Pregnancy Aid South Suburbs (PASS network for life) is seeking volunteers for their Lansing and South Holland pregnancy centers. Humane Society Calumet Area (HSCA) hosts its first Bark & Bowl, a night of crazy, cosmic bowling to benefit the animals at HSCA on October 4 from 8 to 11 p.m. at Plaza Lanes, 8101 Kennedy Ave, Highland, Ind. The cost is $30 per bowler, which includes three hours of bowling, shoe rental, and a dessert bar by Gold Star Café and Catering. Bowlers can reserve a lane of 6 bowlers for $160, a $20 discount. Spectator tickets are available for $10. Crazy bowling is bowling with a twist. Each frame presents a different fun cha llenge for bowlers to tr y, including bowling with your eyes closed, bowling backwards between your legs, or bowling on one foot. Bowlers are encouraged to enlist the help of friends, family and co-workers to raise pledges to support the animals of HSCA. All proceeds benefit the animals of HSCA. Successful completion of this course is required in order to become eligible to take the State of Illinois Nurse Assistant Certification Examination, and SSC provides more contact hours for training than traditional CNA programs along with an additional free refresher course prior to this critical certification exam. The college offers five 8-week sessions per year. The next class will start on Tuesday, October 14th. Please note: Financial Aid cannot cover the cost of this noncredit program, nor the physical and background check. Payment is currently due at the time of registration for Late Start Classes but financial aid can still be applied for the 12-week credit classes (financial aid application must be completed by September 9, 2014). Question : We pa id of f ou r $150,000 mortgage balance recently. The houses in our area are on the market for between $320,000 and $390,000. We were told by one of our neighbors that a few other neighbors are upset with us for doing this, because it dropped the value of the homes in our area. Is this true?

I want to offer the sellers a fair price for the home, but not overpay. What can I do?

Answer: No. If a home sells for $500,000 it means the owner gets $500,000 in cash at closing whether the home is owned debt-free or the sellers owe up to their eye brows. The $500,000 is then reduced by closing costs, lien pay-offs, etc. Home values are determined by supply and demand. Easy financing and low rates create additional demand by expanding the pool of potential buyers. That a home is free and clear of all debt does not mean it is less valuable or more valuable in the marketplace. ********* Question: I’m interested in purchasing a home that’s priced 9 percent above others in the neighborhood. So while we have our time in this world, we would do well to fol low W i l l ia ms’ Keating character’s advice a nd l ive pa s sion atel y, enjoying poetry, beauty, romance, and love…and passionately, positively, leave ou r ma rk on t he w or ld e x c l a i m i n g ou r uniqueness. Art Exhibitions on Display at South Suburban College The Art & Design Department of Sout h Subu rba n Col lege (SSC ) is pleased to present a new exhibition titled Trail to Arcadia on display August 25th through September 17th. Trail to Arcadia is the show’s title piece and the exhibition of watercolor paintings from Chicago-based artist Anna Zanic on display in the Lee E. Dulgar Gallery at the South Holland Campus August 18th through September 15, 2014. Zanic was born in Vinkovci, Croatia in 1976. She earned her Master’s of Fine Arts from at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, in 2002. In this body of work, the abstracted notion of atmospheric landscape is a metaphorical expression of l i fe’s my s t er iou s a nd elu si v e path. Works are built with layers of watercolor washes, intermixed with dynamic lines, scribbles and marks of ink drawing. Carts and Cocktails event honors Mark diSuvero, exhibits works of Chakaia Booker and Barry Tinsley Governors State Universit y celebrates severa l new additions at the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park as well as the 45th anniversary of one of its signature works at Carts & Cocktails 2014, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. The event will be hosted by NBC 5 Chicago News Anchor Stefan Holt and will feature cocktails and a tour of the sculpture park in golf carts. BMO Harris Bank is pleased to support this annual benefit fundraiser as a Platinum-level sponsor. “Carts & Cocktails is the perfect way for folks to introduce themselves to what has been named one of the Top Ten Most Amazing Sculpture Gardens in the World by the Best Value Schools Website,” said Geoffrey Bates, director and curator of the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park. “We begin with a lakeside cocktail party beneath a party tent. Then, as our caravan of golf carts travels through the park, guests immediately recognize they have arrived in a very special place. After brief stops at three artworks, we return to our tent for scrumptious dessert. It’s a glorious afternoon of fun, food and fine art.” Carts and Cocktails celebrates the 45th anniversary of “Yes! for Lady Day” by Mark diSuvero, which the tour will visit. Mr. diSuvero spent two summers at GSU and crafted a number of sculptures during that period, including “Yes! for Lady Day.” It was purchased by Lewis Manilow and donated to the University in 1971. It has been noted as one of diSuvero’s most significant artworks. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts for his achievement in the field of sculpture by President Barack Obama in 2010.

“Butte,” a recent addition to the permanent collection by Barry Tinsley. Ms. Booker will attend the event as a Visiting Artist. She has exhibited widely including several solo exhibitions at Marlborough Gallery, New York, N.Y., National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Mo. She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants and lives in New York City and Allentown, Pa. Over a career that spans four decades, Barry Tinsley has completed numerous private and public commissions including a number with the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois Capital Development Board’s Percent for Art programs. His work included the 1975 landmark exhibition “Sculpture for a New Era” presented at the Federal Plaza in downtown Chicago. He lives near New Carlisle, Ind., where he also maintains his studio. In his article “Dear Michael Brown: If I were preaching on Sunday here is what I would say” Christopher House posed a question to the Christian community following the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a St. Louis police officer. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, o u r government as a whole has not. Many officials that make up the legislative branch of congress have refused to work with the president in bettering the lives of “all” Americans and have instead focused all their energy in petty pursuits to sue and or impeach the president. Without statistics I can’t prove its true, but it seems since Obama’s election injustice against Blacks, especially young Black men have increased. What has happen in Ferguson, Missouri, the vicious shooting death of an unarmed Black teen by a White police officer is only one of several incidents that have occurred across our country. Christopher House asked, “Is there A Word from the Lord?” Yes, Christopher, there is a Word from the Lord. In 1 Samuel 18:12-15 we read that King Saul feared the young man David. He feared David so much that it became his life mission to do whatever it took to kill him. Why did Saul fear David? Saul feared God’s anointing on David that allowed him to do great things; he feared David’s popularity with the people; and he feared the end of his kingdom. When David realized that Saul was intent on killing him, he behaved wisely when in Saul’s presence. Opponents of racia l equa lit y and reconciliation operate out of a fear that’s very similar to King Saul’s. They fear the advancement of Black people to positions that have traditionally been off limits; they fear the change among the majority of White Americans who accept, learn from and value the contribution of Black Americans; and they fear losing dominate control over how the country is ran. And of course we can’t overlook their fear that stereotypes all young Black men as thugs, gang bangers, dope dealers, and murders. We need to teach our young men how to wisely behave themselves in the presence of police officers whose attitude and body language express racial hatred and/or fear toward them. They need to be non-confrontational, respectful, a nd peacef u l when in t he presence of aggressive and unprofessional law enforcement officers. A Celebration Of The American Worker BOB KRYGSHELD On Sept. 1, we observe Labor Day — a celebration of the American worker. Of course, you work hard at your own job, but, when you t h i n k of it, ever y worthwhile endeavor in life requires significant e f f o r t — a n d t h a t ’s certainly the case w ith investing. The harder you work at it, the more likely you are to make progress toward your goals. So as you think about investing, consider t he following areas in which you w ill need to apply yourself: • Work to identif y your goals. It’s important that you know just why you’re investing. Do you want to send your children (or grandchildren) to college? Do you want to retire early? W hat sort of retirement lifestyle do you envision? What kind of legacy do you want to leave? Identifying your financial goals is the necessary first step toward achieving them. • Work to know your own risk tolerance . It’s essential that you know your own invest ment persona lit y — that is, how much risk you ca n com for tably handle. If you think you can handle a relatively high level of risk, but you f ind yourself wor r y ing excessively over every drop in the market, you may need to re-evaluate your risk tolerance and adjust your investment habits. Conversely, if you believe yourself to be highly riskavoidant , but you find yourself frustrated over the relatively low returns you get from conservative investments, you may need to revise your thinking — and your actions. • Work to avoid bad habits. Ma ny i nve stor s cha se after “hot” stocks or try to “t i me” t he ma rket. However, hot stocks can cool of f quick ly, whi le efforts to predict market hig hs a nd lows a re

doomed to fail — because no one ca n accu rately forecast those points. You will want to be especially diligent about learning to look past the headlines and beyond short-term price movements in the f ina ncia l ma rkets — because too many people overreact to these events. If you can avoid these bad investment habits, you’ll be doing yourself a favor. • Wor k t o f ol low a c on si stent i nve st ment strateg y . If you invest over the course of several decades, you are going to see a lot of ups and downs in the financial markets. A nd when t he ma rkets get choppy, you may be tempted to take a “time out” from investing. But if you do this repeatedly, you will certainly interrupt t he prog ress you need to m a ke tow a rd y ou r financial goals. If you can develop t he d iscipl i ne to fol low a consistent investment strategy and to keep investing in all t y pes of ma rket s, you have a pretty good chance of “smoothing out” the effects of market volatility over time. And, as a bonus, you’ll be far less likely to concern yourself over dayto-day price fluctuations. • Work to rev iew you r p r o g r e s s . A l on g w i t h your f ina ncia l adv isor, consistently review your pr og r e s s tow a rd y ou r goa ls. Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES At t he end of t he work week, I usually get a call from my husband before he comes home. H e ’s r e a d y t o e n j o y t he w e e k e nd , a nd b y that I mean, it includes doing household chores together. Like trimming bushes in the yard and cleaning windows. This is when I let him k now that I have other “stuff” to do around the house too, like laundr y and writing. I don’t have t i me t o b e t r i m m i n g bushes all weekend, for goodness sakes. But in rea l it y, I’m pa n ick i ng about nothing. He likes clean laundr y, and can trim bushes by himself. He just likes the company. After being apart from each other so long during WWII, I’m sure the reality of com i ng back home was settling in for Master Sgt. Robert Buetow’s wife Lu. He wrote to her daily about how much t i me they would spend together when he arrived home. I think she panicked about juggling work w it h t he hubby home.
