Dogs, Cats, Pigs Available for Adoption Animals with hooves and paws will be available for adoption from several local animal organizations at the second annual Hoof and Tail Adoption Event on Aug. 27. The mega adoption event will feature adoptable dogs, cats and pigs from noon to 4 p.m. at Happy Note Farm, 10623 Cline Ave., Crown Point, Ind. Participating organizations include Alsip to the Rescue, CPR Fund, Hooved Animal Humane Society, Humane Society Calumet Area (HSCA) and Lakeshore PAWS. Made possible through grant funding from the Crown Point Community Foundation, the event also will include a farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; market, an event-wide dog scavenger hunt where dogs can search for treats and prizes, a corn roast and live music from Bourbon Aristocracy. HSCAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic will offer nail clipping and pet care and wellness information will be available for the public. Attendees also will have the chance to meet ambassador animals from HSCAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Moraine Ridge Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and learn more about wildlife rehabilitation and humane interaction with native wildlife and the environment. Each dog or cat adopted at the event will be sent to his or her new home with an adoption packâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;including toys, treats, a bandana, and a leash and collar for dogs or a temporary carrier for cats. The event is free and open to the public. Bronowski’s art gallery will be open every Saturday from 2-8 p.m. The gallery is located at 6725 Kennedy Avenue in Hammond, Ind. Most of Bronowski’s art will be on sale. The gallery will showcase the art until September 15. Bronowski, continuing lecturer and radio and TV studio manager at Purdue University Northwest, will display his artwork from 1980 to 2016. St yles of art w ill include American regionalism, realism, surrealism and still life. “The audience should view the show with an open mind. Some are straightforward realism, still life and landscape. Others are more obscure in genre and subject matter,”

District 205 Faculty Make The Most of Summer

District 205 has a long standing tradition of offering quality programs to students throughout the summer. In addition to working with students, District 205 teachers also take advantage of summer break to attend professional development workshops. This past June, over 50 teachers attended AVID’s annual Summer Institute. Teachers, counselors, and administrators traveled to Minneapolis for this year’s Summer Institute. AVID’s Summer Institute includes workshops, team meetings, student and staff speakers, and more. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an internationally recognized college-prep elective course that provides students with skills and strategies they need to be successful in college. At this year’s summer institute, teachers learned more about the program and how to implement strategies to best fit students’ needs. For three jam-packed days, teachers had in-depth discussions about AVID’s core philosophies – writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading - across all content areas. Teachers were also able to network with other teachers across the country in order to share strategies and resources to help students become college and career ready. In addition to learning strategies, teachers also met in teams to discuss the AVID program at each school. The AVID elective class is offered in all three district 205 high schools - Thornridge, Thornton, and Thornwood. Teachers met in school-specific teams to discuss AVID’s progress as well as set goals for the upcoming school year. Teachers who attended the Summer Institute are excited to spread AVID’s mission of college readiness for all students throughout their school. Our answering service took a message the evening of the previous day and the message was delivered to me in the morning. T he message was, “Thank you for being so prompt and pay ing my doctor bi l l.” The t r ut h is that I did not pay any doctor bill for this client. But, I did help to resolve the bill. I g ive f u l l credit to t he doctor w it h whom I worked to resolve the medical bill problem. I w rote a polite letter to the doctor, explained the misunderstanding, and suggested that it would be good business practice to forgive the balance of $68.25. Under the facts of the situation, the doctor agreed. My work saved our client $68.25. I n t h i s c a se, t here w a s no f r aud a nd no mista ke caused by t he Medicare system itself. T he bi l l problem w a s caused because ou r c l i e nt s w i t c h e d f r om

Med ica id to Med ica re and a Medicare related i n su ra nce pol ic y. T he current system does not seem to work well to make t hat move smoot hly. It caused a problem w ith the bill for services from the doctor. It was not the doctor’s fault. It was not the patient’s fault. It was a problem caused by a fault in the “system”.
