Indiana Premiere at the Towle Theater The Towle Theater continues its 12th season with the musical The Burnt Part Boys with generous support from their 2015 Season Sponsor Accucraft Imaging. This musical is under the direction of Jeff Casey, Managing Director of the Towle Theater. Musical Direction is by Lisa Kristina. Locally named The Burnt Part, the Pickaway Coal Company’s South Mountain closed down after an accident in 1952 that resulted in the death of four miners, three of which left behind children. Ten years later, Jake Twitchell is an employee of that same company, doing the same job that took his own father’s life. Much to the dismay of his movie buff, younger brother Pete, the Pickaway Coal Company is going to begin re-mining The Burnt Part and send down both Jake and Jake’s friend, Chet, whose father also died in the South Mountain accident. Inspired by his silver screen heroes, Pete sets out for The Burnt Part with his saw-playingbest-friend Dusty, a pack full of dynamite, and plans to render it useless. With Jake and Chet in hot pursuit, Pete and Dusty are in need of a guide and find a perfect Sacajawea in the young runaway Frances, who also lost her father in the accident. Dangerous and heart-warming discoveries comprise every theatrical layer of the adventure on the road to the mine. The set requirements for this show posed a challenge to the staff. How do you make it appear that they are traversing a mountain and a mine with limited stage space? Jeff Casey and Kevin Bellamy were up to that challenge. They have constructed modular moving platforms of different heights and creatively used crates and benches to represent other set

elements. “It forces you to think outside the box and be very clever with the tools you have” says director, Jeff Casey. Over the past few years, the Towle has been known for producing small cast musicals. For this show, the cast requirements were a bit unusual calling for eight men and one female. The Towle is very fortunate to have a cast of singers/actors with equally powerful voices that blend beautifully. The music is a combination of contemporary and folk music with ver y tight harmonies. The cast is

Hammer Toes
Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Ladies Get Pampered At Midwest Party, Proceeds Benefit Breast Cancer Research When Midwest Insurance Center held their first Ladies Night Out at the Schererville office, 944 W Us Highway 30, event organizers Melissa Vis and Katie Norman said it was important that the $1,000 raised that evening stayed in NW Indiana to benefit friends and neighbors. “We decided we wanted the proceeds to go to breast cancer research after a woman we work with was recently diagnosed and based on the history of breast cancer in my family,” explained Vis. The group chose the Community Ca ncer Resea rch Fou ndat ion i n Mu n ster for t hei r contribution. The Community Cancer Research Foundation works to advance the detection, diagnosis, treatment, education and prevention of cancer. Through the Foundation’s efforts, residents have access to clinical research trials from around the globe, close to home in their own neighborhood. “Thanks to Midwest Insurance and the many other groups who make generous donations to the Foundation, we are able to help ensure that people in our community can stay close to home and access the latest advances in cancer research,” said Mary Shields, RN, MSN, OCN, CCRP, Foundation administrator. Community Cancer Research Foundation links patients with research sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and other major research cooperatives worldwide. The three

my travels I’ve learned to discern God’s direction, experience His heart for people, to see and love others as He does, and be a part of His plan in meeting needs and leading many to faith in Him. I have also felt God’s heart for me through personal crisis----breast cancer, family conflicts, long term unemployment, failures, sin, and His forgiveness. It is i n my cu r rent jou r ney t hat I’ve come to realize the place God is leading me to. It is the same place He led Abraham to; a place of relationship with Him. Jesus has made it possible (through His life, death and resurrection) for each of us to experience a personal relationship with God. What must one do to experience this connection with the Almighty? A-admit your need for a Savior; B-believe that Jesus is the Savior, and C-commit yourself to Christ, allowing Him to be Lord over your life. Also, join a Bible Study and begin fellowshipping w it h ot her C h r ist ia ns w ho have surrendered their lives to the Lord. It will help you learn to discern His voice and His ways. One way we recognize God’s presence is w ith us is when we find ourselves walking in the shoes of those who’ve gone before us; and in the heroes of faith we read about in the scriptures. W hen the thought came to me to leave the church my mother brought me up in and go to a place that would be showed to me, I assumed I had been studying too much. “Okay Anna, pull yourself together,” I said to myself. “That command was to Abraham to leave his father’s house, a place of idolatry. Your mother’s church is not a place of idolatry; it’s a place of worship. You’re active in several areas of ministry, surely God isn’t telling you to pack up and leave.” H o w e v e r, f o l l o w i n g a S u n d a y afternoon ser vice, one of the church mothers approached me and said, “Baby, God’s got a great work for you to do but you’ve got to leave this place and go where you can be trained.” Leave, I thought to myself, Is God really telling me to leave? Where would I go? How will I know when I’m at the place where He wants me to be? A f ter severa l weeks of pondering and prayer I packed up and began my journey of faith. Since Abraham went south, I traveled south listening, looking and trusting God to lead me to the place He wanted me to go. In the process of

ICCTA Presents Service Award to Tony DeFilippo Last Thursday, Mike Monaghan, Executive Director of the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA), attended the South Suburban College (SSC) Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees to acknowledge a distinction of service with a “very special award,” according to Monaghan. Monaghan presented an ICCTA Service Award to SSC Trustee Tony DeFilippo. Monaghan addressed the Board of Trustees and gathered audience during the open meeting: “The ICCTA would like to recognize Tony DeFilippo for his 25 years of dedicated service as a Trustee of South Suburban College, Community College District 510. We are not only recognizing Trustee DeFilippo’s length of tenure, but also the quality of the years he has served our statewide system.” Monaghan added, “Tony was 1 of 46 first time, newly elected trustees in 1990 and is 1 of only 2 of those 46 who are still serving the statewide system.” Furthermore, since 1965, there have been more than 2,200 trustees elected, and only 23 are still serving with 25 or more years of service—Tony is in that top 1% along with your board chair Frank Zuccarelli.” Trustee DeFilippo, a Ca lumet Cit y resident, works as a registered pharmacist and is responsible for the advancement of medica l education and clinica l tria l For sale: Collectable bar neon sign, old style guitar. opportunities at academic and medical centers. He serves in this capacity throughout the country. On the board
level, DeFilippo serves as the SSC’s finance chair, a role he has filled for nearly his entire tenure while the college has collected 24 consecutive COE awards for excellence in financial reporting from the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO). The COE (Certificate of Excellence) is one of the highest recognitions a college can receive for their audited financial statements, confirming the school’s commitment to financial accountability and transparency. “I would like to thank the ICCTA for this special honor and especially Mike Monaghan for taking the time to come to South Holland to present this award to me tonight,” said DeFilippo upon receiving the award. “I’m truly honored, but this isn’t about one person—this is an award that recognizes everyone in this room and all those over the years who dedicated themselves to this college, our students and our mission.” Established in 1927, South Suburban College is a fully accredited, comprehensive community college with a diverse annual student population of more than 16,000. MIKE BUDER There are 2 statements that I sometimes hear on listing appointments that send a clear message that some prospective sellers ju st don’t u nder st a nd today’s market. Let’s deal with the first statement: “I DON’T HAVE TO SELL”… t hen why did you have me wa ste ha l f my day putting together a listing presentation, pulling and a na l y z i ng c ompa r a ble sales and wrapping a tie around my neck to find out that you don’t actually have a problem t hat I can help you solve. Also, if you didn’t have to sell this propert y why have you had it on the market with 3 other real estate companies over the last 20 months? If you don’t have to sell then don’t put it on the market! A ll you are accomplishing is adding to the supply problem and driving down prices for sellers that do need to sell. And the second statement: “W E DON’T WA N T TO GIV E IT AWAY”…I don’t w a nt t o g i v e it a w a y either! But the market is what the market is. If you think we are going to find someone t hat drops in t he neighborhood from outer space that is willing to pay you more t ha n market value you have a looooooooong wait ahead of you. Rea ltors have a very aggressive marketing plan and we do everything we can to bring as many buyers to see your home as possible. However, our plan has one flaw…it only
exposes your property to those prospective buyers in the general vicinity of PL A N ET E A RT H ! Even Donald Trump can’t sell a property for more than ma rket va lue ! In ot her words, if you have to sell your property I promise you it w ill only sell for what the current market will bring. You will most likely not get what your neighbor got for his home when he sold back in 2006. Even if a buyer wants to pay more for the property than its current market value, the appraisal will not support the price for t hem to get f ina ncing. Ca sh buyers today a re even making offers subject to appraised value. There are no guarantees what the market will bring in the next few years. But one thing will stay consistent. O n l y s old a nd c lo s e d properties in your local ma rket w i l l deter m i ne your current market value. If you are looking to buy or sel l rea l estate ca ll Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-ma i l : m i kebuder @ r em a x . ne t , Web s it e : w w w.BuderHomes. com or Facebook Friend request Mike Buder: your c om ment s a r e a l w a y s welcome. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I live in Illinois and I knew real estate prices in my area dropped, but I was shocked when a Realtor told me how much my home was really worth in this market. Should I wait for the market to boom again?

Answer: Time marches on, not backward. Waiting for real estate prices to return to pre-recession levels before you put your home on the market, means you don’t understand that time only goes forward. For ward from here, there are no real estate booms immediately on the horizon. Yes, we’ll see booms again, but wait for the next one, and you’ll end up financially behind all those that keep their money mov i ng a nd mu lt iply i ng i n today ’s markets. This waiting loss is compounded by the fact that every passing year makes your house one year older. That’s “older” in ever y way f rom dated decor a nd appliances to out-of-date plumbing and everything else. This means that, when real estate prices increase, your home will be discounted by the renovation factor the perceived cost of bringing the house up to current standards. If your resale home does not look “nearly brand-new,” buyers see second-hand real estate which warrants a second-rate purchase price.

Look at the whole picture: As a Seller, you can gain in the long run if you buy a home in a locat ion where ma rket values have dropped, just like they have in your current area. It can give you the opportunity to buy your dream home at a big sav ings. Here’s why: Say the market value has dropped 30% in your area, and 30% in the area where you can buy a larger, more modern home with everything you want, then since your new home is worth more than your current home, you are actually coming out ahead! The net gain from selling and buying is what should be considered, not just the profit from selling. Often the obvious gain in selling is to be free to take the next step in your life and to move to a new home, ready to start a lot more treasured memories. Financial Advice Column
Know the Impact of Retirement Goals on Your Finances BOB KRYGSHELD The concept of “retirement” has changed dramatically in recent decades. Today’s ret i rees a re t ravel i ng , volunteering, pursuing their hobbies — and even work ing for money. By clearly identif ying your r e t i r e m e nt g o a l s a nd estimating their financial i mpac t , y ou’l l k now how to stay “financially healthy” throughout your retirement years. S o, w h a t a r e y ou r retirement goals? Here are some of the more common ones: • Travel. Many people can’t wait to see the world once they retire. If you’re one of these eager travelers, you’ve got more choices than ever. However you decide to hit t he road, you’d better bring your wallet — because travel is expensive. One way of dealing with these costs is to place a certain amount of money each year in a liquid account that offers significant protection of principal. Set aside enough money to cover all your travels for a year, and when it’s exhausted, you’ll know it’s time to stay home for a while. • Rent or buy a second home. If you are c on s ider i n g a s e c ond home, y ou’ l l ne e d t o decide whether you want to rent or buy. You’ll find considerable differences f rom a f ina ncia l point of view, so you’ll want to think carefully about your choice. • Pursue your hobbies. Once you ret ire, you’l l
probably have a lot more time to do what you like, whet her t hat’s d r iv i ng your classic car, painting la ndscapes, golf ing, fishing, building furniture — whatever. Be aware, however, that some people do get over-exuberant and spend more money on their hobbies than they can really afford. So have fun with your pursuits, but set a budget — and stick to it. • Get back to work. Upon your formal retirement, you may decide to do some consulting or open a small business. Any wages you receive can greatly improve your retirement income picture. Plus, if you make enough money, you may be able to postpone Social Security for a few years, thereby increasing your monthly payments when you eventually start taking them. As you ca n see, you r ret i rement goa l s w i l l be closely t ied to your finances. So think carefully about what you’d like to do when you retire — a nd c on ne c t t he se objectives to the money y ou’ l l s p end a nd t he money you may earn. By being aware of both your dreams and your “bottom line,” you should be able to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Relay For Life In Calumet City
Local Teams participate in the Relay For Life.
SATURDAY JUNE 27, 2015: In what has become an annual event, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in the South Suburbs takes place in Calumet City at TF North High School's track and grounds. Rain or shine local residents, including Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush and her administration, have taken part in the 24 hour event. This year local cancer survivors and their caregivers will take the celebratory first lap at the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Calumet Area (includes Calumet City, Dolton, Lansing, South Holland and surrounding areas) event on Saturday June 27th, 2015 at TF North High School. The opening ceremony begins at 3 p.m. and the Survivors Lap will start at 3:30 p.m. and the Caregivers Lap will follow the survivors lap. Anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer may participate. As the survivors walk, other participants will cheer them on in a demonstration of support and celebration. The five year survival rate for all cancers has risen to 68 percent, and there are an estimated 14 million Americans alive today who have been diagnosed with the disease. After the opening festivities, there will be a Survivor and Caregiver dinner from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the TF North High School's cafeteria. The dinner is free but reservations are required. All survivors will receive a free survivor T-Shirt. Survivors are encouraged to bring their caregiver or one guest. Please contact Michelle Pruitt at michelle.pruitt@cancer.org by June 23rd to reserve your seat. The Relay for Life program is a community event where teams and individuals set up campsites at a school and take turns walking around the track. Each team has at least one participant on the track at all times. Four million people participated in more than 6000 events worldwide last year. The money raised supports groundbreaking cancer research, education and prevention programs, and critical services for people facing cancer. "We are so pleased to have this wonderful organization with us each year," Mayor Michelle noted recently. "With the help of the survivors and their caregivers and the participants around the world, hopefully we will conquer this disease once and for all!" If you are a cancer survivor or caregiver and would like to take part in the Relay for Life of Calumet Area, call Michelle Pruitt at the American Cancer Society at 708-633-7771 or email at michelle.pruitt@cancer.org For more information about the event, visit www.relayforlife.org/calumetil.

MACK BABIES, SISTER OLIVIA TAKE CENTER STAGE: Pictured at Lincoln’s Tasty Sandwiches in Highland, Indiana recently is the Mack Family of Lansing. Six month old twins Oliver and Owen are sleeping soundly in their traveling baby chairs while Big Sister Olivia, 4, observes. Olivia, who will start Kindergarten at St. Ann in the fall, a year ahead of the other kids, is a State Finalist in the National Little Miss America Pageant in August in St. Charles, Il She hopes for the coveted crown which will take her further on the tiny miss beauty circuit. Mom Kandace, and Dad, Ron are so proud of their beautiful and talented offspring. Can Hollywood be far behind? Good Luck Olivia in the State Finals! ***
JUDY DOMINIAK CELEBRATES HER BIRTHDAY: Judy, also known playfully as “Sarge” is pictured in the company of hubby Rich and Jim Gigliotti last Saturday evening just before the Blackhawks played in the championship. Judy’s nickname is “Sarge” because her hubby along with Larry Grzywinski and other veterans founded the Lansing Veteran’s Memorial Ceremonial Honor Guard 23 years ago. Since Rich and company regularly wear their ceremonial Army garb and Judy is almost always present for the events, Rich dubbed her their honorary “Sergeant.” The group was dining at John’s Restaurant on Ridge Road in Munster following a sold out performance by local Tom Dreesen (more on that below) and ran into Blackhawks fan Jimmy G whose daughter works at the restaurant. And, it must be noted that the restaurant’s air conditioning went out that night. But, server Brian was a real champ in the way he took care of our large group! Thanks Brian! And Happy, Happy Birthday Judy from the group! ***
TOM DREESEN IN FINE FORM WITH ‘MEMORIES OF SINATRA’ AT MUNSTER CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS: In sold out performances on June 12 and 13, the Harvey born comedian keep the audience in stitches for all of the almost 90 minute performance. He did with out a break and only a few sips of water until the very last, when he gave us Sinatra’s final toast, a sip of Jack Daniel’s and his wish for us, “The Best is Yet to Come.” In between the opening, a video of his rag tag start as one of 8 kids living in poverty in Harvey, to the present where he is the pal of every notable in old Hollywood, Dreesen enthralled us with
Sinatra stories right up to his final days, confined to his home in California, but still wanting his ‘pallies’ around him. What is most amazing about Dreesen’s climb to the top is that he never forgot his humble beginnings, his parents, his siblings and those who helped him get to where he is today. He credits Johnny Carson and Frank Sinatra for the most help with Sammy Davis Jr. along the way as vital to his success. Dreesen’s visit with us was warm, charming and as close to a one on one as you can get with an audience of 500. So popular are his stories of Sinatra that he travels around the country with his one man act, and when not performing he is active on the charity circuit. :Pictured here are some of my East Side school chums who were at the show: Sue Rosenbaum Wisniewski, myself, Janice Triller Minton-Kutz, Diane Andry Batnick, Marilyn Zeffero Spisak and Pat Peters Starcevich. In another photo are a group of Veterans’ and their wives from the LCMHG around Dreesen’s photo following his performance. They are from left, yours truly, Cathy Grzywinski, Larry Grzywinski, Rich Dominiak, Claudia Paolone and Paul Balcerak. The star was absolutely mobbed by fans following the performance so we all decided to group around his smiling photo instead. His show is absolutely the GREATEST! Thanks Tom Dreesen! ***
NUPTIALS ARE PLANNED WITH A JURASSIC PARK THEME: But, first the wedding shower, held at Gatto’s Italian Restaurant in Orland Park (just adjacent to the Rivera Country Club) where the bride received fabulous gifts. Pictured here, are from left David Hauptman, Laurie Montague, Lauren Hauptman, Diane Hauptman and Heather Hauptman. Locals remember David and his Dad, Otto Hauptman as the longtime jewelers on Chicago’s East Side. David now has a shop in Lemont where he has a specialty in hand crafted wedding rings and his own brand of Hauptman Swiss watches. The wedding will be held in August at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and all the stops are out for a splendid affair!. And, as N 2 N is always in favor of Love and Marriage--Long May They Love! *** S TAT E S T R E E T P L AY E R S T O PRODUCEW NEIL SIMON’S PL AY ‘FOOLS’ FOR RESTRATION MINISTRIES: The State Street Players, a group of actors from South Holland and Northwest Indiana are putting o n a performance of the Neil Simon play “Fools,” to benefit Restoration Ministries’ Gallery of the Arts. The Gallery of the Arts is a high Quality visual and performing arts education center for underserved youth in the south suburbs. The play will be held on Saturday June 27th 2015 at 7 p.m. at Fellowship Hall, 16350 S. state Street, South Holland. General Admission tickets are $15 and VIP tickets are $25. Open Auditions for “Play On!” at South Suburban College The PAC Rats Theatre Company of South Suburban College will hold open auditions for the hilarious Rick Abbot comedy, Play On! The auditions will take place on July 8th and 9th beginning at 7:00 p.m. Readings will be held in the Kindig Performing Arts Center on the college’s Main Campus at 15800 S. State Street in South Holland, IL. A m ateu r d r a m at ic s t a ke s a goodnatured ribbing in this behind-the-scenes comedy about the perils of communit y theatre. A theatre troupe is mounting of a local playwright’s original murder mystery. With no royalty fees to pay, the company thinks it got a great deal until the playwright continues to interrupt the rehearsal process with constant rewrites and changes. To add to the problems, the cast and crew are starting to get on each other’s nerves. Act I is a rehearsal of the dreadful show with bicker i ng ac tor s, bu mbl i ng crew a nd backstage romances in full swing; Act II is the near disastrous dress rehearsal, and the final act is opening night where anything that can go wrong does. Director Catherine Hundt of Thornton, will cast 10 ensemble actors of all colors
