were used when we made this decision.” Med ica re pol icies r at ione d how of t en a senior citizen can get the procedure or service that our client got. Medicare covers a Bone Ma ss Mea su rement ( BM M ) for a senior on Medicare only once every two years. Under Medicare’s rules, only a few special medical circumstances justify the testing in less than two years. If none of those gov er n ment a ppr ov e d circumsta nces ex ist, Medicare will not cover the test in less than 23 months from the previous test. The doctor appealed

I copied some of the documents a nd h ig h l ig hted t he key sections so that she could explain things to her husband. She did not want him to worry about more medical bills either. South Suburban College Students Receive Academic Awards South Suburban College (SSC) presented their 2014 Academic Achievement Awards in a ceremony last week at the college’s Performing Arts Center. The annual event for students features the spring Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) national honors society induction ceremony, SSC Foundation (SSCF) scholarship awards, and departmental scholarships. The mission of PTK is to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students; and prov ide opportunities for indiv idua l grow th and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming. On the national level, PTK students are widely recognized as academic achievers and have access to hundreds of scholarships, only open to PTK members, upon transfer or pursuit of their advanced degrees. This spring, 51 SSC students were inducted into PTK, meeting college president Don Manning’s goal to expand the program on campus. PTK members at SSC receive benefits and privileges in addition to the national recognition. The SSCF is on pace to award more than 150 scholarships totaling over $100,000 for the sixth consecutive year, and has now awarded $1.6 million is scholarships since 1989. With the cost of higher education on the rise and the level of state funding on the decline, students are finding it more and more difficult to afford a full-time college education. The Foundation’s continued growth and support is often critical for students to begin or continue their college education. The SSCF continues to award high school graduates with $750 scholarship awards throughout the summer until funds are exhausted. The college also sponsors unlimited Board of Trustees Scholarships, which are full tuition waivers up to 12 credit hours per semester for high school graduates who have a 3.5 (on 4.0 scale), or graduate in the top 15% of their class. But you also might want to look even farther into the future — to the day when your kids say “goodbye” to their local schools and “hello” to t heir college dormitories. God Is With Us ANNA M. CAISON Sometimes the only way we know God is with us is when we find ourselves walking in the shoes of those who’ve gone before us. When my daughter announced she and the kids were moving to New York to be with her estranged husband, I was devastated. The harder I tried to dissuade her, the more determine she was to go. So with tears in my eyes, I kissed my grandchildren good-bye, and made my daughter promise me that if things didn’t turn out right, she’d call me, and her uncle and I would come and get them. That following summer I vacationed with my daughter and grandchildren. While there, I got up early one morning and went outdoors to pray. As I sat in the backyard surrounded by towering trees, the melodious sounds of blue jays and cardinals, and a lone squirrel jumping from one tree to another; I was reminded of a time long ago when my children were young. I had packed up and moved to Louisiana to be with my husband. My mother had tried to dissuade me, but I too had been determined to go. My brother had made me promise that if things didn’t go right, call him, and he’d come and get us.

Just as God was w ith me and my children, I began to see Him with my daughter and her children. Two days after arriving in New York, she found a place to live. The schools my grandchildren attend far exceed the educational opportunities t hey had i n Ch icago. A nd t hey a re being exposed to different cultures and people living together in community. My daughter is learning to trust God for herself, and to lean on Him in crisis instead of leaning on me. The Bible spea ks of a son, Isaac, who walked in his father’s (Abraham) footsteps and discovered that the same God who was with his father, is now with him. He had traveled to the same place, propagated the same lie, experienced God’s forgiveness, friendship, div ine protect ion, g u ida nce, a nd mater ia l blessings (Genesis 20:1-17; 26:1-11). Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES I was on a B-17 bomber pla ne about f ive yea rs ago. Not sure if it was my ner ves, but I t hought I might need an air sick bag. And all I was doing was taking a tour of the plane, not actually flying in it. At that moment, I realized that I had no guts, and certainly not one brave bone i n my body t hat would allow me to fly up to the sky in one of these. A ll t he more reason that I admire the brave ones, who risk their lives in bomber planes during war. It was a plane similar to t he B-17, t hat f light officer Albert DiCicco and his crew f lew during the Mediterranean Theater of Operations in WWII. Their plane was a B-24 Liberator. Said to be more difficult to fly than a B-17 w it h its heav y cont rol forces. Yet, the B-24 could a c h ie v e a h i g he r t op speed. However, neither of t he s e pl a ne s w e r e heated or pressu r i zed. I don’t know how it was even possible to manage a plane at 25,000 feet with hor r i f ic t emp er at u r e s bet ween -30 to -50 degrees. Even w ith an electrically heated flying suit, I think I would crack into frozen pieces. On t he mor n i ng of Wednesday, Januar y 31, 1945, Albert DiCicco was w oken up by a not her f lig ht of f icer, a nd told

to get ready for his first m ission. He had just arrived at the Castelluccio Airfield Base in Italy ten days earlier with the crew he trained with, part of t he 8t h squadron. But a not her squad ron wa s about to leave on their 25th and last mission, and they needed a bombardier to fill in. A lber t DiCicco, t he lead bombardier for his squadron, was chosen for the task. He met his new crew, of the 724th Bomb Squadron, for the briefing of t heir mission. Their target was the railroad marshalling yards near Moosbierbaum Oil Refinery in Austria. Albert DiCicco, along w it h t he e x p er ienc e d pilot, 1st Lt. Lloyd Boots, and the rest of his crew, joined the formation with the other planes high in the sky. W hat happens ne x t i s more c h i l l i ng than the -30 degrees they endured. Since the market has fallen, I have read a lot of articles about people suggest i ng t hat buy i ng a house is no longer an achievement in America. Several articles have stated that home ownership is no longer a piece of American wea lt h bu i ld i ng. Ma ny a r t icles even suggested that it made more sense to hold your money and rent than invest in a home. I thought I would point out 3 of the main reasons that those arguments don’t make any sense. #1 If buy ing a home doesn’t make any sense now, then why is all of wall st reet i nvest i ng money into single family homes… Do a sea rch on t he internet. Large investment f i r ms a re buy i ng up thousands of single family properties. They are fixing t he proper t ies up a nd then renting them out to fa m i lies who lost t heir home. Why would they do this if real estate had all of a sudden become a bad investment? The answer i s si mple. T hese la r ge investors understand that the market is down now and it is a perfect time to buy so that when the market climbs they can sell at a nice profit. # 2 A l l i nv e s t m e nt s experience ups and downs, the rule is buy low, sell high, why would you stop investing when prices are low… Pe ople p a n ic w hen prices fall. They think that the prices may go too low and they w ill lose their money. Real estate should not have t hat problem. MIKE BUDER Buying and selling real estate is often stressful. It does not have to be that way. Buyers and sellers want the same thing – “A good dea l”. Oh, maybe t hat is t he problem. Unrealistic expectations of w hat a proper t y i s worth and petty holdouts can scuttle many deals. Whether a seller or buyer be, do your research and get professional adv ice. Sellers need to understand a nd accept what t hei r house is worth today. It may have no relation to what it could have sold for in 2005, how much t h e y o w e , h o w mu c h t hey paid for it or how much work they put into it over the last 10 years. A home is only worth what someone i s w i l l i ng to pay for it. All the analysis means nothing if nobody w ill buy it. Pa rt of t he difficulty in setting a price is due to the lack of similar “sold” homes to use as comparables. Short sales, ba n k ow ned a nd f i xer uppers a re ra mpa nt in many neighborhoods and can negatively affect price comparisons. Buyers, too, need to be educated. A buyer, just as a seller, needs to have rea l i st ic ex pec t at ion s. If you low ball, the offer may insult a realistically

pr iced sel ler a nd you r offer will be ignored and you will be just wasting time. Time that you may be able to better spend on f i nd i ng a proper t y that truly fits your needs and wa llet. Buyers should develop criteria, including price, location a nd fe at u re s t h at a re realistic. Once you know what your perimeters are, start searching. A good realtor can help you put a plan together and set it in motion. Saving you time and grief along the way. To answer the question – YES, real estate can be fun.
