Speaking Of Seniors

www.myshopper.biz/columnists/

Why Isn’t Your Book In The Library? WOODROW WILCOX I received a phone call from Patricia McKay on June 23, 2016. “I loved the articles you sent me. I decided t hat I wa nted to read your book. So, I went to the main library in Lake County to look for it. But, it wasn’t there. I told the reference librarian that it is an important book and it should be at the library,” she told me. T he b o ok t h at s he mentioned is SOLV ING MEDICARE PROBLEM$. I wrote that book so that other people could learn what I do to help seniors f ig ht aga i nst m ista kes and fraud in the Medicare system. In my first seven and a ha l f yea r s of doi ng t hat for t he cl ient s of t he i n su r a nc e a genc y where I work, I saved our senior citizen clients over one million dollars. I est imated t hat ever y year seniors throughout A mer ica pay over one billion dollars in Medicare related medical bills that t he y rea l ly don’t owe because they have no one to help them fight the bad bills. It wa s my hope t hat insura nce agents,

accountants, lawyers, and worship leaders wou ld w a nt to lea r n how to help the seniors in their communities. The book is similar to a college text book rather than a novel, mystery, or western. So, it does not attract much attention to gain publicity in the major media. Pat r icia McKay a nd I met at a business in Highland, Indiana. She asked me what I did for a living. Then, she told me that she had been a medical billing coder. I asked her if she’d like me to send her some of my articles. She agreed and I sent them. That is how she got my articles to read. I f you or s ome one you know would like to read my book w it hout buying it, then I suggest t hat you contact you r lo c a l l ibr a r y a nd a s k t he l ibra r ia n to order S O LV I N G M E D IC A R E PROBLEM$. Michaela Schmidt from Highland working on handicap ramp. ___________________________

First Presbyterian Youth group getting ready to head out to their mission trip. _____________________________________________________

Twenty-four youth and adults from First Presbyterian church in Highland a nd St . Joh n’s Un ited chu rch i n Chesterton traveled to White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. on June 19 to provide missionary work to those in need. Youth director Dave Gibbs of First Presbyterian Church explained how historic flooding occurred during their trip. “We had no power for 28 hours and our water supply was contaminated. In spite of this and the difficulty traveling after the flood we were still able to get to our homes and finish our work.”

During their mission trip the group worked on two homes. In the first home they built a handicap ramp, new back porch, cut down overgrown bamboo and painted several rooms. They built a roof and fixed ceilings for an elderly couple in the other home. The group also took flooded victims water and cleaned mud out of a house. “T he yout h love ma k i ng a dif ference. They do most of t heir mission work right here at home all year long. We think it is important to take one week a year and go someplace

different from where we live and serve those in need. We help others but we find we are richly rewarded by the experience,” Gibbs said. G i bb s h a s b e e n doi n g y out h ministry for 25 years. He has led 31 mission trips. “In a world with so many problems it seems like we can’t make a difference. On these mission trips the youth know that they have made a difference for those in need,” Gibbs said.

District 205 Faculty Make The Most of Summer

District 205 has a long standing tradition of offering quality programs to students throughout the summer. In addition to working with students, District 205 teachers also take advantage of summer break to attend professional development workshops. This past June, over 50 teachers attended AVID’s annual Summer Institute. Teachers, counselors, and administrators traveled to Minneapolis for this year’s Summer Institute. AVID’s Summer Institute includes workshops, team meetings, student and staff speakers, and more. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an internationally recognized college-prep elective course that provides students with skills and strategies they need to be successful in college. At this year’s summer institute, teachers learned more about the program and how to implement strategies to best fit students’ needs. For three jam-packed days, teachers had in-depth discussions about AVID’s core philosophies – writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading - across all content areas. Teachers were also able to network with other teachers across the country in order to share strategies and resources to help students become college and career ready. In addition to learning strategies, teachers also met in teams to discuss the AVID program at each school. The AVID elective class is offered in all three district 205 high schools - Thornridge, Thornton, and Thornwood. Teachers met in school-specific teams to discuss AVID’s progress as well as set goals for the upcoming school year. Teachers who attended the Summer Institute are excited to spread AVID’s mission of college readiness for all students throughout their school. If you have any questions about the AVID program, don’t hesitate to contact your high school!

According to the book, the 9/11 terrorist attacks happen because of a breach in A merica’s div ine hedge of protection. This “breach” was caused by America’s turning away from God. The book argues that America entered into a covena nt w it h God when t he founding fathers incorporated Israel’s laws (from the Bible) into our laws. When our government vowed that it would rise from the 9/11 attacks stronger and more power f u l t ha n before (Isa ia h 9:10) it enacted God’s judgment against unrepentant Israel onto unrepentant America. I do b el ie v e A mer ic a w i l l f ac e judgment from God. Not because of an ancient curse, but because of its atrocities against humanit y. A merica was not founded on the principles of God; it was founded on the genocide of an entire race of people who inhabited this land. And although the nation repented of its sin against Native Americans through former President Bill Clinton, it has yet to repent of its attempted genocide and continued systemic injustices against Blacks/and other people of color. Having a form of god liness (incor porat ing Biblica l principles into its laws) but denying the power thereof (failure to live by God’s

laws) does not make a people or a nation Christian. T h i s cou nt r y ha s l it t le concer n for the plight of the poor, the sick, the elderly, widows, and orphans. Much of American’s poverty is caused by greedy cor porat ions, “boug ht ” pol it icia ns, and racism. Whenever there’s a budget c r i s i s, pr o g r a m s t h at s er v e t he s e popu lat ions a re cut wh i le wa stef u l government spending and loopholes for the wealthy continues. These are the things that bring a nation under God’s judgment, this, and the rejection of God’s Sovereignt y over a ll things. The only light in America’s existence has been the indiv idua l God-fearing men and women who have collectively and actively stood against this country’s ma lt reat ment of its cit i zens by influencing change in its policies and in giving of themselves in practical ways that makes a difference in each life they encounter. I fear for my countr y. More and more we are beginning to resemble the unnamed nation Revelation 13 speaks of. This nation looked like a lamb but spoke like a dragon. Answer: Your insurance company has provided coverage to you for 24 years -but that does not mean they are obligated to prov ide coverage for anyone else, perhaps someone w it h a bad cla ims history. As well, an insurance company is not requ ired to prov ide coverage for pr oper t ie s w h ich do not me et underwriting standards. Your next step should be to contact the local building inspector for your communit y. Ask t hem to look at t he property to determine if your system meets the code. If yes, get a letter from the building inspector so you have proof for the insurance company (and any buyer) that you have met the existing standard. If no, you must upgrade your system. As to buyers, they have a fair and u nder st a ndable ex pec t at ion t hat a property is insurable. For this reason, you must resolve this question before you sell the home, otherwise you will have to disclose the problem to purchasers. That disclosure may trigger a demand for a discount -- enough money to upgrade the system, more if you’re in a “buyers” market.

How Should Investors Respond to “Brexit”?

BOB KRYGSHELD As you know by now, t h e Un i t e d K i n g d o m (U.K.) has voted to leave the European Union. The “Brexit” vote is expected to have major implications for Brita in’s trade a nd economic relationships – but how might it affect you, a s a n i nd iv idua l investor? At f irst g la nce, you might be worried. After all, right after the results came in, we saw a sharp decline in stock markets around the world, including here in the United States. And we may well see more volatility in the near term. But by taking a step back and look ing at t he big picture, you might see that the outlook for investors is nowhere near as gloomy as you may have thought. Here are some suggestions for maintaining your perspective: • Be pat ient . De spite the Brexit vote, it’s not so simple for the U.K. to just pack its bags and bid “adieu” to the European Union. In fact, it may take three or more years before the U.K. actually departs. This extended time period can give financial markets a chance to absorb the new reality – while giving investors time to ponder their long-term strategy. • D on’t f or g e t a b ou t t h e “ f u n d a m e n t a l s .” Financial markets dislike uncertainty, which is why they fell so sharply after Brexit. But the markets move much faster than t he f unda menta ls t hat actually drive stock prices – and, despite Brexit, these f u nd a ment a l s rem a i n generally positive. In the U.S., economic grow t h is expected to continue in t he 2% –2.5% range, and the prospects of a recession remain small. U. S . c o m p a n i e s w i l l continue to operate in Br ita i n as before, a nd British companies will still participate in the global economy. • Review your investment p or t f ol i o – a nd l o ok for oppor t u n it ies. If you’ve done a good job of building a diversified portfolio that’s based on your indiv idua l needs, For sale: Antique dining table, dark real heavy wood. 75-1/2 long 37-1/2W 291/4H $200 or best offer. 708263-7956 Fo r s a l e : J r. goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, you may not need to take any action in the immediate aftermath of Brexit. Diversification is especially important, b e c a u s e it ’s p o s s i b le t hat some f i na ncia l a sset s may be more negat ively a f fected by Brexit than others; you can blunt this impact by owning a wide range of i nvest ment s. (Keep i n mind, though, that while diversification can ease the effects of volatility, it can’t guarantee profits or protec t aga i n st a l l losses.) A s you rev iew your holdings, you may even wa nt to consider adding international and U.S. stocks, if appropriate for your situation, to take advantage of the drop in pr ice of ma ny qua l it y compa nies. As a lways, of course, be aware that the value of your shares w ill f luctuate a nd you may lose principal. Also, internationa l investing does carry some special risks, mostly related to c u r renc y f luc t uat ion s and foreign political and economic events. • Keep you r foc us on the long term. If Brexitinspired volatility does go on for a while, keep your focus on your long-term f i na ncia l goa ls, wh ich have not cha nged. By staying focused on the “far horizon,” so to speak, you’ll be less tempted to make short-term moves that may not be in your best interest. The Brexit vote may not be a positive development for the global economy. But we’ve got ten pa st bigger events in the past, including wars and other political crises, and we’ll get through this one, too. As the British themselves famously posted on their walls during World War II, “Keep Calm and Carry On.” That’s good advice for investors, too. Put The Right Hat On!

For sale: Deuacraft natural cool moisture humidifier $8. 708-333-9225

MIKE BUDER In today’s real estate industry, mortgage rules a nd t he w ay bu si ness i s done cha nge da i ly. Whether you are a buyer, a seller or a real estate agent you need to expect problems. A re you a nd you r agent problem solvers or solut ion seekers? Seriously, what do you focus on? Do you focus on the problem or do you focus on t he solut ion? There is a big difference between these seemingly similar approaches. Here’s my ta ke…let’s say t he home inspection didn’t come out quite the way the seller or buyer wanted it to. Some agent s get their shorts in a bunch and “blame” the clueless inspector as if he is the problem and other agents get busy finding solutions to what needs to be fixed along with the buyer and sel ler. W h ich agent is bringing better energy to the transaction? W hich agent comes across more professional, trustworthy and w ith the abilit y to get the job done? Seems pret t y si mple to me. I mean think about it – if what we focus on expands – then why in the world would you focus on the problem? W hy not look for solutions? I know this may seem “simple” but I don’t think it’s as simple as we all believe. In fact it’s quite profound! It’s a

lot more energ i zing to look for solutions. And it certainly is more creative a nd sat isf y ing as wel l. Think about this if you’ve got a “hitch-in-the-git-along” in your real estate t ra nsact ion. Approach the situation w ith your solution-seeker hat rather than your problem solver hat. Visualize the solution hat on your head (ok-I k now t h is is sou nd i ng a little air y fair y but it work s). Ta ke t he t i me to not ice how much smoot her t he situation seems to get handled and how qu ick ly solut ion s come to m i nd. Not ice how the other parties in the transaction respond to you. And - notice how you feel! Seriously – if you practice solution-seeking enough it can change your life for the good – not to mention help to get your rea l estate t ra nsact ion closed. COLDWELL BANKER SCHERERVILLE BIDS A DIEU TO ACE SECRETA RY K AITLYN MCCABE: After five years of faithful service during the week and on weekends, 23 year old Kaitlyn McCabe of Crown Point will heading off to greener pastures (i.e. a real job!) The office wanted to show Kaitlyn their appreciation so Manger Broker Jim Oster decided to host a (surprise) barbeque in her honor on Wednesday June 28, 2016 complete with a delicious banana cake and speeches of praise for our dear Kaitlyn! She is the daughter of Tony and Lila McCabe (and the niece of Jim and Marta McCabe, retired CB agents). Kaitlyn is a December 2015 Purdue Calumet graduate and a 2011 Lake Central graduate. A whiz in all things mathematic, Kaitlyn will be working in that field. And, since the young lady is not all work and no play, she is a seasoned musician whose hobby includes playing guitar, piano, ukulele, and bass. “I also want to learn violin” she explains, in what free time she may have. She also enjoys cooking and rock climbing (inside, not outside-yet!) Blessings and Best Wishes to Kaitlyn McCabe-Many successes and happiness along the way! *** DY ER HISTOR IC A L SOCIET Y TO HOST L ESL IE GODDA R D ON ‘ T I TA N IC ST E WA R DE S S V IOL E T JESSOP” We are invited to attend the Dyer Historical Society Tuesday July 12th, 2016 meeting, in the Dyer Town Hall, 1 Town Square, starting at 7 p.m. Ms. Goddard will present her program on “Titanic Stewardess Violet Jessop” as she portrays Jessop who survived t he sink ing of t he RMS Titanic in 1912 and then just four years later, the sinking of the HMHS Britannic! Refreshments will be served. I for one would love to know how she managed to survive 2 major sea disasters and live to tell the tale. Talk about lucky. of Notre Dame who taught for many years at bot h St. Columba and St. Florian Churches in the Hegewisch neighborhood on the far southeast side of Chicago. So far southeast in fact that these two parishes are the last of the Chicago Catholic Parishes prior to coming to the south suburbs and Northwest Indiana. The part y also bid a fond farewell to Sister Mary Ma rga ret Mu r phy, t he last of t he sisters who taught at St. Columba and St. Florian and Sister Julita Jelen who moved to an assisted living facility on the North Side some months ago. Sister Julita celebrated her 80th Jubilee as a Religious last year and is turning 100 this year! Sister Mary Margaret will move to Brookfield, Il and share rooms with other Religious retirees. The celebration committee led by Cla ra Gad zi nsk i wou ld especia l ly like to thank St. Columba Pastor Fr. Charles Watkins for his support in the joyful endeavor along with Pastor Emeritus Fr. Kilian Knittel; Deacon David Keene; Knights of Columbus General Pulaski, Gene Slusarczyk and John Thurman; musicians Clifford Clanin and Pam Livorski; f lowers by Mark Ramos and general all around coordinator Ron Segvich. Others who helped immeasurably included: Jamie Kasprzycki, parish secretary; Gambino and Grace Sanchez; Mary Wachowski; Sharon Rolek; Karen Lenart; Carolyn Ma lew ick i; Pat Tomcza k; Dorot hy Nowakowski; Pat Stibich; Pat Majewski and yours truly (a labor of love for sure). A huge Thank You to the School Sisters of Notre Dame and the Benedictines for their dedicated work with the students and families of St. Columba and St. Florian. The Sunday celebration was the end of an era of Religious women who taught at the schools and became part of the tapestry of life in that part of the city. The event was dedicated to Sisters’ Julita and Margaret, but was a tribute to all the Sisters and lay teachers who taught at the two schools. Mere words pale when we try and thank them for their years of love and devotion. Our hearts are with you always. ***
