Dogs and Men – A Comparison
ARLO KALLEMEYN We all like to compare certain things. Here we compare having a dog in your life as opposed to a man. Some people are doubly blessed - and have both. 1. D o g s d o n ot h a v e problems ex pressi ng affection in public. 2. Dogs miss you when you’re gone. 3. Dogs feel guilty when they’ve done something wrong. 4. Dogs ad m it when they’re jealous. 5. Dogs are ver y direct about wanting to go out. 6. Dogs do not play games with you -- except fetch (a nd t hey never laug h at how you throw. Hey ladies, we men just laugh lovingly at how adorable
you look when you throw... as long as it’s not a shoe.) 7. You can train a dog. 8. Dogs are easy to buy for. 9. The worst social disease you can get from dogs is fleas. ( OK , t he re a l l y w or st disease you can get from them is rabies, but there’s a vaccine for it and you can kill the one that gives it to you). 10. Dogs understand what “no” means. 11. Dogs mean it when they kiss you. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of man’s best friend even if they are somewhat better than men at some things.

DEE COLLINS Dear Dee: My daughter is going into her pre-teen stage and she is struggling with selfesteem (hair, body image, clothes, skin, etc.). What can I do as a mother to help her especially as I struggle with my own selfesteem? How can I be a good example, when I don’t a lways feel good about myself at the age of 42? Dear Mom: Congratulations ! You a re emba rk ing upon a great time in life; your daughter’s teenage years. These years are critical which means that her impaired selfesteem must be attended to with your help! No time for you to play the “victim.” Take these pre-teen years to affirm her as a beautiful young lady, and point out her inner and outer attributes defining that beauty. However, the forces that your daughter is encountering are designed to negatively impact her self-esteem stemming from external factors, which causes her to question herself. At school many pre-teens experience bully ing? Beware! So, your interaction with her is vital. As you bring enlightenment and encouragement to your daughter, please pay close attention to your own words, which will uplift your heart as well, and see yourself as a beautiful woman and mother. At this stage, communicating
with her as oppose to her is vital! Dee Spea k s…You T h i n k ! – About L i fe & Relationships Leadership within the home is very important. Our children need preparation in aim to effectively handle life challenges designed to impair self-esteem. However, broken relationships within the home, impairs a child’s self-esteem, because silently they blame themselves for an absentee parent. They ask themselves questions such as; “What’s wrong with me? ” Hearing this mother’s concerns reminds me of so many others who have not taken the time to attend to life matters more importantly than their material gains for survival. If our children are not emotionally stable, what can possibly be more life threatening! I admonish you to utilize this “Dear Dee” platform to privately address matters about life and relationships that will publicly impact your life in a wholesome manner. Great Man/Woman Where Art Thou? The silent cry of children’s hearts is desperately crying out to be heard through love and guidance. Contact Dee at 1-855-BE-DUNAMIS or email Dee so life and relationship concerns can be addressed through this column: deespeaksyouthink@dunamiswoman.com

MIKE BUDER You r e m ot ion a l attach ment to you r house can cost you big $$$. Our homes are very personal to us. Thinking of m y g r a nd m ot h e r ’s home brings wa rm happy feelings, as does my ch i ld hood home. A nd w hen I move t he next time, I’m sure I’ll be emotionally attached to my current home…it’s my wife’s and I first home together, the one where my children learned to walk, talk and write on the walls with permanent m a rker s. But w hen it comes time to sell, you have to move outside the feelings of your “home” and sell your “house”. I recent ly had a n experience w ith a t ra nsact ion where a d i v or c e w a s i nv ol v e d and it caused the sellers t o l it e r a l l y j u s t w a l k away from a house that h a d n’t b e e n pr op e r l y cleaned because it was too emotional for either party to do so. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay someone to do a job that you can’t do yourself. I can promise you that if you leave your home clea n t hen new buyers will appreciate it in their offer in the form of cash in your pocket. VFW Annual $30,000 Scholarship Competition St at e C om m a nder W. Da v e St out of the Veterans of Foreign Wars ( V FW ) Department of Illinois announced the kickoff of this year’s VFW’s Voice of Democracy Scholarship competition. Local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C. Students must write and record a threeto-five minute essay on the selected theme using an audio CD or flash drive and present their recording, typed essay and completed entr y form to t heir loca l V F W Post by November 1. The 2016-17 theme selected is “My Responsibility to America”. Students begin by competing at the local Post level w ith an entr y deadline of November 1. Post winners compete at the District level with the winner advancing to the state competition. All speeches are judged based on the sound recording submitted. All state first-place winners receive a four day trip to Washington, D.C. and the
chance to compete for their share of more than $150,000 in scholarships. The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 college scholarship. The National Association of Broadcasters (NA B) started t he Voice of Democracy Scholarship program in 1947. The V FW became a nationa l sponsor in t he late 1950s and assumed sole responsibility for the program in 1961. The competition was created to provide students grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves in regard to democratic ideas and principles. Around 40,000 students participate in the competition each year and VFW awards more than $2 million in scholarships every year. Interested students and teachers should contact the Voice of Democracy Chairman at their Local VFW Post or contact State VFW Headquarters at vfwil@vfwil.org for more information.

In the World… not of the World ANNA M. CAISON
This year’s presidential election has plunged me into more debates than I cared to be in. For me, neither candidate is desirable so the decision now is which is the lessor of two bad choices. Regardless of who wins the Oval Office, ultimately our hope rests in God. Sometimes we get so caught up in the things of this world that we forget that although we are in the world, we are not of the world. Government is a temporary s ol ut ion f or k e e pi n g or de r i n a n unregenerate society. We (Christians) are traveling Ambassadors of God’s Kingdom. Our mission is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, thereby persuading others to join us in becoming one of His followers. Each of us have been strategically placed to be His light in our community, place of business, where we attend school, where we shop, and in our relationships with family, friends and acquaintances. When we emulate God in the things we say and do, we change the atmosphere For sale: Down comforters size twin-king $25-$35; feather & down pillows $5$10; assorted throw pillows $2-$5 each. 708-481-6907
of our surroundings. We inspire hope a nd persevera nce in t hose who feel hopeless and defeated. We encourage others to follow our lead in show ing love, forgiveness, mercy and grace to those who are hurting and in need of God’s touch. And sometimes we stir up anger and insults from those who resist God’s presence in our life. But the joy we experience from those who come into relationship with Christ as a result of our lifestyle will outweigh the occasional rejection we encounter along the way. So brothers and sisters, don’t let the fear of the outcome of this election create anger and hostility in you toward those with political views that are different from yours. Lay your concerns about this election before the Lord and seek His guidance and His peace. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Dorothy Sutkowski of Munster, Indiana, will be honored at the evening game at Wrigley Field on August 16, 2016. Dorothy, who will be 94 in December, has followed the Cubs devotedly since the mid-1920s. Her mother would take her and her older sister on the train from Hammond to Wrigley Field for ladies day. Dorothy became such a fan that she has travelled for the past 10 or 15 years to Mesa, Arizona, to watch her beloved Cubs in spring training! With Dorothy, there was always the hope that this is the year that the Cubs will win the World Series! W hen asked who her favorite player is now, she quickly responded, “Anthony Rizzo ! ” W hen asked about her favorite players of the past, she called off their names as though they were old friends with whom she had kept in recent contact! Augie Galan (’34-’41), Stan Hack (’32-’47), and Phil Cavarretta (’34-’53) were names that she called off first. She spoke with enthusiasm

The Indiana Department of Insurance questioned the insurance company that issued the policy. T he a n s w er of t he insura nce compa ny for t he f a i lu re of t he Obamacare “On Exchange” policy to cover “preventative” ser v ices wa s ver y clea r a nd to the point. The hospital was using w rong codes a nd notes for ser v ices rendered which classified t h e s e r v i c e s a s NO T PR EV ENTATI V E. Since t he ser v ices were not preventative, the services were not covered by the “preventative ser v ices” promises of the insurance policy. In fact, the hospita l ref i led severa l t i mes
changing the codes and desc r ipt ion s. But, t he hospital personnel never filed the claim with the cor rect word i ng a nd cod i ng. So, ou r cl ient got stuck with a bill for $611.14. I s u g ge s t e d to t he client that he take all the papers to t he hospita l billing department and ask them to either file the claim correctly so that the filing would comply w it h t he “preventat ive ser v ices” r u les of t he Ob a m a c a r e p ol ic y or compromise and discount the bill so that he could pay a reduced a mount a nd be done w it h it. I believe that the client was d isappoi nted w it h h is Oba maca re policy, but not disappointed with all the work that our agency did to help him w ith a problem that happened before he beca me ou r client. T h is ca se wa s ver y d i f f ic u lt b e c au s e t he client d id not buy t he problem policy through this agency. Therefore, I helped him by listening to him, reading t he documents, and t y ping letters for him to sig n because I cou ld do no more than that. In t his case, t he Obamacare “On Exchange” policy did not help the patient. It hurt the patient financially. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill ca se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of t hat i nsu ra nce agenc y over one million dollars by f ig ht i ng f raud a nd mistakes in the Medicare system. He wrote the book S O LV I N G M E D IC A R E PROBLEM$.

Financial Tips for Single Parents
BOB KRYGSHELD Pa r ent i ng i s ne v er a n easy job – a nd, unfortunately, it can be e spe c i a l l y d i f f ic u lt i f you’re doing it on your own. As a single parent, you face many challenges, not the least of which are the financial ones. But by following the suggestions below, you may be able to make life easier – for you and your children. • Create a “safety net.” On any given day, you could i ncu r a n u nex pected – a nd unex pected ly large – expense, such as major car repair, a new furnace or a toothacheinducing bill from your dentist. Your daily cash f low may not be enough to cover these bills, and you won’t want to tap into some of your long-term investments or retirement accounts. So you’ll need to build a “safet y net,” or emergenc y f u nd, containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, held in a liquid, low-risk account. • Pu rchase adequate l i fe i nsu ra nce. Wit h sufficient life insurance, you c a n prov ide you r survivors with a level of com for t a nd sec u r it y. You m ig ht have hea rd that you require coverage w or t h s e v en or eig ht t imes your a nnua l e a r n i n g s , but t he r e’s re a l l y no one “r ig ht ” answer for ever yone. A f i na nc ia l professiona l can assess your situation a nd recom mend a n appropriate amount, and type, of life insurance. • C on s id e r d i s a bi l it y insurance. Without the suppor t of a spou se’s income, you could run i nto ser iou s f i na nc ia l difficulties if you were to become ill or injured and had to miss work for an extended period. Your employ er m ig ht of fer disabilit y insurance as an employee benefit, but it may not be enough to meet your needs. So you cou ld consider add i ng private coverage. • Save for ret i rement. You will have to decide on your ow n pr ior it ies, but keep i n mind that your children may have access to grants, loans and scholarships, w he r e a s y ou h a v e t o rely on yourself for your ret irement income. Consequently, you may want to put in as much as you can afford to the ret i rement accou nts available to you, such as an IR A and your 401(k) o r o t h e r e m p l o y e rsponsored plan. • Establish your estate plans. All parents need to develop t heir estate plans – but it may be even more essential for single parents. Your estate plans should include at least these three documents: a will, a power of attorney and a health care power of attorney. A will allows you to name a guardian for you r ch i ld ren a nd specif ies how you w i l l pa ss you r a sset s on t o t he m . You may also need to create other arrangements – such as a living trust– but in any case, you w i l l need to work with your tax and le ga l profe s siona l s to develop comprehensive estate plans. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My Realtor placed my offer on a house with a pre-approval and 20 percent down. The selling agent called my loan officer to ask for my FICO score, how much money I have in the bank and other personal questions so she can run the info with her seller. My loan officer did not give any info except that I am a really good, serious buyer with A+ credit. Was the listing agent out of bounds with such questions? Answer: There’s a complexity within your question that needs to be addressed. The listing agent wants to assure that any would-be purchaser is financially qualified to buy the property. The reason is that the owner (and the agent) do not want the propert y tied up for weeks with a buyer who is ultimately unable to close. Such a delay might mean the loss of a qualified buyer. Also, there may be competing offers for the property so the owner will want to consider the financial strength of the bidders since it does no good to accept a high offer from someone who cannot complete the sale. In the usual case the buyer’s agent pr ov ide s a f i n a nc i a l qu a l i f ic at ion statement or a letter from a lender. Neither is an absolute guarantee of financing, but both are useful. Even t hough t his persona l
i n for mat ion i s c on sidere d pr iv ate, the seller of the transaction needs to know that their buyer has an excellent chance to close the deal. Sellers also have packing to do, movers to schedule, a nd a new home to buy. Remember, too many Real estate deals fall apart due to a poor prequalification of the buyer, or information the buyer failed to disclose to their lender at the time of prequalification. W hat t he lender told t he l ist i ng Broker in your case, should be enough information for a seller to feel they have a well-qualified buyer. What the lender could also have said is that his judgment was based on your ability to put down 20 percent plus his review of your A+ credit report. In other words, the lender cannot reveal the contents of the credit report but he can at least say that his analysis is not based on fantasy. K EN A ND PATSY TE ASE COME BACK TO SAY ‘SO LONG’: Longtime Calumet City residents Ken and Patsy Tease moved from CC two years ago to Las Vegas. They have a lawn implement business at the corner of 159th and Burnham Avenue, Harold Tease and Son which has been on the market for years. They have decided it was time just to sell the contents of the building in a final grand sale and live permanently in sunny Las Vegas. Ken and Patsy are pictured here last weekend during their sale as they met with friends and former customers and said farewell. “It’s a bit hard to say good by. There are so many memories here,” Ken noted nostalgically. He did, after all grow up in the community. His dad was a fixture on that corner and a founder of the Calumet City Chamber of Commerce. Ken is still a Lifetime Member of that organization after having been Executive Director for many years. But time marches on and the Teases found their calling to be glittering Las Vegas where Ken, a member of the musicians union there regularly plays gigs for A listers who come to entertain. Patsy, the hostess w ith the mostest enjoys giving fun parties and invites friends from Calumet City and Cedar Lake where they once had a lovely home. Blessings and Best Wishes to Ken and Patsy Tease! ***
