There is a big, thick f i le i n my of f ice w it h t he n a me of a c l ient from Gary, Indiana. Her Med ica re cla i m s were gummed up because of some attorneys and an insurance company. W hen she c a me to my office over a month ago, she wanted to know why Medica re a nd her Me d ic a r e s upplement insurance policy were not paying anything on her medical claims. I studied the bills and papers that she brought and then started making phone calls with her. Her Me d ic a r e s upplement insurance company told us that Medicare ruled that neither Medicare nor her Medicare supplement insura nce compa ny should pay anything on the denied claims. T hen, we phoned Medicare and requested docu ment s about how a nd why Medica re ruled that way. Then, I compared the Medicare documents with the bills. I fou nd t he pr oblem . Some attorneys and an insura nce compa ny caused it. Our client had been in a car accident on March 31, 2010. The car accident case was settled. But, neither the attorneys nor t he insurance company involved not if ied Medica re t hat the matter was settled. T he y f a i le d to fol low professional standards. Park Place Of St. John Opens With Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony After years of planning and months of construction work, Park Place of St. John celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its Health & Wellness Center on Aug. 23. Park Place is the newest senior living community for Providence Life Services, a not-for-profit that offers a full spectrum of aging services. “I can not begin to tell you how excited I am to see all of your faces here, celebrating this with us today,” Providence Life Services CEO Rich Schutt said at the ceremony. “It has been literally decades in the making, and to know that it’s real today is just overwhelming.” Land donors, politica l representatives, architects, designers, contractors, lenders, staff, and others were all present for the event. “With great joy, I welcome each one of you to the opening of the Park Place of St. John Health & Wellness Center,” Providence Board Chair Tim Breems said to the crowd. “You represent countless colleagues, family, and friends who have provided and invested all that was required to bring this lovely community to this place on this beautiful day.” After the ceremony, guests were able to tour each of the three “Small Houses” that make up the Health & Wellness Center. Two of these home-like buildings will offer skilled nursing care to just 10 people each, and the third will provide short-term rehabilitation services for up to 30 people at a time. At the time Providence received the donation of the land where Park Place is now built, the organization had also
begun looking at the best models for the future of skilled nursing care. The result of their study was the “Small House,” Providence’s take on the “Green House” senior living trend that has spread across the county. Small Houses are structures built with private bedrooms and bathrooms, open kitchens and a home-like f loor plan. The layout helps seniors navigate their home more easily, giving them more freedom. And it fosters a social atmosphere, as people share meals and get to know each other well. It encourages both independence and community. But it’s not just the architecture that sets Small Houses apart. The model extends beyond the physical building to the staff and philosophy of care. Each house is staffed by CNAs, referred to as Care Partners, who care for residents as a family member would — they keep the house clean, do laundry, cook for and eat with residents. Residents are allowed as many choices as possible: when to wake up and go to sleep, and what activities to plan, for example. As a group, they get input into the grocery shopping and the menu, and they are encouraged to assist in work around the house to whatever extent they are able. Providence opened their first Small Houses – the first in the state of Illinois – on their Victorian Village campus in Homer Glen. They are now eager to bring the same model of care and service to Northwest Indiana. Newly-hired Park Place of St. John staff were at the ribbon-cutting event to guide guests through the Small House and explain the benefits of this new kind of nursing home. The staff has already attended Small House training,
Bowen High School Reunion
specialized dementia training, and orientation classes to prepare them for their caregiving roles in the new community. “It’s nice for (the program) to happen in nicely aligned bricks and mortar, but when the day is done, it is about people serving people. And we have a great group of people who have committed their lives to doing that,” Schutt said. The first residents of the Health & Wellness Center are expected to move in during the month of September, and the community will begin accepting rehab clients at that time as well. Alliance Rehab will provide therapy services. When it is finished, the Park Place of St. John campus will offer more than skilled nursing and rehab services. Construction on a three-story retirement living building is nearing completion and is expected to open later this fall. Thirty-three of its 60 apartments have already been reserved, and some floor plans have already sold out. Later phases of construction will include assisted living apartments, completing the continuum of care. Providence Life Services traces its history back to Holland Home in the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago, where 12 seniors lived in a former parsonage — their original Small House model. Today, Providence serves more than 5,000 seniors a year, and is proud to offer a full spectrum of aging services, from retirement living to end-of-life care. Visit www.providencelifeservices.com to learn more. For more information about Park Place of St. John, call (219) 525-4658 or email PPSJ@provlife.com.

Random Reads BRANDI SMITS Awkward by Svetlana Chmakova You start a new school and hope that, for once in your life, ever y thing goes smoothly. You walk dow n t he ha l l, t r y i ng to look confident when i n act ua l it y you a re terrified. Your focus drifts for a spl it second a nd the worst happens: you trip and your books f ly everywhere. This is exact ly what happens to Peppi, short for Penelope, on her first day. But, to escalate the hor r ible i ncident even more, w hen a pa ssi ng boy stops to help her pick everything up, a group of boys starts calling the boy and Peppi names. Peppi panics, trying not to soil her first day by earning the nickname of “Nerder Girlfriend,” Peppi pushes the boy away from her and yells at him. Shortly after her first experience at Berrybrook M idd le S c ho ol, Pe ppi makes some friends and joins the A rt Club. The Art Club is a place where she ca n let her a r t do the talking, rather than having the attention on her s el f. A l l t he w h i le she avoids t he helpf u l boy whenever she ca n, k now i ng t hat she should apologize to him. Eventually her attempts to dodge t he boy a re proven impossible when
her tough science teacher assigns her a tutor, who just happens to be the boy from the hallway, Jaime. Peppi k now s t hat she should apologize to Jaime, especially since the two of them are actually getting along. But, even if she does apologize, their friendship wou ld a lways be rock y a s Peppi’s A r t C lub is the archrival of Jaime’s Science C lub. W hen the two clubs are pitted against each other to earn a table in the school’s club fair won by the votes of the students, ideas fly and sabotage runs rampant. Can Peppi and Jaime show the others how art and science can relate to each other? Awkward is a fantastic graphic novel that t r u ly c apt u res m idd le school experiences, emotions, and language. Chma kova’s cha racters are well thought out and d iverse. W h i le some middle grade books tend to g los s over t he end with an inevitable happy end i n g , Awk w ard h a s conf lict t hat continues on, mirroring the fickle behav iors of teens. Chmakova includes her roug h d raw i ngs a nd br a i n stor m i ng for t he book at the end. Readers interested in making their own comics can see her process and use it to help them through their own processes.

Residents Enjoy Food & Festivities at Taste of Thornton Township
Families and friends gathered together for a festive end of summer celebration at the annual Taste of Thornton Township last week. Presented by the township’s Human Relations Commission, the event offers a variety of food, and free entertainment and activities for all ages and showcases local restaurants and vendors. Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes returned to headline this year’s taste. Children’s activities included crafts, face painting, rides, visits with favorite cartoon characters and breakfast with super heroes and princesses. Entertainment included also the Chicago Boyz, Sounds of Santana, Past Life Band, and Michael Jackson impersonator Rico. South Holland resident Edward Benson and his wife have been coming to the taste since they moved to the village 10 years ago. Benson summed up the sentiment of those in attendance. “We were delighted to find out that the township did this. We haven’t missed one yet. “We love the musical guests, bands, acrobatic acts, and of course the food. This event really offers something for everyone.” Percussionist for Sounds of Santana Henry “Kiki” Ventura
said the band was delighted to return to the event after performing there a few years ago. Sounds of Santana is one of the few tribute bands dedicated to keeping the music of Carlos Santana alive. They are from East Chicago, Indiana and have opened for several well-known acts including the Chi Lites. “We love the crowd here. The spirit is great,” he said. New to the taste this year was Ms. Dee’s Oven Lovin Homemade Cakes and Desserts and Soul Food. Owner Della Young of Harvey has been operating her catering business for the past five years working out of local church kitchens. Young said she contacted the township after seeing flyers about the event. “This is really a great family event,” she said. T h is wa s a lso t he f i rst yea r of pa r t icipat ion by Eng ineer ing for K ids, operated by Keit h Poole. The Hammond-based business was started in 2014 and is designed to get children interested and involved in science so
that they will think about pursuing a career in engineering. Poole said t he program of fers hands on engineering programs that promote critical thinking and problem solving while participating in fun activities. During his welcome Thornton Township Supervisor Fr a n k Zuc c a rel l i st re s se d t he tow n sh ip’s ongoi ng commitment to offer programs that bring people together and unite all segments of the community to make it stronger and safer. The township continues to focus on efforts on improving relationships between local police and youth. “We need to develop and promote an atmosphere of mutual respect,” he said. “The township is successful because we work together with and have the support of our local communities. We need to show each other that we love each other, by being kind to each other and sharing what we have,” he said.

Northwest Indiana Premiere at the Towle Theater T he Tow le T heater closes it s 2016 Subscription Season with the Northwest Indiana premiere comedy of Secrets of a Soccer Mom by Kat h leen Cla rk. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I am considering purchasing a home. I am tired of renting. I’m not handy, but have friends who are. I want a place where I don’t have to answer to a landlord. My credit score is 620, and I know my income will rise in the future. I’ll save some money and in a couple years, I’ll move to another area where they don’t have snow! What are your thoughts about buying a home for the first time? Answer: Purchasing your first home is one of the most exciting events to occur in a life! Besides the investment aspect, there are many reports that homeownership is beneficial to the family. But you pretty much checked off every reason NOT to buy a home at this time in your life. You are not handy, and you cannot rely on your friends to do these repairs for you, and to hire someone is expensive. You will have to learn to do some basic home repairs. Believe me, a home will need maintenance & repairs. Are you up for learning that? It also sounds like you don’t know what your life will be like in a few years. One of the best reasons not to buy a home is if you’re unsure about where you’ll be in a few years. Buying a home is generally not worth it from a financial stand point
Wanted: Bailer wire, fishing reel, open faced. 708-5328337
Wanted: side handle for an angle grinder and a set of truck tire changing irons. 708-532-8337
Wanted: 6 or so common house bricks from the 50s or 60s. 708-532-8337

Wanted: drill press vice (mill vice) and round gauge. 708532-8337

unless you’re going to be there for a few years -- let’s say at least three, and probably more. Sure you can buy a home with less than perfect credit, but that doesn’t make it a good idea. The traditional go-to option for shaky credit is an FHA loan, but these have high mortgage premiums. According to myfico, a borrower with a score of 760 or above can expect a rate of about 3.38%, as of this writing. With a 620, the rate jumps to 4.97%. This may not sound like too much of a difference, but on a $300,000 mortgage, this means you’ll pay almost $100,000 more in interest over 30 years. It would be wise to advance your credit score before buying a home, save for a larger down payment and consider the other factors we listed above. Neuromas
Neuromas are a scarring of a sheath surrounding the nerve. They usually occur between the 3rd and 4th toes but can be found elsewhere as well. Symptoms include feeling a click in the ball of the foot, or electrical shocks shooting to the ends of the affected toes. Surgery is nearly always needed to alleviate the symptoms although injections, padding or physical therapy can help. If you have any questions concerning neuromas or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Miscellaneous Items For Sale P h i l l i p s C h e v r o l e t of L a n s i n g i s com m it ted to con st a nt ly evolv i ng to better ser ve t heir customers a nd t hat commitment was demonstrated recently in a ceremonial ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand opening of their service department expansion. This project added a new, stateof-t he-a rt ca r wash a nd si x additiona l service bays, and improved the exterior façade of the entire service department. Ph i l lips Chev rolet President Cu r t is Pascarella and Dealer Operator Michael Maheras were joined by Lansing Mayor Norm Abbott and several Village Trustees and other officials for the celebration that marked the completion of the construction project which began in April.
T he complet ion of t h i s ex pa n sion represents a $600,000 investment in serving the automotive service needs of Lansing, Illinois and the surrounding communities. These improvements are in addition to a $4 million renovation project completed last year, which updated the building’s front façade, expanded and modernized the showroom, service drive, and waiting room, and expanded their vehicle storage lots. “Having the right facility is a big part of providing a top-notch service department experience,” Maheras said of the expansion. “We’re committed to constantly improving both our property and our processes to best accommodate our guests’ needs.”

Seize the Prize! ANNA M. CAISON As the Summer Olympics came to a close I thought about the first Olympic Ga me held in Oly mpia, Greece over 3000 years ago. The games were a part of a religious festival held in honor of the god Zeus. Zeus was the father of all of the great gods and goddesses in Greek Mythology. The Greeks valued physical fitness and mental discipline, believing that developing these qua lities were pleasing to Zeus. I wonder if t he Apost le Paul a nd the writer of Hebrews had the Olympic Ga mes i n m i nd when t hey w rote 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, and Hebrews 12:1. The passage from Corinthians reads, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run [their very best to win], but only one receives the prize? Run [your race] in such a way that you may seize the prize and make it yours! Now every athlete who [goes into training and] competes in the games is disciplined and exercises self-control in all things. They do it to win a crown that withers, but we [do it to receive] an imperishable [crown that cannot wither].” (verses 24-25-AMP Bible) Pau l compa res t he ga mes to t he C h r i st ia n’s w a l k of fa it h. p a r t ic ip at e i n t he g a me s t o w i n ! Christians should participate in t he race of faith to win! Athletes prepare themselves through rigorous exercise, training, and self-control over their body in honor to Zeus. The Christian prepares h i m s el f t h r ou g h c e a s ele s s pr ayer, rigorous Bible study, and self-control over his sin nature in honor of Christ’s sacrifice for him. In ancient Greece the prize was a crown made of leaves that soon withered away. The Christian’s prize is a crown that never withers away. The stadium that held the ancient Oly mpic Ga mes were f i l led w it h spectators cheering their favorite athletes to v ictor y. Hebrew s 12 :1 pa i nt s a n encouraging picture for believers engaged in the Christian race. The stadium of life that we’re engaged in is filled with cheering spectators who ran the race we’re in and won! Be God’s Olympian and Seize the Prize! Investors Can Learn Much from Workers
BOB KRYGSHELD Next week, we observe Labor Day, a celebration of the American worker. And there’s a lot to celebrate, b e c a u s e ou r w or k e r s have accomplished great things and, in the process, demonstrated a variety of impressive character traits – many of which also can be useful to investors. For example … … Perseverance – Have you ever read about an inventor who failed dozens of times before f ina lly hitting on a winner? Or a scientist who studied the same problem for decades b e f or e d i s c o v e r i n g a revolutionary solution? All kinds of workers display this type of perseverance, in one form or another. As an investor, you, too, w i l l need t h i s “st ickt o -it i v ene s s” b e c au s e you will face challenges. Ma rkets w i l l d rop, indiv idua l investments may disappoint, tax laws may change, and so on. But if you’re patient, and you follow a long-term strategy that’s based on your needs, risk tolerance and time horizon, you can overcome those obstacles t hat may be block i ng prog re s s tow a rd you r goals. … Inquisitiveness – You’ve probably fou nd t hat you ca n improve you r effectiveness simply by asking a few questions or learning a little more about your tasks. As an investor, you’ll also find that knowledge is power – because the more you k now about i nvest i ng a nd i nve st ment s, t he bet ter prepa red you c a n be w hen m a k i ng decisions. Somet i mes, this knowledge can help you look past the so-called experts who are touting the “next hot stock.” Other t i me s, y ou r c u r io sit y may lead you to find new opportunities. In any case, learn as much as you can, and if you work with a financial professional, ask questions – as many as necessary. The investment world is fascinating, and

it can be complex – but it is also understandable to those who make the effort. … F lex ibi l it y – W hen something isn’t working, you m ay ne e d to t r y anot her approach. Successful workers know this. Suppose, for example, you have been trying to boost your overall return by buy i ng a nd sel l i ng investments. After a while, you may realize that such behav ior is cost ly – in more ways than one. You will likely rack up fees a nd commissions, you may incur t he hig hest rate of capital gains taxes (assessed on investments held less t ha n one yea r), a nd you w ill be disrupting any cohesive invest ment st rateg y you’ve est abl i shed. Upon recognizing these problems, you cou ld decide to “switch gears” and follow a long-term, “buy-and-hold” strategy. That’s f lex ibilit y – and that’s a great attribute for investors. … Vision – Good workers h a v e a c l e a r pi c t u r e of w hat t hey w a nt to accomplish – and they know what they must do reach their goal. As an investor, you also need to establish a vision of where you want to go and how you can get there. So when contemplating your retirement, try to foresee the lifestyle you hope to lead. Then, use this vision to help guide your actions, such as increasing your cont r ibut ion s to you r 401(k) or IRA, or changing the investment mix within these accounts. Transferring what you learn from the working world to the investment a rena c a n help ma ke investing a less laborious – and potentially more enjoyable – process. So put that knowledge to good use. Life & Relationships DEE COLLINS Dear Dee: I have a friend who I’ve know n for a year. A lthough we are not dating we have discussed the possibility of being in a relationship. However, we are too different from one another and have different outlooks on life. Most times we don’t agree much on anything. Recently he asked me if we could be in relationship. While I care for him I don’t think he’s the guy for me, I don’t want to hurt his feelings so how should I go about letting him know that I’m not interested in being in a relationship with him? Dear Woman of Power: I addressed you as a woman of power, because that’s who you are. Therefore, remain as such via standing in truth. First and foremost, true to you ! Too often, we as women compromise and get into a relationship when we know deep down within that he is not the one. As a result, we become a fixer, which should never be the case. Relationships are not always agreeable; however, they should be respectful to one another, which allow them to disagree agreeably. I respect the fact that you don’t want to hurt his feelings, but it is either now or later. The longer you wait the more hurt he will be, Concrete & Patching: Steps, patched correctly. Free estimates. Replacing steps, walks, drives, patios. 5% Senior small jobs. License. DW Concrete. Dennis. 708418-0523

I saw Jamie Kwak at the Jeep Bettenhausen dealership in Orland Park. It was the best service I’ve ever received when it comes to car dealerships. I had some things come up and I had specific requirements for the type of car I was looking for. For about 2 weeks, Jamie sent me information for any used cars that came onto the lot and had me come in to test drive each one. I had my heart set on a Dodge Dart and she was able to find one that was in my price range and exactly what I was looking for. She was very patient with me and completely accommodating! I am so happy with my new car and I cannot thank her enough for all of her help. If you’re going to buy a new car I suggest you go visit Jamie because she will take great care of you.
