I know from experience t hat more a nd more drivers are texting while driving. You can just tell. They think that driving 5 miles below the speed limit will give them the ex t r a t i me to read or write a text - and no one will ever know. What they hope no one else notices is that they drift out of their lane, slam on their brakes at the last minute, and sit at the stop light long after it has turned green. A New Jersey town is tired of people texting while driving – and while wa lk ing. Fort Lee New Jersey has had 3 fatalities t hat were caused by p e op l e t e x t i n g w h i l e crossing the street. I’m guessing that they forgot t he i r p a r e nt ’s a d v ic e to look both ways. Fort Lee, N.J. police said they w i l l beg in issuing $ 85

t icket s to pedest r ia n s who are caught texting while walking. Perhaps the pedestrians in New Jersey don’t rea lize a ll the features of their fancy tex t i ng mach i nes. T he new features of electronic gadgets are hard to keep up with after all. Maybe t he y don’t k now t h at t hei r tex t i ng mach i ne has a great feature, they can press a single button or tap the screen once, hold it up to their ear, and actually talk to the person on the other end. That way they can keep both eyes on the sidewalk in front of them. Anyway, I hope it helps keep people safer in New Jersey – I’m just not sure you can cure stupid with an $85 ticket. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher a nd big fan of texting while stationary.

Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Life & Relationships DEE COLLINS Dear Dee: I am an entrepreneur who is working hard to live out my dreams. I have lost the comradery of many friends because I don’t have the time or discretionary income anymore to hang out with them. I think I may also be a tad bit jealous because it seems that they have time to do whatever they want. My desire is to reach my dreams. How do I not feel bad about not being able to do what I used to do?

true friends are at the top, because they can handle the altitude. I am honored to have answered this great woman’s heart, and desire to hear yours. In our society, we as men and women are facing so many challenges in life and relationships of all kinds. So many people have a desire to live beyond their present norm, but don’t want to put in the work it requires. Your dreams are worth every bit of you! The true meaning of life is being negated, which is to build a life for a legacy. It’s time for every Great Man and Woman to think beyond their present circumstances, and make sacrifices to est ablis h wholesome relations hips while remaining united and fixated on a purpose-driven life. No longer allow our future generation of leaders to live in a decadent state of mind that leads to more poverty and destruction. Dear Dream Catcher: First and foremost, I admire you for being concerned about relationships beyond intimacy. However, having wholesome camaraderie with friends is a form of intimacy. As an entrepreneur, I understand your plight. Your dreams are attainable, and it’s the dearest things to your heart and soul that serves as a major sacrifice in order for your dreams to be obtained, which is time and money. During your process you must continuously make this kind of choice, and you never know what your journey entails. It sounds like you are adamant to live your life-long dreams, so stay encouraged and you will see the reward of your various sacrifices. Remember, your

GOD WITH US

Like Me! ANNA M. CAISON I se e m to be stuc k ( or maybe mesmerized would be a better word) by the passage of scripture recorded in Hebrews 2:14-15, 17. I sense there’s something more the Lord wants me to see. At times I feel like I’m at the edge of grasping it, only to realize that I still don’t know what it is I’m trying to see! As I continued to meditate on this text I was reminded of an old movie I watched on TV many years ago. It didn’t seem important then, and I wasn’t sure if it was a true story or not, but it intrigued me now as it related to the human perspective of what I was trying to understand from Hebrews. My google search led me to the film in question. And yes, it was a true story. I by passed the streamed movie version with its commercial interruptions every 5 minutes, and purchased the Kindle format of the book that the movie was based on ; the personal journal experience of John Howard Griffin: “Black Like Me.” Af ter reading two contradicting reports about the black community Griffin realized that as a “race specialist” he knew little to nothing about being black in America. The only way to understand blacks, he reasoned, is to walk

in their shoes. So he undergoes treatment that allowed him to travel through the segregated south (1959-60) as a black man. The atrocities he experienced were so horrifying that when he saw his black image in the mirror he felt self-hatred, despair, and hopelessness. When he recovered from his ordeal he used what he had experienced to fervently fight for racial equality and to dispel the negative myth that blacks were inferior to whites. God, in the person of Jesus, came in the likeness of man. His identification with us wasn’t to understand us, it was to deliver us from sin and death by sacrificing His sinless life in exchange for ours. Our value in society is not based on our race or ethnicity, it’s in our relationship with God in whose image we’re created in. In Christ there is no hierarchy of class or race; both rich and poor, male and female, Jew and Gentile (Black and White) ---all are one in Him. The mission of the church is clear: to identify with fallen humanity and lead them to faith in Christ. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . A Season of Southland Premieres and Fan Favorites at GSU’s Center for Performing Arts GSU’s Center for Performing Arts’ 2016-17 season lineup brings a mix of fresh, fun, and nostalgic programs, showcasing fan favorites like blues prodigy Jamiah Rogers, and Chicago Southland premieres by Porchlight Music Theatre, Chicago Dance Crash, and Chicago Jazz Philharmonic. “I hope this season will attract a variety of arts appreciators in the Southland,” says Executive Director, Lana Rogachevskaya. “We have an eclectic mix of performances, from soulful blues, opera, and provocative theatre to street dance and family programs; and the best part is, it’s all affordable and close to home. This year, your Center has expanded access—access to the artists, to affordable ticket prices, and to genres often overlooked by more commercial venues.” Enjoy a new view of the arts as you sit on the stage with the artists in one of many “on stage experiences.” Where else can you sit on the stage at a theatre in Chicago? MIKE BUDER Planning to sleep in your new home tonight… what’s Plan B? It’s closing day! Everything has gone like clockwork and you have nothing but the closing between you and home ownership! T H E P L A N : Yo u’l l spend an hour at the title company signing all the closing documents and then receive the keys to your new kingdom. You’ll head straight to your new home with a loaded moving truck already in the driveway and a dozen friends and family there ready to move you in. REALITY: The phone rings just hours before closing. The underwriters have been doing their f i n a l p e r u s a l s be f o re issuing the closing package. They have hit a snag. (I’ll leave it at that… the form those snags can take in this new world for lending is unpredictable). Your loan officer assures you that it will be worked out. But…your closing is going to be delayed! A couple of hours? Maybe. A full day or even two? Possibly. PL AN B : First, lets talk about what Plan B is not. It is not you will call your agent and ask them to get you the keys so you c an move in any way. The seller would have tremendous insurance liability and legal risks to allow such a move without a special agreement and a special insurance endorsement in place

prior to the move in. Since you did not close, your homeowner’s policy is not in effect. A BET TER PL AN B : Give yourself a buffer of at least a day between closing and moving in. If you want to move in on the weekend don’t set your closing on Friday, because if things go south you will be waiting until Monday to close. If you absolutely must move in on your scheduled closing day, negotiate ahead of time through your agent, exactly what will happen if your closing is delayed. Keep in mind, the seller is not required to give you occupancy until you own the home. Above all, understand that some things are simply out of the hands of even the best lenders, agents and attorneys. Plan B may not necessarily be your ideal, but it is always better than the alternative… especially if you don’t have one!

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: After taking the last walkthrough tour I closed on my house. Everything seemed fine. All the upgraded appliances (Stove/oven, Microwave and Dishwasher) were installed. I was handed the keys to the house the next day at about 4 PM. I did not go to inspect the house on the day of settlement but the next day when I went to the house at about 6.30 PM all the appliances (stove/oven, microwave and dishwasher) were gone from the house. I filed a police report. The officer inspected the house and found out that there was no sign of a break-in, no windows were broken or unlocked and all the locks were intact. He made a report but also suggested that I talk to the builder. So the next day I went and talked to the builder at the office. He simply told me he did not have any key to the house and its bad luck that all the appliances are stolen. What can I do?

Answer: The problem here is that buyers are best ser ved with a pre - closing

inspection right before settlement -minutes before if possible. Had such an inspection taken place it would have been the builder’s responsibility to deliver any missing appliances. In this situation it is likely that you have homeowner’s insurance to cover such events so speak with your insurance provider. You should have serial numbers from the builder that can be provided to the insurance company. You are plainly the victim of a crime. Before going further ask the police to check the property for fingerprints and other evidence. Also, ask if there have there been similar incidents in the new home community where you bought or at other new home properties. (Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. LM

Investing: A Marathon, Not a Sprint BOB KRYGSHELD T h is week, t he 2016 Summer Olympics begin in Rio de Janeiro. One of t h e m o s t c om p e l l i n g events is the marathon, a 26.2-mi le endura nce contest with roots dating back to ancient Greece. It may be that we’ve kept our interest in the marathon because it can teach us much about life – and it certainly has lessons for investors. In fact, if you were to compare investing to an Olympic sport, it would be much closer to a marathon than a sprint. Here’s why: • L ong-ter m perspective – Sprinters are unquestionably great athletes, and they work ha rd to get better. Yet their events are over with quickly. But marathoners k now they have a long way to go before their race is done, so they have to visualize the end point. And successful investors, too, know that investing is a long-term endeavor, and that they must picture their end results – such as a comfortable retirement – to ke ep t hem selve s motivated. • St e a d y p a c i n g – Sprinters go all out, every second and every stride. But ma rat honers have to pace themselves – too ma ny spu r t s of speed could tire them out and doom their performance. As an investor, you, too, should strive for steady, consistent prog ress. Rather than attempting to r ush success a nd a c h ie v e big g a i n s b y chasing after supposedly “hot ” stock s – w h ich may already have cooled off by the time you hear about them – try to follow a long-term strategy that emphasizes diversification a mong ma ny dif ferent i nvest ment s. (Keep i n mind, though, that while diversification can reduce t he i mpac t of ma rket downturns that primarily affect one type of asset, it can’t guarantee success or prevent all losses.) • Ability to overcome

obstacles – When sprinters stumble or fall, they are f i n ished for t he race ; there’s simply not enough time to recover, so they typically just stop. But over 26 miles, a marathoner can fall and – providing he or she is not injured – get up aga in, compete and possibly even win. W hen you’re invest ing for t he long term, you have time to overcome “mishaps” in t he form of market volatility. So instead of dropping out of the “race” and heading to the investment sidelines, stay invested in all types of markets. As you near retirement, and you have less time to recover from market downturns, you may need to adjust your portfolio to lower your risk level – but even then, you don’t need to call it quits as an investor. • P r op er f uel i ng – Sprinters have to watch what they eat. But worldclass marathoners have to be ultra-diligent about their diets, especially in the period immediately preceding a race. Because they must maximize the oxygen their bodies can use while running, they need a high percentage of their calories to come f rom ca rbohyd rates, s o t h e y “c a r b o -lo a d” when needed. When you i nvest, you a l so need to periodically “refuel” your portfolio so it has the energy and stamina needed to keep you moving forward toward y ou r goa l s . A nd t h at me a n s y ou mu st add dol la rs to t hose a reas of you r por t fol io t hat need beefing up. Regular reviews with a financial professional can reveal where these gaps exist. As an investor, you can learn a lot from Olympic marathoners – so put this knowledge to good use.
