The Westminster Church Men’s Bible Study had their final study last week. There were 21 men present. They meet every Wednesday morning from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at Westminster Church in Munster. This past year they studied the many highlights of Our Lord and his compassion, mercy, love and kindness to all the people He encountered while He was here on earth. Our study guide book was by an author named Mr. Borg. The study group will resume in September. We all enjoy the fun fellowship and delicious food every week.

Dr. Michael McDermott D.P.M.

Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. If you have any questions concerning athlete’s feet or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

KEVIN BRADLEY Diego G on za les is a n i n novator who is continuously evaluating and evolving his business. Most recently, re-branding with the name Airbrush Monsters to better illustrate the business’s nature, and moving the lo c at ion f r om a G a r y Flea Market to Westfield Southlake Mall. Airbrush Monsters is located on the first floor By the Sears entrance near Zumiez and Charlotte Russe. Diego feels that Airbrush monsters would not be the success it is today had he not spent the time in the trenches learning valuable lessons about running a business along the way. He went from a low rent location which offered him a lot of f lexibility to a higher rent locat ion where e x p e c t at ion s a r e a l s o higher. He says, “Number one i n my busi ness is customer service. Number one in my business is also the quality of the product I pr ov ide . T ho s e t w o aspects together are what keep customers coming back a nd keep t hem talking about us to their friends. I cannot afford to let one of those aspects suf fer. Sma l l successes add up to great successes.” “I d ress to i mpress in order to be seen in a d i f ferent l ig ht. It a lso brings different projects into the works for us.” As a business owner and an artist, Diego pretty much had carte blanche to dress for work as he pleases. However, he is there every day wearing dress shirt and tie. He firmly believes that simple attribute will set him apart from t he pack, making him more appealing to do business with for the general public.

When people are dealing with a business, they want to dea l w it h someone who look s a nd acts professionally. That alone w i l l ma ke a good f i rst impression of a business, and Diego knows that he is a direct reflection of his business. He is also happy as a child with a new toy b e c au s e, “I a m doi ng something I always said I wanted to do.” It can take long hours to build a business. Air Br u sh Mon ster s i s no except ion. Diego is on locat ion w henever t he ma l l is open (Mon-Sat 10-9, Sun 11-6), and also spend s t i me f u l f i l l i ng inter net orders a nd working on other projects. He must a lso orga n i ze paperwork and schedule employees when he is not creating works of art. ARLO KALLEMEYN If you wa nt to bi ke a long L a ke M ich iga n this summer you have a couple of choices. You can put your own bike in your trunk and find a good bike trail. If that sounds like too much work, there is a neat bike rental program in Chicago. Divvy is a bike sharing system featuring t hou sa nd s of bi ke s at hu nd red s of st at ion s f rom A nder sonv i l le to Hyde Park, available 24/7, 365 day s a yea r. Each station has a touchscreen kiosk, station map, and a dock i ng system t hat relea ses bi kes u si ng a member key or ride code. We bought a 24-Hour pass last Thursday and biked from the new 31st St reet ma r i na to Nav y Pier. The 24 hour pass is just $7, which is a bargain in Chicago - but there is important fine print. You have to find another Divvy bike rack before a certain a mount of t ime passes and check in. Checking in means you dock the Divvy bike into the special bike rack and stop the clock for that portion of your ride. If you go over 30 minutes, the overtime clock starts ticking - and your $7 can turn into a bit more. We combined our bike ride w ith something similar to The Amazing Race. We wanted to check into the next Divvy station before our credit card was hit w it h extra cha rges. We weren’t sure where t he

other Divvy stations were, but found another station at the Planetarium with just 2 minutes to spare. After that we decided to play it a little safer and a r r ived at t he Mon roe Harbor station with about 5 minutes to spare. After t hat it wa s a shor t 20 minute ride to Navy Pier – we were getting the hang of it. Once you dock the Divvy, you can relax and enjoy the Navy Pier sights and sounds. Bikes may be rented from any Div v y station kiosk and require a credit or debit card. Once you purchase a Pass, you’ll be provided with a ride code that is used to unlock a bicycle and begin a ride trip. Ride codes are good for on ly one t r ip. For subs e quent t r ips, you must sw ipe your credit or debit card at the kiosk aga in to receive a new code. It’s kind of fun to c om bi ne t he C h ic a g o sk yline, La ke Michigan and a bike ride that has some excitement built in. Here is t he cost schedule – remember to read the fine print! 0–30 minutes of each trip INCLUDED with your $7 initial charge. 30–60 minutes $2.00 60–90 minutes $6.00 Each addit iona l 30 minutes +$8.00

Fate has given these thespians one more shot at starring roles in The Scarlet Pimpernel epic and director Frank Capra himself is en route to Buffalo to catch their matinee performance. De Gra f f a nd members of t he Board of Trustees approved an ordinance expanding the Sunday hours of operation for retail food and automotive businesses that serve the motoring public. The amendment removes the 11:00 a.m. provision from the Sunday closing ordinance to accommodate retail businesses that primarily sell food, med ici ne, a nd prov ide automot ive maintenance and repair services. “The Board will always be responsive to the input of our residents and businesses, and if needed, change what we do,” said Village President Don De Graff. “The key is that we may change how we do certain things, but we will not change who we are. We will always be a community of strong values of faith, family and future.”

Previously, retail food and automotiverelated businesses could open on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. This change allows these businesses to maximize their response to the needs of the community and the traveling public. “Bu si nesses play a cr it ic a l role i n increasing the va lue of our homes and improving our quality of life. They are impor ta nt for mov ing us prog ressively for wa rd, to not on ly ma i nta i n, but to continually strengthen the economic vitality of South Holland,” said Village President De Graff. “I am very grateful for the businesses that serve the community, and this will f urt her enhance t heir opportunities to serve our residents and guests. I strongly encou r age a l l of ou r resident s to be intentional about patronizing our South Holland businesses.”

What Are You Thirsty For? ANNA M. CAISON

L a st yea r I at tended my g ra nddaughter’s graduation from Christian Fenger High School in Chicago. The class of 2013 was t he school’s 100t h Commencement Ceremony. Initially I was frightened at learning that my granddaughter would be attending Fenger because of the violence within the school and the surrounding community. But since Principal Elizabeth Dozier’s arrival in 2009, the school has made a dramatic turnaround. Violence and arrests at the school has dropped “from 850 in 2010 to a little over 200 in 2012. This year there has been less than a dozen arrests.” (Don Babw in A P-3//2013) Principa l Dozier and her team proved that given the right resources and tools the school could influence a positive change in the direction and future of its students. The commencement speaker, Dean of St udents, Dona ld Gordon, chose for his topic “Thirsty for Success.” His challenging question was, “What are you thirsty for?” To illustrate his point he told of his determination to succeed at a university that told him he couldn’t make it there because he wasn’t smart enough. But because he had a thirst to succeed he pressed forward, overcoming obstacles and nay Sayers and earned his degree. As the speaker closed his message I

pictured the Prophet Isaiah calling out to those who were thirsty to come to the waters and drink free of charge. Jesus fulfilled the prophet’s call when He said “anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Everyone who puts their trust in Me, out of their heart will flow rivers of life sustaining water. “ Many give up on living the Christian life and experiencing God because it’s too hard. You can’t do this and you can’t do that. You’ve got to be forgiving, patient and love people who don’t love you, and mistreat you. And the thought of spending eternity with God in heaven seems vague, unreachable and worse, may not even be worth the struggle. The Christian life at times does seem hard, even unbearable; mainly because we are being changed into the image of Christ. That’s hard work! But if we continue to persevere, and maintain our thirst to know Jesus and to live for Him, the Christian walk gets easier. And on graduation day, when the angel sounds the trumpet, we will have received the prize. For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Thought My Loan Approval Was Good Until I Found A House DONNA HOLMER

I was approved for a mortgage in December and just found a house that I want to buy. I called my lender to check on rates and they told me that my loan approval expired? Is this common or just specific to my broker? Julie – Munster

You are not a lone, Julie. Lending guidelines state that loan commitments are valid for a maximum of 120 days and in some cases less. Let’s think about this for a minute . . . you apply for a loan in December but don’t purchase a home until May. You could have had a job change, had a couple of late payments that affected your credit score, you could have less money in your accounts than you did at the time of application or the lending guidelines could have changed from the time you applied for your loan. You will need to provide your lender with updated pay stubs, bank statements and recent tax returns. Your lender will need to order an updated credit report to be sure you meet t heir minimum

credit score requirement. The loan will be underwritten as if it were a new loan . . . and you will be issued a new loan commitment if everything is as good or better than when you initially applied for your loan. Hopefully your lender explained that during the loan process you should not add any additional debt, change jobs, and/ or deplete your bank accounts. Should any of these factors change, your loan approval could be in jeopardy. Julie, your next step is to provide your lender the necessary paperwork to update your loan commitment. This time, you can also provide the purchase agreement on your new home! Congratulations! How you can heal your broken neighborhood ARTHUR V. VEAL IV The last few years have had a drastic effect on the south suburbs and housing all over the area. I’m not talking about the decline of proper t y va lues. I’m actually speaking about the decline of the areas. Foreclosures have had a ver y negat ive ef fect on neig hborhood s leav i ng empty houses and uncut grass. These empt y houses also attract vandals and metal thieves that rip the insides out of the homes. Even when the houses are purchased by investors they are often filled with tenants that may be on subsid i z e d hou si ng or families that have never rented a home before. These families can add to the stress of a community because their values may be dif ferent. They may look at t heir place as a temporary place and not be committed to the area. While you in turn are there for the long haul and want to keep your area healthy. So how can you help to heal your community and area? My suggest ion is simple but effective. You need to lead by example and you need to extend a hand of friendship to new neig h b or s, le a d i n g b y example means keeping your property maintained and in some cases offering to help your new neighbor maintain their yard. Many apartment dwellers have

not had to ma i nta i n a home a nd may not be familiar w ith all that is involved. So show them by maintains your yard and be friendly when you see them. Tenants may not have a lw ay s had neig hborly neighbors so they may not be as outgoing to connect. If they are not, then you s t a r t t he pr o c e s s a nd i nt roduce you rsel f. Let your new neighbors see that their neighborhood looks out for each other. By teaching new neig hbors to be bet ter neighbors you help you rsel f by bu i ld i ng a quality relationship and you r neig hbor is more likely to stay in the home and they know have more reason to keep up their new home because they know the neighbors. This little technique can have a drastic effect on your neighborhood in a short time. Give it a try. Unt i l nex t we ek ... Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES Just about every other day, I head out on a milk run for my son. That is, a chocolate milk run to Wa lt’s Foods. He goes t h roug h a ga l lon so fast. So when I read A l DiC ic c o’s W W I I note s a b out a ‘m i l k r u n,’ I t houg ht, “I ca n tota l ly relate.” Until I realized he wasn’t talking about milk. Appraisal Issues MIKE BUDER In the South Suburbs of Chicago as well as many other parts of the country t he lender ’s appr a i s a l becomes the litmus test to t he price negotiated between the buyer and the seller. Fair market price is normally determined when a seller and a buyer who aren’t under duress negotiate and agree on a contract price for the sale of a property. If the buyer is cash and doesn’t need a lender then that’s it. In most cases, an appraisal isn’t done at this point, because t he buyer a nd seller agree on the value of t he propert y. If t he buyer does need a lender, a s mo s t do, t hen t he bank has to have a way to document the market va lue. T h a t ’s w h e r e t he appra isa l comes in. An appraisal is one person’s opinion of what a mortgage lender should be prepared to lend on a particular property, based on the recent histor y of sales of similar properties. W hat ca n you do i f you have a n appra isa l issue? 1. The Realtor can prepare and file an appeal through the lender. That means the parties submit add it iona l i n for mat ion a nd r e q u e s t t h a t t h e appraiser reconsider the va lue. Appra isers a re human too and sometimes miss somet hing or make a mistake just like ever yone else. 2. The buyer and the seller can agree to reduce the sale pr ice to t he appra ised value. 3. The buyer can

elect to come up w it h additional down payment and pay the difference at the closing table. 4. The buyer can walk away from t he dea l a nd get t hei r earnest money back. The contract should have an appra isa l cont i ngenc y, and if the buyer is getting an FHA or VA loan, that appr a i s a l c ont i ngenc y covers the buyer all the way to closing regardless of any other terms in the cont ract. If t he house d o e s n’t a ppr a i s e , t h e buyer gets their earnest money back. But t hey st i l l lose t he money t he y have i nve ste d i n inspections and the cost of the appraisal itself. In conclusion, the best way to ha nd le a n appra isa l issue is to avoid one! Both buyers and sellers should work w it h ex per ienced Re a ltor s. LINCOLN’S RESTAURANT PLANS REMODELING OVER JULY 4TH: If you are a regular at the popular Lincoln’s Restaurant on Highway Avenue in ‘old’ Highland, please be advised that owner Helen Stasinos and her sister Bonnie “Bunny” Bikos will be taking a little holiday from July 3rd (half day) through July 10th for visiting with relatives and supervising the remodeling for the front of the store where the awning came down recently after a bad storm. Pictured here are Helen, Bunny, Lilly and the girls who work there. Lincoln’s has a long and colorful history starting out in Chester, Pennsylvania where Dad George and Mom Catherine were from, on to Gary, Indiana, East Chicago, Calumet City and now back to Indiana in Highland. Of the 2 most popular restaurants in Gary some years back, only Lincoln’s and Round the Clock are still in service. Lincoln’s just celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary in 2013. The Stasinos’ sisters (minus one, Carol died some years ago and is still sorely missed) attended Horace Mann High School in Gary and the alumnus regularly have their meetings at Lincoln’s. There is lots more....but I will save that for another N 2 N! Oh here’s a teaser, the girl’s Dad owned 10 movie houses in Gary at one time! They have pix of him with many stars of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. ***

DISPOSING OF AN AMERICAN FL AG RESPECTFULLY: That was the object of a brief gathering at the Lansing Veteran’s Memorial recently. Pictured here are Rich Dominiak, Larry Grzywinski, Michael Sanow and Claudia Paolone in the Ford Hangar where the event was held. Rich and Larry are among the architects of the Lansing Memorial Ceremonial Honor Guard at the Lansing Airport, Burnham and Glenwood Dyer Road. Claudia’s husband, the late Ernie Paolone was also one of the founders of the organization. The men all served combat times in Vietnam. Mike Sanow is on active duty. The box of flags was donated by my husband Larry Kutz, also a military veteran. The flags must be treated respectfully and when too tattered or soiled to fly, are usually disposed of by burning them so they are never used for any purposed but to celebrate America. ***

All the Walts stores offered the special and it drew a crowd as one might imagine. Pictured here are members of the Kramer and Cannelus families enjoying the sunshine and picnic lunch at the flagship store, the Walt’s in South Holland. With all the grocery stores around, Walt’s is still the winner hands down! *** CALUMET CITY FOP LODGE 1 TO HOST GOLF OUTING: We are all invited to join the CC FOP Lodge 1 on Friday August 29th, 2014 for it’s annual golf outing at Lincoln Oaks Course in Crete, Il. CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF SANDI TALAGA: Sandra L. Sandi Rose Talaga passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 18th. Locals remember Sandi as the church organist for St. Jude the Apostle in South Holland where she lived for many years, St. Maria Goretti and Our Lady of Consolation. Sandi leaves behind her beloved husband John, and her children Keith, Michelle and Greg and 8 grandchildren. Looking no where near her age, the bright and vivacious Sandi will be remembered for her smile and her kindness and her generous spirit. She and her sweetheart John J. Talaga were married 56 years. Sandi will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her! May She Rest in Peace. *** For inclusion in Neighbor 2 Neighbor, please call Janice at 708-302-8585 or write to her C/O Coldwell Banker, 20 E.
