Summer Vocal Camp Keeps The Music Alive The music will not stop this summer for young children as Books, Brushes & Bands for Education reinvents their school year Let’s Sing! vocal group as a weeklong summer camp. First taking place in 2012, Let’s Sing! is a vocal music program for children 5 to 7—without residency restriction— and is meant as an introduction to group singing, focusing on diction. This summer marks the third installment of Let’s Sing!, following record participation in this year’s spring session. “Through intense programs like Let’s Sing!, children discover that the most fulfilling achievements are only reached by working hard and being committed; the earlier they start, the more internalized these values are,” Michelle Golden, president of Books, Brushes & Bands for Education said. Camp will meet every morning from 10 am to 12 pm, featuring supplemental material on the alphabet and readings of children’s books. The highlight of the camp will be a family picnic and singalong, to be held on the last day. “There is something special about teaching children so young, they have a sense of curiosity and openness that let them appreciate music in a way that it takes more effort for adults to,” said Mike Cierski, director of the group. Let’s Sing! Summer Camp will take place July 29 to Aug, 2 at United Lutheran Church, 6705 Calumet Ave. in Hammond, with no residency restriction or necessary experience. Lansing Police Cadet attends National Leadership Academy

On June 23-29, 2013, Lansing Police Cadet Captain Alex Ascolani attended the 2013 National Law Enforcement Exploring Leadership Academy hosted by the US Drug Enforcement Administration. Alex was one of thirty Explorers selected to attend from over 225 applicants from the entire nation. The academy focused on leadership development and insight into federal law enforcement. The Explorers arrived in Washington DC on Saturday, June 23rd and were treated to a night tour of the Nation’s Capital and the memorials. Sunday brought small group tours of the Smithsonian Museums prior to boarding the bus for the ride to the DEA Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Classes were held every day at the Academy. Other highlights of the trip included a trip to the US Secret Service Academy in Beltsville, Maryland, and a behind the scenes tour of the US Capitol complex including a visit to the House Justice Committee hearing. The Explorers also visited Arlington National Cemetery where they participated in a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This visit culminated with an informal dinner with US Army Provost Marshal Major General David Quantock. The Explorers also visited the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial where Alex was selected to participate in a Wreath Laying Ceremony to honor those officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, including our own

In 1998, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) executed an agreement with the owner of the Thornton quarry to mine the north lobe of the quarry for use as an important component of the MWRD’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP). Since that time, 152 billion pounds of 400 million year old dolomite limestone has been removed from the Thornton Composite Reservoir, and while blasting and construction continues, this project is due for completion in less than three years. Located along Interstate 80 in southern Cook County, Thornton Reservoir, which is designed to reduce pollution and flooding, will have almost eight billion gallons of combined sewage and stormwater storage capacity. are designed to reduce the amount of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and hold the polluted water until it can be fully treated at MWRD water reclamation plants. Since the TARP tunnels went online, the average number of days with CSOs in a year has reduced to 50 from 100. TARP was the first system of its kind to address pollution and flooding and is emulated by cities around the world, including London, Singapore, and Vienna. While these projects are large and costly, TARP has provided solid evidence that such a system is effective and valuable infrastructure. The Thornton Reservoir is set to come online at the same time as disinfection facilities at the MWRD’s Calumet Water Reclamation Plant in Chicago, which also serves the southern area of the county. American Red Cross Encourages Donors to be Twice the Hero You can be twice the hero to people in need this summer by donating the double red cell way through the American Red Cross. A double red cell donation involves giving two units of red cells through an automated donation process. Donors who may be strapped for time will find the collection technology ideal since it allows you to give more of what some patients need. “Red blood cells are the most frequently used blood component, and are needed by almost every patient who needs a blood transfusion,” said Sharyn Whitman, CEO for the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. “Not a day goes by that someone, somewhere doesn’t need red blood cells for emergency or ongoing medical care. While a donation of double red cells takes about 30 minutes longer than a whole blood donation, the waiting period between donations is 112 days versus 56 days for whole blood. When taken together, the overall time commitment for one double red cell donations is less that giving two units of whole blood. Donors who meet certain criteria may be eligible to safely donate double red cells. And blood donors with types O and B blood are frequently recruited for the automated donation process. Both blood types are in high demand, with type O

WOODROW Wilcox On July 16, 2013, a retired woman who speaks Polish more than English visited our office to get my help with a Medicare Part D (prescription drugs) Late Enrollment Penalty (L.E.P.) which was charged to her wrongfully. The woman lives in Chesterton. When a senior citizen does not have some kind of prescription drug coverage that meets Medicare standards, the government punishes the senior citizen with a Late Enrollment Penalty (L.E.P.) Similar punishments are in the “Obamacare” law for others. The language problem (English and Polish) made matters worse. The client responded to the letter from her insurance company which told her of the penalty and asked her to send proof of coverage. She completed and sent the response form. But, the insurance company said that it did not get the response form in time. So, today, I helped the client file a complaint with Medicare about being unfairly charged a Late Enrollment Penalty when she did not deserve it. On Saturday, July 13th, the South Holland Recreational Services Department hosted “Head in the Right Direction” a concussion awareness seminar, to inform the community of the many signs and symptoms related to concussions. The goal of this seminar was to inform that while a concussion is a serious injury, with proper education and knowledge, you can greatly reduce any long term side effects. A panel of experts were assembled to address many different aspects of head injuries. Former Chicago Bear Otis Wilson discussed an athlete’s point of view. Dr. Pieroth from Northshore Neurological Institute discussed what exactly is a concussion. First responders from the South Holland police and fire department addressed what they look for when they respond to an emergency call. Dr. Tho Hang from Laurie Children’s Hospital discussed what happens in the emergency room when someone is suspected to have a concussion. Dr. Timothy

McManus from Ingalls Hospital discussed what happens after a concussion is diagnosed. Patrick Becker of Athletico discussed rehab and recovery, post concussion. Two student athletes, Alea Crowley, a high school cheerleader and advocate for Play It Safe Program and Josh Hunter, a college football player gave current young athletes points of view. And the seminar was wrapped up by Dr. Gregory Primus also formerly of the Chicago Bears who was able to give insight from both and athlete and a physician’s point of view. There were approximately 150 in attendance, both adults and children, to listen to these experts and gain knowledge on what to look for and what to do if you suspect someone has a concussion. There were a number of vendor booths to visit to gain information and raffles for great prizes. The seminar finished with a cookout lunch, complimentary chair massages and various children’s activities.

According to the FBI, senior citizens are often a target of scams. One reason is because senior citizens are most likely to have a “nest egg,” to own their home, and/ or to have excellent credit—all of which make them attractive to con artists. Reverse Mortgage Scams The FBI urges consumers, especially senior citizens, to be vigilant when seeking reverse mortgage products. Reverse mortgages, also known as home equity conversion mortgages (HECM), have increased more than 1,300 percent between 1999 and 2008, creating significant opportunities for fraud perpetrators. Reverse mortgage scams are engineered by unscrupulous professionals in a multitude of real estate, financial services, and related companies to steal the equity from the property of unsuspecting senior citizens or to use these seniors to unwittingly aid the fraudsters in stealing equity from a flipped property. In many of the reported scams, victim seniors are offered free homes, investment opportunities, and foreclosure or refinance assistance. They are also used as straw buyers in property flipping scams. mike buder Are you still holding off buying a home to live in or an investment property because you feel that real estate prices are still in decline? Well I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. “MARKET BOTTOMS ARE ONLY EASY TO IDENTIFY ONCE THEY’VE HAPPENED”. Look at the stock market. Take a look at a 5 year chart of the DOW, NASDAQ, S&P 500 or most individual stocks and you will see that most of them hit their 5 year low on March 5th of 2009. Did you buy thousands of dollars worth of stocks on March 5th? If you did, you probably easily doubled or tripled your money in the following 6 months. What’s that? You didn’t buy stocks on March 5, 2009? But that was the market bottom! Why on earth didn’t you buy? What’s wrong with you? I can’t believe you were sitting at your computer with your Ameritrade account open, and you did not pull the trigger. This is why waiting for a market bottom just does not work. Because when they happen, there is too much fear in the market to encourage buying. What is true for the stock market is also true of the housing market. Market bottoms sound great in theory, but they are just too hard to identify while they’re happening. There are no bells, whistles or fireworks that go off. Instead of looking for

an identifiable bottom, I believe that we are certainly right now in the “market bottom range” and that movements to either side of this current point are going to be prevalent. This is why we will see positive housing numbers one quarter, and negative housing numbers the next. We are in a sideways market and I’d suggest we’re in a market bottom range that we’ll stay in for another year or so. As long as foreclosed properties dominate the sales statistics, we will not see a true recovery towards a “normal market”. So if you need fundamentals to buy, realize that interest rates are very low and inventory is very high. Realize that whether or not the market creates an identifiable bottom you’re not going to know when it hits. And last but not least way too many opportunities have already been wasted worrying about 5% market swings. So get out and buy that property! How to settle a debt for less than you owe arthur v. veal iv In our rent to own program we teach our tenants how to repair their own credit. That way they know how to protect their credit after they purchase one of our homes. In helping families, I sometimes hear questions that are very common about credit. This week I want to address how to settle a debt for less than you owe as this is a common question. If you have a lot of debts to settle then you have many options. Budget a certain amount of cash each month to put toward debt reduction. For this example lets say you commit 300 per month. After you have accumulated your first 300, get a list of your debts and call each one letting them know you have 300 available to settle your debt. If that creditor refuses to settle for that amount then move onto the next creditor until one of your creditors agrees. In my opinion it is best to start with your oldest debts first because they are most eager to settle before their statute of limitations expires. If none of your

creditors will accept your amount then wait until next month when you have more money and make the same round of calls. You may negotiate with each creditor, you can play it by ear. Just remember to get a letter of satisfaction from any creditor you pay so there is no confusion that you are settling the debt and not just making a payment. You need to pay by check so that you get the canceled check back verifying payment was received. Finally, once debts are settled contact the credit bureaus and verify that the debts show as settled, if not dispute the debt off your credit. Using these tips you can usually settle debts for anywhere from a 30% to 90% discount. Until next week... Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE alice DEVRIES “Brush up, Brush up, Brush up, Get the new Ipana…” Bucky Beaver sings. Anyone remember this toothpaste commercial? I’m on my summer family vacation in Wisconsin Dells. After a full morning of boating, we took a break for hot dogs and macaroni & cheese while catching part of the movie “Grease” on TV. That movie never seems to get old, but then again, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the full movie in one sitting. The old Ipana toothpaste commercial made an appearance in “Grease” with Jan singing in her pajamas along with Bucky Beaver on TV. But before Bucky Beaver landed the commercial for Ipana, and Jan was probably still in diapers, Ipana toothpaste was working hard to brighten the teeth of our soldiers during WWII. Sgt. Robert Buetow, part of the 54th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, Spearhead Division, i n WWI I , used I pa na toothpaste. He mentions it in this letter to his wife: Monday, April 23, 1945 Lu dearest, No mail from you since the last time I wrote, which was several days ago, but I’m sure there’s some on the

way to me. I’ll most likely get several letters all on the same day. I’m lonelier than ever for you when I don’t receive any mail, darling, but of course I realize that can’t be helped. Did you ever receive the two bonds that were missing? I imagine that’s all been straightened out by now. Mommy darling, in the next package you send me please include some Ipana tooth-paste ‘cause my supply is running low. Cockerell explains that it’s the people that make the magic after all. Here are keys from three of the leadership strategies. F i r s t , “ E v e r yo n e i s important.” Know your team; the people you work with, and people you see every day. Treat them with respect. Listen when they speak, so you can understand them. Interact with them the way you’d like them to interact with your customers. When you sow good seed of genuine interest, respect, and professionalism, it’s likely you will reap the harvest of that investment in return. Next, “Make people your brand.” Be known for how your employees/ organization members work with customers. When hiring, look for

those who are smarter and more talented than you! That’s right, get people around you who you trust will work well for you and make you and your company look great. Check out candidates personally, and find out what really matters to them. Don’t settle for mediocrity when hiring. Remember, those who represent you and your company will create “magic” with your customers every day. Finally, “Stay ahead of the pack.” You ought to keep learning in your field, and lead your team to do the same so you’re on the cutting edge. Notice those who you consider to be the best in the field—what are they doing, and why? What are your competitors doing, and why? Keep up with your customer base— what do they want/need/ ask for regularly? Can you anticipate what the next opportunity for growth will be? Answer these questions often. STATE REP. MARCUS EVANS TALKS TO LANSINGITES: Freshman State Rep. Marcus C. Evans, Jr. (33rd) visited with Lansing residents last Wednesday July 17th, 2013 in the lower level of the Lansing Library for one of his “coffee and conversation” addresses and spoke to the 25 or so gathered there about what was happening in Springfield and what was important to Lansing residents. Among the ‘hot topics’ addressed by Evans, a self addressed far left leaning Democrat, were Pension Reform, Conceal Carry, Health Care Reform, Protecting homeowners HB 2905 ‘Clouding Title.” He was dismayed over the lack of action on the part of the legislature over the failure to resolve the state’s pension underfunding crisis, noting that everyday that goes by without a solution, costs taxpayers $millions. As for conceal carry, he noted that he is not for private ownership of guns at all, but recognizes and respects the 2nd Amendment’s right to bear arms and signed off on the sanitized version that passed in the legislature. One of the audience members, Steve Kasper, a CC advocate commented on the pros of the ordinance. Health care reform speaks for itself, “It must be fair and it must be equitable,” Marcus noted. And a new ‘scam’ blighting those with paid up mortgages is the “Clouding Title” caper where someone with a paid up mortgage has his or her identity stolen via the County Recorder of Deeds and that mortgage used by the scam artist. “The City of Chicago Treasurer had this just happen to her,” Marcus warned, “so if your mortgage is paid, check your deed from time to time to make sure no one has stolen it.” Marcus said this does not happen to people who have mortgages because the mortgage company would be in touch with you, “but say, Grandma’s house has been paid off for 40 years, that would be attractive to these scam artists.” Other topics included the proposed Peotone Airport and the Lansing Airport leasehold tax. `Marcus email is repevans33@gmail.com and his website is www.staterepevans33.com if you want to contact him, which he encourages! *** NEXT WEEKEND: ST VICTOR FEST AND PIEROGI FEST: Wow, two great summertime treats over a single weekend.
