Theatre at the Center Announces 2017 Season Theatre at the Center is announcing its first season under the leadership of new Artistic Director Linda Fortunato. The season opens with My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra, followed by Kander and Ebbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tony Award winning Cabaret. Next will be the Chicagoland premiere of The Tin Woman by Sean Grennan, then Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and closing the season is A Wonderful Life: The Musical. Jeff award-winner Fortunato will direct three of the five productions. William Underwood will serve as music director for the season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m excited to announce Theatre at the Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2017 season,â&#x20AC;? said Fortunato. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In my first opportunity to choose a season, I wanted to find a variety of engaging pieces for our audience, including different genres, themes, time periods, and musical styles. I look forward to bringing these terrific stories to life on our stage,â&#x20AC;? she added. Leading off the season is My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra, which traces the legendary career of Frank Sinatra as four actors share more than 50 of his beloved hits. My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra opens February 9 and continues through March 19, 2017. Next up is the Tony Award winning Broadway musical Cabaret. Set at the Kit Kat Klub in 1930s Berlin, where a mischievous Emcee invites us to join cabaret singer Sally Bowles and an American writer searching for inspiration, in a world on the brink. Cabaret opens May 4 and runs through June 4. This summer audiences will enjoy The Tin Woman. The Tin Woman is a beautiful blend of family, humor and hope. Inspired by a true story, Joy has had a heart transplant and is questioning her second chance in life. When she connects with the family of her donor, together they learn what it means to truly give oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart. The Tin Woman runs July 13 through August 13, 2017. Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the musical telling of Mark Twainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s treasured tale. Led by melodies of countr y, bluegrass a nd gospel, join t he humorous and harrowing river journey of Huck and his friend Jim as they meet up with con-artists, reunite with Tom Sawyer and encounter a collection of characters which could only be dreamed up by one of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest writers. Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn which opens September 14 and continues through October 15, 2017. And to usher in the holiday season, Theatre at the Center presents A Wonderful Life: The Musical. Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winner Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof) captures the magic of the Frank Capra holiday film. George Baileyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Christmas Eve is transformed by an angel eager to earn his wings by showing the guiding influence one person has on so many others. Filled with the beauty of the season, Bedford Falls bursts on stage with yuletide spirit (despite Old Man Potterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s miserly plans) for a musical that applauds the true meaning of Christmas. A Wonderful Life: The Musical runs November 16 through December 23, 2017. The 2017 season subscription renewals begin August 21 and new subscriptions will be available beginning October 11. Driving-Tests.org is a company dedicated to driver safety and education, to offer free DMV practice tests to library patrons. Tyranny of the 1% ANNA M. CAISON I recently watched the documentary “Requiem for t he A merica n Drea m” presented by Noam Chomsky. In the film Mr. Chomsky presents facts that show the founding fathers of our constitution designed our government to favor and protect the wealthy few (from the general population) by putting the control of the country in their hands. The reasoning behind t his being, t he accumulated wealth of the wealthy proved they were more responsible; and, the fear that if the general population were given a real role in government they would try to create equality among all Americans that would weaken the power structure of the wealthy. Therefore, America is not a democracy, it’s a republic (as our pledge to the American Flag declares). In a republic, politicians are elected by the genera l population to determine what is best for the country. Regardless of the promises campaigning politicians ma ke to represent t he v iews of t he general population, once elected, the majority pursue their personal agenda and the agenda of the wealthiest 1% they sold themselves to. According to t he documenta r y, t he only time t he United States practices true democracy is t hroug h act iv ism. Aga in, t his is additional proof that this country has never been by nature of its government a Christian nation.

Their mother died when t hey were young a nd Did i, w ho’s much older than Gigi, has taken over t he job of ra ising Gigi. Didi has very high expectations of Gigi. It’s a l l a bout s chool work . Didi expects straight A’s in every subject, leaving little time for friends or a social life of any kind. Despite Didi’s focus on Gig i’s g rades, t he g irls have a unique relationship with clever inside jokes and a love of cooking. The two use a cookbook that belonged to their mom to create a dish that responds to a variety of situations such as “Madder’n Heck Smashed Potatoes” and “L ove at Fi r st S a lad .” There are two things that Gigi clings on to in order to remember her mother. The first is the cookbook w h ich i nclude s word s of w i sdom w it h ever y recipe. The second is a d iscont i nued shade of lipstick ca lled Cherries in the Snow. Un for t u nately not everyone is enamored by Leia, the new student. One girl, Mace, is obviously jealous of Gigi’s new friendship with Trip a nd s ay s s ome pret t y horrible things about Gigi and her home life. Mace even goes so far as to go to Didi’s hair salon with the intention of making Gigi feel terrible. However, things don’t go according to pla n a nd Mace a nd D id i b e c om e f r ie nd s . G i g i h a s t he l i f e s he wanted, but apparently it comes at the expense of her relationship with Didi. Things get even worse when Mace a nd Didi become unexpected f riends. Gig i’s quest to located a tube of Cherries in the Snow for Didi to try to smooth out some of their issues leads her to an answer to a question she never thought she’d find. Gen Xers Must Juggle Both Money and Time BOB KRYGSHELD I f y ou’r e a n olde r member of Generat ion X – that is, if you were born in the early- to-mid1960s – you may have a lot of “balls in the air.” You are saving for your own retirement – which might not be that far away – while at the same time possibly wanting to help pay for your children’s college education. A nd you may also be assisting you r ag i ng pa rents i n some ways. How can you manage this juggling act? Start by emphasizing your retirement. Now that you are likely in, or near, your peak earning years, you should contribute as much as you can afford to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. Your plan likely offers you a range of investment options, so you can create a portfolio t hat ’s appropr iate for you r needs. T h is pla n money can grow on a taxdeferred basis, and your contributions are typically made with pretax dollars. So, the more you put in, t he lower your a nnua l taxable income. You won’t have to pay ta xes until you ta ke w it hd rawa ls, but if you do withdraw money before you reach 59½, the withdrawals may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty. Even i f you’re contributing to a 401(k) or simila r plan, you’re probably still eligible to contribute to an IRA. Like a 401(k), a traditional IRA offers tax-deferred growth potential, while a Roth IRA can provide tax-free earnings distributions if you’ve had your account at least five years and don’t ta ke w it hdrawa ls until you’re at least 59½. If you devote most of your investable income to your ret irement plans, you may not have much left to help pay for your children’s college educat ion. But t hat may not be a disaster – after all, they could get scholarships and financial aid. And even if they need
