The King’s Boulder ARLO KALLEMEYN In a ncient t i mes, a K i ng had a bou lder pl ac e d on a r oad w ay. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the King’s’ wealthiest merchants and cou r t iers ca me by a nd simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. T hen a pe a s a nt c a me a long c a r r y i ng a load of v e g e t a b l e s . Up on approaching the boulder, t he peasa nt la id dow n his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing a nd st ra ining,

he f i n a l l y s uc c e e de d . After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying i n t he road where t he bou lder had been. The pu rse conta i ned ma ny gold coi ns a nd a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. Medicare System Makes Fraud Easy WOODROW WILCOX My job is to help senior c it i z en s w it h me d ic a l bill problems that were caused by mistakes in the Medicare system. I do my job well. O n Ju l y 17, 2015, I re c eive d a phone c a l l from a client asking why he got a statement from his insurance company that it had paid a claim to a hospital when he had not gone to a hospital. I asked him to send me the document. W hen I got t he i n s u r a n c e c o m p a n y ’s explanation of benef its form, I learned that the claim was filed for services rendered at Jack son County Schneck Memorial Hospital in Crown Point, Indiana. That hospita l is not in Crow n Point. Crow n Point is in La ke County about 200 miles f r om t h at ho s pit a l i n Seymour, Jackson County, Indiana. I know where Seymour is. I go there for family reunions. Some of my cousins were elected to office in Jackson County. I investigated further a nd le a r ne d t h a t t he address in Crown Point which was used in t he claim for the hospital is the address of a residence – not a hospital or other medical facility. B u t , Medicare processed t he claim as though it were legitimate. Ou r cl ient’s i nsu ra nce compa ny pa id $ 4 47.54 t hat it should not have p a id . Me d ic a r e p a id $1,789.94 on t h is fa lse claim. Because of this fa lse cla i m, i nsu ra nce customers will pay higher premiums and tax payers will pay more taxes. W hen I phoned Med ica re to get t he correct address to send

a let ter to a ler t t he gover n ment t hat t here was a strong possibility of fraud in this matter, the Medicare representative – who said her name was “Kay” – hung up on me. I just cou ld not let t h is go. I just had to report this. I found the address of the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services. I’ll be typing a letter to that office. If t he Medica re s y stem were de sig ne d wel l, t he fa lse add ress in Lake County, Indiana for a hospital in Jackson County, Indiana should have shut down the claim with the false information and prevented the federal gover n ment a nd t he insurance company from pay i ng a ny t h i ng u nt i l t he i n for mat ion wa s corrected. In our present Medicare system, it is just too easy to defraud the federal government and i n su r a nc e c ompa n ie s. W hen t hat happens, i n noc ent c it i z en s pay h ig her prem iu m s a nd higher taxes. W hether you believe this false Medicare claim was caused by fraud or incompetence and error, one thing is clear: THE MEDIC A R E SYSTEM MAKES FRAUD EASY. Thornton Township High School D205 Taps Jerry B. Doss

arlok@myshopper.biz The newly elected District 205 School Board is in the process of putting the pieces in place to prepare the high school district for a new academic school year. District 205 includes Thornwood, Thornton and Thornridge High Schools. Much of the human resource work in a school district is done over the summer months - to prepare for the new school year. On Tuesday July 28, the Board of Education promoted Jerry B. Doss to the position of Director of Human Resources and Community Relations. Previously Doss was the Director of Community Relations overseeing the public relations, marketing and communication from District 205 to the surrounding community. While in his community relations role, Doss was instrumental in raising awareness regarding the many positive aspects of our three local high schools. A popular method of communication is the ‘Your Schools’ magazine that informs the community about important district news such as student programs, faculty, finance, and capital improvements to the school campuses. Under Doss’ direction the District 205 website was completely revamped. The community is welcome to view the updated website at www.district205.net for late breaking news and district updates. Doss has a history of getting involved in organizations that make a difference. Jerry serves on the South Regional Advisory Board of Catholic Charities - located in Seton High School in South Holland. This office of Catholic Charities serves those in need from 31 south suburban Chicagoland communities. This regional office provides food, clothing, counseling, emergency funding, and access to all Catholic Charities assistance programs. Jerry remarked, “Catholic Charities helps people in need from all faiths. It is rewarding to serve, and to provide assistance to those who are struggling on a day-to-day basis.” Jerry was also recently installed as a South Holland Business Association Board (SHBA) member and said, “I look forward to partnering with the surrounding business community. A strong business district results in a healthy school district.” Doss also serves as Executive Director of the District 205 Academic Enrichment Foundation. The purpose of the Foundation is to enhance educational opportunities for District 205 students. The Foundation provides grants to teachers at the 3 high schools to encourage teacher and staff creativity, and to promote the school district as a center for parent involvement and community learning. A popular program that the foundation supports is the United Nations Summer Leadership Academy. This one of a kind program was created to provide middle school students with a globally-based experience that develops critical thinking skills; Jerry B. PSC Offering Free Classes The Adult Education Program at Prairie State College (PSC) is offering free English as a Second Language (ESL), General Education (GED®) and Spanish GED Preparation, beginning Monday, Aug. 31, at the PSC Adult Training and Outreach Center (ATOC), located on the main campus at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights. Registration dates for GED classes are at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 10 and Tuesday, Aug. 11. When he had divided the people into two groups, he returned to his place at the entrance gate to the kingdom. To the group on his right the King says, “When I was hungry you fed me, when I was thirsty you gave me something to drink, when I was an out of town visitor you showed me hospitality, when I was naked you gave me clothes, when I was sick you visited and cared for me until I recovered, and when I was incarcerated, you came to see me. The South Suburban College non-credit Basic Nurse Assistant Training Program (CNA) is running a daytime cohort session from August 10th through October 1st at the Oak Forest Center. Successful completion of this non-credit course is required in order to become eligible to take the State of Illinois Nursing Assistant Certification Examination–SSC offers more contact hours for training than traditional CNA programs a long w ith an additiona l free refresher course prior to this critical certification exam. Inst r uct ion i ncludes ba sic nu rsi ng skills through lecture, campus laboratory and supervised clinical experiences at a long-term health care facility. Consider if there is any advantage in turning your mistake into some sort of advantage, as t he inventors of t he aforementioned products did, as I am doing with t h i s w r it i n g . B e s u r e to fol low t hrough w it h ac t ion steps fol low i ng your eureka prog nosis. How many times have you had really great ideas and failed to follow through with the action required to bring your idea to fruition? If you want something to happen, action is required. Take Action to Leave the Legacy You Desire BOB KRYGSHELD August is What Will Be Your Legacy Month. What shou ld you do to help ensure you’ll leave the type of legacy you desire? To begin with, identify those people whom you’d like to direct ly benef it from your legacy. W hat can you leave behind to y ou r f a m i l y memb er s or even close f r iends ? Then, think about those charitable organizations you support — can you leave something behind to them? Once you have decided what your legacy should look like, you can ta ke steps to implement your idea s. Here a re a few suggestions: • Draw up your w ill. A will is probably the most essential legacy-related docu ment to ensu re t h a t y ou r a s s e t s a nd personal belongings will be distributed according to your wishes. If you die intestate (without a will), your belongings will be distributed to your “heirs” as defined by state laws — and these distributions may not be at all what you had in mind. • Consider a living trust. Depending on your situation, you may need to go further than a will. For example, you might want to create a liv ing t r ust, which ca n a llow your assets to go directly to your heirs, avoiding the public, time-consuming and potentially expensive proc e s s of probate. A living trust offers other benefits, too, so you may want to consult with a legal professional to learn more about this estate-planning tool. • Plan for your charitable gifts. To leave the legacy y ou h a v e e nv i s ione d , you m ig ht wa nt to do

more than provide your loved ones with needed financial resources — you may also want to provide lasting support to those charitable or educational orga n i zat ions whose work you admire. RICH AND JUDY CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF WEDDED BLISS: Richard and Judy Dominiak of Calumet City were feted at a Golden Wedding celebration at Tiebel’s Restaurant in Schererville, Indiana last week. Their actual anniversary date is July 31, 1965. They were married at St. George’s Church on Chicago’s East Side where both grew up and attended school. Rich walked Judy home from school, St. Francis de Sales High School, where they graduated in the Class of 1961. The couple are the parents of Richard, Joseph and Daniel and the grandparents of Katie, Krista, Natalie and Emily. Both are active in the community. Rich is a co-founder of the Lansing Veteran’s Memorial Honorary Color Guard and had previously played with the “Good Times Band” for many years. Judy worked at Goldblats in South Chicago and CNA Insurance in Downtown Chicago after high school. Judy

likes collecting Precious Moments figurines, dolls and spoons. Rich is a Vietnam Army Veteran and is a member of numerous veteran’s organizations. He worked at the old Republic Steel and LTV Steel and still meets with his former colleagues from time to time. The couple spend time with their children and grandchildren in addition to enjoying an active social life. Congratulations Rich and Judy--Long May They Love! ***
