Texting While Walking Earns $85 Fine

ARLO KALLEMEYN I know from experience that more and more drivers are texting whi le driv ing. You ca n just tell. They think that driving 5 miles below the speed limit will give them the extra time to read or write a text - and no one will ever know. What they hope no one else notices is that they drift out of their lane, slam on their brakes at the last minute, and sit at the stop light long after it has turned green. A New Jersey town is tired of people texting while driving – and while wa l k ing. For t Lee New Jersey has had 3 fatalities t hat were caused by people tex t i ng wh i le crossing the street. I’m guessing that they forgot t h e i r p a r e n t ’s a d v i c e to look both ways. Fort Lee, N.J. police said they w i l l beg i n issu i ng $ 85 t icket s to pe de st r ia n s

who are caught texting while wa lk ing. Perhaps the pedestrians in New Jersey don’t rea li ze a l l the features of their fancy tex t i ng mach i nes. T he new features of electronic gadgets are hard to keep up with after all. Maybe t he y don’t k now t h at their texting machine has a great feature, they can press a single button or tap the screen once, hold it up to their ear, and actually talk to the person on the other end. That way they can keep both eyes on the sidewalk in front of them. Any way, I hope it helps keep people safer in New Jersey – I’m just not sure you can cure stupid with an $85 ticket. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher a nd big fan of texting while stationary.

Yugoslavian Couple Still Likes Me

On Ju ly 13, 2015, a s e n ior c it i z e n c ou p le visited me for help with a medical bill problem. The couple is originally from Yugoslavia and they now live in Schererville, Indiana. I made phone ca l ls with them to check on a medica l bi l l f rom 2013 for $150. The compa ny that sent the bill claimed that the man had signed a d o c u m e nt a l lo w i n g t hem to bi l l h i m even i f Med ica re ref used to help pay for the medical e qu ipment . I told t he biller to send a copy of t hat doc u ment to ou r client for his review. Then, I explained to the client that if he did sign such a document, I would not be able to help him regarding the bill. “ T h a t ’s o k a y. I u n d e r s t a n d . I t ’s n o problem. You helped us plenty before, the man told me.

“Do you remember helping us before? his wife asked me. “Last time, you helped us with a bill that I got. You saved us about seven t hou sa nd dollars. I recognized t he couple as clients that I had helped earlier, but I had forgotten those details. I guess they still like me. They invited me to attend a Serbia n fest iva l w it h t hem at a loca l church later this year. I like being appreciated. Note : Woodrow Wi lcox is the senior medical bill c a se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of t hat i nsu ra nce agenc y over one million dollars by cor rec t i ng med ic a l bi l l e r r or s c au s e d b y mistakes in the Medicare system. Genesius Guild brings hope alive with “GHOST: The Musical” The Genesius Guild of First United Met hod ist Ha m mond closes t hei r current season by showing how love never dies in t heir latest of fering, GHOST: The Musical. The show, a Northwest Indiana premiere, will be July 26 weekend. GHOST is a timeless fantasy about the power of love, based upon the film of the same name. Sam (Geoffrey Bach) is trapped as a ghost between this world and the next trying to communicate w it h his g irlf riend Molly (Kassidy Norman) through a phony psychic (Antoinette Gomez) in the hope of saving her from his murderer. GHOST has been adapted for the stage by original screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin who, in 1991, won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for the film. The film, starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Tony Goldw yn, and W hoopi Goldberg also garnered an Oscar for Goldberg for Best Supporting Actress. The show offers a roller-coaster ride of romance, drama and excitement for both fans of the original film and for fans of the live theatre. “This is an iconic, classic stor y people know from the film, but it is a totally different experience on stage,” says director Ed Griffith “The special ef fects and f low of t he stor y have presented quite a challenge for [the Concrete & Patching. Video Village is Closing Video Village at 15401 Cottage Grove in Dolton is closing. There has been a video store operating in the same location for 33 years. Originally, it was Star Video, which closed in year 2000. Video Village recognized there was still a demand for v ideo and welcomed the opportunity to continue to serve the community with a video store. Video Village will finally close it’s door for the last time sometime in either late August or early September. Over the last decade, illegal bootlegs, online streaming, DV D by mail and the red renta l boxes have given t he mov ie watching public many options for viewing their favorite movies. Even though Video Village has many loyal customers, there just isn’t enough incoming revenue to meet the expenses. Video Village hopes many of the Dolton’s store customers will frequent the two remaining Video Villages, either at the Hazel Crest or the Steger locations. Jan Yohe, owner of Video Village, says she

remembers the only way to see a movie was either at the theater or renting a VHS or Beta from a video store. It was before computers and cell phones. It cost $8.00 to rent a VHS for one night, and you were required to leave a $50.00 returnable deposit for each VHS rented. We even rented VHS machines to watch the movies. Over the years, Video Vi l lage rented ma ny d if ferent for mats including laser discs and numerous game formats. The laser disc was two sided and in the middle of the movie, one would have to get up and turn the disc over to see the second half. Video was so popular, that the busiest rental day was New Years Eve, it was just the thing to do. Video Village feels fortunate to have ser ved the communit y of Dolton/South Holland for over 15 years. Much of the success of the business is directly due to it’s long term loyal employees, Harold and Mickey.

Random Reads BRANDI SMITS Mosquitoland by David Arnold Mim is not okay. She’s not ashamed of it; it’s just a fact. Mim’s life took a devastating turn when her parents decided to split. She had always been close to her mother Celeste but after the divorce, Mim was forced to move away from her home and her mother in Cleveland and relocate in Mississippi with her dad and his new wife, Kathy. Nothing about living in the mosquito-infested state was idea l for Mim. On top of the divorce and the move, Mim has always had a few issues that required her to see a t herapist, mainly at the insistence of her father. After sneaking through some letters she fou nd bet ween Celeste and Kathy, Mim finds out that her mother is ver y sick. K now ing t hat her fat her won’t a l low her to visit her mother, Mim sets off on her own to take a bus to Cleveland. Mim takes Kathy’s secret coffee can cash stash of $800, a journal she addresses as Iz, and a tube of lipstick that belonged to her mom wh ich she uses as wa r paint. Mim’s bus trip led her

to encounter quite a cast of characters. Some were pleasant like Carl the bus driver and Arlene, the old woman sitting next to her on the bus. Others were deceptive and dangerous like the man Mim calls Poncho man. Mim’s trip h it s some u nex pe c te d bumps and her bus road trip quickly turns into a mess of sit uat ions a nd people that will eventually get her to Cleveland. Mim realizes that reaching her destination presents her with unexpected results and unbelievable answers to all of her questions. Mosquitoland is not a book driven by a fastmoving plot. Mim takes us t hrough her journey usi ng her jou r na l a s a conduit. We learn about her emot ion s a nd her choices as she explains t hem to Iz. A rnold creates a unique cast of cha rac ter s w it h w hom Mim interacts. At times Mim appears to be ver y intelligent and deliberate w it h her act ions wh i le other times she relies on her emot ions to d i rect her pat h. Mosquitoland is a cerebra l read t hat introduces a unique view of an individual’s battle with mental illness.

Athlete’s Feet

Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. If you have any questions concerning athlete’s feet or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

I hea r a lot of ta lk about today’s church; more negative than positive from both the Christian and non-Christian. Unfor tunately some of t he negat ive things said are true. There was a time when the very presence of God was seen and felt from the local church. Godless men a nd women respected her a nd refrained from vulgar conversations and immoral behavior when in the company of her people. Even the church building and grounds were regarded as sacred. One Sunday mor ning as worshipers entered the building, I observed from my car in the church’s parking lot, a neighbor walk his dog through the church lawn to poop. What has happen to the church that has caused our society to disrespect her? Years ago the introduction of salt substitutes was very popular. It looked like salt. It sprinkled like salt when shook from a salt shaker. So, I tried it. Ugh! It was awful! It had a metallic after taste. In the trash it went! Not only did it taste bad, it also turned out be a health risk to healthy people and potentially fatal to people being treated for certain diseases. Cou ld it be t hat t he chu rch ha s become so much like the world that it has lost its flavor (saltiness)? The Apostle

John said the world would know that Christians belonged to Jesus by the love they have for one another. W hen the world peers through the window of our heart, do they see Jesus’ love expressed in our relationships with one another? Or do they see a reflection of themselves? The Apostle Paul wrote that Christians are Ambassadors of Christ representing Him and His Kingdom on earth. When the lost walk through the doors of our gatherings, do they see God and His Kingdom, or do they see a replica of the kingdom of this world? We have be en c a l le d to be t he Salt of the earth. Our presence slows the decaying process of the people we come i n contact w it h, g iv i ng t hem an opportunity to hear the gospel and become members of God’s family. As salt of the earth, we bring hope, purpose and direction to those who look to the church for answers to their crisis. But if we’ve lost our flavor…………? For questions and/or comments send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I’m a first time home buyer. I’m 18 years old and getting married in April to a man who is 23 years old. He has good credit but I’m afraid we won’t be able to get a mortgage in time for the wedding. He has two car loans already and his jobs aren’t really that great. If you put all three of his jobs together he makes around six to seven hundred dollars a week. Where do you think would be the best place for us to get a loan. Where is the first place we should try? Answer: You should be congratulated for thinking ahead and your future husband should be recognized for his willingness to work. It’s not necessary to have a mortgage in place by the time you’re married. In fact, it may not be a good choice. The reason is that you, at age 18, need some time to either continue your education or get a job. The first choice will increase your potential earnings while the second will help you generate dollars that can be used to build savings and pay off those pesky car loans. Before buy i ng a home you need to consider your local market and your preferences. Are home prices rising or July 25th, 9-4.  1 6 8 3 6 C l y d e Ave . , S o. Holland.  PREMIUM Garage sale. falling? Is the job base growing? Is the population increasing? How will you get to work? Where will you be living in five years? You can speak with several lenders rega rding loa n progra ms t hat might work for you. Once you can qualify for a program you will know how much house you can afford. Then speak with a local broker regarding properties now available that would meet your needs. As to a new home by your wedding day, allow me to suggest that you are best served carefully examining your options and waiting until the right property is available. If that happens by your wedding day that’s great; if not, that’s okay too. The purchase of a home is a long-term investment, a process which should not be rushed. A Good CMA MIKE BUDER W hen a Realtor comes to your home for a l ist i ng appoi nt ment, t he cr u x of act iv it y is centered a rou nd w hat we in the industry refer to a s t he Compa rat ive Market Analysis (CMA). To t he i ne x p e r ie nc e d sellers out there, here’s a brief over view of how a CM A works…It’s your home versus every other compa rable proper t y in t he immediate area ! This is how we, as agents, help our sellers establish a realistic asking price. Recent ly sold l ist i ngs, ex pi red l ist i ngs, a nd act ive listings a ll need to be taken into account w h i le e st a bl i s h i ng a n acceptable price range. And believe you me, the vast amount of properties on t he ma rket today make it necessary to take great care in compiling a “good” CM A. Let’s go over how each l i st i ng t y pe a f fect s t he CM A : ACTIVE LISTINGS – This is you r compet it ion ! The idea is to basically attempt to out price your competitors, addressing subt le d i f ferences i n value between your home a nd t he rest. E X PIRED LISTINGS – Learn from t he shor tcom i ngs of ot hers ! T hese homes never make it to closing because they were most likely priced incorrectly, t houg h, i n some c a s e serious defects may have been present. RECENTLY SOL D L IST INGS – T he homes t hat ma ke it to closings are obviously the successful ones! Matching these listings as close as

possible ser ves to be a good indicator for how your home will perform i n t he cu r rent ma rket. Note: Pending sales are gener a l l y t r e ate d l i ke ac t ive l i st i ngs for t he simple reason t hat you ju s t don’t k now w h at of fer wa s accepted, a s well as if whether or not t he s a le w i l l ac t u a l l y close. As a general rule of t humb, Rea ltors like to stay within a 3-month window for comparable closed sales, we also try to narrow down the list of comparables to a specific map coordinate (usually 1 squa re m i le), on ly w idening the gap when necessary. This keeps the information as relevant as possible. It’s the job of t he l ist i ng agent to take all these factors into account, in an attempt to find a “happy medium”. Rest assured that with a professional on the job, you won’t be steered in the wrong direction. The CMA is just another step on the road to something big! BOB KRYGSHELD W h a t ’s y o u r m o s t v a lua ble a s set ? W h i le you a re st i l l work i ng , this asset may actually be your f uture income — so you need to protect it. And you can do so by maintaining adequate life insurance, which can help provide your family with the financia l resources necessary to meet critical ex penses (mor tgage payments, college tuition, and so on) should you pass away premat u rely. But what ty pe of insurance shou ld you pu rcha se ? There’s no one “r ig ht” answer for everyone, but by knowing some of the basics of different polices and how they relate to your specific needs, you can ma ke an informed decision. As its name suggests, term insurance is desig ned to la st for a s p e c i f ic t i m e p e r io d , such as 10 or 20 years. You pay t he premiums a nd y ou g e t a d e a t h benefit (beneficiaries of your policy w ill collect t he mone y w hen y ou pass away). In genera l, term insurance may be appropriate for you if you on ly need coverage to protect a goal with an “end date,” such as paying off your mortgage or seeing you r ch i ld ren t h roug h college. Term may also be a reasonable choice if you need a lot of coverage but can’t afford permanent insurance. Permanent insurance is more expensive because you r prem iu ms a lso prov ide you w it h t he op p or t u n i t y t o b u i l d cash value. Some types of permanent insurance may pay you a fixed rate of return, while other policies offer you the chance to put money into accounts sim i la r to invest ments av a i lable t h roug h t he

financial markets. These va r iable accou nt s w i l l f luctuate in value more than a fixed-rate policy, so you will need to take your risk tolerance into account when choosing among the available choices. Permanent insurance may be suitable if you want to ensure a guaranteed death benefit for life, rather than just for a certain time period or if you have a high net worth and are seeking ta x-advantaged ways of transferring wealth. St i l l, you may have heard that you might be better off by paying the less costly premiums for term and using the savings to invest in the financial markets. However, t his st r ate g y a s s u me s you w ill invest t he sav ings rather than spend them, and that you will receive a n i nv e st ment ret u r n greater than the growth potential you receive from per ma nent i n su r a nc e. Bot h a re assu mpt ions, not g ua ra ntees. If you are considering the “buy ter m a nd i nvest t he difference” route, you will need both a consistent i nv e s t ment d i s c ipl i ne and a willingness to take a greater risk with your money, in hopes of higher returns. In a ny ca se, you r f i na nc ia l profe s siona l can review your situation w it h you and help you determine whether term or permanent insurance is best suited for your needs. But don’t delay in getting the coverage your family ne e d s — t he f ut u re i s unpredictable, so it pays to be prepared.

For your convenience,

DOWNEY PARK IN CALUMET CITY OPENS GRANDLY: Calumet Memorial Park District officials and volunteers enjoyed the park’s official grand opening Wednesday evening July 15th, 2015. The weather participated and the splash pads were splashing and the youngsters were having a great time! CMPD Chairman Charles Dockery welcomed the neighbors to THEIR park! The emphasis was that Downey Park, corner of Stewart and Jeffery Avenue, a few blocks north of Pete’s Market on Sibley was a product of the neighbors needs and wants. Evolving over a series of meetings and a few years, they got what they wanted. New basketball courts, a baseball diamond, splash pads, kiddie gyms rides and of lots of new free entertainment. Pictured here is the Ribbon Cutting featuring new Park President and Calumet City City Clerk, Nyota Figgs, Charles Dockery and Stan Miller along with other park officials. Stan’s name is synonymous with the Calumet City Parks and Calumet Memorial Park District as he has been both a volunteer and staffer for many, many years. In another picture, Charles Dockery at center is pictured with DJ Kevin Keith and a park staffer and guests under the new pavilion which will house special events such as this and picnickers. Paula Counts is the new Downey Park Manager and was head cheerleader that evening announcing and inviting all to the free movie and dances planned all simmer long. For more information call the CMPD at 708862-6443. *** WOOFS, WAGS AND WEINERS: Set for Sunday July 26th, 2015 at The Green Olive, 13501 S. FISH FRY FRIDAYS AT VFW GRIFFITH POST 9982 MMRL: Usually, fish fry’s are associated with the Lenten season in February and March, but those lucky enough to drop by the Griffith VFW at 301 Main Street can have their choice of fish, pork chops or rib eye steaks every Friday evening from 4 to 8 year round. Pictured here during a recent fun evening at the Post are Fran, Clyde, Dave, Judy, Rich and Cathy (CeCe) the VFW server. The fish, chops and steaks are delicious and served with potatoes, salad, bread, and even a home made dessert if you have any room after the filling meal. For information call them at 219-924-6102. *** SPECIAL VIP GUEST VISITS THE L ANSING VETERAN’S MEMORIAL: Acclaimed actor Gary Sinise visited the Lansing Veteran’s Memorial last Sunday at the behest of the Ford Family (the Ford Hangar family). Gary was only there for a short time, but the afternoon was wonderful with the band “Xtra Xtra” playing and refreshments provided by J.J. Kelly’s. Gary presented a check to the Lansing Memorial Foundation and members of the Southeast Side Vietnam Veteran’s and the Lansing Veteran’s Ceremonial Honor Guard were invited to attend. The memorial had been spiffed up for the occasion by Master Landscaper HG Member, Pete Matrenec of Lansing. Pete planted new evergreen trees and replaced the wood chips with sod and planted bamboo trees and ornamental banana trees around the periphery of the iconic and revered memorial. Gary Sinise has a real soft spot in his heart for veterans and hosts concerts and fundraisers for them and plays in his own Lt. Dan Band after his character in the Academy award winning film “Forest Gump.” *** OUTDOOR FUN AT FAITH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH SATURDAY JULY 25TH: Pastor Charles M.
