oppor t u n it y to at t ract buyers. A f ter week s or mont h s of m a r k e t i n g you’ll probably cave in to some price reductions, but by the time your house gets to the proper price it’s going to be stale. A home that’s been on the market for ten or twelve months doesn’t demand a lot of respect from buyers. They will probably submit low-ball offers based upon your market time. S o my poi nt i s t hat you’re better off to take a hard look at the research that your agent provides to you, and go with a fair and reasonable price in the first place. You’ll sell a lot faster with a lot less stress, and you’ll probably end up getting a better price in the long run. And then you can get on with your life, which is really what it’s all about anyway. It’s Graduation Season aga in. If your chi ld is g r aduat i ng f rom h ig h school or col lege, you have reason to celebrate. But what should you give to you r newly m i nted diploma holder? You might want to consider offering a combination of financial gifts and tips, which, taken together, could set your graduate on a path toward a successful, independent life. Here are a few ideas: • Give a few sha res of stock. Ever yone should understand the financial ma rkets a nd how t hey work. One great way to encourage this interest is to give your child a few sha res of stock. Young people enjoy ow ning a piece of a company that makes the products and services they like – and the very act of ownership can inspire them to learn more about investing and to ask questions: W hat causes the stock price to go up or down? How long should I hold this stock? Over time, your child can become familiar with investing and how to make the best choices. • E n c o u r a g e your graduate to open an IRA. Your child can open an IRA as long as he or she has some earned income. You might want to suggest that your child consider a Roth IRA, which, at the child’s age and income level, may be a good choice. With a Roth IR A, children can access their contributions at a ny t i me, ta x- a nd penalty-free. They can’t touch t he ea r nings without incurring both ta xes a nd pena lt ies, however, until they reach 59½. But you will want to encourage them to keep the money in their IR A

intact, giving it the chance to grow. • Provide some financial education. Unfortunately, most young people don’t really receive any kind of formal financial educ at ion. Of cou r se, you can tr y to prov ide some of this knowledge to you r ow n ch i ld ren, but, as you know, advice f rom Mom a nd Dad sometimes gets ignored. H o w e v e r, y o u m i g h t get better results if you arrange for your recent graduate to meet with a financial professional. As mentioned above, owning stocks, and following their progress, can teach your children a great deal about investing, but a financial professional can paint the “big picture” and explain how all aspects of money management – such as bor row i ng, budget i ng, s a v i n g a nd i nv e s t i n g – f it t o ge t he r t o he lp individuals stay in control of their finances and make prog ress tow a rd t hei r important financial goals, such as buying a house and retiring in comfort. Recent graduates, whether leav ing high school or college, are at “turning poi nt s” i n t hei r l ive s and can benefit greatly from understanding the importance of developing good, lifelong financial habits. By prov id i ng t hem w it h some appropriate f ina ncia l g if ts a nd valuable advice upon their graduation, they may well be better prepared to keep mistakes to a minimum – while maximizing their a bi l it y to m a ke good decisions. I suspect, but ca n not prove, that some clever thief found a way to file false claim information and receive thousands of dollars in a fraud against the insurance company. Fraud against insurance compa n ies is one of t he factors t hat cause prem iums to increase. W hat w i l l t he federa l government do with the i n f or m a t i on t h a t t h e client and I sent to alert others of this problem? T he help t hat I gave t hese cl ient s wa s f ree of cha rge. CRUISING W ITH GR E AT R I V ERS OF CHICAGO AND CAIC : Once aga in t he Ca lu met A rea Indust r ia l Com m ission has teamed up w it h a couple of great orga nizations to present, ex plore a nd understand what the 3 Great Rivers are all about. The Rivers are the Chicago (that gets dyed green ever y St. Patrick’s Day) the C a lu met R iver a nd t he De s Pla i ne s River. N 2 N tagged along with members and representatives of the Metropolitan Planning Council, the Industrial Water, Waste and Sewage Group, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and CAIC aboard the “Summer of George” tour vessel, moored on Chicago’s near west side. We traveled up and down the Chicago River, under all the bridges, so close the Captain had to tell us to be careful if we tried to reach up and touch t he bottom of t he bridge, show n here going under the Wells Street bridge. The continuous river walk is beautiful and takes up some of the 150 plus mile system. The selfies (cameras) came out as we passed the Trump Tower’s 20 foot high letters, and seeing the Loop from the perspective of the river was awe inspiring. Rehabbing t he R ivers so t hey a re f it to sw im in is the vision of the Chicago Mayor, who has targeted sustainabilit y a long w ith progress in making the rivers safer and more fun asap. The experts on the cruise, Kara Riggio and Madeline Shepherd of the Metropolitan Planning Council are a bit more conservative; however they think that by the projected time of 2040 this may be a reality. In the mean time all 3 organizations are working diligently to make sure that both commerce and recreation play a key part in the ongoing redevelopment of the shoreline. Some of the areas which are the focus on redevelopment include the North Branch, Pilsen, Little Village, Calumet and Addison which are corridor specific visions for Riverfront productivity zones, of which the Calumet River is near and dear to our southeast side and NW Indiana hearts. It is hoped that by 2020 the Calumet Industrial Corridor will become a renowned national model for the co-existence of productive a nd s u s t a i n a b l e i nd u s t r y, t h r i v i n g communities and healthy natural areas. The ‘cruise’ was fun and super informative. Also pictured here are Dave Holmberg of CAIC, Beth of CAIC, Linda Cooney, Jack Brandosch and Gayle Walker. ***
