Purdue Northwest Students Take Paris Unlike typical tourists pouring into Paris during this time of year, Purdue Universit y Nort hwest students are being graded on their photographs of the City of Lights. For the second year in a row, the PNW Art & Photography in Paris study abroad program is offering students the unique opportunit y to explore Paris’s most famous attractions from behind the lens of a camera. The trip itinerary includes visiting locations like the Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower, as well as several modern art museums and privately owned galleries. Dr. T homa s J. Roach, t he department head of PNW Communication and Creative Arts, taught photography for the program last year and has returned with a new group of students. He is accompanied by PNW continuing lecturer and art a f icionado Ken Bronowsk i, who is teaching art appreciation. “Whatever the course subject, study abroad ma kes students more wellrounded,” said Roach. “Going to Paris and meeting artists, producing fine art photographs, and visiting museums to view the broadest possible variety of art contribute to a deeper, more articulated sense of who we are and how we can express ourselves.” Ju n ior PN W com mu n ic at ion

st udent Stepha n ie Ha m i lton feels studying abroad will help her break into the world of public relations one day: “Study ing abroad can benef it my major in communication because it shows I a m w i l l i ng to t r y new things and take on adventures,” said Hamilton. “It’s extremely difficult for
some people to just get up and move to a new country for a long period of time. This shows that I am capable of adapting to new things and becoming skilled at them.” T he g roup w i l l be i n Pa r is for approximately one month, from May 14 to June 10.

Get Your Leadership Fix
Are you ready to get your leadership f i x ? A s Joh n C . Ma x w el l quote d, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” L eadersh ip is a l i fest yle. It is not something you do. It’s who you are. Far too many people don’t want to pay the price for what is required of them. So they stay stuck in a rut. Where there is leadership, there is cause. A cause costs. Someone must sacrifice for the benefit of others. Marriage requires leadership. Parenting requires leadership. Entrepreneurship requires leadership. Mentor sh ip requ i res leader sh ip. Leadership requires you! Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest leaders who ever lived sacrificed his life and career to stand for a cause. His stance cost him 24 years in prison. In spite of all of the odds, he endured. However, when it was all said and done, He became the President of his country. As a result of his unfailing sufferings, submission, and sacrifices, leadership required him to take his rightful place for the sake of his country. What price have you paid that requires your leadership? How long have your trials been preparing you for leadership? Where is your next level for leadership? No matter where you are in life, or what
you have accomplished, please be assured that you have embarked upon a time and season to take your life; business, family, ministry and/or career to the next level. Don’t miss the opportunity! As a Spiritual L e a der/C o a c h /Ment or/P u bl i s her, I challenge you to contact me to learn more about what you need to go to the next level. No man or woman is an island. To get to our next level, it requires that we jou r ney w it h ot hers who have a lso endured and who operate at the same realm of thinking. To experience longterm success, we need each other to lead our future generations. Much is given much is required! What is being required of you? Whatever it is, you are not alone. W hatever it is, it is not impossible. Whatever it is, you were born to execute it through leadership. I beseech you to learn more about Next Level Leadership Media. We have a cong lomerate of ent it ies desig ned to serve, equip and develop mankind (women, young professiona ls, teens, youth) for effective living and leadership. To obtain more information, call 1-855430-LEAD and/or visit our website: www. getyourleadershipfix.com . Follow us on Facebook and twitter (@leadershipfix).

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Quest ion : Homes i n my I l l i noi s neighborhood are still falling. When can we expect that to change with prices starting to rise?
t he residents of Cook Count y w it h a n opportunity to restore our region’s depleted tree canopy. The trees can also be used as a powerful and effective form of green infrastructure. A medium size oak tree can help prevent f looding by absorbing 2,800 gallons of rainfall per year. Pictured are fifth grade students with their potted sapplings.

Answer: I don’t know the answer to this question because it involves a look into the future. I might speculate regarding given neighborhoods and areas. I can look at home sales. I can look at local Inventory. I can look at homes being sold per month and home absorption rates. I can look at price trends over the past few years. I might consider local population growth, whether or not the area job base is expanding, but regardless of which tea leaves I consider at the end of the day -just like economists, stock analysts and bookies -- I can’t know for sure. And, despite claims to the contrary, neither does anyone else.
Home for rent: 3 bdrm. 2 full bath. Sauk Village. Washer/dr yer hook up, d i s h w a s h e r, s t ov e, refrigerator, central air. Sec. 8 welcome. $1000/mo. + sec. deposit. Avail. July. 219-8951097
Question: We signed a ‘side agreement’ as sellers to give the buyers cash at closing for repairs to the property we sold. The repairs were to be done after the closing. We have not paid the funds. We do not have the money. What should we do? Answer: By “side agreement” do you mean a part of the sale arrangement which was not disclosed to the lender? W hen you enter into a real estate agreement which requires f ina ncing by a third-party lender, the lender must be given the entire sale agreement. If the idea of the “side agreement” was to hide information from the lender, then the lender has the right to decline the loan. The lender might also see the loan

application as fraudulent, something no borrower should want. In the same way that lenders should not abuse borrowers, it’s equally fair that borrowers should not abuse lenders. L enders have a r ig ht to a l l deta i ls rega rd i ng a t ra n sac t ion, ot her w ise they’re likely to make erroneous lending decisions. Full disclosure is necessary because the lenders make loans based on the appraised value of the property or the sale value, whichever is less. If lenders do not know all the details of sale agreements then they can make loans which are too large -- thus increasing their risk. A “side agreement” can be seen as a discount on the sale price, meaning that lenders should be making smaller loans -- or maybe no loans. If the agreement was plainly disclosed to the lender within the loan application then you have an obligation to come up with the money because the arrangement is simply a cont ract cont ingenc y. If t he ag reement was hidden f rom t he lender then there may be a question as to whet her such a n a r ra ngement is enforceable. Your job is to contact a local real estate attorney. Immediately.

South Suburban College (SSC) is hosting Open Houses for their Welding Lab on Tuesday, June 7 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., and Thursday, June 9 from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., both in Room L-275 on their Main Campus in South Holland. The public is invited to join SSC and learn more about exciting welding opportunities in careers such as: safety, engineering, robotics, inspections, maintenance, sales, marketing, education, consulting, testing, and of course, welding itself. According to recent reports, more than 200,000 jobs are expected to be available in welding over the next 10 years as the current workforce is approaching retirement and new industry is moving to the region. You can earn more than $50,000 to start and thousands more each year after. SSC t ra ins welders to A merica n Welding Societ y standards in our state-of-the-art welding lab, furnished with Lincoln Electric welders. Come and see the lab with eight welding stations and a welding simulator. College faculty and staff will be on hand to answer questions about welding classes and related programs. SSC offers mini, stackable welding certificates for SMAW (shielded metal arc welding), GMAW (gas metal arc welding), and GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding). Students can earn these smaller certificates while attaining our main welding certificate - Multi-process Welding. For more information, please email Nburrows@ssc. edu or call (708) 596-2000, ext. 3258. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. The Lansing Police Department would like to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated and participated in the recent Dunkin’ Donuts Cop on Rooftop event in support of Special Olympics of Illinois on Friday, May 20th. We were able to raise over $3,150. The Lansing Police Department would also like to acknowledge and give a special thanks to Lansing Dunkin’ Donuts owner Sanjay Tilva, who has graciously allowed the Lansing Police to hold the event at his store for the past six years. This has enabled our department to collect over $15,000 for Special Olympics of Illinois during that period. The Cop on Rooftop event was also held by numerous other Illinois Law Enforcement Agencies at over 200 Dunkin Donuts locations throughout Illinois- setting a new record for money raised. More than $600,000 was collected. The Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run will take place through Lansing and other South Suburbs on Tuesday, June 7th . Call The Plumber. Every year in April, my sisters and I get together downtown in Chicago to celebrate our birthdays. With each trip into the city we’d see a few homeless people scattered up and dow n State St r e e t . T h i s y e a r w a s d i f f e r e nt . Ever y where we wa l ked (Cl i nton, Ra ndolph, Wash ing ton, State, La ke, Waba sh, a nd Mich iga n) t here were masses of homeless people. A few were in cardboard makeshift shelters, some crouched in clefts under viaducts, and others were just sitting or lying on the ground. In the past, the homeless were mostly elderly men. But the vast majority of the homeless people we saw were young adults, male and female, white and black. We met a grandmother with her 2 young grandsons. Her apartment had caught fire due to faulty wiring----she lost everything. She’s on a 6 month waiting list for another apartment. On our way home we gave our leftover food to a group of homeless young adults who asked if they could have it because they were hungry. Thirty days later, I can still see the faces of the people we saw living on the streets. I feel as if I’m witnessing a modern day version of life in Judah (and other nations) prior to its destruction. The political climate was corrupt, favoring the wealthy at the expense of the middle class

and the poor; and justice was perverted and sold for a price. Panhandling and crime were the only means to survival, that is, for those whose hope was in themselves and a failed government. The remnant that remained loyal to God clung to His promise through the prophet Jeremiah, “I know the thoughts I think toward you…thoughts of peace and not of evil to give you a future and a hope” (Jer. 29 :11). Sometimes t he righteous suffer the consequences of the unrighteous, yet in the midst of it God creates an oasis of blessings to those who are faithful to Him. As we brace ourselves for the outcome of the upcoming presidential election, my hope is not in the candidates; my hope rests solely in Christ. For the scripture says t hat “whoever believes in Him, trusts in and relies on Him will not be disappointed or disgraced” (Romans 10 :11). In summa r y, I’ve found t he words of the psalmist to be true. “I once was young and now I’m old. I’ve never seen the righteous abandoned, nor the children of the righteous begging bread” (Psalm 37:25). For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com. WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD BILL, BECK Y AND ELIZABETH: As we work with buyers and sellers in this crazy real estate market of ours, happy endings are the goal. And, it was a truly Happy Ending for Chicago Firefighter Bill, his wife Becky and little Elizabeth. when their search for the perfect house in Hegewisch was realized. Finding just he right house is a journey between buyers and their agents, kicking tires as it were until just the right house comes their way. The same is true for sellers seeking buyers for their homes. After all, a lifetime of TLC has gone into their ‘castle’ and they want it to be appreciated for that tender loving care! What Is Suspect But Can’t Prove
WOODROW WILCOX O n M a y 19 , 2 016 , t he doctor who cha i rs a depa r t ment at a hospita l phoned me and apologized with an explanation that sparked my suspicion. The doctor explained t hat ever since t he med ica l bi l l i ng f i r m that it used was bought by a conglomerate corporation, the medical billing firm has repeatedly bungled bills to pat ient s a nd t hei r insurance companies. The doctor phoned me because about a dozen of our clients have received bills from the billing firm despite the fact that their insurance company had paid all the balances on all the clients’ bills. I have helped five of our clients file complaints with the Indiana Attorney General C on s u m e r P r ot e c t ion Division. In each case, the Attorney General has sided with us. I wrote to the president and chief executive officer of the insura nce compa ny that has done the most pay i ng of bi l l s w h ich w e r e not c r e d it e d t o ou r c l ient s’ a c c ou nt s by t he medica l bi l ling f i r m. I have worked, lived, a nd breat hed by our insurance agency’s commitment to protect our clients from financial harm when someone else in the Medicare system com m its f raud or a mistake. I believe that the tide is turning in our clients’ favor. But, for ma ny sen iors who don’t use a n i nsu ra nce agent or agency that will help to protect them, the result is that THEY PAY MEDICAL BI L L S W H IC H W E R E ALREADY PAID BY THEIR INSURANCE COMPANY. Here is what I suspect because of the doctor’s phone ca l l to me. I suspect that a large corporation could buy a good billing firm and turn it into a Medicare fraud
