Cop on Rooftop The Lansing Police Department would like to say THANK YOU to everyone who donated and participated in the recent Dunkin’ Donuts Cop on Rooftop event in support of Special Olympics of Illinois on Friday, May 30th. We were able to raise over $2,500.00 on that day. The Lansing Police Department would also like to acknowledge and give a special thanks to Lansing Dunkin’ Donuts owner Sanjay Tilva, who has graciously allowed the Lansing Police to hold the event at his store for the past five years. This has enabled us to collect $10,000.00 for Special Olympics of Illinois during that period; all proceeds of which went to Special Olympics. The Cop on Rooftop event was also held by numerous other Illinois Law Enforcement Agencies at over 150 Dunkin Donuts locations throughout Illinois- setting a new record for money raised. More than $400,000 was collected.

Dr. Carl E. King, Sr., pastor of Christ Community, affirms “Violence is at epidemic proportions in our surrounding communities—whether by bullet or by bully. Our region’s gun and gang violence makes national headlines. Yet there are many forms of violence and, as a church and community, we want to deal with relationship basics that are at the heart of other forms of violence. We

Neuromas

Neuromas are a scarring of a sheath surrounding the nerve. They usually occur between the 3rd and 4th toes but can be found elsewhere as well. Symptoms include feeling a click in the ball of the foot, or electrical shocks shooting to the ends of the affected toes. Surgery is nearly always needed to alleviate the symptoms although injections, padding or physical therapy can help. If you have any questions concerning neuromas or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

The heavy rain from a recent storm overwhelmed the storm water system in Calumet City, causing an explosion in a sewer that’s part of the Deep Tunnel system. This left a massive crater at Veterans Park at 165th and Burnham Ave. Rain falling at a rate of up to 2 inches per hour built up so much pressure in a sewer tunnel, it caused a “hydraulic explosion” that blew off a concrete slab and manhole cover, according to MWRD executive director David St. Pierre. “Water is coming in at tremendous pace. That water builds up that air pressure,” he said. “Water is displacing air, so you have a combination of hydraulic water pressure and air pressure, and that force is Bryan Swanson and Denise Rzonca of the Economic Development department join Mayor Michelle to review progress at the Deep Tunnel project. extremely powerful.” Neighbors said they heard the explosion, and when they looked out of their windows, they saw a geyser gushing from the massive hole in the ground. Other neighbors said the water gushed higher than the telephone wires. Large rocks and debris sprayed everywhere, however, no homes were damaged, and no one was injured. St. Pierre said engineers installed vents after a similar, but less intense, problem last year. “We put in some restrictors in the past that help restrict that pressure, so that it bleeds off. We put in some vents so that air can escape,” he said. “Obviously, we’re going to have to do some more investigation and calculations and see what we can do this time.”

Calumet City Mayor, Michelle Qualkinbush, met with engineers of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District last Tuesday for an update on the repair to the Deep Tunnel. They Mayor Michelle inspects repairs to Deep Tunnel site with MWRD reported that a larger cover is being installed at engineer. both the South and North locations of the park. These larger covers will have numerous air holes in place so that when large volumes of water occur, the pressure is vented safely. Illinois Department of Natural Resources was also at the meeting to offer their input on green infrastructure. Ideas including permeable pavers and rain gardens were discussed for future projects in Calumet City and the Memorial Park District. All parties agreed to future meetings, with public safety being the main priority. Venting cover at north end of park is being enlarged for safety.

When Life Throws A Curve Ball ANNA M. CAISON If anyone had told me 10 years ago that I’d be single, uprooted from my home, and raising a grand-daughter, I would not have believed it. I thought at this age with our children long gone having established lives of their own, we’d (my ex and I) be enjoying retirement while sharing and doing ministry together. And that’s just the short lists of curve balls thrown at my carefully laid plans. Life is full of curve balls---unexpected changes to our plans that leave us in a state of shock, confusion, and despair. So, what do you do when life throws you a curve ball? Take your stance in the Word of God and hit a home run! The word that Isaiah spoke to Israel is relevant to us today------No weapon (cu r ve ba l l) for med aga i nst us ca n defeat us or knock us out (Isa. 54:17). I hadn’t planned on being divorced but it happened. Does being divorced mean I’ve become devalued, that I’m no longer a whole person? Absolutely not! My worth and wholeness isn’t linked to having a

husband, it’s in being in relationship with Christ. My life is different, but not defeated. Nor is it void of purpose and fulfillment. I hit that curve ball and made a home run! G et t i ng bac k i nto t he g a me of pa rent i ng w a sn’t a s ha rd a s I had envisioned. I was striking out for a while because I kept looking at it as a hindrance to what I thought I should be doing at this stage in my life. But when I looked at this curve ball through the purposes of God, I hit a home run. What curve balls have life thrown at you; unemployment, underemployment? Don’t st r i ke out by succu mbi ng to despair? Take your stance in the risen Ch r ist a nd h it a home r u n ! He has promised to meet every need (Matt. 6:33). In Him we are more than conquerors--home runs are guaranteed! For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net or you may write me at Anna Caison, P.O. Job Fair Brings Employers and Job Applicants Together

Applicants Looks Forward to the Fair ________________________

For a first time effort, Michelle Simmons, A s si st a nt Di re c tor of Ma rket i ng a nd Business Development at the iconic Calumet City shopping center and architect of the event noted with pride, “It was great and tenants were appreciative that we were proactive in creating a way for them to screen applicants!” The job fair was held on Thursday May 29th, 2014 and attracted some 60 applicants to participant stores. T hose stores i ncluded Au nt ie A n ne’s Cubs tickets Section 209 Row 14, Seats 2 & 3, June 21, 22, 27, 28, $47; June 23, 24, 25, 26 $36 ea. Pretzels, Bachrach B2; DEB Shops, F.O.G. Cosmet ics, 5-7-9 f r y, Piercing Pagoda, Rainbow, and Zales. Simmons said she would like to have a similar event in the fall when there is a general increase of job seekers looking for seasonal work and when stores will be looking for holiday staff. The job fair took place in the Mall food court from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guests were invited to meet with hiring managers from several mall retailers to learn more about available positions and participate in screening interviews. “One reason our shoppers love coming to River Oaks Center is the wonderful sales associates they get to interact with,” noted Simmons. “The job fair was a wonderful opportunity for guests to be apart of that tradition, while earning some extra money at the same time. River Oaks Center is known throughout South Suburban Chicago and Northwest Indiana as the place for quality shopping. Located on the corner of 159th and Torrence Avenue, the shopping mall boasts more than 125 specialty retailers. Among the variety of stores River Oaks Center features: Macy’s, JC Penney, Victoria’s Secret, F.O.G Cosmetics, Aeropostale, Food Locker and more.

Question: My husband and I found a house we really like that was originally for sale six months ago for $299,000. The property was bought two years ago for $290,000, the price has now been lowered to $279,000 and listed as a short sale. They haven’t received any offers on the property, there is a lot of work to be done and I don’t feel it’s worth near the amount they are asking, especially in the current real estate market. I would also like to get the house inspected to see how much more work needs to be done. My question -- what is exactly a short sale? How much typically (10-20%) can you expect the lender to take off the purchase price? How can I find out exactly what the bank/owner would accept as an reasonable offer as I don’t want to offend them, but want to get the lowest price as possible for this house.

will try to limit the discount as much as possible. Third, don’t worry about “offending” t he ow ner, t he broker or t he lender. Buy ing a home is not a high school dance, ever yone involved is an adult. A lternatively, treat a ll parties to t he t ra nsact ion respect f u l ly a nd t r y to u nder st a nd t hei r i nter e st s a nd motivations. Your goal as a buyer is to acquire the property with the best possible price and terms. If the other side is unhappy with your offer they will ignore it, decline or make a counter-offer. However, if they can’t do better they may well accept your offer, whether they like it or you. You r of f e r s hou ld c e r t a i n l y b e dependent on a professional property inspection satisfactor y to you by an inspector of your choice.

Answer: Let’s take ‘em one at a time. First, a short sale is a home that is being sold for less than the value of the mortgage. This cannot happen unless the lender agrees and often lenders will not agree. Second, the size of the discount will depend on your local market. There is no set amount or percentage. What you can universally expect is that the lender

The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CH A RGE. This agency takes pride in giving our senior citizen clients help with such problems. Does you r insu ra nce agenc y give this high standard of service to its senior citizen clients? If not, why not.

O n Ju ne 4, 2014, a client brought bills and i nt e r e s t i n g s t or ie s t o me. The client is from Merrillville, Indiana. Her doctor’s claims for treating her on March 25 and March 31 of this year were denied by Medicare. That means that Medicare won’t help her to pay those bills. The reason? Medicare ruled that the doctor could not possibly have treated her because she was in a hospice under the care of other medical ser v ice prov iders. The problem is that our client, her daug hter, a nd her g ra nddaug hter were in my office and each told me t hat our client had never been in a hospice. Medicare’s records were wrong. I spent about an hour w it h t h is cl ient a s we phoned her i n su ra nce provider, Medicare, and s ome me d ic a l s er v ic e providers to learn what t hei r re c ord s showe d . Then, I typed a letter for the client and she signed it. The letter laid out the facts of what errors were in Medicare’s records and asked t hat t he records

A Real Estate Pro MIKE BUDER In ever y profession, t here a re pe ople w ho stand out in t heir f ield a nd t hey a re ca l led professionals. They are men a nd w omen w ho possess t he educ at ion and distinctive qualities of t heir t rade w it h confidence. I have seen professiona l cooks, elect r icia ns, plumbers, doctors, nu rses, bus drivers, military personnel a nd ma ny ot her s w ho change your life just by being professional in what they do. A profe s sion a l re a l estate agent is more than just a person who has a license. They like what t he y do a nd it show s up i n t hei r da i ly l i fe. They are well rounded, i nv it i ng, approachable and likable. Professional agents k now what t hey a re t a l k i ng about a nd more importantly…they k now when t hey don’t k now about somet hing and they say so. This is called credibility! They can genuinely listen and then decide to comment or not . W hen c a l le d upon, a pro ca n focus and do their part without hesitation. In real estate, many times it is the largest transaction of a person’s life, ever yone wants an agent t hat is ava ilable. Professionals know better t ha n to not respond realizing that in real estate communications are vital. A professional will always develop themselves into a marketable value. They do not bring up money… in fact, they are the last to bring up the subject. You wa nt t hem a nd it

is understood that they reasonably charge for their services. You are glad to have found them and they are content to do what t hey love, k now ing t he results will follow. Real estate pros a re current on what is going on in the market and can comment in layman’s terms. They k now t hei r docu ments a nd what is needed i n w r it i ng to suppor t, protect and accomplish a successful transaction. E t h i c s , h o n e s t y, a n d i nteg r it y lea k out of their pores. Professional rea l est ate a gent s a re not bound by rituals or mechanics and can also think outside of the box. If things get rough and toug h, t hey ca n f i n ish what was started. They don’t just concentrate on the problem but instead focus on a solution. A professional will always ow n t hei r act ions a nd not produce excuses. In conclusion…a real estate professiona l ca n be counted on to get you to the promised land. JOB FAIR IN RIVER OAKS CENTER BRINGS OUT THE HOPEFULS: Pictured here are Amber Blue, Dana Jennings, Eric Knox and Titania Mason, all of Chicago as they went through the potential job offerings at the recent River Oaks job fair in Calumet City. This is a first time effort and the brainchild of Michelle Simmons, Assistant Director of Marketing and Business Development at the iconic center. The job fair was held on Thursday May 29th and some 60 candidates showed up to try out for jobs. Stores participating included Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, Bachrach B2, DEB Shops, FOG Cosmetics, 5-7-9 fry, Piercing Pagoda, Rainbow and Zales. The highly proactive Simmons noted that she regularly ‘walks the mall’ and determined that many stores were hiring and had such notices in their windows. “So, I thought, why not have a job fair to help this along, both for the stores and for the job seekers,” she said. River Oaks Center has been a landmark in Calumet City since it was built in 1965. It was enclosed some years later and has been a go to place to shop for many years in the South Suburbs. As a matter of fact, locals will remember when ‘downtown’ Hammond was a shopping mecca with Minas, JC Penny, Goldblatts and Rosalee to name a few. With the advent of River Oaks, shoppers shifted their attention toward Calumet City and the rest is history. *** L O C A L K E Y B OA R D I S T K E E N A N BAXTER TO HIGHLIGHT AREA PUBS: Keenan, who writes and arranges his own material will be appearing at Tomfoolery Comedy Club in Munster on Saturday June 14th (4 regionally known comedians will also take the stage that night). And, on Friday June 20th from 8 to 11, Keenan will perform at Langel’s Pizza in Highland, In. Upcoming events include The Gary Railcats on August 2nd, Pierogi Fest in Whiting, July 26th and the LaPorte Farmer’s Markets June 28th and

July 26th. Looks like a musical summer season in our towns. *** SOUTH HOLL AND BUSINESS ASSOCIATION TO HOST BIZ AFTER HOURS: At Jimboo’s Italian Beef, 106 Margaret Street, in Thornton, from 5 to 7 p.m. The festive event will feature refreshments and networking. Please RSVP to info@shba.org *** LYNNIE QUES-- HOME OF HEAVENLY HICKORY SMOKED RIBS, CHICKEN AND CHOPS in Lansing, will be participating in the June 14, 2014 Cruise Night and on August 1st, 2014, a reunion of the Class of 1974 Thornton Fractional South will be held at the Lansing Country Club. Lynn Cartwright, owner of Lynnie Ques is helping to coordinate the reunion so you may call her at 708243-7386 for more information .By the way, if in the neighborhood of 192nd and Burnham where Lynnie Ques is located, drop by and find out what the daily special is in soup and other heavenly stuff. Who needs to cook if Lynn is behind the stove? For something quick, own about 5 Sloppy Joes for $5 every day? Also, ask about the Piggy, Piggy pork chop, new on the menu for a lunch box sandwich. School lunch never tasted this good! *** GRANT BEHYMER COMES FROM INUIT ROYALTY. I’ve written about Grant before as a parts specialist at Factory Motive Parts in Highland, In but didn’t know this about him until recently. His mother is a full blooded Inuit Indian and hails from Newfoundland and Labrador where he was born and raised. Her name is Lillian Daphne White and together with her family has donated hundreds of Inuit artifacts to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago where a room is named for her family. In case you are wondering as I was, just where on the map is Newfoundland and Labrador, (yes, where the dogs came from) it is off the eastern coast of Canada and accessible by plane only. Grant has been here since 1988 and goes back ‘home’ infrequently, but his mom was here recently for visit and reportedly loved the visit, but still preferred home. The Inuit’s are a hardy people known for their crafts and woodwork along with fishing and hunting prowess. Blessings to Lillian and her family and tribe! *** F L AG D AY G AT H E R I N G AT T H E LANSING VETERAN’S MEMORIAL: If you are looking for the proper and respectful way of disposing of a used and tattered American flag, this will be the place to bring it to. The event takes place on Saturday June 14th, 2014 at the Lansing Veteran’s Memorial, 195th and Burnham Avenue, Lansing Municipal Airport. We are invited to join the Lansing Memorial Ceremonial Honor Guard and learn how to ‘retire’ the flag. Flag etiquette information will be available and flags and other patriotic items will also be available. For more information contact Rich at 708-8627731 or Larry at 708-474-3049. *** NOTE TO N 2 N readers: I am looking for a parrot, preferably an African grey congo of any age for my granddaughters. If anyone knows of a family with such a bird who needs to ‘rehome’ them, in other words can no longer care for them, my granddaughters will give the bird(s) a loving home! As always, Shopper readers are the best! Thank You! *** For inclusion in Neighbor 2 Neighbor, please call Janice at 708-302-8585 or write to her C/O Coldwell Banker, 20 E. US 30, Schererville, In 46375 or e-mail her at janice.mintonkutz@cbexchange. com
