They’re savvy s h opp e r s . T h e y k n o w w h a t ’s a v a i l a b l e a n d they’ll know your home is overpriced. By over pr icing you r home, you r l i fe w i l l be on hold wh i le you r l ist i ng m isses it s best oppor t u n it y to at t ract buyers. A f ter week s or m ont h s of m a r k e t i n g

you’ll probably cave in to some price reductions, but by the time your house gets to the proper price it’s going to be stale. A home that’s been on the market for ten or twelve months doesn’t demand a lot of respect from buyers. They will probably submit lowba l l of fers based upon your market time. So my poi nt is t hat you’re better off to take a hard look at the research that your agent provides to you, and go with a fair and reasonable price in the first place. Held July 13 through 16 and Aug. 3 through 7, Critter Camp is a five-day camp that provides a fun, safe, hands-on environment for kids to learn about various aspects of animal care and build a sense of respect and responsibility for animals. Camp takes place each day from 9 a.m. to noon at HSCA, 421 45th St., Munster, Ind. Campers will do a daily craft, enjoy a snack, make a camp t-shirt, and have interactive presentations about animals. Past presenters have included a veterinarian, dog trainer, wildlife sanctuary, a pet therapy team and more. The registration fee is $100 for either the July or August camp. Camp size is limited. Calumet City Honors Students and Teachers If pride could be seen, felt and touched, it would have landed in abundance during the Annual Student Achievement Awards and Teacher of the Year Awards Wednesday May 13, 2015 at American Legion Post 330. Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush, City Clerk Nyota Figgs and City Treasurer Gerry Tarka along with Deputy Clerk Roseann Bonato, Deputy City Treasurer Nicole Rudder, Fire Chief Bill Galgan, Police Chief Edward Gilmore, Health Inspector Debbie Sellers and and Deputy Fire Chief Rich Banske presented the awards to students from School Districts 148, 156. 149, 155, 157, 205, 215, Bishop Noll, Marian Catholic, Seton Academy and Midwest Elite Prep. The awards were given for academics, athletics, citizenship, leadership, fine arts, and concluded w ith “Teacher of Year.” The evening’s awards were concluded by a special award being presented to Mayor Michelle Markiewicz for her ongoing concern support and encouragement of the children/ students/teachers of Calumet City. The evening began with a delicious dinner served to the students, teachers and their guests. June Schmidt provided music at the organ, and Pastor Renaldo Kyles, Kingdom Builders Church, gave the Invocation. The Mayor summed up her remarks at the conclusion of the event asking that the scholars “be kind. District 205 Gives Back to Community with Reading Night

Reading and poetry is fun! That is the message that District 205 has for the children and adults in the communities surrounding Thornwood, Thornridge and Thornton High Schools. This year 'Family Reading Night and Poetry Slam' was held at Thornwood High School. This popular event celebrates both the written and spoken word. The community including area libraries, students, alumni and local businesses donate books so that every child can go home with books to add to their own collection. This year the reading celebration began with families gathering in the newly remodeled Thornwood cafeteria for a delicious dinner. The younger children then gathered in the lower level of the library for an evening that included puppet shows, games, face painting - and yes Poetry and improv by D205 students inspired the audience of friends and reading and listening to stories. family members. The older children and parents gathered in the performing arts center while talented D205 students took the stage. Patricia Brucki and Gina Collier are D205 teachers and also volunteer as poetry coaches. Their program has inspired D205 students to develop their talents in the spoken word. Luqmon Muhammad, a Thornwood student was recently awarded the literary award from Robert Polito, CEO of The Poetry Foundation. In April, Muhammad placed second out of over 1,200 high school students at the 'Louder Than A Bomb' finals in Indianapolis. A night like this would not be possible without a dedicated team. This years team included District faculty and staff including Mike Sanders, Ivy Langs, Lisa Joseph, Claudia Gladstone as well as many others. District 205 students are being inspired to tap the talent within - and to do great things!

for the school system. Sandy and I then moved our dental practice to the Galleria building. We have a great view of US 30 from our corner space on the east side. The only dental chair we use allows us to take care of one patient at a time and our view allows us to see what’s happening around town. In the early 2000s, I started to devote time to make Dyer a better place to work, live and play. Being recognized for my commitment both locally with the Kris Thomas Community Enhancement Award and then statewide with the I.A.C.T. Larry A. Conrad Civic Service Award in 2012, was quite an honor. Sandy and I are just as devoted to our patients; many we have cared for over 30 years. We believe in that home town touch. I do all the cleanings and finish every procedure. Ken Spurlock opened his first store in Dyer back in 1982 on the North side of Route 30 as Delocks Liquors. A few years later the state widened Route 30 and he relocated into Sandridge Plaza, where his son took over the family business. In 1996 he had an itch again and opened Kennan Liquors at Route 30 and Hart Street. He moved to a much larger store on the North side of Route 30 across from the Hospital in 2009. The business has outgrown our parking lot and we have decided to expand again by purchasing three houses North of the store. With a larger parking lot we should be able to help our customer needs better. We look forward to servicing our customers for a long time down the road.

Make Timely Adjustments to Your 529 Plan BOB KRYGSHELD T he s chool ye a r i s coming to a close. And that means your children a re one yea r closer to heading off to college. If y ou’v e a l re ad y be g u n prepa r ing for t hat day w it h a ta x-adva ntaged college-sav ings vehicle, such as a 529 plan, you’re ta k ing a posit ive step, because higher education is expensive. But it’s not enough to just set up your 529 plan — you may also need to adjust it over time. Up u nt i l t h i s yea r, you were only allowed to change the investments in you r 529 pla n once a y e a r. T h i s c a u s e d c onc er n a mon g s ome i nvestors, who wa nted t he freedom to change their 529 investments in response to movements in the financial markets. But late in 2014, President Obama signed into law the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) act and one provision of the ABLE act also allows 529 plan investors to change their investments twice a year, rather than once. If you invest in a 529 plan, you might welcome this additional freedom to adjust your investments. Still, keep in mind that a 529 plan is a long-term vehicle that’s not really designed to accommodate f r e q u e n t “ t w e a k i n g .” And, as is true with any investment account, such as your IR A and 401(k), you don’t want to overreact to short-term market f luctuations by making radical changes to your investment mix. Nonetheless, you will a l most cer ta i n ly wa nt to adjust your 529 plan i nvest ments somewhat — at least in t he long term. The proud Mom/Mayor could not hold back the tears and all the Mom’s in the room knew where she was coming from, as they all felt the same way about their student awardees. Golden Apples were given to the Teachers of the Year. Awards were given out for Academic Achievement, Athletic Achievement, Fine Arts Achievement and Citizenship. Presenters also included City Clerk Nyota Figgs, Fire Chief Bill Galgan, Police Chief Edward Gilmore and Deputy Fire Chief Rich Banske. Amy is the GymN-Learn Educational Preschool Director at Patti’s All-American. Gym-N-Learn is their successful fitness-based educational preschool program for ages 3-5. As a service to the community, moms and dads were invited to hear Miss Amy speak on the topic of kindergarten preparedness. She also discussed academic milestones children are expected to reach before kindergarten and ways parents can help their child reach them. A flash card game was given to each parent to take home to practice the eight basic shapes with their child along with a

tracing worksheet. Patti’s All-American will host another “Lunch & Learn” in the fall of 2015.
