Halsted St. in Chicago Heights. An artists’ reception is scheduled from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 11, in the gallery. Artists participating include Sue Cahill, Alicia Forestall-Boehm, Shelley Gilchrist, Carol Hamilton, Brad Hook, Katsy Johnson, Pat Lagger, A hava ni Mu l len, Ju lie R is, Kathy Blankley Roman, Mary Krebs Smyth, Michele Thrane, Karen Tichy, Kathleen Waterloo, and Donna Zarbin-Byrne. “This ex hibition intends to show the wide range of work that can be envisioned and created in encaustic,” said Beth Shadur,
ex h ibit c u r ator a nd ga l ler y d i re c tor. “Expansive Visions enables the Christopher Art Gallery to not only present a wide range of creativity by the exhibition’s participants, but also emphasizes the encaustic medium’s feeling of “expansion” by its ability to create deep imagined space and the illusion of color as a fluid and moving element in the work. “We are pleased to show the profuse variety of works by FUSEDChicago, with its bounty of color, shape, form and idea.” The Christopher Art Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Visits also can be made by appointment. For more information about the exhibit or to make an appointment for a visit, call (708) 709-3636.

My Father is Always at Work! ANNA M. CAISON
Jesus said the Father is ALWAYS at work. Sometimes we miss God working around us because we don’t know what His Work looks like, nor do we know when He’s inviting us to join Him because we spend so little, if any, quiet time in His Presence. T here’s not h i ng more f u l f i l l i ng than being able to discern where God is working and joining Him in that work. Last summer God inv ited me to join Him in His Work in the life of a certain individual. About 8pm t here was a k nock on the door. “Who is it?” I asked. No one answered. I looked out the window and saw who I thought was my brother but when I opened the door I saw it wasn’t him, it was someone unknown to me. “May I cut your lawn, ma’am?” “How much do you charge?” “Do you have a back yard?” “Yes” I replied. “Let me take a look, you don’t have any dogs do you?” “No.” He went around the back of the house to look and returned. “Ma’am, I’ll cut your front and back yard for $20.00.” While he was cutting the grass, I went back to my writing. In my mind I saw Abraham when he welcomed visitors to

his tent and rushed to prepare a meal for them. I suddenly became overwhelmed with the need to prepare dinner for this man that asked to mow my lawn. “Make some cornbread!” I heard the Holy Spirit say. So I quickly got up and made some cornbread. I heated up some spaghetti and my last piece of fried chicken. “What else, Lord? ” I asked. As soon as t he question left my mouth I thought about the “Knowing God Personally” tracts on my desk. I ran upstairs and grabbed one and placed it with the napkins and fork atop the covered plate of food. When he finished, I gave him the $20 and the food I had prepared. “God told me to fix you dinner” I said. “God told you to fix me dinner?” he replied with a look of skepticism. “God said you hadn’t had your dinner, and to fix you a plate to take with you.” “Now, I know there’s a God! You just proved to me that there is! Thank you.” As he walked away from the house I could hear him say, “I’ve got dinner! Thank you, thank you.” For questions and/or comments send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I knew I would have to go through the buyer’s inspection when I accepted this contract, but now I am told that FHA has to inspect my Home and that the repairs they require must be completed in order for the buyer to get their loan. I am not happy about this. Is this correct? Answer: First of all, congratulations on getting an accepted offer on your home. In many markets, that is not easy to do. But that does not mean that the deal will close. Contracts have contingencies that must be satisfied in order for a closing to take place. Example: Contingent on your buyer getting a loan, Contingent on a satisfactory home inspection, Contingent on your home appraising to at least the purchase price, etc. If you have a buyer who is obtaining F H A f i n a nc i n g , y ou r de a l i s a l s o contingent on you completing the repairs required by the FHA inspector/appraiser. The FHA inspector is an appraiser sent to determine the value of the home and look for significant deficiencies according to FHA criteria such as obvious mold
growth, chipped paint on windows older than 1978, broken glass, lack of GFCI’s by sinks, etc. If they find defects then they will require repairs which they will reinspect, to ensure the repairs were made correctly. These required repairs are usually minor if the homeowner has kept their home in good shape. You a re not required to do t hese repa i r s. You may s ay no a nd look for a not her buyer t hat is obta i n i ng conventional financing or paying cash. The problem is that in many markets, t he v a s t m a jor it y of a l l qu a l i f ie d buyers a re usi ng FH A f i na nci ng. How to protect yourself when renting
ARTHUR V. VEAL IV I f you a re someone who has rented a home in the last few years then you may know that it is not a ll t hat its cracked up to be. There are many pitfalls that can stop you from enjoying your rental not to mention that some problems ca n rea l ly affect your pocketbook. So I thought that I would m e n t i on s om e o f t h e problems that can occur with rentals and how you can avoid them and have a good relationship with your landlord or manager. Problem 1: Failure to pay mortgage T h e r e a r e a l ot o f families that have rented a home a nd t he ow ner fails to ma ke pay ments to the mortgage company and the home goes into foreclosu re. W h i le t h is isn’t illegal it can cause a n u ndue ha rdsh ip on your fa mily as a renter because you may have to u nex pe c te d l y move from a home before your lease is up. The best way to protect yourself from this is to simply ask the ma nager or la nd lord if the home is in foreclosure and also do a quick search on the propert y online. Sometimes a home may show as as a foreclosure but it can be older so if you find something ask about it. Problem 2: Ma na ger wont ma ke

This can sometimes be an issue for large managers as well as small landlords. There is nothing more frustrating t hen consta nt ly ca lling to get a rear completed a nd b e i n g i g nor e d or promised time after time. The best way to deal with this is to write a letter. If you are ever forced to go to court over an issue then the party with the most papers win. So you want to document your issues and how you have tried to get the manager to fix them and send the manager a copy asking them to again make the repair. Why Can’t I Talk? MIKE BUDER W hen I newly list a home for sa le, the first thing that I counsel the homeow ner about is showings. The other day one of my sel lers sa id “I’v e l i s t e d m y hom e and I can’t always leave when it’s being show n. Why are you so adamant that I not talk to buyers or their agents? ” You’ve listed your home for sale at a very challenging time. You’re facing some stiff competition in the South Suburbs of Chicago. You don’t wa nt a potent ia l buyer to wa l k because of a slip of the tongue. Let’s go back to agency relationships. I am your agent. I represent you, the seller. But when potential buyer s c ome t h roug h, t hei r agent s represent them. The buyer’s agent w i l l most l i kely sha re a l l in for mat ion ga ined f rom t he sel ler, or t he sel ler’s agent. I’l l g ive a n exa mple. I recent ly showed a house and the seller was home. I asked the seller if she was tired of people coming traipsing t hrough her home. She a n s wered, say i ng t hat we were only the second s how i n g a pp oi nt me nt she’d had since the house was listed and that she didn’t mind because she rea lly wanted to move. Seems innocent enough, right? Wrong! That told me a lot and I shared it with my buyer cl ient s. T he home had been on t he

market for 108 days and we were only the second appointment. W hat does that say; not much interest and a frustrated seller. I also shared the fact that the seller was anxious to move, so they might accept less if we of fer a qu ic k c losi ng. That seemingly innocent respon se w i l l g ive my buyers a n adva ntage shou ld t he y dec ide to m a k e a n of f e r. D on’t get me w rong; we’ll be upfront and honest in our dealings with buyers and their agents. But listing and showing your home is just a piece of the process. When we move onto the next step in this journey, negotiating an offer, let’s make sure that we’re in t he st rongest posit ion to negotiate the highest price for your home. Try to separate yourself from the showing if at all possible. Should You Make Investment Moves Based On a Strong Dollar? BOB KRYGSHELD Cu r rent l y, t he U.S. dollar is pumped-up and powerful. But what does a strong dollar mean to you, as an investor? To be g i n w it h, it ’s important to understand just what is meant by a “strong” dollar. The U.S. dollar does not exist in a vacuum — its value, from a g lob a l p e r s p e c t i v e , is deter m i ned by its changing strength relative to that of other currencies. Let’s look at an example: In 2011, if you wanted to trade in one dollar for its equivalent value in euros your dollar would have converted to about .75 of a euro. Fast for ward to ea rly 2015 you r dol la r would fetch you almost one f ull euro. In ot her words, you can buy more euros because the dollar is “stronger.” A nd it isn’t just t he euro; the dollar is strong aga i nst a l most ever y other major currency in the world. What has led to this strength? It’s not always easy to determine w hat ’s beh i nd foreig n exchange rates — which can f luctuate even more t ha n t he stock ma rket — but the recent surge in the dollar seems to be due, at least in part, to its obv ious con nect ion to the American economy, which has been growing faster than many other econom ies a rou nd t he world. It is also due to expectations that interest rates will remain higher in the U.S. than in many other countries. But whatever t he reasons for it, t he dol l a r ’s st reng t h m ay b e h a v i n g a n i mp a c t on y ou r i nv e s t ment s . A st reng t hening dol la r typically lowers returns from internationa l i nvest ment s because you get fewer dollars in exchange for the value in foreign currencies. And some U.S. companies with

a g loba l presence may face cha l lenges due to lower earnings from their international operations. These resu lts mig ht lead you to think that a strong dollar would be bad news for the stock market, but that hasn’t been the case in the past. At dif ferent t imes, t he markets have performed well with both a strong and a weak dollar. In contrast, a strong dollar can help foreign compa nies compete a nd may give t hem a n ea r n i ngs boost f rom t heir U.S. sa les. It ca n a lso help ma ke foreign invest ments “cheaper.” Even more importantly, by ta k ing advantage of the stronger dollar and investing an appropriate amount internationally, gaining exposure to different economies and ma rkets, you ca n help diversif y your holdings, wh ich is i mpor ta nt. Although diversification can’t guarantee a profit or always protect against loss, it can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. Be aware, though, that international investing carries special r isk s beyond cu r renc y f luctuat ions, including politica l and economic instability. T he st rong dol la r may have attracted your attent ion, but don’t be d ist racted by it — and don’t overreact. Currency exchange rates c a n f luc t uate r apid ly, and no one can predict how long a strong dollar environment will last. By sticking with a solid, longterm investment strategy, you can help keep up the “strength” of your ow n dollars. Lottery Winners and Losers
ARLO KALLEMEYN If you are reading this, it probably mea ns you didn’t win the lottery last week. Private gambling l i ke of f ice pools a re illega l, but government sponsored ga mbl i ng is lega l - and encouraged with a cute model picking the numbers every night on t he e ven i ng ne w s. Gambling is illegal unless the government runs the game. Politicians have even encouraged people to buy more lottery tickets to support education. A generat ion ago, people would never even think about using dollars from i m mora l behav ior to benef it ch i ld ren. Now it’s v iewed a s nor ma l. W hat’s next – legalizing a l l i l lega l behav ior so the government can tax it? The ends justif y the means – which is typical behavior in Illinois. Here are some c om ment s f r om s ome others who did not win. Some of t he comments were h i la r iou s, ot her s honest. Here are the top picks:
Maggy: “I guess 1,2,3,4,5 with a Mega ball of 6 was a bad choice?” Brian: “Guess I told my boss ‘to shove it’ a little e a r l ier t h a n I s hou ld have...” Queenie : “Is a ny Lotto money st i l l goi ng to ED-Joo-KAY-shun?” Nor ma n : “Wel l hone y, t here is bad news a nd t here is good news....... the bad news is that we didn’t w in a ny t hing in t he Mega Lotter y......t he good news is that we won’t be he a r i ng f rom you r relatives.” J u s t i n : “A t l e a s t n o t winning saves a whole lot of deleting of Facebook friends this morning.” W ho else but t he government can take in millions from gambling and tell us to trust them to spend it wisely. I guess it works as long as we don’t ask too many questions. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher a nd big fan of watching the gover nment commit highway robbery.

TOM DREESEN COMES TO MUNSTER PERFORMING ARTS CENTER: The Harvey born and bred comedian will be appearing Friday June 12 and Saturday June 13 at the acclaimed Center for the Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road in Munster and his friends and fans are wild with excitement! The down- to- earth Dreesen, who plays poker every Sunday afternoon with luminaries such as Angie Dickensen and Shirley MacLaine, Robert Wagner, and Jill St. John (among many others we have seen on the big screen) at Barbara Sinatra’s estates in Palm Springs and Malibu, never forgot where he came from and on occasion goes back to revisit where he lived in poverty with his 8 brothers and sisters. Despite his harsh and humble beginnings, Dreesen, in the past 47 years, has become one of this country’s most beloved comedians who was, for 14 years, the opening act for Frank Sinatra, and who became like family to the fabled crooner. He was on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson 61 times, (500 appearances in all on various programs) and is a Las Vegas regular in the main showrooms, along with numerous appearances in television and in motion pictures. He came home to the Southland several years ago for a fundraiser with his “From Shining Shoes to Sinatra,” which was hugely successful! This time he enthralls with “An Evening of Laughter and Memories of Sinatra,” a tribute to the 100th anniversary of Sinatra’s birth, where he displays his critically acclaimed comedy skills and his fabulous storytelling ability, one of the traits which caused Sinatra to treat him like a son. Tom is Dad to Amy, Tom and Jennifer with former wife Maryellen Sebock and is very concerned about our youth of today and has created a Fatherhood Initiative on responsible parenting. Much more on this remarkable and altruistic performer in a future N 2 N. In the meantime, there may be a few tickets left for Tom’s appearance in Munster for the Friday June 12th show. Saturday is sold out. Call them at 219836-1930 for more information. Special Thanks to Mike Sanow for Tom’s contact info in California! *** C O M M U N I T Y C O N V E R S AT I O N S -RECREATION AND HERITAGE IN THE CALUMET REGION: The Calumet Region was long known as a sportsmen’s paradise for the quality and quantity of its hunting and fishing opportunities. Your reporter in a past life, worked for the senior, Dr. Romeo A. Pallotto as his dental assistant for many years in his South Chicago dental office. Nicky’s son Anthony also a dentist, (third generation dental practitioners) and Nicky’s lovely wife Jan is a hygienist-- all in their Lansing dental office. Years back Nick’s Mom Eleanor also worked there when Dad Dr. Romeo was semi retirement. Nicky grew up on the East Side and moved to Lansing when he and his Dad bought the offices on Burnham and 186th. Nicky and Jan are very aware of the fact that many are in need of dental services and give back to the community. Oh yes, back to the lead.....Best Looking etc. I don’t want to embarrass him, but he is gorgeous! Looks just like his Dad, Dr. Rome! *** For inclusion in Neighbor 2 Neighbor, please call Janice at 708-302-8585 or write to her C/O Coldwell Banker, 20 E.
