ARLO KALLEMEYN The Shopper has spent the last 36 years residing at 924 E. 162nd St reet in South Holland. This location is on the west side of the building on Route 6. Why our street has over 4 different names that include River Oaks Drive in Calumet City and 159th St. in Markham will be a column for another day. On Monday Ju ly 18, T he Shopper moved 2 doors to the east in the same building. Now this may not seem like a very big move, but after living in one place for over 30 years a certain amount of clutter builds up. We have been busy â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;declutteringâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; t he item s t hat a re no longer needed to publish a newspaper. Computers have replaced traditional t hings like da rk rooms, light tables, negatives, and layout paper. File cabinets are no longer needed as

computer hard drives now provide storage. Ad design is now done by computer graphic designers t hat work on desk top c omputer s w it h l a r ge screens. Even the large screens are not as big as the typesetting machines of yesteryear. So we are consolidating and moving 2 doors down. This leaves a space that is available for a not her long-t i me South Holland business to move into. You will have to tune in to my column nex t week to f i nd out which business this will be. In July 2015, a client from Crown Point brought to me a bill from Mayo Clinic for $2,388.92. He wanted to know why he got the bill since he had b ot h Me d ic a re a nd a Me d ic a r e s upplement insurance policy through our insurance agency. I i nvest igated t he m at ter, fou nd t he problem, and wrote to the Mayo Clinic for our client. The client got the good news t hat t he bi l l had been fixed and paid. But, he forgot to tell me that. I wrote to him earlier this year and asked him if t he matter had been resolved or i f he st i l l needed my help. I told him t hat a hospita l or doctor will respond to the patient and not to me. On July 8, 2016, t he client visited our office, told me that the bill was

corrected, and apologized for not informing me of that sooner. The bottom line is that we saved the client $2,388.92. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. Nimona is the story of girl who has no desire to become the hero. She’s all about destruction and mayhem. Ni mona ha s a ver y unique superpower a nd u si ng it for good is cer ta i n ly out of t he quest ion. Ni mona ca n t ra nsfor m hersel f i nto any person or creature and still retain her ability to speak. Nimona knows her ability could be very useful to the local villain. She heads over to Lord Ba l l ister Black hea r t i n order to of fer up her s e r v ic e s i n h i s q ue s t of v i l la iny. W hi le Lord Blackheart is really not in the market for a sidekick, he c a n’t overlook t he skills that Nimona could bring to his operat ion. It isn’t long before Lord Black heart rea lizes t he t r ut h behind Nimona’s pa st a nd her consta nt mental state aimed only towa rd dest r uct ion. Nimona and Lord Black hea rt become t he best representation of an anti-hero that you can’t help but root for, despite t hei r ac t ion s a nd t he consequences. Nimona i s ju st one of t he ma ny fa nt a st ic graphic novels that are being released every day. The illustrations are as captivating as the Nimona character. While I’m not ne c e s s a r i l y a g r a ph ic novel fan, I loved this book and wished that the story continued on.

Athlete’s Feet

Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. If law enforcement continues to deny that there is a problem in how some of their officers treat Blacks, violence (like what we saw in Dallas) against police officers w ill increase. Martin Luther King said, “A riot is the language of the unheard.” King a lso said, “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” Before t here ca n be a ny genuine healing between the Black community and Law Enforcement there must be an acknowledgement that there is a problem in how some officers treat Blacks. Only then can meaningful dialogue begin between both parties to bring resolve. When I look at the diverse crowds of people attending memorials for both slain

officers and victims of police shootings, I know that the vast majority of American citizens are not div ided. We want to live in harmony and peace. However, among the majority of those who run our government and the criminal justice system there is division. And perhaps the best way to begin closing the divide is to mandate all elected officials to a service of two terms. While at the doctor’s office Tuesday evening (7-12-16) a CNN news program was on, that featured a representative f r om l a w en f or c ement . He s t at e d t hat Black communit y leaders need to ride with police officers so they can understand how difficult their job is, and why they have to make snap judgment calls when in the field. I’d like to propose a similar invitation to Law Enforcement Officials. Go to a dermatologist and ask for treatment to change your skin color from white to black. And for 1 year move into an apartment in a Black community where unarmed Black boys and men have died at the hands of rogue officers to understand what a majority of Blacks in America experience every day. O ver t he pa st yea r I have been opt imist ic about some of the things t hat t he gover n ment and banks are doing to t r y a nd m a k e h om e s a nd loa n s a f ford a ble, and ma ke short selling a proper t y easier for a homeowner who has no other sensible alternative. As we a ll k now, homes that sit vacant over time, on the simplest level, are just not attractive (or as my 15 year old daughter would say, they’re “ugly”). But not only are they an eye sore and a cause for depression w it h i n t he neighborhoods that they are in, more importantly they do not help stimulate t he economy, which is really needed right now! A homeowner living in a home who is paying their mortgage is contributing in ma ny ways : t hey a re pay i ng i nterest to the banks, who in turn i nvest t hei r money i n t he nat iona l ma rket s. T hey a re consu m i ng goods for t he home – p e r s o n a l p r o p e r t y, appl ia nc e s, f u r n it u re, cleaning supplies, plants, electronics, etc. And by doing this they are helping to keep the employees of a l l t hose c ompa n ie s employ e d . T hey a re pay i ng for utilities – helping keep that sector of the economy going and keeping those workers employed. They are homeowners, so not

on ly d id t hey prov ide a transaction for 2 real e s t at e a gent s , a lo a n of f icer, a t it le of f icer, etc…but they will most l i kely someday need to upgrade or relocate, which also keeps those professionals in the real estate busi ness goi ng. A nd ver y i mpor ta nt ly, especially here in I l l i nois, a homeow ner pays proper t y ta xes. This is a huge source of revenue for the state and local government to be able to fund education, pr o g r a m s a nd pu b l ic works projects. When we as Realtors help a client to short sale their property to avoid foreclosure, or when we assist buyers in purchasing bank REO’s we a re act ua l ly g iv ing our loca l a nd nat iona l economy a push. The Calumet City Historical Society hosted Attorney George Petrich of Burnham, Il Sunday July 10, 2016 at the Historical Society and Museum, 760 Wentworth Avenue, to a packed house of history buffs. Petrich and his wife Rose have owned and lived in the house, 14200 S. Burnham Avenue, directly across from the entrance of Burnham Woods Golf Course since 1993.The 2 story Dutch Colonial was built in 1926 and legend has it that Capone had it built. That is not true, It was built by John Patton a ‘colleague’ of Capone, Big Jim Colosimo, John Torrio and the ‘boys’ of the day who ruled the crime syndicate. The house is on a gorgeous corner, with 144 foot of frontage and 125 foot depth. Petrich and his wife have left the house pretty much as they found it with the classic Italian marble, Oak flooring, brass fittings, cedar closets and so on intact. The glorious and indestructible clay tile roof “will be here long after we are all gone,” Petrich allowed. They made some concessions to upgrades but the character of the house remains unchanged--a great selling point should they ever decide to sell. Pet rich says t hat w ill not happen and plans to leave the house to his granddaughter some day. Going back to the legend of the house, much of the rumor has it that the house was connected by an underground tunnel to the long demolished private club house at the golf course, where the illegal games of chance took place. When discovered by the police, the participants would flee the club house underground to the Patton house on the corner. The golf course in the1920’s and 1930’s was private for the use of a select few of Capone and his cronies. Petrich paid $200,000 for the house in 1993. In 1926 it cost $65,000 to build and was built to last on an elevation which “gives a sense of peace and quiet,” Petrich explained. Adding that the solid construction of the house insulates against traffic noise (or any ot her noise) outside on Burnha m Avenue. This is just a brief overview of Petrich’ talk. For the long version you will have to read the book he plans to write--someday! ***
