Calumet City Man Sentenced In Double Murder A Ca lumet Cit y ma n has been sentenced to t wo consecutive natural life sentences for the murder of two men who were shot to death outside a bar in the south suburb, according to the Office of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez. Jeremy Rodriguez, 29, was previously convicted by a jury on two counts of First Degree Murder for the shooting deaths of Michael Johnson, 24, and Edward White, 22, both of Chicago. According to prosecutors, Rodriguez was part of a group of patrons who were exiting the Calumet City bar in the early morning hours of May 20, 2009 when the murders occurred. The group was gathering near the front entrance of the building in the 400 block of Torrence Avenue when Rodriguez began talking aggressively. According to prosecutors, Johnson, who was the lounge manager, exited the building and asked the group to leave the area. Rodriguez pulled out a handgun and shot Johnson in the chest and then fired the gun again, striking White in the back. Rodriguez fled the scene but was arrested a short time later. Rodriguez appeared at a hearing today at the Cook Count y Courthouse in Mark ham before Judge Frank Zelezinski who imposed the consecutive natural life sentences. State’s Attorney A lvarez thanked Assistant State’s Attorneys Cheryl Schroeder and Joseph Kosman as well as the Calumet City Police Department and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force for their work on this case.

with Him. Just as my grandmother’s and mother’s faith in God nurtured in me a faith in God through their experiences; God is also nurturing faith in my siblings, children, and grandchildren through my experiences with Him. As I write this, I’m reminded of other heroes of faith with shared experiences similar to that of Abraham and Isaac. Elijah and Elisha. Elisha was Elijah’s protégé. God proved He was with Elisha as He was with Elijah through similar experiences. The same with Moses and Joshua. Joshua was Moses’ protégé. God appeared to Joshua as He did to Moses. He appeared to Moses in a burning bush and to Joshua as a warrior. But the call was the same, “Take off your shoes for the place where you stand is holy ground.” W hose shoes have you found yourself wa lk ing in? Could it be t hat God is reaching out to you, to initiate friendship with you? For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net. Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Sometimes the only way we know God is with us is when we find ourselves walking in the shoes of those who’ve gone before us. The first time I wrote on this subject I told how my daughter developed a personal faith in God when she found herself walking in my shoes, when she made the decision to move to New York to reunite with her estranged husband. I’ve come to realize that “walking in the shoes of those who’ve gone before us” is not confined to just children following parents. It also includes siblings following siblings. On December 28 t h I received t his text from my baby sister. “We rea lly a r e b o ok end s, a r en’t w e…. olde s t g i r l /y ou n ge s t g i r l ; t w o d au g ht e r s most l i ke mom ma ; ident ica l brea st cancer sur v ivors; faced w it h s a me w or k c h a l le n ge. T h i n k G o d is t r y i ng to tel l us somet h i ng ? ” Yes ! God is establishing a pattern of His Presence and His Faithfulness to our family that He is with us! He is preserving Him a present day circle of witnesses to encourage us in our walk

Helped Griffith Client

WOODROW WILCOX Twice in June I helped a cl ient f rom Gr i f f it h, I nd ia na . She received a bill that had a balance due. She wanted to know why because she has both Medicare and a Medicare supplement i nsu ra nce polic y t hroug h our insurance agency. The first papers that she brought to my office did not give a complete story of the bill from a local hospital. So, on June 9, I w rote a letter to t he hospital asking for more c omplete i n for m at ion about the bill. On June 23, our client brought the hospital’s response. I compared the more detailed bill to the bill t h at w a s s ent t o ou r client previously, to the Med ica re Su m ma r y Not ice t hat ou r cl ient received from Medicare, and to the Explanation of Benefits from the client’s Me d ic a r e s upplement i n su ra nce compa ny. I found the problem. T he hospit a l fa i led to f i le t he cla i m w it h Med ica re w it h a l l t he services that it listed on the bill to the client. That threw the math about the claim “off”. Here is part of

the letter that I sent to the hospital. O u r s en ior c it i z en client should not be forced to pay one penny more than the proper and legal amount of any balance, if any exists, just because some one el se made a m i s t a k e. Ple a s e, t a k e steps to either drop this balance sought or refile the claim correctly for an adjustment to the figures. The help that I gave to this senior citizen client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insura nce agency “goes the extra mile” for our senior citizen clients. D o e s y ou r i n s u r a n c e agent or agency give this high level of ser v ice to senior citizens? If not, why not?

District 205 Moves To SAT as the Preferred College Entrance Exam

Thornton Township High School District 205 is honored to partner with The College Board for an exciting change in college readiness testing. District 205 is committed to challenging students to rise to a high level of academic excellence - as well as be able to compete in a 21st century global economy. The College Board’s College Readiness and Success System supports the mission of District 205to prepare students for a world that is increasingly diverse and knowledge driven. This system delivers a comprehensive solution for District 205 students. The PSAT will be used as District 205’s High School courses placement exam for incoming freshmen. This will enable our teachers to understand each individual students needs. The PSAT supports college readiness and success with a clear focus on the skills and knowledge that matter most. The PSAT will provide our educators with an early opportunity to get our students on the right track for success. These include: • Set a baseline for student readiness • Measure and monitor student performance • Pinpoint areas for improvement The next step in the College Readiness and Success System is the PSAT/NMSQT. This test is a preliminary version of the SAT. This national assessment puts students on the path to college with SAT practice, skills feedback, scholarship opportunities, and college and career planning tools. The PSAT/NMSQT helps students prepare for the SAT. Students will be able to enter scholarship and recognition programs, plan for college and the workplace, and receive information from colleges. District 205 students have enjoyed generous scholarship offers in the past and these tools will continue our success! Each student that participates in the SAT suite of assessments has an individualized Score Report Plus via upload through the popular Khan Academy. This includes a customized SAT study plan and personalized focus practice for students. In addition, students will have access to personalized lists of colleges, majors, and careers and access to Road Trip Nation —the College Board’s partner to bring online majors, college, and career exploration program. Through a series of workshops and meetings, District 205 staff is committed to providing support to our students to promote the systematic use of the PSAT/NMSQT’s Summary of Answers and Skills. The Summary of Answers and Skills data provides information on skills covered in each section of the PSAT, also showing how students’ skills compare to national and state performance on each skill assessed by the test. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Brett Fickes , Director of Curriculum and Instruction, at 708-259-6833.

ARLO KALLEMEYN vegetables? Back in the day there was money on t he line depending on which side t he tomato was placed. In 1893, the Por t Aut hor it y of New York classified tomatoes as vegetables - which at the time were subject to a 10 percent import tax. A fruit importer argued that tomatoes were fruits, which were not ta xed. In t he Supreme Cou r t de c i sion, t he ju st ic e s dist ing uished bet ween science and everyday life. T he ju st ices ad m it ted that botanically speaking, tomatoes were technically fruits. But in everyday life, they decided, vegetables w e r e t h i n g s “u s u a l l y ser ved at d i n ner i n, with, or after the soup, f i sh, or meat s ... a nd not, like fruits generally, a s de s ser t .” So u nder customs law, the court ruled, tomatoes counted as vegetables — and the i mpor ter had to keep paying the tax. Thankfully, we pay a lower sales ta x on food in this area. So get out to your favorite grocery store or fa rmsta nd a nd pick up some garden grow n tomatoes. As with all good things in life - they won’t last forever. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of the garden tomato.

The taste of the summertime tomato is so much better than wintertime tomato that y ou c a n h a r d l y e v e n compare the two. Even t houg h t he tomato i s technica l ly a f r uit, we t reat it as a vegetable. How to tell whether it is a fruit or vegetable? The big quest ion to ask is, DOES IT H AV E SEEDS? If the answer is yes, then technically, (botanically) you have a FRUIT. This, of cou rse, ma kes you r tomato a f r u it. It a lso makes cucumbers, squash, green beans and pumpk ins a l l f r uits as well. Please don’t include tomatoes in your f r uit s a l a d s t h i s s u m m e r. Tomatoes belong on BLT sandwiches and Caprese salads with thick sliced mozza rella cheese a nd basil leaves. Some like t hei r tom ato e s s l ic e d plain with a shaker of salt on the side. Jimmy Buffet even sang a song about losing his shaker of salt. In the 19th century, the U.S. Supreme Court faced t he a ge-old que st ion : A re tomatoes f r uits or

Musical Theatre: The House of Mirrors & Hearts The Towle Theater continues its 13th season with the US Premiere musical The House of Mirrors & Hearts by Eamonn O’Dwyer and Rob Gilbert with generous support from Purdue University Northwest and additional support from John F. Pelkey, Attorney at Law. This musical is under the direction of Jeff Casey, Managing Director of the Towle Theater. Musical Direction is by Elizabeth Tuazon. The House of Mirrors & Hearts had its world premiere in London at the Arcola Theatre in July of 2015. After the show closed, the Towle Theater was granted the rights for the production making it the second production ever and the US Premiere. The writers have been very helpful via email in tweaking the show for the Towle’s production and Eamonn O’Dwyer will be flying in from London to see the show on July 21. There will be a talk back Q & A following the performance that evening with the writer, cast and production team. When Anna’s husband is killed in a tragic accident at their home, her family’s life is changed forever. Seven years pass, and, torn apart by grief, Anna has drunk herself numb. Her daughters, Lily and Laura, exist in a world of secrets and lies. They spend their days in bitter silence and suspicion until Nathan, a new lodger studying the works of a forgotten poet, forces them to confront their past. Strategic Default = Bad Strategy

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I’m 26 years old and looking to invest in real estate. Now seems like the time to invest considering current market conditions. My main goal is to start with one property and work my way up to own several. Capita l is a l it t le t ig ht, however everything else is in good order. As a firsttime buyer what type of house would you recommend? (single family, duplex, owner occupied duplex, condo,) W hat about foreclosures? Would foreclosures be too intricate for first property? Also what type of loan would be a good option? Interest-on ly is appea ling because I don’t pla n on hold i ng t he proper t y for long term. I want to maximize cash flow and appreciation as does everyone. Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated. Answer: Interest-only mortgages are precisely the t y pe of tox ic financing forcing so many people into foreclosure today, a mortgage to be avoided. Why? You don’t know that you’ll be able to sell in a few years, or at what price. As to the type of property, you have to consider what’s ava ilable in your community and potential rental rates. If you can buy a four-unit property and live in one unit you can generally qualify for low-cost owner-occupant financing -- meaning you’ll have a lot of income to off-set your expenses. ******************* For sale: Tread mill $40; bar bell and dumb bell weights cement filled .50cents and $1 each. 708-837-9814

Question: Can you explain the difference b e t w e e n a “ h om e w a r r a nt y ” a n d homeowner’s insurance? Answer: A “home warranty” is typically a promise by a builder or home warranty company to ma ke repairs or prov ide replacements in the event a product or system doesn’t work. Such warranties are inevitably “limited” warranties, meaning the builder or home warranty company is only taking on so much liability. When looking at warranties always ask about dollar limits, deductible, fees and charges to make a claim and the length of the warranty period. Homeowner’s insurance is the fire, t heft and liabilit y coverage required when you get a mortgage and which all homeow ners should have. There a re varying levels of protection, but you at least want enough coverage to assure the full replacement of the property in the event of disaster. For specifics, speak with an insurance broker in your community. MIKE BUDER We are hearing more and more about strategic defaults, but is this a good option? First, let’s look at the difference bet ween a “regular default” and “s t r a t e g ic de f a u lt ”. A reg u la r defau lt occu rs w hen t he home ow ner experiences a hardship, such as job loss, divorce, medical bills, etc. They find themselves unable to make their mortgage pay ment s. A st r ateg ic defau lt is where t he homeow ner f i nds t hat their property is no longer worth what they owe and t he y ma ke a de c i sion to just stop ma k i ng their monthly mortgage pay ments a nd wa l k away. These homeowners can afford to make the mont h l y pay ment but t he y ma ke a de c i sion to defau lt. T hey t h i n k that they can raise their credit scores by paying a l l of t hei r ot her bi l ls on time and eventually f i na nce a not her home pu rcha se. Don’t cou nt on it! Homeowners that default due to a hardship normally must wait 2 to 5 years before buying a home again, walk-aways may be facing double that time. It could be as long as 8 years before a strategic defaulter will be able to buy again. Cred it scores a re only part of a complete credit decision. Home ow ner s ne e d t o know that underwriters w i l l scr ut i n i ze t hei r

records very closely and if they find no hardship factors that lead to the default (job loss, health issues, d ivorce), t he r e p a i r e d c r e d it s c or e will not overshadow this black ma rk of a wa l kaway. It should be noted t hat Fa n n ie Mae (t he government backed lending giant), is putting into place measures to discourage homeowners from considering walking a w a y. Fa n n i e M a e w i l l beg i n lock i ng out borrowers from getting new mortgages for 7 years. I n add it ion, t he y a r e going to go after strategic defaulters for the money they are owed in the states where they are permitted to do so. Unfortunately, ma ny people today a re ma k ing rea l estate decisions not based on facts, but on urban myths pa ssed a long by t hei r neighbors and financially broke relatives. They very well could end up being poor decisions. Financial Advice Column

How Can You Declare Your Financial Independence?

A Letter... DEE COLLINS Dear Dee: I a m d ivorced w it h a daug hter. My ex-husband asked me to rekindle our relationship. I am torn because I want to have a stable home for my daughter, but I do not really desire to be in a relationship with him again. I want to be his friend, but he wants more. I do not want to sacrifice my happiness for my daughter’s stability? Am I being selfish? What do I do? Dear great woman and mother: Being selfish is not a bad thing. You are a great woman, and must be assured of that in spite of your current status. As it relates to your daughter, as a mother and woman, you are her emotional stability. Often times, as a result of a divorce, women begin to question themselves, by silently asking the question, “W here did I go wrong?” Well, sometimes in life there is no right or wrong, because it is about God’s purpose and plans for your life. So, forgive yourself because you are forgiven. Don’t allow your divorce make you question yourself as a mother and/or woman at any time. I can see why your ex-husband asked to rekindle the relationship. Since the divorce, I am sure his eyes have been opened to see you as the great woman you have become without him. So, if you aspire to be his friend, then do so with boundaries established and expressed

from the start. Dee Speaks…You Think! – About Life & Relationships I am honored to have answered this great woman’s concerns, and desire to hear yours. In our society, we as men and women are facing so many challenges in life and relationships. Our home and communities are exhibiting this truth. These perplexing trials must be addressed to move from past pains into a bright f ut u re in order to bu i ld wholesome relationships (parental, marital, siblings, f r iendsh ips, busi ness, etc.). T h is is t he true meaning of life. Our f uture generational leaders require and deserve wholesome interact ions. Our homes develop leaders, which are ex hibited within family units. Therefore, broken relat ionsh ips produce lack ada isica l leadership. Great men and women, it’s time to take our power back for our life and legacy! DROP OFF OR MAIL TO: The Shopper • 924 E. 162nd Street, South Holland, IL 60473 PLACE ONLINE: www.myshopper.biz Deadline: Friday 4 p.m. in the office or Noon at our drop boxes. It’s a pleasure serving you!

Next week, we observe t he 4t h of Ju l y w it h spa rk lers, picn ics a nd pa rades. A nd liv ing in a country that offers so much freedom, we have a lot to celebrate. But on a more persona l level, you may still be working toward another type of independence – financial i ndependence. W hat can you do to speed your progress toward this goal? Here are some ideas to think about: • F r e e y ou r s e l f f r om e xc e s si ve fe a r. A s a n investor, it’s not hard to find something to fear. Oil prices, interest rates, political squabbles, even natural disasters – at any given time, each of these factors (and many more) m ig ht b e bl a me d for volatility in the financial ma rket s. I n respon se, many people take a “time out” from investing. Don’t let fear hold you back. It ta kes discipline and some mental toughness to stay invested in a l l economic environments, but if you’re constantly jumping in and out of the ma rket, you’re a l most guaranteed to miss out on the kind of continuity a nd oppor tunit ies you need to move toward your financial freedom. • Liberate your i nvest ment s’ g row t h potential. Many investors avoid i nvest i ng too aggressively, wishing to lower their risk level. And that’s certainly not a bad idea. On the other hand, you can easily slip into investing too “safely” by keeping the bulk of your portfolio in investments that protect your principal but offer so little in the way of return that they may not even keep up with inflation. So, try to always ma inta in a reasonable percentage of g row t hor iented veh icles i n your portfolio. The exact amount may depend on your age and tolerance for

risk, but at virtually every stage of your life, you need some growth potential. • Avoid t he t y ranny of debt. It’s not easy to stay out of debt. But carrying a heavy debt load is truly a burden – you’re not only concerned about making the payments, but you’re also depriving yourself of dollars that could be used to invest for your future. Try to do everything you can to live within your means and avoid racking up more debt t ha n is necessary. And when you do wh it t le dow n you r debts, put that “found” money to work. The more you put in your investment por t fol io, t he more opportunities you have to reach your objectives. • Fr e e y ou r t h i n k i ng about the future. Here’s another roadblock on your journey toward financial i nde p e nde nc e : s hor tterm t hink ing. Instead of seek ing quick ga ins (which a re notoriously hard to achieve), strive for steady grow th. Instead of reacting to the news of t he day by ma k i ng impulsive moves, chart a long-term strategy that’s appropr iate for you r needs, a nd st ick to it. Instead of focusing on the losses you might see on one month’s investment statement, look back over the progress you’ve made over the last five or 10 years. In short, worry less about today – and plan for tomorrow. It w ill ta ke a lot of time, effort and patience to u lt i m atel y ach ie ve you r ow n Fi na ncia l Independence Day. But once you do, you’ll have reason to rejoice – and you won’t even need the fireworks. Cyclists will be able to connect with the Burnham paths in the south suburbs and on the southeast side of the city and eventually make their way all the way to the north side and beyond. This area was almost forgotten in the 80’s and 90’s when the steel mills were all closing and leaving not much behind. But is now becoming a viable and vibrant part of the southeast side and south suburbs. More info as the path is completed and ready for avid cyclists!
