On Su nd ay, Aug u st 3rd, I picked my parents up to go to a new seafood restau ra nt open i ng up i n C r e t e, I l l . I f ou nd out about t he new establishment form my sister, a schoolteacher. Her teacher’s aide’s husband was the owner. We were all invited to the grand opening. I was going to meet and inter v iew the owner, Bob, for a story in this column…. At least this is the ruse we created in order to get my parents to their surprise fiftieth anniversary party. They were in complete a s t on i s h m e nt w h e n I pu l le d of f of C h ic a go Road, in downtown Crete, onto First Street, and into the park district parking lot . L o a nd behold, a crowd of their friends and relatives were gat hered bet w i x t t he ba nquet facility and the parking lot, cheering them on in celebration of their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Upon seei ng t he crowd, my dad said, “I see what’s going on here.” In the back seat, my mom said, “What, what’s going on?” I said, “What’s going on? ” My dad repeated, “I k now w h at ’s goi n g on here.” T he y ex ite d the vehicle with looks of shock and awe on their faces. My dad said, “This doesn’t look like a seafood r e s t a u r a n t .” We h a d succeeded in pulling the wool over t heir eyes to completely surprise them. We proceeded into t he building where we enjoyed a nice a f ternoon pa r t y

f i l led w it h good cheer. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, especially the guests of honor. We a ll seem to have such busy, hect ic lives nowadays that it’s easy to forget the simple pleasures of doing somet h ing nice for other people or gathering a large group of family and friends. It took a lot of time and planning to put this affair together. And many people had to make time in their lives to make it a great success. There were some bumps in the road, such as my sister’s car not starting the morning of the event, causi ng my brot her i n law to have to make an emergency run to get a new battery and install it. We had to figure out the logistics of everything and fabricate a ruse to achieve the desired goal of having the guests of honor arrive on time after the other g uests, a nd we had to act in a very clandestine manner. The end result was worth our efforts. Always remember to ta ke t he t ime to ma ke s o m e o n e e l s e ’s d a y special. This can be done in a big way as described above, or si mply by s h a r i n g a l au g h w it h s ome one. I f e v er y one became a tad less selfish and a tad more self less, what an amazing world we could have. Thanks to all who attended! They had a great time. Questions or comments may be sent to kevinbradley@columnist. com. Good luck, K.B.

Volunteers Needed for Second Annual Book Brigade Volunteers are needed to join Books, Brushes & Bands for Education in door-todoor delivery of children’s books through several Hammond neighborhoods for the second annual Book Brigade. Partnering w ith First Midwest Bank to collect a goal of 3,000 books at every branch through Sept. 2, delivery will take place weekday evenings from Sept. 12 to 30 through 12 neighborhoods in Hammond. Volunteers are needed for jobs like pulling wagons carrying books and administering surveys to residents. “Seeing how excited the kids were to pick out good books and how grateful the parents were was something that I’ll never forget,” said Olivia Landeros, who walked with last year’s Book Brigade.

Conceived to promote literacy as a basic human need, Book Brigade has already attracted a group volunteers from Dockside Ser v ices Inc. a s pa r t of it s cor porate volunteer day. “As a corporation dedicated to human services, Book Brigade provides us with the opportunity to go into the community and be a positive force,” said Phil Golden, client service coordinator at Dockside. A ny volunteer who participates w ill be inv ited to attend BBB4E’s bir t hday celebration Sept. 12. “For a project like Book Brigade, one of our most important needs is the people to make it happen,” said Shelley Lohr, outreach coordinator at BBB4E. “We are very grateful to everyone who walks with us.”

Warts are a bump in the skin characterized by pain with squeezing of the wart. They are caused by a virus which invades the individual cells of the skin. There have been many treatments available through the years ranging from voodoo to laser surgery, including use of acids and burning out the wart. Therefore, the treatment should be done with the patients lifestyle in mind. to the event that we knew we had to make it even bigger and better this year,” said Lou Martinez, President/CEO of Lake Area United Way. “We are also extremely grateful for the generous support of our partners BP, Solvay, and Kids Against Hunger for helping bring this opportunity back for a second year.” Volunteers are still needed. Participants can sign up as individuals or as a team to help pack the meals. Registration is available online at www.lauw.org until Friday, August 15th. To help meet this year’s increased goal, participants are also encouraged to take the 100,000 Meal Challenge to help raise the meals. Each meals costs just 25₵. Fundraising is not a requirement to participate in Packa-Palooza, but it is encouraged. For more information, please contact Megan Sikes at 219-923-2302 ext. 311 or msikes@lauw.org.

On Friday, August 22nd Lake Area United Way will host their second Pack-a-Palooza meal packing extravaganza at Avalon Manor in Merrillville. Pack-a-Palooza is part of the United Way’s Day of Caring, an annual event that celebrates volunteerism throughout the communities it serves. Last year’s Pack-aPalooza had over 180 volunteers who packed 50,000 meals in 3 hours. The goal for this year’s event is to have over 250 volunteers pack 100,000 meals that will be distributed to local hunger relief organizations to feed hungry children, families, and seniors. Packa-Palooza will be held from 9am to noon. There will also be a Kick-Off Breakfast held at 8:30am for all Lake County Day of Caring volunteers also held at Avalon Manor. “Pack-a-Palooza is a perfect example of how we can all Live United and collectively address the hunger issue in our area. Last year we received such a positive response

“Let Me Show You How My 30 Years Experience Will Help”

Are You A . . . . . . . ? ANNA M. CAISON Several weeks ago my study group and I came across a passage of scripture that we have not been able to shake loose from. Although we had read this particular book of the Bible before, we never recalled reading this verse. We have since begun a study into a different book of the Bible yet, this past Tuesday, we ended up in a discussion that led us back to this scripture. And as before, we paused and pondered, “Lord, is that me?” “Am I a . . . . . . . ?“ The verse that keeps resurfacing in our conversations is Revelation 21:8. It says,”But t he cowardly, unbeliev ing, abom i nable, mu rderers, sex ua l ly immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Notice that coward is at the top of the list! Not the sexually immoral, or murderers, not even liars; cowards are listed first! This prompted me to research the word further because many times the Greek definition of words carries a deeper meaning than it does in our English language. However, in this instance, both languages agree in its definition; “timid; lacking courage to do, endure, or face opposition, difficulty, danger, or pain.” A cowa rd is so despicable, t hat under Military Law, acts of cowardice (desertion in face of the enemy, and surrendering to

the enemy against orders) is punishable by death (Wikipedia). Wit hin t he contex t of Revelat ion 21:8, the cowardly are the ones who denounced Christ to avoid persecution a nd ma rt y rdom. Today, in cultures that reject Christianity, believers are tortured, imprisoned, and even murdered for their faith in Christ. W hen given the opportunity to denounce Christ in exchange for their life, they willingly and joyfully declare their loyalty to the risen Savior. So far, in our country, we aren’t put to death or in prison for our faith. But I believe the time is coming when it will cost us our life to confess faith and obedience to Christ and His Word. Even now, ou r gover n ment i s becom i ng increasingly hostile toward Christianity wh i le becom i ng more accept i ng of ot her religions. Ma ny have a lready compromised their faith just to fit in and be accepted by the world. If the “intolerant” shift in our culture toward Christianity is a prelude to what’s coming, we need to begin preparing ourselves for the Test of all tests! Failure to do so could result in fiery consequences. For questions and/or comments send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60638.

Fetching Market presents a “Modern Organic Pop-Up Market”, featuring antique and artisan wares and farm-to-table vendors on Friday, September 5th 5PM-9PM and Saturday, September 6th 10AM-6PM in an effort to raise funds for the restoration and adaptive reuse of the historic Ford Hangar. Event Company, Fetching Market, in partnership with the Village of Lansing and the Ford Hangar Foundation will host the first-ever public event inside The Historic Henry Ford Hangar. Architect Albert Kahn built the Henry Ford Ha nga r, a nat iona l ly reg i stered landmark, in 1926. It linked Henry Ford’s industrial empire from Dearborn (MI) and Cleveland (OH) to Chicago (IL). Ford used his considerable reputation and resources to promote aviation broadly, including the early development of air service, airports and hangars. Some of the early flyers that used Ford’s Airport, include Jimmy Doolittle, Billy Mitchell, Amelia Earhart, Post and Gatty. “Kahn’s hangar designs included three new concepts in design: Large sliding doors, ex pa nsive w i ndows, a nd ca nt i levered construction. CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We have found a Home we are very interested in buying. How Do I Purchase a Home when I Haven’t Sold Mine? Answer: You would purchase your next Home with a contingency contract. This means you will close on the new Home ONLY after your current home has Sold & Closed. This way you avoid owning and paying on two homes. T here a re t wo t y pes of t hese contingencies. One is called “Contingent on Sale,” where you are contingent on your Home selling by a certain date. If it does not sell by the date in the contract t hen a n extension would have to be approved by both buyer & seller. The 2nd is a “Contingency on Close,” where your home is Sold and will close by a certain date specified in the contract. The closing on your new purchase would then take place shortly after the closing on your existing home. The good news is, most sellers are open to signing a “Contingency on Close.” The bad news is most sellers do not want to sign a contract with a “Contingent on Sale.” Also, even if the seller accepts your “contingent on sale” contract, you could

Answer: In basic terms, a “foreclosure” is forced sale that results from the failure of the borrower to repay the mortgage. A “short sale” is an agreement between a borrower and a lender under which the lender accepts a loss on the loan which allows the owner to sell or refinance. To lenders, either event is a red flag, evidence that a loan agreement was not properly completed.

Don Ma r uska in his book How Great Decisions Get Made: 10 Easy Steps for Reaching Agreement on Even t he Toug hest Issues, offers explanations of the impact of fear and hope on decision-making. At t he root of fea r is a percept ion of sca rcit y. Perceptions of scarcity are deeply ingrained into our culture. Typically, we put in place governing bodies, social organizations and businesses that allocate “limited resources.” Fear of not getting enough of what we need prompts ego-d r iven cont rol l i ng behav iors as people or groups attempt to make s u re t hei r ow n ne e d s a re met . Financial Advice Column

Avoid Expensive Errors When Paying for College BOB KRYGSHELD It’s just about Backto-School time again. If you have young children, you m ig ht be hust l i ng t hem to t he store for backpacks and binders. But if you fast-forward a few years, you can envision driving your kids a little farther — to their college dor ms. A nd when t hat day comes, you’ll want to be financially prepared. So you’ll want to avoid making costly mistakes when preparing for, and pay ing, those big bills. Here are some of the most common of these errors: • Not saving enough — Only half of all families w it h ch i ld ren u nder 18 save a ny money for college, according to a recent st udy by Sa l l ie Mae, the country’s largest or ig i nator of federa l ly insu red st udent loa ns. You might find it easier to save for college if you automatically move a set amount each month from your checking or savings a c c ou nt t o a c o l l e g e savings vehicle. • Not considering vehicles w it h g row t h potent ia l — The same Sallie Mae study found t hat more pa rent s u se a genera l savings account than any other method of saving for college. But since most sav ings accounts t hese days pay only a minimal rate of return, you w ill have trouble getting the growth potential you need to achieve your college savings goals. Consider w or k i n g t o w a r d y ou r college savings goals by i nvest i ng i n a veh icle speci f ica l ly desig ned for college, such as a 529 plan or a Coverdell plan. T here a re d i f ferenc e s between these plans, such as contribution limits and tax treatments, but both a llow you to invest for growth potential. As with any investment account, there are risks involved, including market risk. • Stopping your savings once your children are

in college — Unless your ch i ld ren pla n to t a ke an aw ful lot of credits, they’re not going to finish college in just one year. C o n s e q u e n t l y, y o u ’ l l want to keep investing in your plan or other college savings vehicle while your children are in school. • Taking out 401(k) loans — You r employer may allow you to take out a loan against your 401(k) to help pay for college. But this may not be a good idea for two reasons: First, when you remove money from your 401(k) — even if you plan on eventually pay i ng it back — you w ill slow t he potentia l ac c u mu lat ion i n you r account, thereby depriving yourself of resources you will eventually need for retirement. Second, should you leave the company, you might have to repay the loan within a limited number of days. • Not using available tax credits — Depending on your income, you might qualify for the American Opportunity ta x credit, w h ich i s wor t h up to $2,500, provided you spend at least $4,000 on college expenses. Check with your tax professional to see if you qualify for this credit and how to most effectively incor porate it. A nd be careful you don’t waste the credit, because you may not be able to use it and your plan distributions at the same time. Paying for college can be challenging — but if you can avoid making the above mista kes, you’ve got a better cha nce of getting your kids through school without derailing the progress you’d like to make toward your other financial goals. Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES T h e r e’s s o m e t h i n g special about a handwritten letter. It’s u n ique, a nd revea ls a person’s style. W hile ser v ing in W W II, Master Sergeant Rob e r t B u e t o w w r ot e letters daily to his wife Lu. She lived back home i n C h i c a g o, a w a i t i n g his return. It was near the end of the war, and everyone was anxious to get back to a normal life at home. Letters back then were written in casual form, as if talking on the phone. For ex a mple : g reet i ng her with a friendly “Fatso d a r l i n g ” or “My on l y sweet hea r t.” T he wa r itself isn’t much of a topic in these letters, except for its estimated end. The subjects of these beautiful let ters a re much more persona l, like ever yday happenings or how much they miss each other. Monday, June 25, 1945 Darmstadt, Germany Hello, Fatso darling, How’s the sweetest wife in the whole world feeling today? I’m o.k., except that I miss you more and more all the time. I didn’t get any mail yesterday or today, but I know it’s on the way to me and that’s all that matters. I didn’t write yesterday, ‘cause I was up to my neck in paper work, and still

am. There’s so much to be done that it isn’t even funny because of the large amount of men that were transferred into this outfit and out of it. It’s going to be a while b e fore ever y thing get s straightened out, but after that there won’t be a lot to do. I’m working tonight, so I’ll only be able to write one page, but I’ll try to make up for it later. I’ve managed to get copies of a lot of pictures that some of the boys took in France, Belgium and Germany, so I’ll send them to you or else bring them along with me. I wish I could give you some news about when I might be home but I still don’t have any idea. However, I have a hunch I’ll be on my way before the fall. That’s all for tonight, sweetheart, but I’ll write again tomorrow. Goodnight, sweet dreams, and all my love dearest. mu s t a c c om p a n y a n y offer you make. This preapproval form will ensure that you, your lender and I are all on the same page. Think of your LSR as your “License to Buy”. This is my bu si ne s s pr ac t ic e, Mr. Buyer. I do not show homes to buyers who are not willing to go through t he painless process of spea k ing w it h a lender to be pre-approved. This can often be done over the phone and this is where all serious buyers who are financing their purchase in today’s market must start. M r. Bu y er w a s not happy with my business policy. He told me there a re a lot of agents out there who will show him homes without being preapproved f irst. Yep Mr. Buyer, there are. And “you are free to work with any one of them”. Can buyers and sellers help themselves?

ARTHUR V. VEAL IV

MIKE BUDER The ot her day I received a ca l l f rom a potential buyer and spent a considerable a mount of t i me a ns wer i ng h is que st ion s about shor t sales, foreclosures and the process of buying a home i n t he Sout h Subu rbs. As we w rapped up our conversation I re-iterated that his next step, since he would be financing his home purchase, would be to get pre-approved by a qua lif ied lender. That’s when t he conversat ion cha nged direct ion. Mr. Bu yer d id n’t fe el t hat t h i s pre-approv a l w a s necessa r y. I mea n t he last time he checked his credit score was in t he mid 600’s. The fact of the matter is Mr. Buyer, what you t h i n k you r c re d it score WAS means nothing to me. There are a lot of factors that go into the pre-approval process and it’s important that you, as the buyer, know exactly where you stand with the terms of t he mortgage. How much w i l l you be putting down? What type of f i n a nc i ng w i l l y ou be getting…FH A, VA or conventional? And, what is the loan amount you will be approved to receive… today that is. It doesn’t do any good to show you homes you may not be approved to buy. In order for a seller to ta ke you seriously, a loan status report (LSR) from a lender

Artist Matthew Groves ‘Glazed Earthenware’ ________________________________________

The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to present a new exhibition titled Welcome to Earth to open the college’s fall semester exhibits. Welcome to Earth is a select body of ceramic sculptures from Chicago based artist Matthew Groves that will be on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery at the South Holland Campus August 18 through September 15, 2014. Figurative and narrative, the work ref lects Groves’ unique point of view, demonstrates his passion for craft and traditional forms, and recognizes ceramics as a vital cultural medium. The public is welcome to v isit art ex hibitions and receptions at no charge. The Thiel Gallery is on the 4th floor in the Art & Design hallway. SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The consta nt debate a bout w het her bu y i ng or renting is better never stops. The market has had a major downturn in the last few years and began to have a recovery but it sems t h i ngs may be sta l l i ng again. All of this leads to the question of why buy a home in the first place? I mean, I get it. If you don’t have great credit or cant qua l i f y to buy a home then you feel that renting is your ONLY option right now. On the other hand, you may a lready ow n a home a nd you wa nt to move to a new place but you cant sell your old place so you just wait it out. These two groups are actually able to help each other and they just don’t realize it yet. There is a huge market of people that want to buy a home but they cant get qualified for a home loan. Either they had a home and lost it or they have never had the money and credit to buy. At the same time there is a huge market of people that want to sell but they don’t want to lose a lot of money a nd t hey feel t hat t hey cant sell right now without taking a hit on their credit and selling on a short sale. So what should these two do? I n a per fe c t w orld, these two parties would work together. An owner wou ld create a way for someone w ith less than perfect credit to buy their h om e . T h i s w ou ld b e benef icia l to t he ow ner

because he could sell his home and go buy a new place now. At t he same time the person with less than perfect credit could get i nto t hei r d rea m home and start building credit, so that they could completely own the home. Well this actually happens e v e r y d a y. T h e s e t w o pa r t ies meet up a nd although the way that the whole thing works is a little u nc onv ent ion a l, w hen its all said and done both parties get what they want. The seller gets a buyer at a good price and the buyer gets a home at a reasonable price and can even buy w ithout hav ing f lawless credit. T he a n s wer to t h i s issue is creative financing. Creat ive f i na nci ng ca n solve a lot of the issues that happen in todays real estate ma rket. Creat ive f i na nci ng w i l l become more ma i nst rea m a s compa nies lea rn to leverage t he i nter net w it h rea l estate. Be on the lookout for a whole new string of financing opt ion s t o c om e i nt o the marketplace to accommodate the weaker e c o n o m y. C h a n g e i s coming and I for one think the change is good! Till next week, Good luck and God Bless and remember… If you want to sell your house on terms check out our informative website at w w w. sellonterms.com for more information.

HOLY FAMILY STATUE DEDICATED AT L A N S I N G K N I G H T S O F COLUMBUS: Pictured here in front of the lovely new statue honoring the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph are Fr. Dave Simonetti, associate pastor, St. James Church, Sauk Village, his parents, Louis and JoAnn Simonetti and K of C, Mike Caballa. The solemn occasion turned festive after the Mass and blessing as the 100 or so faithful gathered in the K of C hall for a feast and fellowship. The day was made even more special as Bishop Joseph Perry was the celebrant representing the ChicagoArchdiocese. The hugely popular Fr. Dave had a contingent of fans from parishes he has served present for the festivities. The statue rests in the garden of the property surrounded by flowers, trees, water, benches and privacy and offers a place for quiet contemplation. *** PELKEY ’S CELEBRATE 30 YEARS OF WEDDED BLISS: Calumet City Attorney John Pelkey and his wife, Patricia traveled to Paris, France, the city of love, to celebrate their wedding anniversary in a most romantic fashion! From all reports, the City of Lights is as beautiful as the movies make it out to be and the food is fantastic! Think Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant! Long May the Pelkey’s Love! ***

led a cheerful group of residents around the block of Calumet Memorial Park, Wentworth and Memorial Drive on Tuesday August 5, 2014 as she has for the past many years. Following the walk and a talk by Calumet City Chief Edward Gilmore, the park features were opened and everyone was treated to Pizza from Doreens, hot dogs, and other summer delights. Pictured here is Calumet City businessman Chris Martin of State Farm with his State Farm teddy bears. The soft bears were the highlight of the evening for several lucky children who won one. Martin is the Program Chairman for the Calumet City Chamber of Commerce. ***
