Patti Komara, gymnastics expert and President of Patti’s All-American in Dyer, will be speaking in August at the USA Gymnastics National Convention in Indianapolis, IN which is attended by over 2600 gymnastics school owners, teachers, judges, and vendors. Patti’s topics include “Creating Spectacular Preschool and School-Age Programs” and “Time Management”. She will also speak about her internationally known programs such as her Tumblebear Gym, CheerBears, Dancing GymBears, and Gym-N-Learn, a fitness-based educational preschool. The students of art and photography classes at Purdue University Calumet gained knowledge from a different perspective as they returned from their non-traditional classes in Paris. Four classes revolv ing around photography, advanced techniques and art appreciation traveled to Paris to study and visit several cultural locations. E r i n L a i n, a g r a du at e s t udent i n t he Communicat ion a nd Creat ive A r ts department at Purdue University Calumet fo c u si ng on r hetor ic a nd non-pr of it organizations, was required to teach as part of her Teaching Photography class for her graduate program. “I loved doing t he resea rch for t he lessons I taught,” Lain said. “Learning about the different techniques some of the photographers used was very educational.” L a i n sa id t he g roup v i site d ma ny museu ms such as T he Louv re, Cent re Pompidou, which houses the largest public library in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art, the Musee D’Orsay and the Rodin and Picasso museums. She said it was at the smaller art galleries and museums where she taught lessons on photography. Haley Smith, a junior who is a visual communication major and public relations minor, said the group was submerged in the culture in every way. Smith said she

learned about the historical cities in Europe, especially France. Thomas Roach, the department head of the Communication and Creative Arts department at Purdue University Calumet and the instructor on the Paris trip, said Paris is an old well-preserved city that has its own medieval roots. “There is no better place to study art appreciation,” Roach said. W hi le t here, t he g roup was able to experience different cultural activities. Lain said one day they woke up at 4 a.m. to travel to the Eiffel Tower to see the sun rise. She also said the group visited the catacombs of Paris, which are series of tunnels that act as a tomb for more than 6 million people. She said the walls were covered with skeletons that were perfectly placed. She said it was a little creepy but mostly amazing. The group was also there to see the padlocks taken down from the Pont des Arts. The locks were symbols of love for couples where they would attach the lock to the bridges grillwork and toss the keys. Roach said thousands of locks were taken down because of the fear of damaging the bridges. On the trip, the students discovered and learned many things. Lain said being able to recognize her own progress was one of her favorite parts of the trip.

Phantom has some of the most memorable songs to ever come off of Broadway like “Music of t he Nig ht”, “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again”, “Phantom of t he Opera”, “Point of no Ret u r n”, a nd “Masquerade”. Mer r i l lv i l le premiered this production in March of 2011and is proud to bring it back for a su m mer product ion i n 2015 with an all new cast. If you want to see Phantom this summer you would have to find the national tour or one of the three amateur locations in the US producing the show, one of those at Merrillville High School’s Reinhart Auditorium. W hile t he cast, crew and chorus number over 100 strong has to be high School students, this

is no watered dow n score it is the same score and script used by all the professionals. This is also no watered down production as it features a 25 piece Orchestra, 32 cordless Mics, special effects including the famous Chandelier effect, and some of the most lav ish, extravagant sets, and projections ever seen on any loca l stage. The late Jerr y Reinhart did some of these set designs in 2011and we have just added to those, including things he said he wished he would’ve had time to . Hammer Toes

Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. LARC to hold Golf Outing L A RC , a n o n-p r o f i t o r g a n i z a t i o n t hat prov ides ser v ices to people w it h developmental disabilities, will hold its 18th annual golf outing, Monday, August 3, 2015, at Lincolnshire Country Club in Crete, IL. The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. with registration. At 11:30 am all you care to eat buffet lunch will be served and the putting contest where $10,000.00 can be won starts ($5,000.00 to the putter and $5,000.00 to LARC). 18 holes of golf begin at 1:00 with a shot gun start and complimentary beverages available through the whole round. After every golfer is off the course, a cocktail (2) hour takes place including another all you care to eat buffet dinner featuring beef and pork carving stations. Our outing’s newest game, a skins game, will again be adding additional excitement to the game. Tickets for this full day of events remain only $150.00 per person, which is tax deductible. Medicare Claims Crossover Did Not Work WOODROW WILCOX On Ju ly 20, 2015, I i nvest igated a med ica l bill problem for a senior c it i z en f rom Mu n ster, Indiana. A hospital in Illinois was bi l ling her for substa nt ia l ba la nces re ga rd i ng s er v ic e s on two dates. She did not u nder st a nd w hy si nce she bought a ver y good Me d i c a r e s u pp l e m e nt policy. I lea r ned t hat t he Med ic a re crossover of claims did not work. That is t he system in which Med ic a re repor t s it s findings to the Medicare supplement i n su r a nc e companies. Without the v it a l i n for mat ion, t he i nsu ra nce compa n ies don’t know about a claim to pay. For Date of Ser v ice 10/14/2014, the bill stated a total original charge of $1,305. But, Med ica re r e p o r t e d o n l y $ 1, 0 6 9 of t hat to t he cl ient ’s insurance company. For Date of Service 02/10/2015, t he bi l l st ated a tot a l original charge of $4,294. But, Medicare reported only $3,105 of that. To fix this problem, I w rote a let ter to t he hospital which explained this and requested that it send certain essential billing and claims information direct ly to

t he c l ie nt ’s Me d ic a r e supplement i n su r a nc e company. I gave the insurance company’s claims address. Then, I t ha n ked t he hospital for cooperating with us to make sure that a senior citizen does not have to pay more t ha n the proper amount just because someone in the Medicare system made a mistake. The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CH A RGE. The ow ners, managers, and staff of this i nsu ra nce agenc y ca re about our senior clients and we “go the extra mile” to pr ote c t t hem f r om f i na ncia l ha r m when somet h i ng goes w rong in the Medicare system. Does you r i nsu ra nce agent or agency give this high standard of service to senior citizen clients? If not, why not? A Light in the Midst of Chaos ANNA M. CAISON

At the time of this writing Illinois still hadn’t passed a State Budget. Regardless of what programs they cut back on or ser v ices they eliminate there’s going to be a lot of people left in limbo with nowhere to turn or go. As depressing as this thought might be there is a light in the middle of the chaos. That light is the church. Illinois’ financial woes are an opportunity for Christians to demonstrate God’s love in practical ways to those who will be affected by the cuts in social services. Within the church there are active and retired doctors, nurses, teachers, ad m i n ist rators, f i na ncia l pla n ners, busi ness ow ners, ent repreneu rs, homema kers, chi ld ca reg ivers, counselors, pastors, elders/deacons and laypersons who in conjunction with their expertise, can share the gospel of peace and salvation in a non-judgmental, full of grace format that will allow the Holy Spirit to minister to every soul it comes in contact with. And when local churches come together in partnership with God, not only will families be strengthen, but communities w ill be streng t hen and become conducive for economic revitalization.

Meeting a need mustn’t be a condition to joining our fellowship or accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior. In Jesus’ parable of the sower (farmer), the sower planted seeds on good soil and the not so good soil. We are admonished by scripture to do “good” to “all” men (women and children included). We, the church, the called out ones, the Body of Christ, the Household of Faith have the answer to all of life’s issues, both physical and spiritual. When we express God’s heart for humanit y in meeting physical needs we often gain an opportunity to share His heart in meeting spiritual needs that none should perish but enjoy everlasting life with Him. TOM LUBERDA AND GARY SINISE HIGHLIGHT LANSING VETERANS MEMORIAL: The guest of honor, Actor Gary Sinise, (he of “Lt Dan Band” fame and “Forest Gump”) and Lansing resident and Memorial founder Tom Luberda, are pictured together at the Sunday July 19th, 2015 gathering at the Lansing Memorial surrounded by veteran’s, families and friends of many local veteran’s organizations. Sinise presented the Lansing Memorial Foundation, with a check for $15,000 from the Gary Sinise Foundation. The donation is to go toward the upkeep of the memorial which Luberda founded over 20 years ago. Some 300 people turned out that day to share in the experience of veteran’s coming together in appreciation of their efforts and of those who share in praising them for those efforts. Gary Sinise is a longtime supporter of US Troops both in and out of the service all over the world and has a special fondness for Luberda as evidenced in his kind words that Sunday. *****

VIETNAM ERA TANK SETTLES IN HEGEWISCH AT BRAINARD AND BALTIMORE MEMORIAL: After 10 years of work, the Vietnam era tank finally arrived in the Hegewisch neighborhood of Chicago last week. Pictured here are newly installed 10th Ward Alderwoman Sue Sadlowski Garza and local Pudgy’s pizzeria owner Bob “Pudgy” Zajac of Dyer, In. The event was coordinated over the course of 10 years by locals Mike Aniol and Ed Jarmuska and then, now former Alderman John Pope with help from veteran’s groups like the PLAV and American Legion Post 272. The tank traveled from a base in the south and took several weeks to arrive, traveling thru the south suburbs. A Herculean effort was made by Local 63 Ironworkers Gerry, Sean and Matt among others to remove poles and pillars so the tank could be forklifted into place as onlookers marveled at the feat. It is to be de dedicated on Veteran’s Day November 7th 2015 after a bit of spiffing up. Patriotism is high in Hegewisch and the community as a whole is grateful for this new and wonderful addition to the evolving Memorial there. *****
