Athlete’s Feet

Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. The Thornton Township General Assistance Department participated in a unique opportunity to better serve and connect with residents receiving General Assistance. The entire department staff filled the roles usually assigned to clients in the Workfare program at the Food Assistance Center, located

at 15340 Page Ave, Harvey, from 9am to 5pm on Wednesday, August 12th. Thornton Township General Assistance staff prepared and served food boxes to clients as a way of showing gratitude and solidarity for the Workfare members’ help. General Assistance Manager Troy O’Quin said of the event,

“By doing this our General Assistance staff can gain a better appreciation for what our clients experience on a weekly basis.” ABC 7’s ‘Windy City LIVE’ co-host Val Warner, along with her children Zoe and Max, stopped by to volunteer and learn more about Thornton Township General Assistance.

South Suburban College’s Division of Adult Education is offering a wide range of opportunities for adults to build the basic skills required for success. Adult Basic Education (ABE) helps men and women whose skill levels are below the ninth grade. ABE students improve their skills in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Many adults choose to further build on these skills and pursue a high school education through the High School Equivalency (HSE) program. The HSE program will develop the skills required to pass the GED exams. Studies will include Reasoning through Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, and the US and Illinois Constitutions. Additionally, English as a Second Language (ESL) allows non-native students to improve their English skills from beginning to advanced levels. Most of the Adult Education programs are offered both full and part-time at the Main Campus in South Holland or the Oak Forest Center. Greeting District 205 residents and friends,

I am delighted to update the community and present the second of a four part series outlining several of the Long-Term Visionary goals of Thornton Township High School District 205 School Board of Education. The District 205 Board of Education aims to create the best high schools in the state that exhibit an ongoing culture of excellence for each and every student entering District 205. This week, the second Board goal addresses the District’s learning climate and supportive learning. We stand firm in ensuring every students is in a safe, caring, and culturally sensitive environment. This supportive culture also extends beyond our three campuses with the many programs District 205 offers. Through these programs and activities our students are being prepared for success during their high school years and into future college and careers choices. The Board recognizes student development through participation in extra and co-curricular activities and programs. Each year, students have the opportunity to take college tours visiting universities such as Northwestern University, University of Illinois, Illinois State, Chicago State, Western, Eastern and Southern Illinois. This past spring, District 205 sponsored an out-of-state trip to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). The trip included visits to Fisk, Spelman, Morehouse, Alabama State, and Rust College. Additionally during the summer, we provide students with a weeklong intensive Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) summer camp at Chicago State University. Students live on campus for the week and gain invaluable exposure to college campus having college professors teach them the critical skill sets needed to excel from high school to college. Several students from District 205 created a mobile app during summer camp that was featured on WVON radio! District 205 students are being prepared to thrive in their community and accept the challenges and responsibilities of leading in a global society. God Revealed Through Scripture ANNA M. CAISON I began this column a little more than 4 years ago with the purpose of showing the many ways God reveals Himself to us. I began my faith walk with the Lord at age 13. Today, at age 60 I’ve never ceased to be amazed at His work in, through and around me. W hen I f a i le d t he 7t h g r a de I experienced His presence through the life of Daniel and his three friends, recorded in Daniel 1:17. He answered my prayer by giving me knowledge and understanding of my classes that enabled me to skip the 8th grade and enter 9th grade. As the 3rd of eleven children, I spent time in the pit with Joseph, learning you just can’t share your dreams with everybody (not even family members), while waiting for God to set the stage for His debut of me. I’ve been betrayed by Judas, chased by Saul, and found comfort in Jonathan. Through Judas I discovered God had a plan in the midst of betrayal. And from Saul I’ve learned to trust the promises of God no matter how bad things appear. I’ve w a l ke d w it h A br a h a m a nd journeyed with his son Isaac. I’ve stood next to Isaiah when he saw a vision of God’s throne. I fell on my face beside him as we both saw the wretchedness

As the seraphim took the coal and touched Isaiah’s lips, purging him from sin; I understood the preciousness of the blood of Jesus that cleansed me of my sin, granting me access into the inner presence of God. When I think of His forgiveness of me, it’s not so hard to forgive those who have offended or mistreated me. I’ve walked in the shoes of the woman who pressed her way through the crowd and touched the hem of Jesus’ robe and was healed of her sickness. When cancer invaded my body I encountered the love of a Heavenly Father who walked with me through the fear of surgery, and recovery. When my husband abandoned me, His love remained steadfast. As the Apostle John said at the end of his account of the gospel, there is so much more I can say of my experience with the Lord that if I were to try to write it down it wouldn’t be enough room in this column or this newspaper for the next 60 years to contain it.
