Runners and walkers, as well as their pooches, are invited to hit the pavement as Humane Society Calumet Area (HSCA) and Lan-Oak Park District host the sixth annual Spay the Stray 5K Run/Walk on Sept. 10 in Lansing, Ill. The race begins at 9 a.m. at Eisenhower Center, 2550 178th St., Lansing, Ill. The fast a nd f lat course t ravels t hroug h a quiet neighborhood. All ages are welcome to participate. Proceeds benefit spay and neuter surgeries performed at HSCA’s Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic. New this year, leashed dogs are welcome to participate in the 5K run/ walk and walkers can choose whether they would like their walk timed. Registration takes place from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. and an awards ceremony follows the race. Awards will be presented to the top three runners in each age group, the overall

Like Light Through a Prism ANNA M. CAISON

Whenever I see a prism I’m reminded of two things. One, I’m reminded of the marvel of childhood delightfully expressed through a young orphan named Pollyanna in the 1960 Disney movie, “Pollyanna.” After the death of her missionary parents, Polly is sent to live with her mother’s sister for whom Polly is named after. The entire town, including the church is under the control of Polly’s wealthy aunt. This ma kes for a ver y bitter a nd gr umpy town. Polly meets a young boy from the town orphanage and follows him to a house where an old retired professor lives. In the course of the commotion of trespassing on private property and being caught by Professor Pendergrass, Pol l y d i s c over s a n a m a z i ng t h i ng about the cr ysta ls hanging from the professor’s lamp. She learns that when the crystals are hung in sunlight they act like a prism reflecting the colors of the rainbow. Polly’s child-like fascination with refracted light has a powerful effect on the cranky professor and later, on the widowed cantankerous Mrs. Snow. They both are transformed into cheerful, outgoing and pleasant people.

T he second t h i ng I’m rem i nded of when I see a prism is how God uses science to teach us about Himself and us. What color is light? White, of course! But when light passes through a prism it separates into a rainbow of colors. So what color is light? The color of the rainbow! The Bible tells us that from Adam and Eve came all the people on the face of the earth. The various shades of humanity; black, brown, white, cream, came from the shade of one couple. W hat color was Adam and Eve? Given the possible location of the Garden of Eden, they probably were black skinned. God is Light (1 John 1:5), and all of humanity is created in His image. What color is His image? Just look around you! All the shades of humanity are the refracted colors of His Light. If we would become like children and process this truth with child-like faith, we could cross off racism on our list of sin to overcome. And second, by saving and investing for retirement early in your career, you w ill likely need to put away less money each year than you would if you wa ited u nt i l, say, your 40s or 50s. And increase your contributions every time your salary rises. • Not saving enough for emergency expenses – You can’t plan for all expenses. Hungry Hound Boutique is located on Wicker Avenue just across the h ig hw ay f rom L a ke Cent ra l High School. It’s a wonderful pet parent friendly place that invites leashed and carried pets inside. This is the second time around for us to take our dog’s to the facilities. Our 7 year old Bishon Frosty was in class there at 4 months and he truly learned to be a gentleman (gentledog) both on a leash and off responding to certain commands. As you can see in this picture, Christmas i s bei ng t a ken t h roug h h i s paces by Megan as Christmas’ ‘classmates’ and their pet parents look on. *** PETE MATRENEC OF LANSING ON THE MEND AT LOYOLA: Out of Intensive Care and in a regular room now, the popular veteran, a member of t he A mer ic a n Leg ion 697 a nd t he La nsing Veteran’s Memorial Ceremonial Honor Gua rd is on t he way toward recovery. Pete was badly injured in an auto accident in Dyer, Indiana on July 8th when the motorcycle he was driving was involved with a car. Pete was airlifted to Loyola Hospital where he has been ever since. He endured a 14 hour surgery on his leg last week, but the gifted and wonderful surgeon saved Pete’s leg. He is now in a regular room and convalescing nicely but will have to go to lots of therapy to get him back to tip top! Thanks to Rich Dominiak for the updates on Pete.
