As the first recipient of the Lawrence Dujsik Memorial Service Scholarship, Paul Somerville of Seton Academy completed an Arbor Day Service project in South Holland’s Van Oostenbrugge “Van O” Park on Saturday, May 9th. Paul Somerville’s project included planting 15 trees in “Van O” Park along with the help of his Mother: Deidra Somerville, his brother: Michael, his teacher: Ms. Jennifer Gwiazda, and two of his Seton Academy Classmates: Jose’ Garcia and James Wells. Paul was responsible for planning the service project from start to finish, securing volunteers, contacting the city of South Holland, IL for permission to execute the project, and of course completing the project with his volunteers.

The Lansing Police Department would like to say THANK YOU to everyone who donated and participated in the recent Dunkin’ Donuts Cop on Rooftop event in support of Special Olympics of Illinois on Friday, May 29th. We were able to raise over $2,670.00 on that day. The Lansing Police Department would also like to acknowledge and give a special thanks to Lansing Dunkin’ Donuts owner Sanjay Tilva, who has graciously allowed the Lansing Police to hold the event at his store for the past six years. This has enabled our agency to collect over $12,670.00 for Special Olympics of Illinois during that period; all proceeds of which went to Special Olympics. The Cop on Rooftop event was also held by numerous other Illinois Law Enforcement Agencies at over 190 Dunkin Donuts locations throughout Illinois- setting a new record for money raised. Nearly $500,000 was collected this year compared to $430,000 collected in 2014. The Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run will take place through Lansing and other South Suburbs on Tuesday, June 9th.

Camp Shabonna Woods Campground Now Open

The day dawned bright and sunny last week in Shabonna Woods, just East of Torrence Avenue and 159th street in Calumet City (though it's official address is 15810 S. Torrence, South Holland). Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush along with Clerk Nyotta Figgs, Police Chief Edward Gilmore, and Cook County Forest Preserve police all had positive reactions to the grand opening of this section of the County Forest Preserve that had not been used in over 50 years. Adding to the festive atmosphere was the fact that this is the Centennial 100 Year Anniversary of the founding of the Cook County Forest Preserve. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle began the ceremony along with Mayor Michelle and Forest Preserve General Superintendent Arnold Randall who declared that "the Forest Preserves of Cook County are offering more than ever before." In addition to bringing back family camping, the Forst Preserve is providing free activities at each campsite such as archery, campfires, and nature hikes led by Forest preserves staff. Camp Shabonna Woods is just a short Calumet City elected officials and residents assist Forest Preserve walk to the Sand Ridge Nature Center and Superintendent Arnold Randall in cutting the grand opening ribbon. across the street, Green Lake Aquatic Center. The site features cabins, tent pads and RV drive-ups. Fees vary by season and day, but range from as low as $20 for a weekday tent pad, to $200 for a 36-bed bunkhouse for Cook County residents. Non-residents will pay slightly more per night. Peak season rentals begin in April and run through October. Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush thanked President Preckwinkle and Superintendent Randall "on behalf of the people of Calumet City for this beautiful campground," and noted that she expected residents were going to "make great use of the newly opened camping facility!" Concluding the event, Mayor Michelle pronounced the day "perfect! What a great place to enjoy the outdoors all year long and it is right in our own back yard!"

The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging resident s to ta ke t h is oppor t u n it y to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of the free program. New tutor training sessions will take place on the Main Campus on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. from June 3rd through June 18th in Room 1243c.
