The Indiana Heart Gallery, a traveling exhibit featuring compelling portraits of children in need of adoptive families, is stopping in Crown Point. The Gallery will be featured at White’s Residential and Family Services through May 27. The Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) uses the Heart Gallery’s remarkable professional portraits and stories about foster children in Indiana to help put a face on a sometimes invisible need and remind families that adoption can change lives. There is no charge to see the Gallery. “On average we are actively recruiting adoptive homes for 100 – 120 youth statewide,” said Sandra Caesar, DCS’ adoption program manager. “Every child needs a family they can call their own. We need families that are not only willing to love our children, but are also prepared to commit to them, claim them as their own and hang in there through their ups and downs.” Nationally, nearly 400,000 children are in foster care in the United States. More than 100,000 are legally available for adoption and in need of adoptive families. Many of these children are older, in sibling groups that want to be adopted together or have special medical needs. For some foster kids, getting adopted can mean the difference between

Hammer Toes

Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

A f ter fou r week s of show ing the house, we accepted t he bid t hat Kevin Karagias offered. It was exactly what I told my brot her I bel ieved was the fair market value of our mot her’s home. mind when we were conceived, and that purpose must be sought and breathed. It’s amazing how so many people believe in God and go to church weekly, but have not seen changes in their circumstances. Based upon how things are going for many people, miracles are needed. No longer is a “feel good” sermon going to get it. T hey a re not decrea si ng t he divorce rates, turning father’s hearts to their children, creating jobs, eliminating debt, etc. In our world today, people are getting deeper and deeper in a rut. We must do something different in order to get different results. If you are reading this article, please know that you are a leader placed on this earth as an agent of change. True leadership, based upon one’s purpose, leads them to prosperity. No one should be struggling. I a m rem i nded of a leader, Apost le Pau l, who God had on a Da mascus road experience. He was dramatically converted to begin his journey of true leadership. Pr ior to his na me being changed from Saul to Paul, he murdered the disciples and persecuted Christ (Acts 9:1). Saul utilized his leadership abilities based upon his own views, which led him to victimizing others based upon what they believed. How much of that do we see in our world today? True leadership is a life of servitude that provides opportunities for other human beings to excel in life, as they utilize t heir gifts and ta lents w it h a purpose, and for a purpose. Therefore, it is necessary that we develop our leadership skills and abilities via learning how to apply spiritual principles to every aspect of life. Our Creator had a purpose in

Engineering - Bringing Students & Manufacturers Together T he S out hw ork s E ng i ne er i ng a nd Robotics Showcase held last month at Prairie State College was an extraordinary success. It featured teams of students from area high schools demonstrating their mechanical creations. While manufacturing is alive and well in the south suburbs, more needs to be done to convince high school students to take a fresh look at job opportunities in the field. Along with the college, the event, called “Mayors for Ma nufacturing,” was a lso sponsored by organizations including the Technology and Manufacturing Association, Sout h Subu rba n Mayor s & Ma nager s A s s o c i at ion a nd C h ic a go S out h l a nd Economic Development Corp. The mayors association is also a partner in the Calumet Green Manufacturing Partnership, which works to match people, particularly the unemployed, with available manufacturing jobs. Training partners in the effort include Prairie State, South Suburban College and For sale: 600 + mostly fiction books HC and SC. Very good condition. $100 firm. Moraine Valley Community College, and the partnership also works with several local high schools. Manufacturers see robotics as a possible entry point in getting high school students to t hink of ma nufacturing as a ca reer option. Manufacturing, particularly in the Chicago region, is enjoying a “second rena issa nce.” W h i le t he U.S. ha s lost significant manufacturing jobs to lower-cost countries such as Mexico and China, U.S. firms are focused on producing higher-value products, which in turn are enabling them to offer better wages than they were 20-plus years ago. But in the nottoo-distant future, your children w ill be facing a big ger t ra nsit ion a s they head off to college. Will you be financially prepared for that day? A college educat ion is a good investment – college graduates earn, on average, $1 million more over their lifetimes than high school graduates, but a bachelor’s degree doesn’t come cheap. For the ‘15–’16 school year, t he average ex pense – tuition, fees, room and board – was $19,548 at a public four-year school and $43,921 at a four-year private school, according to the College Board. And by the time your children are ready for college, these costs may be considerably higher, because inflation is alive and well in the higher education arena. Your children may be eligible for some t y pes of f i n a n c i a l a i d a n d scholarships. But even so, you’ll want to consider college-savings vehicles – and one of t he most popular is a 529 plan. A 529 plan offers a variety of benefits, including the following: • Hig h cont r ibut ion limits – A 529 plan won’t limit your contributions based on your income. In all likelihood, you can contribute as much as you want to a 529 plan, as ma ny states have cont r ibut ion l i m it s of $300,000 and up. And you can give up to $14,000 ($28,000 for a married couple filing jointly) per year, per child, without incurring any gift taxes. • Ta x a d v a n t a g e s – earnings accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher educat ion ex penses. (529 plan distributions not used for qua lif ied expenses may be subject

to federa l a nd state income tax, and a 10% IRS penalty on the earnings.) Furt hermore, your 529 plan contributions may be eligible for a state tax deduction or credit if you participate in your own state’s plan (check with your tax advisor regarding deductibility). • Freedom to invest in any state’s plan. – You can invest in a 529 plan from any state – but that doesn’t mean your child has to go to school there. You could live in one state, invest in a second state’s plan, and send your student to school in a third state, if you choose. • Money can be used for virtually any program – Upon g raduat i ng h ig h school, not all kids are interested in, or prepared for, a traditional four-year college. But you can use your 529 plan to help pay for qualified expenses at a variety of educational i nst it ut ions, i nclud i ng t w o -y e a r c o m m u n i t y colleges and trade schools. Of cou rse, a 529 pla n does have considerations you w ill need to think about before opening an accou nt. For exa mple, your 529 plan assets can affect your child’s needsbased financial aid, but it might not doom it. As long as the 529 assets are under your control, they typically w i l l be a ssessed at a maximum rate of 5.64% in determining your family’s ex pected cont r ibut ion under the federal financial aid formula, as opposed to the usual 20% rate for assets held in the student’s name. In any case, though, a 52 9 p l a n i s w o r t h consider i ng. But don’t wait too long – as you well know, your kids seem to grow up in the blink of an eye. Knowing God through Time Management

6 Historical Things We Learned As True

ANNA M. CAISON

ARLO KALLEMEYN Not ever y t h i ng t hat is “com mon k nowledge” is t r ue. Here a re a few commonly held beliefs that are simply not true. 1) Napoleon was short. If you ask anyone what he or she knows about Napoleon, it is a sure bet that his height (or lack thereof) will be mentioned. In fact, he was so upset by being short; he developed a chip on his shoulder that resulted in his conquering most of Europe. W hile t his ma kes for great persona l drama, it isn’t true. Napoleon was actually around 5’ 7” tall, which was taller than the average of 5’ 5” at the time. So where does this myth come from? Well, you can thank the English, the staunchest opponent of Napoleonic France. You see, Napoleon was 5’ 2” in French measurement, which differed from the Imperial measurements that the English used. So when the English heard that Napoleon was 5’2”, they just kind of ran with the propaganda aspect. It also didn’t help that the French had a nickname for their beloved leader as “le petit caporal” or The Little Corporal. 2) Christopher Columbus discovered America C h r i s t op h e r C o l u m b u s i s s o w e l l remembered in America that he still has his own national holiday (Columbus Day on October 12th), along with numerous universit ies a nd cit ies t hat bea r his na me. W hat you m ig ht not k now is that nearly 500 years before Columbus made his way to the “New World,” Norse explorers discovered and set up a colony there. Around 1000 CE, Norse explorers venturing from their bases in Greenland and Iceland discovered a rich new world full of plenty. After a few years, they returned, named t he land “Vinland” (literally Vineland), and settled in for the long haul. Unfortunately (or fortunately), t h e y d i d n’t l a s t l o n g , a n d No r s e settlements were thought to be a myth until the 1960s when evidence of a Norse settlement was discovered. 3) Great Wall of China is visible from the moon The Great Wall of China certainly is a marvel of humanity. It stretches over 5,500 miles including hilly and mountainous terrain. The myth of the Great Wall is that it is visible from the moon. This “fact”

dates back to a “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” (don’t believe it) cartoon in 1932. The cartoon stated that the Great Wall was “the mightiest work of man, the only one that would be visible to the human eye from the moon.” However, the Great Wall is not visible from the moon (how would someone in 1932 know this anyway?) and is barely visible from much closer in outer space. The idea behind this historical myth is really cool, but unfortunately no manmade objects are visible to the naked eye from the moon. There is just lots of cloudy white, blue, greens and yellows. 4) Vikings had horns on their helmets Almost no images are as ingrained as the bloodthirsty Viking raider with his axe and horned helmet terrorizing an English seaside village. This romanticized image of the Viking actually comes from the 19th centur y when composer Richard Wagner used Vikings in horned helmets as central characters in his opera “Der Ring des Nibelungen.” The image became synonymous, and a myth was born. In reality, having horns on your helmet is a terrible idea since it is something for an opponent to use against you in combat. 5) Ferdinand Magellen circumnavigated the world “First man to circumnavigate the world” is a common question for an elementary geog r aphy test, a nd i n school you probably got it wrong. Why? Ferdinand Magellan, the famed Portuguese explorer, was k i l led i n t he Ph i l ippi nes (a f ter stick ing his nose into ot her people’s busi ness) du r i ng t he ex ped it ion to circu m nav igate t he world. The t r ue answer to this question is “Juan Sebastian E lc a no,” t he m a n w ho e v e nt u a l l y succeeded Magellan in command of the expedition. 6) Albert Einstein failed his math class. Albert Einstein failing math was just a false statement in an issue of “Ripley’s Believe It or Not.” The statement was made wh i le Ei nstei n was st i l l a l ive and he even saw the issue in question. Einstein not only did not fail math, but he overwhelmingly excelled in it, mastering classes such as differential and integral calculus. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of history

Do you ever feel like you never have enough time to do all the things that need to be done? Have you ever wished you had more time? What a blessing to know that God is wiser than we are. If He gave us an additional hour or two more a day we’d kill ourselves trying to cram into it more things to do. For se ver a l mont h s I had be en struggling with the issue of not having enough time to do all the things I needed to do. Juggling home, work, and ministry responsibilities, and trying to find time for family and rest left me overwhelmed a nd ex hausted. I t hought to myself, “What you need Anna, is a schedule!” But not h i ng fol lowed t he schedu le except work. Everything else clashed and crashed. Finally I cried out to the Lord, “Help me, Lord. What am I doing wrong that I can’t seem to get everything on my schedule accomplished?” In the early stillness of dawn the Lord spoke. “It’s not how you schedule, Anna, it’s what you schedule.” As I continued

to meditate on those words, I realized it wasn’t that I didn’t have enough time; the problem was a lack of wisdom in the things I tried to schedule into my life. Not everything I committed myself to do were things God assigned me to do. But those of us who are blessed with a servant’s heart know how easy it is to fall into the trap of extending ourselves beyond our capacity. W herever there’s a need we find ourselves rushing to meet it without ever asking ourselves, “Is this something that I need to handle, or is it something I can delegate to someone else?” Once I began to separate the things I knew God had given me to do from the things I took upon myself; I discovered I had more than enough time to do the things I needed to do. I also had time for family, rest, and an increase in quiet time with the Lord. For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Prayer to the Blessed Virgin

(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. MTM

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

Answer: Imagine if you sell your home, provide the cash to fix up his property and then the wedding is called off. You would have no cash, no house and no hubby. It may be best to do nothing until you’re actually husband and wife.

Answer: I’m not sure what agreement you have with the “seller,” but it seems unlikely that you have a valid purchase contract. The problem is this: To sell real estate you first have to own it. Your “seller” does not have exclusive title to the property, she’s merely a co-ow ner. Unless she has specific, written authority from the co-owner to sell under certain terms and conditions she can only market her interest. You’ll need to speak with an attorney to find out if you can obtain any damages. However, i f you wa nt t he proper t y the better approach would be to forget da mages a nd get bot h co-ow ners to accept your terms. In the future, before buying real estate, engage either a real estate broker or an attorney before signing any documents.

Quest ion : I r e c ent l y joi ne d i n a n agreement to purchase a home at a price accepted by the seller. Now the seller has decided she doesn’t want to sell the property, because her live-in boyfriend who owns half of property will receive half of sales price. What recourse do I have if the seller refuses to complete sale of property?

Question: I plan to marry in the near future; my husband-to-be had to buy out his wife’s portion of the house in a hurry -- she has also ruined his credit. I have excellent credit and also a home to sell. I will make around $40,000 profit from my house. Would we be better to use some of my profit to fix up his house and ready it to sell; or should he sell his house “as is” and get him out from under the large payments and interest rate? We plan to buy a home together in my name after we are married.
